Why NDT reporting in Canada has its own shape
Canadian NDT companies sit between two worlds. Technicians are certified centrally by Natural Resources Canada under CAN/CGSB-48.9712, the Canadian adoption of ISO 9712, while many clients, especially in oil and gas, also work with American codes and ASNT-certified crews who cross the border for shutdowns. Construction work runs to CSA standards, pressure equipment falls under provincial safety authorities, and radiography is licensed federally.
Each of those shows up on a report. The certification of the technician. The CSA or ASME standard used for acceptance. The provincial or owner-user inspector who witnessed the work. The radiography technique and IQI. When reports are assembled by hand after a long shift at a site north of Fort McMurray, one of those details is usually the thing that goes missing.
The NDT Reports app in Atlantis NDT ERP captures them in one place. It covers 17 report types, each with its own numbering, method-specific fields and a workflow from draft to in progress, review, approved and sent. The inspector, reviewer and approver sign on the report, and a third-party or authorized inspector can sign too. Output uses your templates, in Excel, Word, PDF or HTML.
Below is how that fits the codes, regulators and industries Canadian inspection companies actually work with.
Recording CGSB/NRCan certification on the report
Under the NRCan program, certification is issued by a central body rather than by the employer. That is different from the US employer-based model, but it does not remove the employer's job. You still need to know, on the day of each inspection, that the technician's certification is valid for the method and level, and your client still wants to see it reflected on the report.
The ERP's Certificates app records each technician's scheme, which can be ISO 9712 for NRCan certification or SNT-TC-1A for ASNT-based certs held by cross-border crews, with the certifying body, level, method, issue and expiry dates, and attachments. It flags certs expiring within 90 days and those already expired, and timesheets warn when a technician's cert is not valid. Vision tests are recorded with their own expiry.
On the report itself, NDT Reports captures the inspector, reviewer and approver with signatures. In marine mode it goes further and merges the inspector's Level II certificate into the PDF.
One clarification: Atlantis NDT does not train or certify for the NRCan/CGSB scheme. Our training is based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A. The ERP simply records whichever certifications your technicians hold.
CSA W59 fabrication and structural steel
Structural fabrication shops certified by the Canadian Welding Bureau under CSA W47.1 build to CSA W59 for welded steel construction. The NDT that goes with that work, mostly UT, MT and VT on welds, has to be traceable to the drawing, the welding procedure and the acceptance clauses of W59.
NDT Reports carries the references a fabrication QA manager needs on each report: work order, request number, contract, drawing numbers, WPS number, and the procedure and standard references. Each weld goes on as a line with defect type and orientation, and the report closes with an overall result of acceptable, not acceptable, or acceptable with remarks.
For a busy fab shop, the day-to-day benefits are practical:
- The shop inspector records weld lines on a tablet at the bay instead of on a clipboard
- UT reports carry the probe calibration table, so the reviewer can see calibration without chasing a separate sheet
- MT reports record technique and particle type, and VT has its own report type and numbering
- Reports go to the engineer of record or client in your template, with drawing and WPS numbers already on them
If your shop also fabricates to ASME for pressure work, the same app handles those reports; only the standard reference and the template change.
CSA Z662 pipelines in Alberta and British Columbia
Pipeline construction and maintenance in Canada works to CSA Z662, under the Canada Energy Regulator for federally regulated lines and provincial regulators such as the Alberta Energy Regulator and the BC Energy Regulator for provincial ones. Operators expect a complete weld inspection record for every girth weld, and they expect to find it years later.
On a spread, that means a long run of RT or ultrasonic reports tied to weld numbers, with the acceptance standard referenced. NDT Reports handles this with separate numbering per method, weld lines with defect type and orientation, and reference fields for work order, drawing and WPS. PAUT reports record focal laws, and TOFD has its own report type.
Pipeline work in northern Alberta and BC means long stretches with no signal. The offline field app is an installable web app: technicians pick the method, record readings, capture photos and sign on screen with no connection, and drafts sync when the crew returns to camp or reaches coverage. A PDF preview on the device lets them check the report before it goes to review.
The REST API behind the app gives each technician the jobs assigned to them and the equipment issued to them, so crews on rotation pick up where the last shift left off.
ABSA, CSA B51 and pressure equipment
Pressure equipment in Canada is regulated provincially, with CSA B51 as the common reference for boilers, pressure vessels and piping. In Alberta, ABSA administers pressure equipment safety and oversees owner-user inspection programs at plants and upgraders. Ontario has TSSA, and British Columbia has Technical Safety BC.
For an NDT company, that means reports often need to be accepted by an owner-user's inspector or a safety codes officer. NDT Reports has a third-party inspector or authorized inspector field with name and signature, so that sign-off lives on the report rather than in a separate letter.
