Reporting NDT to EN ISO standards
Across the UK and Europe, NDT on welds is defined by a family of EN ISO standards: one for the testing technique, one for acceptance levels, and EN ISO 5817 for the weld quality levels behind them. A report that does not state which technique standard and which acceptance level were applied is incomplete, and clients, notified bodies and class surveyors will send it back.
| Method | Typical technique standard | Typical acceptance standard | What NDT Reports records |
|---|---|---|---|
| UT of welds | EN ISO 17640 | EN ISO 11666 | Probe calibration table, weld lines with defect type and orientation |
| RT of welds | EN ISO 17636-1 (film) and 17636-2 (digital) | EN ISO 10675-1 | Source, technique, IQI type and placement; CR as its own report type |
| MT | EN ISO 17638 | EN ISO 23278 | Technique and particle type |
| PT | EN ISO 3452-1 | EN ISO 23277 | Method and developer |
| VT | EN ISO 17637 | EN ISO 5817 | VT report type with weld lines and result |
| PAUT | EN ISO 13588 | EN ISO 19285 | Focal laws |
| TOFD | EN ISO 10863 | EN ISO 15626 | TOFD report type with weld lines and result |
NDT Reports stores the procedure and standard references on every report, together with work order, request, contract, drawing and WPS numbers. The acceptance decision belongs to your Level 2; the app records it as acceptable, not acceptable, or acceptable with remarks, and signs it off through review and approval.
The app covers 17 report types in all, including ECT, IRIS, MFL, PWHT, PMI, hardness, UT thickness, ferrite and holiday/coating, each with its own numbering sequence.
PCN, EN ISO 9712 and the employer's authorisation
In Europe, personnel certification is third-party. Technicians hold EN ISO 9712 certificates issued by a certification body, most often PCN through BINDT in the UK, or national schemes elsewhere. CSWIP is common for welding inspectors and some NDT categories. But EN ISO 9712 is explicit that certification alone does not authorise someone to work: the employer must authorise them in writing for the tasks they perform.
That puts responsibility back on you. The ERP's Certificates app records each technician's scheme (ISO 9712, PCN, CSWIP and others), certifying body, level, method, industry sector, issue, expiry and renewal dates, plus vision tests with their own expiry. It flags certs expiring within 90 days, can send configurable daily email alerts, and timesheets warn when a technician's cert is not valid.
On the report, NDT Reports records inspector, reviewer and approver with signatures, and the reviewer and approver roles are set to match your written authorisations. In marine mode, the inspector's certificate is merged into the report PDF so the surveyor sees it without asking.
For clarity: Atlantis NDT does not deliver PCN, CSWIP or ISO 9712 training. Our training is based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A. The ERP records whichever certifications your people hold.
From Level 1 capture to Level 3 approval
EN ISO 9712 draws clear lines between levels. A Level 1 carries out tests and records results under supervision but does not evaluate them alone. A Level 2 sets up equipment, performs and interprets tests and reports against the acceptance standard. A Level 3 takes responsibility for techniques and procedures. A good reporting workflow follows those lines instead of blurring them.
NDT Reports uses five stages:
- Draft: the report is opened against the work order, with references already filled in
- In progress: readings, weld lines, photos and results are captured, often in the offline field app
- Review: the Level 2 or Level 3 reviewer checks technique, coverage, acceptance references and result
- Approved: the approver signs, and any third-party or notified body inspector's name and signature is recorded
- Sent: the report leaves in the client's template, and the record shows it has been issued
Who is allowed to review and approve is configured during implementation to match your written authorisations. Procedure references on the report can point to procedures held in the ERP's Procedures app, where Level 3 approval and revision history are tracked. That link is what an auditor looks for when they pick one report at random and ask to see the procedure behind it.
PED 2014/68/EU, notified bodies and UK pressure equipment
Pressure equipment placed on the EU market falls under the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU. For higher-category equipment, NDT personnel working on permanent joints must be approved by a notified body or a recognised third-party organisation. In Great Britain, the equivalent regime is the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, with UK approved bodies and UKCA marking.
For an NDT company working for fabricators, that means the notified body's inspector often reviews or witnesses the NDT and wants their involvement recorded. NDT Reports has a third-party inspector field with name and signature on every report. References to the WPS, drawing, contract and procedure sit on the same record, which is what a notified body expects to see when it reviews the manufacturing dossier.
Fabricators' dossiers are usually compiled in a fixed format. Company templates in Excel, Word, PDF or HTML carry your logo, header and footer, and Excel templates are filled automatically by mapping fields to cells, so a fabricator's standard NDT summary sheet can be produced from report data without re-typing.
PMI, ferrite, hardness and PWHT report types cover the supporting records that often travel with a pressure equipment dossier for alloy and stainless work.
