NDT reporting for Indian inspection companies
Indian NDT companies serve a wide mix of clients in the same month: a PSU refinery shutdown, a boiler repair under IBR, a pressure vessel fabricator exporting to Europe or the Gulf, a cross-country pipeline, a thermal power plant overhaul and a shipyard. Each client has its own report format, its own witnessing inspector and its own idea of what counts as a complete record.
The usual result is a reporting office buried in Word and Excel files, technicians writing readings on paper at site and sending photos over WhatsApp, and reports reaching clients days after the work. When a client or third-party inspection agency queries a result, the evidence is spread across laptops and phones.
The NDT Reports app in Atlantis NDT ERP puts everything on one record. It covers 17 report types, including UT, RT, MT, PT, VT, PAUT, TOFD, PMI, hardness, UT thickness, ferrite, PWHT and computed radiography, each with its own fields and numbering. Every report moves from draft to in progress, review, approved and sent, with inspector, reviewer and approver signatures and a third-party inspector field, and comes out in your own template.
ASNT and ISO 9712 certifications on one team
Indian technicians commonly hold ASNT SNT-TC-1A-based certifications issued by their employer, ISO 9712 certificates through the Indian Society for Non-Destructive Testing's certification scheme, or both. Many also hold PCN or CSWIP for overseas and offshore work. Clients specify which they accept, and PSU tenders often list the required level and scheme.
The ERP's Certificates app records each technician's scheme, certifying body, level, method, issue and expiry dates, OJT and training hours, vision tests and attachments. Status is calculated automatically as active, expiring soon, expired or revoked, daily email alerts can go to your QA team, and timesheets warn when a technician's certificate is not valid.
On the report, the inspector, reviewer and approver sign, and those roles are set to match your written practice. That makes it much harder for a report to go out under the name of a technician whose certificate lapsed last month, because the lapse is visible in the same system.
Atlantis NDT's NDT training is based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A for Level I, II and III. We do not train or certify for ISO 9712, PCN or CSWIP; the ERP simply records those certifications when your people hold them.
From site to client: the report workflow
On most Indian jobs, a report passes through more hands than the technician who made it. The contractor's Level II interprets, the QC engineer or Level III reviews, a TPI agency often witnesses, and the client's engineer accepts. NDT Reports follows that path in five stages:
- Draft: the report is opened against the work order, with contract, drawing, WPS and procedure references already filled in
- In progress: the technician records readings, weld lines with defect type and orientation, and photos, usually in the offline field app
- Review: the reviewer checks technique, coverage, the acceptance standard and the result
- Approved: the approver signs, and the TPI or authorized inspector's name and signature are captured on the report
- Sent: the report is issued in the client's template, and the record shows it has gone
Each report ends with an overall result of acceptable, not acceptable, or acceptable with remarks. The status of every report is visible to the office, so when a site-in-charge calls to ask whether the RT reports for yesterday's joints have gone out, the answer is on screen.
If a reviewer sends a report back, it returns to the technician with comments instead of getting lost in a phone call. Who may review and approve is set during implementation.
IBR boiler work
Boiler and steam piping work in India falls under the Indian Boiler Regulations, with inspection by state boiler inspectorates and recognised inspecting authorities. Radiography of boiler tube and header welds, hardness checks after heat treatment, and thickness surveys of tubes and drums are routine, and the inspecting authority's representative often witnesses the NDT or reviews the reports before acceptance.
NDT Reports suits this work well:
- RT reports record source, technique, and IQI type and placement, with each joint as a weld line carrying defect type and orientation
- PWHT and hardness have their own report types, so heat treatment and hardness records are not squeezed into an RT form
- UT thickness reports record readings by direction for tube and drum surveys during outages
- The third-party or authorized inspector field records the witnessing inspector's name and signature
- WPS, drawing, contract and work order references tie each report to the approved IBR documentation
IBR documentation formats vary by state and by inspecting authority. Where a specific format is required, it is loaded as a versioned company template during implementation. The app records the data and sign-offs; acceptance under IBR remains with the inspecting authority.
PESO, pressure vessels and fabrication for export
Pressure vessels for compressed and liquefied gases come under PESO, the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation, through rules such as the Static and Mobile Pressure Vessels (Unfired) Rules. Fabricators in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu also build to ASME Section VIII and to EN standards for export to Europe and the Gulf.
For the NDT company, each of those jobs needs a report set that fits into the fabricator's final documentation dossier. NDT Reports records the references a dossier reviewer checks, including the drawing, WPS, procedure and standard, and produces reports in the fabricator's or end client's format using versioned templates. Excel registers, which many fabricators use to summarise every joint, are filled automatically by mapping fields to cells.
