What Gulf clients expect from an NDT report

NDT reporting in the Gulf is shaped by a small number of very large asset owners. Saudi Aramco, SABIC, ADNOC and its group companies, QatarEnergy, KNPC and KIPIC in Kuwait, Bapco in Bahrain and PDO in Oman each have their own engineering standards, their own requirements for inspection contractors and, often, their own report formats. An NDT company working across the region may produce the same UT report in four different layouts in a single month.

Reports are also read by more people than in many markets. The contractor's Level II signs, the contractor's QC reviews, a third-party inspection agency may witness, and the owner's inspector accepts. Every one of those signatures has to be on the document, and every reference, from WPS number to drawing to procedure, has to match the approved project documents.

The NDT Reports app in Atlantis NDT ERP is built for that. It covers 17 report types, each with its own numbering and method-specific fields, a workflow from draft to in progress, review, approved and sent, signatures for inspector, reviewer and approver, and a separate third-party or authorized inspector field. Reports come out in your versioned company templates, one per client format if needed.

Saudi Aramco projects and contractor requirements

Working for Saudi Aramco means working to its engineering standards (SAES) and materials system specifications, with inspection on projects organised through Saudi Aramco Inspection Checklists (SAICs) and Saudi Aramco Typical Inspection Plans (SATIPs). NDT contractors go through approval, and owners commonly require technician qualification checks before anyone works on their facilities.

In practice that makes the report the place where many things are checked at once: that the technician is qualified and certified for the method, that the procedure is the approved revision, that the equipment was calibrated, and that the acceptance criteria match the applicable standard. NDT Reports records procedure and standard references, WPS, drawing, contract and work order numbers on every report. The UT report includes the probe calibration table; the RT report records source, technique, and IQI type and placement.

Around the report, the ERP holds the supporting evidence: technician certifications with expiry in the Certificates app, calibration certificates in Asset Management, and approved procedure revisions in the Procedures app. When an owner's inspector asks for proof, it is a lookup, not a search through a site container.

Owner-specific report layouts are loaded as templates during implementation. Nothing here implies approval by any owner; your contractor approval remains your own process.

ADNOC, QatarEnergy, KNPC and other regional owners

In the UAE, ADNOC's onshore, offshore, gas and refining companies, including the Ruwais complex, run large inspection programs with their own specifications. In Qatar, Ras Laffan and Mesaieed host LNG, refining and petrochemical assets. In Kuwait, the Mina Al-Ahmadi and Mina Abdullah refineries and the Al-Zour complex drive steady inspection demand.

Each owner, and often each project's EPC contractor, specifies its own documentation. NDT Reports handles this through versioned company templates in Excel, Word, PDF or HTML. You keep one set of report data and produce it in the layout each client expects. Where a client requires an Excel register, the app fills Excel templates automatically by mapping fields to cells, which removes one of the biggest sources of transcription errors on large projects.

Common report types on regional oil, gas and petrochemical work:

How the workflow maps to an inspection and test plan

Gulf projects run on inspection and test plans with hold, witness and review points for the contractor, the third-party inspection agency and the owner. The report workflow in NDT Reports lines up with that structure:

  1. Draft: the report is opened against the work order, carrying the contract, drawing, WPS and procedure references from the start
  2. In progress: the technician, usually a Level II, records readings, weld lines with defect type and orientation, and photos
  3. Review: contractor QC or the Level III checks technique, procedure revision, coverage and acceptance criteria
  4. Approved: the approver signs, and the TPI or owner inspector's name and signature are recorded in the third-party inspector field
  5. Sent: the report is issued in the owner's template, and the record shows it has gone

Because every report has a status, the question asked at every daily progress meeting, how many reports are pending and where, has a straight answer from the system instead of a round of phone calls.

Who can review and approve is set during implementation to match your QA plan and the owner's requirements. If a report is sent back, it returns to the technician with the reviewer's comments, rather than disappearing into an email chain.