UK in-service work: PSSR, competent persons and IRR17
In service, UK pressure systems fall under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000. The user or owner must have a written scheme of examination, and a competent person, often an engineering surveyor from an insurer or inspection body, carries out the examinations. NDT companies supply the thickness surveys, weld inspections and surface crack detection that the competent person relies on.
The competent person usually wants the data in a clear, consistent format, and sometimes wants to sign or countersign. UT thickness reports record readings by direction; MT and PT reports record technique, particle type, method and developer; and the third-party inspector field captures the surveyor's name and signature where they witness the work.
Site radiography in Great Britain is governed by the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017, enforced by HSE, with radiation protection advisers and supervisors appointed by the employer. Those duties stay with your radiation protection arrangements. On the technical record:
- The RT report records source, technique, and IQI type and placement
- Computed radiography has its own report type and numbering
- Each technician's NDT profile records radiation safety training, radiation badge number and medical fitness expiry
- The Fleet app records whether a vehicle can carry radioactive sources, with transport licence details and expiry
North Sea offshore work from Aberdeen
Offshore inspection on the UK and Norwegian continental shelf has its own rhythm: rotations, helicopter logistics, limited bandwidth on the installation and a client team onshore waiting for results. Rope access NDT technicians and inspection crews produce a lot of UT thickness, MT, PAUT and visual work, and the reports have to get from the platform to the client's integrity team in Aberdeen or Stavanger reliably.
The offline field app suits this. It installs on a tablet like any app, works without a connection, stores drafts and photos on the device and syncs when bandwidth allows, whether that is the platform's network overnight or back onshore. Technicians choose the method, record readings and weld lines, attach photos, sign on screen and preview the PDF before submitting.
Because the REST API gives each technician their assigned jobs and issued equipment, the instrument and probe on the report match what was actually sent offshore. With calibration records held in the ERP's Asset Management app, the reviewer onshore can check calibration status without asking the offshore team to photograph a certificate.
Onshore, the reviewer and approver work through the review queue, and approved reports go to the operator in the operator's template, with numbering per method keeping each campaign's reports in order.
Shipyards, class and marine mode
Europe has a dense network of shipyards and repair yards, from Rotterdam and Hamburg to Gdansk, Genoa and the Tyne. Class surveyors from Lloyd's Register, DNV, Bureau Veritas and RINA review NDT on hulls, machinery and repairs every day, and each wants a complete pack.
Marine mode in NDT Reports builds that pack. It adds a vessel cover page with the vessel photo, inspection location and dates, and when the PDF is produced it merges in the classification-society certificate from a library covering DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, RINA, IRS and ClassNK, the inspector's Level II certificate and the calibration certificate for the instrument used. Inspection photos are laid out in a two-up grid.
For a marine inspection company, this removes the slowest part of the job: finding and attaching the right certificates for every report. Hull thickness gauging uses the UT thickness report type with readings by direction, and weld repairs use UT, MT or RT reports, all in the same app with separate numbering.
GDPR and technician personal data
NDT records contain personal data. Reports carry technicians' names and signatures. Certification records include scanned certificates with personal details, and vision test records relate to health, which GDPR and UK GDPR treat as special category data that needs extra care.
The ERP does not make you GDPR compliant on its own; that depends on your policies and processes. But it gives you far better control than scattered spreadsheets and email attachments:
- Access to reports, certificates and vision test records is set by role during implementation, so only the people who need health-related data can see it
- Records sit in one system rather than being copied across shared drives and inboxes
- Data location and hosting arrangements are agreed with you before go-live
- Retention of old records is discussed and configured as part of the setup scope
If you work across several EU countries, we talk through where your data is held and who at Atlantis NDT has access during support, so you can reflect it in your own records of processing.
How NDT Reports connects to the rest of the ERP
NDT Reports is one app in Atlantis NDT ERP. The report pulls its context from the other apps, which is why it stays consistent:
- Projects: the job with site, client PO, contract, methods, codes, scope and acceptance criteria
- Certificates: PCN, ISO 9712 and CSWIP records with expiry status and alerts
- Asset Management: instruments and probes by serial number, with calibration records including provider, certificate number, accredited lab flag and next due date
- Procedures: revision-controlled procedures approved by your Level 3
- Team Assignments: crew dispatch with double-booking of technicians and equipment serials blocked
- Invoicing: billing from approved timesheet hours against the same job
Start with what hurts most. For many European NDT companies that is reporting and certification tracking; the rest can follow.
Featured: Digital Twin Reporting Software
European operators, particularly offshore and in chemicals, are moving inspection data into visual, asset-based tools. Integrity engineers want to click on a vessel or pipe spool and see what was found there, not search a document management system.