Report types typically used on fabrication jobs:
- RT and CR, UT, PAUT and TOFD for longitudinal and circumferential seams
- MT and PT for nozzle welds, attachments and back-gouged roots
- PMI and ferrite for stainless and alloy vessels
- PWHT and hardness for heat-treated equipment
The third-party inspector field records the TPI agency's or authorized inspector's name and signature where they witness the NDT, which is standard on export orders.
AERB and radiography records
Industrial radiography in India is licensed by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board. Radiography institutions must have an approved radiological safety officer, qualified radiographers, personnel monitoring with TLD badges, and controls over source movement. Those obligations belong to your AERB licence and your radiation protection program.
NDT Reports makes the technical record complete: the RT report records source, technique, and IQI type and placement, and computed radiography has its own report type and numbering. Around the report, the ERP holds related records:
- Each technician's NDT profile records radiation safety training, radiation badge number and medical fitness expiry
- The Fleet app records whether a vehicle can carry radioactive sources, with transport licence number and expiry
- Project records carry safety induction and work permit fields, which refinery and power plant clients ask for before any exposure
AERB-mandated registers such as source logs and dose records stay in the systems your licence requires. The value here is that the RT report and the radiographer's qualifications sit in the same place when a client audits you.
Refineries, PSU tenders and third-party inspection
Refinery and petrochemical work is the backbone of many Indian NDT businesses: Jamnagar, Panipat, Mathura, Kochi, Paradip, Vadinar, Mumbai and Visakhapatnam. PSU work usually comes through tenders from IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, ONGC and GAIL, often with Engineers India or another consultant as PMC, and those tenders set out documentation requirements in detail.
Tender documents often call for specific report formats, named signatories, witness by a TPI agency and a report register submitted with each bill. NDT Reports helps meet those requirements without adding clerical staff:
- Owner and PMC formats are loaded as versioned company templates
- Each report carries the work order and contract references, so reports can be pulled per work order when billing
- Inspector, reviewer, approver and TPI signatures are captured on the report
- Separate numbering per method keeps registers clean and auditable
Shutdowns at PSU refineries are intense. The offline field app, the review queue and the Team Assignments app, which blocks double-booking of technicians and equipment serials and warns about out-of-calibration equipment, keep reports moving through a turnaround without the office falling days behind.
Power plants, pipelines and shipyards
Thermal power stations run by NTPC and state utilities schedule annual and capital overhauls with heavy NDT content: boiler tube thickness surveys, weld RT on replacements, IRIS and eddy current on condenser and heat exchanger tubes, and hardness and PMI on high-temperature piping. Each of these has its own report type in the app.
Cross-country pipelines and city gas distribution networks generate long runs of weld reports on spreads with patchy coverage. The field app works offline, storing drafts and photos on the device and syncing later, so technicians do not need signal on the right-of-way. Offshore work on the western offshore fields raises the same connectivity issue, and the same answer applies.
Shipyards and ship repair yards at Kochi, Mumbai, Visakhapatnam and Goa work with class surveyors from the Indian Register of Shipping and international societies. Marine mode adds a vessel cover page with photo, location and dates, and merges the classification-society certificate from a library covering IRS, DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, Bureau Veritas, RINA and ClassNK, the inspector's Level II cert and the calibration certificate into the PDF. Photos go in a two-up grid.
Connected to crews, equipment and billing
In most Indian NDT companies, the report is only one of several records that must agree: the attendance sheet, the equipment issue register, the calibration certificate and the bill. In the ERP they live together:
- Projects hold the job with site, client PO, contract, methods, codes, scope and acceptance criteria
- Asset Management tracks every instrument and probe by serial number, with issue and return approvals and calibration certificates with expiry alerts
- Team Assignments handle crew dispatch, mobilisation and demobilisation dates, and technician availability
- Procedures keep approved, revision-controlled procedures that reports reference
- Invoicing links bills to the NDT project, PO and site, with labour, equipment and consumable subtotals
When a PSU client's billing engineer asks for the reports behind an invoice line, they come from the same job record.
Personal data, GST and local setup
India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 applies to the personal data your company holds about technicians: names, signatures, certification documents, and vision test and medical fitness records. The ERP does not make you compliant on its own, but it helps you keep that data in one controlled place rather than on laptops and phones. Access to certificates, vision tests and reports is set by role during implementation, and hosting location is agreed with you.
If you also take the Invoicing app, GST is configured locally during implementation using standard Atlantis ERP tax settings. Invoice lines can reference the NDT project, job or PO number and site, which helps when a client wants reports and invoices matched line by line.
Atlantis NDT has a presence in Hyderabad, so implementation and support can run on Indian working hours.