Report types that come up regularly on pressure equipment work:
- UT thickness, with readings by direction, for vessel and piping inspections
- PWHT for heat treatment on repair welds, with hardness reports alongside
- PMI for alloy verification on repairs and replacements
- Ferrite for duplex and austenitic stainless welds
- RT and UT for repair weld acceptance
The app records the NDT data and the sign-offs. Decisions about fitness for service and inspection intervals stay with the owner-user's program and the regulator. Where a provincial client needs a specific report layout, it is added as a versioned company template.
Radiography under CNSC licensing
Industrial radiography in Canada is licensed federally by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. Exposure devices must be used by certified exposure device operators, and licensees carry obligations for source control, dosimetry and transport. Those obligations belong to your licence and your radiation safety program.
NDT Reports makes sure the technical side of each RT job is complete. The RT report records the source, the technique and the IQI type and placement, alongside weld lines with defect type and orientation. Computed radiography has its own report type and numbering, so CR work is recorded on its own terms.
Related records in the ERP:
- The employee NDT profile records radiation safety training, radiation badge number and medical fitness expiry
- The Fleet app records whether a vehicle can carry radioactive sources, with transport licence number and expiry
- The Certificates app can hold exposure device operator certification under its 'other' scheme option, with its expiry, next to the technician's NDT certs
Dosimetry results, source logs and leak tests stay in the systems your CNSC licence requires. What the ERP adds is that nobody has to dig through three binders to confirm the radiographer on a report was qualified that day.
Oil sands, upgraders and winter shutdowns
Alberta's oil sands operations around Fort McMurray, the upgraders and refineries in the Industrial Heartland near Edmonton, and refining and petrochemical sites such as Sarnia run large maintenance turnarounds with big NDT crews, often living in camps and often working through winter. Reports are produced in volume, under time pressure, and reviewed by owners with strict QA expectations.
The problems are familiar: paper forms that get wet or lost, technicians rotating out before their reports are typed, a Level III reviewing a stack of printouts at the end of a shift, and an owner asking which reports from last week are still outstanding. NDT Reports addresses each one:
- Offline capture on a tablet, so work is recorded in the unit, not reconstructed from notes later
- A visible workflow, so reports still in review, or approved but unsent, are easy to find
- Separate numbering per method, which keeps a turnaround's UT, MT, PT, RT, IRIS and PMI reports in order
- Output in the owner's template, including Excel layouts filled automatically from mapped fields
Heat exchanger bundles pulled during turnarounds are a steady source of IRIS and eddy current work. Both have their own report types, with numbering and an overall result, so tube inspection reports do not end up on a generic form. The Team Assignments app, meanwhile, blocks double-booking of technicians and equipment serials when the crew list changes daily.
Ontario nuclear, power and marine work
Ontario's nuclear stations at Bruce, Darlington and Pickering, and the supply chain around them, work to the CSA N285 series and demanding quality assurance programs. NDT on these sites is highly procedural: every report must reference the approved procedure and be reviewed and approved by the right people.
NDT Reports supports that discipline with procedure and standard references on every report, inspector, reviewer and approver signatures, and a clear status from draft to sent. Whether a nuclear client accepts a given electronic reporting process is a decision for their QA program, and we work through their requirements with you during implementation rather than assume.
On the coasts, shipyards and repair yards in Halifax, Vancouver and St. John's deal with classification societies on hull and machinery surveys. Marine mode adds a vessel cover page with photo, location and dates, and merges into the PDF the class certificate, chosen from a library including DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, RINA, IRS and ClassNK, along with the inspector's Level II cert and the calibration certificate. Photos are laid out in a two-up grid, which keeps long thickness surveys readable.
How NDT Reports links to the rest of your operation
A report is only as good as the records behind it. In the ERP, those records sit in connected apps rather than separate spreadsheets:
- Projects hold the NDT job with site, client PO, methods, codes, scope and acceptance criteria, which is where the report's work order comes from
- Certificates hold NRCan and ASNT-based certifications with expiry status and daily email alerts
- Asset Management tracks every instrument and probe by serial number, with calibration records and certificate expiry alerts
- Procedures hold approved, revision-controlled procedures that the report references
- Team Assignments dispatch crews and block double-booking
- Invoicing bills from timesheet hours against the same job
You don't need all of them on day one. Many companies start with NDT Reports and Certificates and add the rest as reports start flowing.
Featured: Digital Twin Reporting Software
Oil sands operators, utilities and midstream companies manage very large asset bases. For them, a stack of PDFs is hard to use. They want to see where findings sit on the asset and how they change between inspections.