ASNT and ISO 9712 on the same crew

Gulf NDT crews are international. A single shutdown team may include technicians from India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt and the UK, holding ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based certifications from an employer, ISO 9712 certifications from a national body, PCN or CSWIP. Owners accept different schemes for different work, and the contractor has to know exactly what each person holds.

The ERP's Certificates app records all of these side by side: scheme, certifying body, level, method, issue, expiry and renewal dates, industry sector, OJT and training hours, vision tests and attachments. Status is computed automatically as active, expiring soon, expired or revoked, and daily email alerts can go to your QA and operations staff. Timesheets warn when a technician's certificate is not valid.

That feeds straight into reporting. The inspector on an NDT report is a technician whose certification you can see in the same system, and for marine reports the inspector's Level II certificate is merged into the PDF.

Expatriate crews also carry residency and visa-linked documents, such as the iqama in Saudi Arabia. Employee records can hold these documents; any expiry tracking you need for them is configured during implementation. Atlantis NDT's own training is based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A only.

Shutdown and turnaround season

Most major shutdowns in the Gulf are scheduled for the cooler months, which concentrates a year's worth of reporting pressure into a few intense windows. Contractors mobilise large crews, run day and night shifts, and are expected to turn reports around daily so the owner can release equipment for box-up.

NDT Reports helps keep that manageable:

Shutdowns also stress people and equipment. The Team Assignments app blocks double-booking of technicians and equipment serial numbers and warns when equipment assigned to a job is out of calibration, while the field app's REST API shows each technician their assigned jobs and issued equipment.

Offline reporting in the desert and offshore

A lot of Gulf NDT happens far from reliable signal: remote gas plants, pipeline corridors crossing the desert, offshore fields in the Arabian Gulf, and new-build sites where the network is not yet installed. Some plants also restrict device connectivity inside process areas.

The field app is an installable web app that works offline. Drafts and photos are stored on the device and synced when a connection is available, at the site office, the camp or back onshore. Technicians use the method picker to open the right report type, capture photos, sign on screen and preview the PDF before submission.

That also protects against a common problem in hot climates: paper forms that are smudged or unreadable by the time they reach the office. Data captured on the device is exactly what the reviewer sees.

Where a client's site rules limit the use of personal devices or cameras, the field setup is agreed during implementation around those rules, for example company-issued tablets, or photo capture only where permits allow.

Radiography and source controls

Industrial radiography in the region is regulated nationally, for example by the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission in Saudi Arabia and the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation in the UAE. Licensing, source movement approvals, dosimetry and site radiation controls are the licence holder's responsibility and stay in the systems those regulators require.

NDT Reports covers the technical record. The RT report records the source, technique, and IQI type and placement, alongside weld lines with defect type and orientation. Computed radiography has its own report type and numbering, which matters as more projects accept CR.

Night-shift radiography during shutdowns generates many reports quickly; the workflow keeps them moving so they are ready for review the next morning.

Marine, ship repair and offshore fabrication

Ship repair yards and offshore fabrication yards in Dubai, Sharjah, Bahrain, Ras Al-Khair and Jubail work with classification societies on every repair and new-build. Reports must reach the surveyor with the class certificate, the inspector's qualification and the equipment calibration certificate attached.

Marine mode in NDT Reports handles this. It adds a vessel cover page with photo, inspection location and dates, and merges into the PDF the classification-society certificate from a library covering DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, RINA, IRS and ClassNK, the inspector's Level II certificate and the calibration certificate. Photos are arranged in a two-up grid for readability.

Hull thickness gauging uses the UT thickness report with readings by direction, and repair welds use UT, MT or RT reports, all in one system with separate numbering. For offshore jacket and topside fabrication, PAUT and TOFD reports sit alongside the rest, so one yard's whole NDT record lives in one place.

Connected to the rest of the ERP

A Gulf contractor's reporting problems are rarely only about the report. They are about crews, certificates, equipment and billing that sit in different spreadsheets. The ERP connects them:

With the report tied to the same job as the timesheet and the invoice, disputes over what was inspected and billed are settled from one record.