Featured: Digital Twin Reporting Software
Large Indian refiners and power utilities are investing in digital programs for their plants, and inspection data is a natural fit. Engineers want to see findings on the equipment, not read them from a register.
Digital Twin Reporting Software is Atlantis NDT's companion product. It places inspection results on a 3D model of the asset and works alongside the ERP's NDT Reports app. NDT Reports handles capture, workflow, sign-off and the formal report; the digital twin product shows the client where each result sits on the asset.
- Plant engineers can review shutdown findings in context
- Results from successive outages are easier to compare
- It helps an NDT company stand out in technical bid evaluation
- Your signed reports still come from the ERP in the client's format
The ERP app does not build digital twins itself. The 3D product is scoped separately and can be quoted together with NDT Reports.
Implementation for Indian NDT companies
Atlantis NDT deploys and configures the ERP for you. A typical rollout for an Indian inspection company:
- Collect your report formats by method, plus the formats demanded by your main PSU, IBR and fabrication clients
- Load them as versioned templates, mapping Excel registers field by field
- Set numbering per method, and reviewer and approver roles to match your written practice
- Set up Certificates for ASNT and ISO 9712 records, with alert recipients
- Roll out the field app on site tablets or phones and run a real job offline
Anything specific to your clients that the standard app doesn't cover is agreed as customization scope. See the other ERP apps that connect to reporting. The system is affordable, accessible and fully customizable, and pricing is quote on request: request an NDT Reports quote.
Frequently asked questions
Can the software produce reports in IBR or PSU formats?
Yes. Required formats are loaded as versioned company templates during implementation, and Excel formats are filled automatically by mapping fields to cells. Acceptance of the reports remains with the inspecting authority or client.
Can we record both ASNT and ISO 9712 certifications?
Yes. The Certificates app records both, plus PCN and CSWIP, with level, method and expiry. Atlantis NDT's training covers ASNT SNT-TC-1A only.
Does it work on sites without mobile data?
Yes. The field app works offline, stores drafts and photos on the device and syncs when a connection is available.
Can a TPI agency inspector sign the report?
Yes. The third-party or authorized inspector field records their name and signature.
Does it handle GST invoicing?
If you take the Invoicing app, GST is configured locally during implementation using standard Atlantis ERP tax settings. We make no certification claims for any e-invoicing system.
Does it manage AERB licensing records?
No. AERB licensing, source logs and dose records stay in the systems your licence requires. The RT report records source, technique and IQI details, and employee profiles record radiation safety training and badge numbers.
Is Digital Twin Reporting Software part of the ERP?
No. It is a separate companion product that places results on a 3D model and works alongside NDT Reports.

Built for any business that runs on operations
Most companies do not fail at their craft. They lose time, margin and goodwill in the gaps between the tools they use to run the place — a quoting spreadsheet that does not talk to the job sheet, a job sheet that does not reach accounts, and a compliance folder nobody can search when a client asks. Atlantis closes those gaps by putting the whole operation on one platform, so information is entered once and everything downstream stays in step.
What you can run on it
- Sales and CRM — leads, quotes, follow-ups and the pipeline that tells you what next month looks like.
- Projects and job costing — plan the work, track the hours and materials against it, and see the margin while the job is still live rather than at final account.
- Field and service teams — dispatch, schedules, mobile capture that works with no signal, and sign-off from site.
- Inventory and purchasing — stock, suppliers, reorder points and goods receipt, joined to the jobs that consume them.
- People — records, qualifications and licences with renewal reminders, timesheets, leave and payroll.
- Quality and documents — procedures and forms under revision control, with the audit trail an inspection or accreditation body actually asks for.
- Accounts — invoicing, expenses, multi-currency and the reporting your accountant stops chasing you for.
Affordable, accessible, fully customizable — and we mean each word
Affordable because the whole suite is included rather than sold to you a module at a time, and because implementation is done by people who have run operations rather than by a chain of subcontractors. Accessible because it runs in a browser and on a phone, works for a small team on day one, and does not need a specialist on staff to keep it alive. Fully customizable because your process is the thing that makes you competitive — the software should bend to it, not the other way round.
Industries we configure for
Service businesses and contractors, manufacturing and fabrication, trading and distribution, laboratories and testing houses, engineering consultancies, construction and facilities, and asset owners across energy, marine, aerospace and infrastructure. Inspection and testing is where we started, and it remains the sector we go deepest in — but the platform underneath is general-purpose, and most of what it does has nothing to do with inspection at all.
What happens when you get in touch
A short conversation, not a sales sequence. We ask how the business runs today and where it hurts, show you the platform doing that work, and send a written quote shaped to your region, your team size and the scope you actually need. No obligation, nothing to install first, and no pressure to decide on the call. Reach out and tell us what you are trying to fix.