Digital Twin Reporting Software is Atlantis NDT's companion product for that need. It places inspection results on a 3D model of the asset. It works alongside the NDT Reports app in the ERP: the ERP runs the job, captures the data, handles sign-off and produces the signed report, and Digital Twin Reporting Software gives the owner a spatial view of the results.
- A plant engineer in Calgary can review findings on a model of a unit in Fort McMurray without a site visit
- Repeat inspections of the same equipment are easier to compare when results sit in place on the model
- It gives your company a clear point of difference in owner prequalification and tenders
The ERP app does not create 3D models or digital twins itself. It is the reporting and workflow engine, and the 3D product is scoped separately. You can start with NDT Reports and add digital twin reporting when a client asks for it.
Implementation for Canadian inspection companies
Atlantis NDT deploys and configures the ERP for you. For Canadian customers, setup usually covers:
- Templates in English and, for Quebec clients, French, loaded as versioned company templates
- Report numbering per method, following your existing convention
- Inspector, reviewer and approver roles set to match your quality manual
- Certificates set up for NRCan ISO 9712 and ASNT-based certs side by side
- Field app rollout on crew tablets, tested offline on a real job
- Hosting arrangements and data location, discussed and agreed with you
GST/HST and provincial taxes on invoices are configured during implementation in the Invoicing app, if you take it. Anything your clients require that the standard app doesn't have is agreed as customization scope. See the full list of ERP apps for what else connects to reports.

Frequently asked questions
Can the software record NRCan CGSB certification?
Yes. The Certificates app records ISO 9712 certifications, including NRCan certification under CAN/CGSB-48.9712, with certifying body, level, method and expiry. Atlantis NDT does not train for this scheme; our training is SNT-TC-1A based.
Does it work at remote camps with no internet?
Yes. The field app works offline, storing drafts and photos on the device and syncing when a connection is available.
Can an ABSA owner-user or third-party inspector sign the report?
Yes. There is a third-party or authorized inspector field with name and signature, alongside your own inspector, reviewer and approver.
Can reports reference CSA W59 or Z662?
Yes. Each report carries procedure and standard references, plus WPS, drawing, contract and work order numbers. The acceptance standard you apply is recorded; the app does not evaluate acceptance for you.
Can we issue reports in French?
Yes, by loading French-language templates as company templates during implementation.
Is Digital Twin Reporting Software part of the ERP?
No. It is a separate companion product that places inspection results on a 3D model of the asset and works alongside NDT Reports.

Built for any business that runs on operations
Most companies do not fail at their craft. They lose time, margin and goodwill in the gaps between the tools they use to run the place — a quoting spreadsheet that does not talk to the job sheet, a job sheet that does not reach accounts, and a compliance folder nobody can search when a client asks. Atlantis closes those gaps by putting the whole operation on one platform, so information is entered once and everything downstream stays in step.
What you can run on it
- Sales and CRM — leads, quotes, follow-ups and the pipeline that tells you what next month looks like.
- Projects and job costing — plan the work, track the hours and materials against it, and see the margin while the job is still live rather than at final account.
- Field and service teams — dispatch, schedules, mobile capture that works with no signal, and sign-off from site.
- Inventory and purchasing — stock, suppliers, reorder points and goods receipt, joined to the jobs that consume them.
- People — records, qualifications and licences with renewal reminders, timesheets, leave and payroll.
- Quality and documents — procedures and forms under revision control, with the audit trail an inspection or accreditation body actually asks for.
- Accounts — invoicing, expenses, multi-currency and the reporting your accountant stops chasing you for.
Affordable, accessible, fully customizable — and we mean each word
Affordable because the whole suite is included rather than sold to you a module at a time, and because implementation is done by people who have run operations rather than by a chain of subcontractors. Accessible because it runs in a browser and on a phone, works for a small team on day one, and does not need a specialist on staff to keep it alive. Fully customizable because your process is the thing that makes you competitive — the software should bend to it, not the other way round.
Industries we configure for
Service businesses and contractors, manufacturing and fabrication, trading and distribution, laboratories and testing houses, engineering consultancies, construction and facilities, and asset owners across energy, marine, aerospace and infrastructure. Inspection and testing is where we started, and it remains the sector we go deepest in — but the platform underneath is general-purpose, and most of what it does has nothing to do with inspection at all.
What happens when you get in touch
A short conversation, not a sales sequence. We ask how the business runs today and where it hurts, show you the platform doing that work, and send a written quote shaped to your region, your team size and the scope you actually need. No obligation, nothing to install first, and no pressure to decide on the call. Reach out and tell us what you are trying to fix.
