What US clients expect from an NDT report
In the US, an NDT report is not just a record of what you found. It is evidence that a qualified person, working to a written practice and an approved procedure, inspected a specific weld or component to a specific code, with a calibrated instrument, and that someone at the right level signed off the result. Refinery QA departments, EPC quality managers and insurers' inspectors read reports with that checklist in mind.
Most US inspection companies can produce that evidence. The trouble is that it lives in pieces: readings in a technician's notebook, cert cards in a binder, the calibration certificate in the equipment room, the procedure number in someone's head. Assembling it into a clean report after a twelve-hour shift at a Gulf Coast plant is where the errors creep in.
The NDT Reports app in Atlantis NDT ERP puts those pieces into one record. It covers 17 report types, including UT, RT, MT, PT, VT, PAUT, TOFD, MFL, PMI, hardness, UT thickness and computed radiography, each with its own fields and numbering. Reports move through draft, in progress, review, approved and sent, with inspector, reviewer and approver signatures, and come out in your company's own template.
This page looks at how that works for US inspection companies specifically: the codes, the client work and the regulators that shape what goes on the report.
SNT-TC-1A, CP-189 and who is allowed to sign
US NDT certification is mostly employer-based. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, your company writes a written practice, and your Level III and management certify technicians against it. Under ANSI/ASNT CP-189, which many owners and defense-related clients call for, the rules are tighter but the principle is the same: the employer certifies, and the employer answers for it.
That makes the signature block on a report more than a formality. The person signing as interpreter must hold the right level in the right method on the day of the inspection. If a Level II's certification lapsed last month and nobody noticed, every report they signed since is open to challenge.
NDT Reports records the inspector, reviewer and approver on every report, with signatures. The ERP's Certificates app records each technician's scheme, including SNT-TC-1A and CP-189, with level, method, issue and expiry dates, and flags certs as expiring soon or expired. Timesheets warn when a technician's certificate is not valid. The roles allowed to review and approve are set during implementation to mirror your written practice.
Atlantis NDT also runs SNT-TC-1A based training for Level I, II and III, if you are building up the people to fill those signature blocks.
Reports built around ASME Section V and construction codes
For new construction and repairs, most US work points back to ASME Section V for the examination method and to a construction code for acceptance. The report has to show both. NDT Reports carries procedure and standard references on every report, alongside the work order, contract, drawing and WPS numbers, so the reviewer can check the chain from procedure to acceptance.
| Typical US code context | What the report records in NDT Reports |
|---|---|
| ASME Section V Article 2 radiography, with acceptance to Section VIII or B31.3 | RT source, technique, IQI type and placement; weld lines with defect type and orientation; overall result |
| ASME Section V Article 4 ultrasonic examination of welds | UT probe calibration table; weld lines with defect type and orientation |
| ASME Section V Articles 6 and 7, penetrant and magnetic particle | PT method and developer; MT technique and particle type |
| AWS D1.1 structural steel fabrication | UT, MT and VT reports with WPS and drawing references |
| API 1104 pipeline girth welds | RT, UT or PAUT reports with weld lines, focal laws for PAUT, and the acceptance standard referenced |
The app does not decide acceptance for you. The technician and reviewer apply the code; the report records what they applied and what they found, and the result goes on as acceptable, not acceptable, or acceptable with remarks.
API 510, 570 and 653 client work
A large share of US inspection revenue comes from in-service work at refineries, chemical plants and terminals, where the owner runs an inspection program under API 510 for pressure vessels, API 570 for piping and API 653 for aboveground storage tanks. The NDT company supplies the data. The owner's authorized inspector and engineers make the fitness and interval decisions.
That split shapes what the report must do. It has to present clean, traceable readings in a format the owner's inspector can use without re-typing, and it often needs that inspector's name and signature on it. NDT Reports has a field for a third-party or authorized inspector, with name and signature, for exactly this.
Report types that do most of the work here:
- UT thickness (UTT), with readings recorded by direction, for vessel shells, heads and piping circuits
- MFL, with scan mode and item lines, for tank floor scanning during API 653 out-of-service inspections
- PMI and hardness for alloy verification and post-weld checks on repairs
- PWHT for heat treatment on repair welds
- IRIS and ECT for heat exchanger tube inspection during turnarounds
Owners often insist on their own Excel layout. The app fills Excel templates automatically by mapping report fields to cells, so the owner's spreadsheet format stays intact and your office stops re-typing readings into it. Engineering assessment remains with the owner's inspector; the app records and presents the NDT data.
Radiography: NRC, Agreement States and the RT report
Industrial radiography in the US is licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission or, in Agreement States such as Texas and Louisiana, by the state radiation control program. 10 CFR Part 34 and its state equivalents govern radiographer qualification, surveys and source control. Those obligations sit with your radiation safety officer and your license, not with reporting software.