Featured: Digital Twin Reporting Software

Many Gulf owners are running large digital transformation programs, and they increasingly expect contractors to deliver inspection data they can use visually, not only as PDFs.

Digital Twin Reporting Software is Atlantis NDT's companion product for this. It places inspection results on a 3D model of the asset and works alongside the ERP's NDT Reports app. The ERP handles the job, the data capture, review and approval and the signed report; the digital twin product gives the owner a spatial view of where findings sit.

The ERP app itself does not build digital twins. The 3D product is scoped separately, and you can request both together.

Frequently asked questions

Can the software produce reports in Saudi Aramco or ADNOC formats?

Yes, by loading those layouts as versioned company templates during implementation. This does not mean any owner has approved or endorsed the software; acceptance of your reports remains between you and your client.

Can we track ASNT and ISO 9712 certifications on the same crew?

Yes. The Certificates app records SNT-TC-1A, CP-189, ISO 9712, PCN, CSWIP and other schemes side by side, with automatic expiry status and alerts.

Does it work without signal on remote sites?

Yes. The field app works offline, stores drafts and photos on the device and syncs later.

Can TPI and owner inspectors sign the report?

Yes. The third-party or authorized inspector field records their name and signature, in addition to your inspector, reviewer and approver.

Can reports be issued in Arabic?

Yes. Arabic or bilingual layouts are loaded as company templates during implementation.

Does it handle VAT invoicing?

If you take the Invoicing app, VAT is configured locally during implementation using standard Atlantis ERP tax settings. We make no certification claims for any e-invoicing regime.

Is Digital Twin Reporting Software part of the ERP?

No. It is a separate companion product that places inspection results on a 3D model and works alongside NDT Reports.

Built for any business that runs on operations

Most companies do not fail at their craft. They lose time, margin and goodwill in the gaps between the tools they use to run the place — a quoting spreadsheet that does not talk to the job sheet, a job sheet that does not reach accounts, and a compliance folder nobody can search when a client asks. Atlantis closes those gaps by putting the whole operation on one platform, so information is entered once and everything downstream stays in step.

What you can run on it

  • Sales and CRM — leads, quotes, follow-ups and the pipeline that tells you what next month looks like.
  • Projects and job costing — plan the work, track the hours and materials against it, and see the margin while the job is still live rather than at final account.
  • Field and service teams — dispatch, schedules, mobile capture that works with no signal, and sign-off from site.
  • Inventory and purchasing — stock, suppliers, reorder points and goods receipt, joined to the jobs that consume them.
  • People — records, qualifications and licences with renewal reminders, timesheets, leave and payroll.
  • Quality and documents — procedures and forms under revision control, with the audit trail an inspection or accreditation body actually asks for.
  • Accounts — invoicing, expenses, multi-currency and the reporting your accountant stops chasing you for.

Affordable, accessible, fully customizable — and we mean each word

Affordable because the whole suite is included rather than sold to you a module at a time, and because implementation is done by people who have run operations rather than by a chain of subcontractors. Accessible because it runs in a browser and on a phone, works for a small team on day one, and does not need a specialist on staff to keep it alive. Fully customizable because your process is the thing that makes you competitive — the software should bend to it, not the other way round.

Industries we configure for

Service businesses and contractors, manufacturing and fabrication, trading and distribution, laboratories and testing houses, engineering consultancies, construction and facilities, and asset owners across energy, marine, aerospace and infrastructure. Inspection and testing is where we started, and it remains the sector we go deepest in — but the platform underneath is general-purpose, and most of what it does has nothing to do with inspection at all.

What happens when you get in touch

A short conversation, not a sales sequence. We ask how the business runs today and where it hurts, show you the platform doing that work, and send a written quote shaped to your region, your team size and the scope you actually need. No obligation, nothing to install first, and no pressure to decide on the call. Reach out and tell us what you are trying to fix.
