NDT Inspection Services in Phoenix

In brief: Atlantis NDT mobilises NDT inspection crews to sites across metro Phoenix: semiconductor and advanced-manufacturing construction, aerospace plants, power stations, water infrastructure, fuel terminals, data centres and fabrication shops, from Glendale and Goodyear to Tempe, Chandler and Mesa. Methods include ultrasonic thickness and corrosion mapping, PAUT and TOFD, radiography, magnetic particle, penetrant, visual and eddy current testing, plus PMI, ferrite, hardness and holiday testing. Atlantis is Houston-based and has no office, lab or yard in Arizona; crews travel to your site on agreed dates. Procedures are approved by an ASNT NDT Level III, technicians are certified under an SNT-TC-1A written practice, and every job ends with a code-referenced digital report.

Phoenix is a different inspection market from the Gulf Coast. There is no refinery and only a handful of classic process plants. Demand comes instead from construction quality control on very large manufacturing projects, from the plant equipment of aerospace manufacturers, from utilities that run generating stations, canals and pumping plants, and from the heat, which changes how field NDT is done for much of the year. For statewide coverage, including Tucson and the copper districts, see NDT inspection services in Arizona. Ready to scope a job? Send your Phoenix inspection request.

Where NDT inspection work is in Phoenix

Direct answer: Phoenix inspection work falls into four groups: semiconductor and advanced-manufacturing construction in north Phoenix and Chandler; aerospace manufacturing in Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa; power, water and utility infrastructure, from Palo Verde west of the city to the canal network; and fuel, data-centre and fabrication work across the Valley.

Semiconductor and advanced-manufacturing construction

TSMC's Arizona fab campus in north Phoenix and Intel's Chandler campus, which with roughly 12,000 employees is the second-largest Intel location in the United States, sit at the centre of the Valley's manufacturing build-out. A fab is built around enormous volumes of piping (process chemical, specialty and bulk gas, ultra-pure water, exhaust and chilled water) plus structural steel and central utility plants. Most NDT on these projects is construction quality control: radiography or UT of process piping welds to ASME B31.3, at examination percentages set by fluid service and the owner's specification; PMI on alloy components; ferrite measurement on stainless welds; visual and borescope inspection of orbital-welded high-purity tube; and visual, MT and UT on structural welds to AWS D1.1. Atlantis works as a mobilised crew to the contractor's or owner's inspection and test plan, with site badging and orientation completed before the first shift. See weld inspection in Phoenix and construction NDT in Phoenix.

Aerospace manufacturing

Honeywell Aerospace is headquartered in Phoenix, with many of its avionics and mechanical facilities in the Valley. Boeing builds the AH-64 Apache in Mesa, Luke Air Force Base sits in the western suburbs, and Phoenix Sky Harbor handles about 45 million passengers a year. Production NDT on flight hardware is normally performed by the manufacturer's own NAS 410-certified staff or by suppliers the prime has approved, so Atlantis's role at aerospace sites is usually on the plant side: compressed-air receivers and autoclaves, cranes and lifting equipment, presses, tooling and steelwork, plus Level III support for procedures and written practices. NAS 410 Level 3 work is available only through an associate. See aerospace NDT in Phoenix.

Power, water and utilities

Palo Verde Generating Station, near Tonopah about 45 miles west of downtown Phoenix, is operated by Arizona Public Service (APS) and runs three pressurised-water reactors. It has the third-largest capacity of any U.S. power station and recorded the largest annual net generation of any U.S. plant in 2021. Its in-service inspection follows the owner's ASME Section XI programme, so independent contractors support only the scopes the owner qualifies them for, typically balance-of-plant. APS serves about two-thirds of the metro and modernised its Ocotillo gas plant in 2019. Salt River Project (SRP) supplies power across much of the rest of the Valley, runs the Santan generating station and a canal network that includes the Arizona Canal of almost 39 miles, and manages dams on the Salt and Verde rivers. The Central Arizona Project's 336-mile canal lifts Colorado River water by up to 2,900 feet through 14 pumping plants. Power work means boiler and HRSG tube surveys and high-energy piping welds to ASME B31.1 at outages; water work means UT thickness, MT and VT on pump casings, discharge lines, gates, penstocks, siphons and cranes. See power generation NDT in Phoenix.

Fuel, data centres and fabrication

Arizona has no operating crude oil refinery, so motor and jet fuel arrive largely by pipeline at bulk terminals and airport fuel facilities in the metro; the pipeline serving the fuel facility at Sky Harbor is among the hazardous liquid systems the Arizona Corporation Commission inspects. Terminal tanks and piping need API 653 and API 570-style NDE. Data-centre campuses bring structural steel, chilled-water piping and generator fuel tanks, and steel fabricators, erectors and skid shops serve all of the above. See manufacturing NDT in Phoenix, pipeline inspection in Phoenix and steel NDT consulting in Phoenix.

Every technique runs on a written procedure approved by an ASNT NDT Level III; where the owner or contractor requires its own procedures or a technique demonstration, we qualify to those first. See conventional NDT and advanced NDT.

Desert heat and the monsoon: field NDT in Phoenix

Direct answer: ASME Section V qualifies standard liquid penetrant techniques for part and penetrant temperatures between 40°F and 125°F (5°C to 52°C), and sun-exposed steel in a Phoenix summer is routinely hotter than that. Penetrant work therefore needs scheduling, shade or a procedure qualified for the actual temperature. Ultrasonic, magnetic particle and radiographic work are also affected, and the summer monsoon adds dust storms, sudden heavy rain and lightning.

Penetrant. On hot steel, penetrant dries before the dwell time is complete and can hide indications. The options are early-morning work, shading or tenting with the surface temperature measured and recorded, or a procedure qualified for non-standard temperatures under Article 6.