What reporting software can do is make the technical record complete. The RT report in NDT Reports records the source, the technique, and the IQI type and placement, alongside weld lines with defect type and orientation and the overall result. Computed radiography has its own report type and numbering, so CR work is not forced onto a film template.
Around the report, the ERP holds related records you already have to keep somewhere:
- Each technician's NDT profile records radiation safety training, radiation badge number and medical fitness expiry
- The Fleet app records whether a vehicle can carry radioactive sources, with its transport license number and expiry
- Project records carry safety induction and work permit fields for plant sites
Source logs, dosimetry reports and utilization records stay in whatever system your license requires. The goal here is that the RT report itself is complete and signed before it leaves the building, with the radiographer and reviewer clearly identified.
Gulf Coast turnarounds: Houston, Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, Corpus Christi
If you work the Houston Ship Channel, the Baton Rouge and Lake Charles corridors or the Corpus Christi refineries, you know turnaround reporting. Crews run day and night, several methods run in parallel, and the owner wants reports for yesterday's work at the morning meeting. The usual approach is a pile of paper forms and an office team re-typing through the night.
NDT Reports changes the rhythm:
- Technicians capture readings, weld lines and photos on a tablet in the offline field app inside the unit, where signal is often poor, and sync from the trailer
- Each report opens against the job, with the work order and references already on it
- Separate numbering per method keeps hundreds of UT, MT, PT and RT reports in clean sequences
- Reviewers see a queue of reports in review, rather than a stack on a desk
- Approved reports go out in the owner's template, and the record shows which are approved but not yet sent
Turnarounds also stress scheduling. The Team Assignments app blocks double-booking of technicians and equipment serial numbers, and warns when assigned equipment is out of calibration. The field app's REST API shows each technician the jobs and equipment issued to them, so the probe on the report is the probe actually signed out.
OSHA rules, owner inductions and permits still govern the work itself. The project record carries the safety induction and work permit fields so they are on file with the job.
Pipelines, PHMSA and remote spreads
Gas and liquid pipeline operators regulated by PHMSA under 49 CFR Parts 192 and 195 need weld inspection records they can produce years later. For construction spreads, that usually means RT or ultrasonic reports on every girth weld, tied to the weld number, the WPS and the acceptance standard, typically API 1104.
Spreads run through places with no signal for days. The offline field app is built for that: drafts and photos stay on the device and sync when the crew reaches coverage. The method picker opens the right report type, the technician records each weld as a line with defect type and orientation, signs on screen and previews the PDF before submitting.
For in-service pipeline and station work, PAUT reports record focal laws, TOFD has its own report type, and UT thickness reports record readings by direction. Numbering per method keeps a long spread's weld records in order, and the work order and drawing references on each report make it straightforward to pull every report for a given section when the operator asks.
Operator-specific report layouts are handled as versioned company templates. If an operator asks for an extra field on the report, that is agreed as part of your customization scope.
Aerospace, NAS 410 and marine work
Aerospace NDT shops certify personnel to NAS 410 and work to customer and OEM specifications that are strict about who inspected what, with which procedure. The ERP's Certificates app records NAS 410 certifications under its 'other' scheme option, with level, method, dates and attachments. NDT Reports carries the procedure and standard references and captures inspector, reviewer and approver signatures on each report.
Eddy current, penetrant, magnetic particle and ultrasonic reports are the day-to-day types for this work. Customer-specific layouts, including prime contractor forms, are loaded as versioned company templates during implementation. Aerospace customers often have their own requirements for electronic records, so we talk through what your customers ask for before you commit.
On the marine side, Gulf shipyards and repair yards from Pascagoula to Galveston deal with class surveyors every week. Marine mode adds a vessel cover page with photo, location and dates, and merges into the PDF the classification-society certificate from a library covering ABS, DNV, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, RINA, IRS and ClassNK, plus the inspector's Level II cert and the instrument's calibration certificate. Photos sit in a two-up grid, so a hull gauging pack stays readable.
Featured: Digital Twin Reporting Software for US asset owners
Large US owners are asking more of their inspection contractors than a PDF. Many want to see findings located on the asset, compare inspections over time and share results with engineering teams who never visit the unit.
Digital Twin Reporting Software is Atlantis NDT's companion product for that. It places inspection results on a 3D model of the asset. It is a separate product from the ERP: NDT Reports handles capture, workflow, sign-off and the formal signed report, while Digital Twin Reporting Software gives the owner the spatial, visual view.