Digital Twin Reporting Software is Atlantis NDT's companion product for this. It places inspection results on a 3D model of the asset and works alongside the NDT Reports app in the ERP. The ERP captures the data, runs review and approval, and issues the signed report; the digital twin product shows the client where results sit on the asset.
- Onshore integrity teams can review offshore findings in context
- Repeat surveys of the same structure are easier to compare in place
- It helps an inspection company stand out in operator and EPC tenders
The ERP app does not build 3D models itself. The companion product is scoped and quoted separately, or together with NDT Reports if you want both.
Implementation in the UK and Europe
Atlantis NDT deploys and configures the ERP remotely and works across time zones. A European rollout usually includes:
- Collecting your current report formats by method and the layouts your key clients, fabricators and class societies expect
- Loading them as versioned templates, in the languages you report in, with Excel fields mapped to cells where needed
- Setting numbering per method, and reviewer and approver roles in line with your written authorisations
- Setting up Certificates for PCN, ISO 9712 and CSWIP records, with vision tests and alert recipients
- Rolling out the field app and running a real job offline
- Configuring VAT on invoices, if you take the Invoicing app
Anything specific to your market that is not in the standard app is agreed as customization scope. See the full set of ERP apps. The system is affordable, accessible and fully customizable, and pricing is quote on request: request a quote for NDT Reports.
Frequently asked questions
Does the software support EN ISO 17640 and other EN ISO method standards?
Yes. Every report records the procedure and the technique and acceptance standards applied, such as EN ISO 17640 with EN ISO 11666 for UT of welds. The app records what your Level 2 applied; it does not evaluate acceptance itself.
Can it record PCN and CSWIP certifications?
Yes. The Certificates app records ISO 9712, PCN and CSWIP schemes with level, method, sector and expiry. Atlantis NDT does not train for these schemes; our training is SNT-TC-1A based.
Can a notified body or competent person sign the report?
Yes. The third-party inspector field records their name and signature alongside your inspector, reviewer and approver.
Will it work offshore with limited bandwidth?
Yes. The field app works offline, stores drafts and photos on the device and syncs when a connection is available.
Is it GDPR compliant?
Software alone cannot make you compliant. Role-based access, a single controlled system and an agreed hosting location help you meet your own GDPR obligations.
Can reports be issued in other languages?
Yes. Templates in the languages you report in are loaded as versioned company templates during implementation.
Is Digital Twin Reporting Software part of the ERP?
No. It is a separate companion product that places results on a 3D model and works alongside NDT Reports.

Built for any business that runs on operations
Most companies do not fail at their craft. They lose time, margin and goodwill in the gaps between the tools they use to run the place — a quoting spreadsheet that does not talk to the job sheet, a job sheet that does not reach accounts, and a compliance folder nobody can search when a client asks. Atlantis closes those gaps by putting the whole operation on one platform, so information is entered once and everything downstream stays in step.
What you can run on it
- Sales and CRM — leads, quotes, follow-ups and the pipeline that tells you what next month looks like.
- Projects and job costing — plan the work, track the hours and materials against it, and see the margin while the job is still live rather than at final account.
- Field and service teams — dispatch, schedules, mobile capture that works with no signal, and sign-off from site.
- Inventory and purchasing — stock, suppliers, reorder points and goods receipt, joined to the jobs that consume them.
- People — records, qualifications and licences with renewal reminders, timesheets, leave and payroll.
- Quality and documents — procedures and forms under revision control, with the audit trail an inspection or accreditation body actually asks for.
- Accounts — invoicing, expenses, multi-currency and the reporting your accountant stops chasing you for.
Affordable, accessible, fully customizable — and we mean each word
Affordable because the whole suite is included rather than sold to you a module at a time, and because implementation is done by people who have run operations rather than by a chain of subcontractors. Accessible because it runs in a browser and on a phone, works for a small team on day one, and does not need a specialist on staff to keep it alive. Fully customizable because your process is the thing that makes you competitive — the software should bend to it, not the other way round.
Industries we configure for
Service businesses and contractors, manufacturing and fabrication, trading and distribution, laboratories and testing houses, engineering consultancies, construction and facilities, and asset owners across energy, marine, aerospace and infrastructure. Inspection and testing is where we started, and it remains the sector we go deepest in — but the platform underneath is general-purpose, and most of what it does has nothing to do with inspection at all.
What happens when you get in touch
A short conversation, not a sales sequence. We ask how the business runs today and where it hurts, show you the platform doing that work, and send a written quote shaped to your region, your team size and the scope you actually need. No obligation, nothing to install first, and no pressure to decide on the call. Reach out and tell us what you are trying to fix.