Ultrasonic. Couplant thins and evaporates, and sound velocity in steel changes with temperature, so thickness calibration is checked on a reference block close to the part temperature. Probes and PAUT wedges have their own temperature limits.

Magnetic particle and radiography. Wet MT baths evaporate quickly, visible-contrast MT is hard to read in bright sun, and fluorescent MT needs a tent outdoors. Film needs protected storage, so digital radiography is often the practical choice, and on crowded construction sites a radiography exclusion zone stops other trades, one more reason PAUT is often preferred where accepted.

Crew and calendar. Heat-illness prevention shortens productive time on summer shifts, and some outdoor scopes move to night work. Monsoon dust contaminates prepared surfaces, rain stops outdoor work and lightning suspends work at height. Outdoor-heavy scopes go best in the cooler months where projects allow. Plan a Phoenix field scope around the heat.

API 510, 570 and 653 NDE in Phoenix

Direct answer: Atlantis performs the NDE and data review for the owner's API 510, API 570 and API 653 programmes. Atlantis is not an API Authorized Inspector or Authorized Inspection Agency, does not supply API-certified inspectors, and never signs as inspector of record.

Pressure vessels. Phoenix vessels sit mostly in central utility plants, bulk gas and chemical systems, generating stations, aerospace autoclaves, compressed-air systems and food plants. We take UT thickness at CMLs, examine nozzle and attachment welds with MT or PT, and apply PAUT or TOFD where cracking or repairs justify it. For anyone searching for "pressure vessel maintenance" in Phoenix, the split matters: Atlantis examines vessels but does not repair them. Repairs and alterations to ASME-stamped vessels are made by National Board "R" certificate holders to the National Board Inspection Code, and we can perform the NDE before and after. See pressure vessel inspection in Phoenix and API 510 inspection support.

Piping. Utility, process and terminal piping is surveyed at the CMLs on your isometrics, with soil-to-air interfaces, including lines through irrigated landscaping, worth adding. See piping inspection in Phoenix, corrosion inspection in Phoenix and API 570 inspection support.

Tanks. Fuel terminal tanks follow API 653: MFL floor scanning with UT prove-up, shell thickness, shell-to-bottom weld examination and settlement data. Welded steel water reservoirs are generally built to AWWA D100 and inspected under the utility's own programme. See tank inspection in Phoenix and API 653 inspection support.

Atlantis does not offer risk-based inspection (API 580/581) or fitness-for-service (API 579) assessments; those stay with the owner's engineers and specialists.

Arizona and federal rules that shape Phoenix inspection

Direct answer: Boilers fall under the Boiler Safety Section of the Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health (ADOSH), part of the Industrial Commission of Arizona; industrial radiography under the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) Bureau of Radiation Control, because Arizona is an NRC Agreement State; pipelines under the Arizona Corporation Commission's Office of Pipeline Safety; and oil storage under EPA's SPCC rule.

Boilers: ADOSH Boiler Safety Section

The section enforces the Arizona Boiler Act (A.R.S. Title 23, Chapter 2, Article 11, enacted in 1977) and the Arizona Boiler Rules (A.A.C. Title 20, Chapter 5, Article 4), covering boilers, direct-fired steam-jacketed kettles and lined hot-water heaters. Since July 1, 2017, certificate and mandatory in-service inspections have been performed by third-party inspection agencies on ADOSH's authorised list, and repairs must follow the National Board Inspection Code. Unfired pressure vessels are not named in the published scope, so confirm jurisdiction for a specific item with the section. ADOSH also runs Arizona's state occupational safety and health plan, which applies process safety management to covered processes.

Radiography: ADHS

Industrial radiography needs a radioactive-materials licence from the state in an Agreement State, or from the NRC elsewhere. In Arizona, the ADHS Bureau of Radiation Control's sealed-source industrial radiography rules (A.A.C. Title 9, Chapter 7, Article 5) require a licensee to have a radiographer training programme, radiographers certified in radiation safety, written operating and emergency procedures, and identified field stations. Atlantis does not claim to hold any particular licence; the radiography arrangements are confirmed per job. Palo Verde's reactors are licensed by the NRC directly.

Pipelines: Arizona Corporation Commission

The ACC's Office of Pipeline Safety inspects all intrastate pipeline operators and, under an agreement with PHMSA, acts as its agent for interstate pipelines in Arizona; it also runs damage prevention under Arizona 811. Federal rules are in 49 CFR Parts 192 and 195, and new girth welds usually follow API 1104.

Fuel storage: SPCC

Facilities with more than 1,320 gallons of aggregate aboveground oil storage, including many data centres with generator fuel, fall under EPA's SPCC rule (40 CFR Part 112), which expects bulk containers to be inspected to an industry standard such as API 653 or STI SP001. See aboveground storage tank inspection.

Personnel certification and reports

Direct answer: Atlantis technicians are certified by their employer under a written practice based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A, with procedures and examinations under an ASNT NDT Level III. Aerospace primes usually require NAS 410 for flight hardware, nuclear owners apply their own qualification programmes, and construction owners add site training; those requirements are confirmed at quotation.

Reports tie every result to the asset, weld or CML, procedure revision, technician certification and instrument calibration, quote the acceptance criteria, list coverage limits and are reviewed under ASNT Level III oversight. On construction projects they are organised for turnover: weld numbers matching the isometrics and weld log, examination percentages tracked per line class, and repairs and progressive examinations traceable to the original indication. Inspection companies can run jobs and certifications on Atlantis ERP in Phoenix; owners can place results on a 3D model through digital twins in Phoenix or 3D scanning in Phoenix.