For a Gulf Coast contractor bidding turnaround or in-service work, that pairing is a practical differentiator:
- The owner's inspector can find a flagged nozzle or weld on the model, not on a marked-up isometric
- Repeat inspections of the same vessel or tank are easier to compare in place
- Your formal reports still come out of the ERP in the owner's template, signed by your certified staff
- You can offer it on the jobs where the owner values it, and keep standard PDFs elsewhere
The ERP app itself does not build 3D models. If your clients want the 3D view, ask for both in one quote.
Implementation for US inspection companies
Atlantis NDT deploys and configures the ERP for you, and has a presence in Houston, so US working hours are covered. A typical NDT Reports rollout:
- Collect your current report forms by method, plus the formats your biggest owners and EPCs demand
- Load them as versioned Excel, Word, PDF or HTML templates, mapping Excel fields to cells where owners want spreadsheets
- Set report numbering per method and assign inspector, reviewer and approver roles to match your written practice
- Connect jobs, technicians and equipment so the field app shows each technician their assigned work and issued instruments
- Roll out the field app on tablets and run a real job offline before go-live
Most US customers start with NDT Reports together with Certificates, because the report signature and the technician's certification status are the two things owners audit most. Asset Management, Team Assignments and Invoicing can follow once reports are flowing. See the full list of ERP apps for how they connect.
Anything specific to your clients, such as an extra field an owner insists on, is agreed in the customization scope. The system is affordable, accessible and fully customizable, and pricing is quote on request. Request a quote for NDT Reports.
Frequently asked questions
Does the software support SNT-TC-1A and CP-189 sign-off?
Yes, in the way that matters for reports. Each report records the inspector, reviewer and approver with signatures, and those roles are configured to follow your written practice. The Certificates app records SNT-TC-1A and CP-189 certifications with level, method and expiry, and timesheets warn when a technician's cert is not valid.
Can we produce reports in an owner's Excel format?
Yes. Excel templates are filled automatically by mapping report fields to cells. Word, PDF and HTML templates with your logo, header and footer are also supported, and all templates are versioned.
Can an API authorized inspector sign the report?
Yes. There is a third-party inspector or authorized inspector field with name and signature, in addition to your own inspector, reviewer and approver.
Does it handle radiography licensing records?
No. NRC or Agreement State licensing, dosimetry and source logs stay under your radiation safety program. The RT report records source, technique, and IQI type and placement, and employee profiles record radiation safety training and badge number.
Will it work inside a refinery unit with no signal?
Yes. The field app is an installable web app that works offline, stores drafts and photos on the device and syncs later.
Is Digital Twin Reporting Software included?
It is a separate companion product. It places inspection results on a 3D model and works alongside NDT Reports. You can get a quote for NDT Reports alone or for both together.

Built for any business that runs on operations
Most companies do not fail at their craft. They lose time, margin and goodwill in the gaps between the tools they use to run the place — a quoting spreadsheet that does not talk to the job sheet, a job sheet that does not reach accounts, and a compliance folder nobody can search when a client asks. Atlantis closes those gaps by putting the whole operation on one platform, so information is entered once and everything downstream stays in step.
What you can run on it
- Sales and CRM — leads, quotes, follow-ups and the pipeline that tells you what next month looks like.
- Projects and job costing — plan the work, track the hours and materials against it, and see the margin while the job is still live rather than at final account.
- Field and service teams — dispatch, schedules, mobile capture that works with no signal, and sign-off from site.
- Inventory and purchasing — stock, suppliers, reorder points and goods receipt, joined to the jobs that consume them.
- People — records, qualifications and licences with renewal reminders, timesheets, leave and payroll.
- Quality and documents — procedures and forms under revision control, with the audit trail an inspection or accreditation body actually asks for.
- Accounts — invoicing, expenses, multi-currency and the reporting your accountant stops chasing you for.
Affordable, accessible, fully customizable — and we mean each word
Affordable because the whole suite is included rather than sold to you a module at a time, and because implementation is done by people who have run operations rather than by a chain of subcontractors. Accessible because it runs in a browser and on a phone, works for a small team on day one, and does not need a specialist on staff to keep it alive. Fully customizable because your process is the thing that makes you competitive — the software should bend to it, not the other way round.
Industries we configure for
Service businesses and contractors, manufacturing and fabrication, trading and distribution, laboratories and testing houses, engineering consultancies, construction and facilities, and asset owners across energy, marine, aerospace and infrastructure. Inspection and testing is where we started, and it remains the sector we go deepest in — but the platform underneath is general-purpose, and most of what it does has nothing to do with inspection at all.
What happens when you get in touch
A short conversation, not a sales sequence. We ask how the business runs today and where it hurts, show you the platform doing that work, and send a written quote shaped to your region, your team size and the scope you actually need. No obligation, nothing to install first, and no pressure to decide on the call. Reach out and tell us what you are trying to fix.
