Ultrasonic Testing (UT) Services in Phoenix 2026 — ASNT Level III Led
Atlantis NDT delivers professional Ultrasonic Testing (UT) inspection services in Phoenix from ASNT NDT Level II + III certified inspectors. Specialising in weld inspection, thickness measurement, corrosion mapping and flaw detection. UT demand around Phoenix comes mainly from semiconductor, aerospace & solar. Technicians are qualified to the governing SNT-TC-1A written practice, and procedures and reports are reviewed by an ASNT NDT Level III (UT, RT, MT, PT, VT). Where we work: nationwide. Technicians are mobilised to your site anywhere in the USA; apart from the Houston office there is no local office, so mobilisation is planned and quoted for each job.
For the national service, with what you receive, what UT finds and how crews are mobilised, see ultrasonic inspection services.
Ultrasonic Testing Method Overview
Ultrasonic Testing (UT) is a core NDT method covered in detail at our UT pillar hub. Per ASME Section V, ASTM E-series, ISO 17635 + applicable method-specific standard. Atlantis NDT Level III approves every Procedure + signs off final disposition. Calibration block + reference standard traceable to NIST / NPL / PTB. Procedure pack + technique sheet + qualification block included.
Code Coverage and Personnel Certification
Delivery Model in Phoenix
On-site mobilisation across North America, confirmed in your RFQ. Remote procedure authoring + ASNT NDT Level III sign-off. Hybrid model — local Level II + Atlantis Level III remote oversight — common pattern for multi-region EPC + asset-owner customers in Phoenix.

Ultrasonic testing in Phoenix: Arizona's third-party boiler inspections and UT in desert heat
In Phoenix, ultrasonic testing supports two kinds of work: the boiler inspections that Arizona now leaves to authorized third-party agencies, and plant, pipeline and structural scopes where wall thickness or weld quality has to be proven. Atlantis mobilises UT crews from Houston, examines to a qualified procedure with ASNT NDT Level III review, and plans Phoenix work around summer heat.
How Arizona inspects boilers. The Boiler Safety Section of the Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health, part of the Industrial Commission of Arizona, stopped performing boiler and water heater inspections itself on July 1, 2017. Certificate and mandatory in-service inspections are now carried out by third-party agencies on the ADOSH authorized list, or by the insurer's state-commissioned inspector where the boiler is insured. Owners remain responsible for getting inspections done and keeping the certificate current, and the state does not send a reminder before a delinquency notice.
The Arizona inspection cycle UT data has to fit:
- Power boilers above 15 psi: an annual internal certificate inspection plus an external under operating conditions about six months later.
- High-temperature water boilers above 160 psi or 250°F: an annual certificate inspection.
- Heating and process boilers at 15 psi or less: every two years.
The section's published scope covers boilers, direct-fired steam-jacketed kettles and lined hot water heaters; it does not list unfired pressure vessels. For vessels in Phoenix plants, intervals usually come from the owner's own programme, an insurer or API 510 where it has been adopted, so the first question on a vessel UT scope is whose interval the data is serving. Atlantis performs the NDE and data review for that programme; it is not an Authorized Inspector and does not sign as inspector of record.
Writing for the third-party inspector. In Arizona the person reading a boiler UT report usually works for an authorized agency or an insurer, not for the owner. Reports are therefore laid out for that reader: the boiler identified as the certificate shows it, drum, header and tube readings at named locations, a comparison with the previous campaign, and any reading below the minimum the inspector set flagged on the front page rather than buried in a table.
Working UT in Phoenix heat. Summer sun can push exposed steel far above air temperature. Sound velocity changes with temperature in steel and changes much more in plastic wedges and delay lines, so a probe calibrated in an air-conditioned truck will mis-measure on hot pipe. Crews calibrate on a block brought to the working temperature, use high-temperature couplant and probes where surfaces are hot, and schedule outdoor thickness surveys for early morning. Couplant also evaporates fast in dry air, which shows up as dropped readings unless the technician watches the signal.
For the wider Phoenix picture, see NDT inspection services in Phoenix and pressure vessel inspection in Phoenix. Weld examination beyond conventional UT is covered by phased array inspection, and the national ultrasonic testing service lists what each survey includes. Local technicians can train through NDT training in Phoenix. To scope UT in the Phoenix area, send the asset list and access window.
Need ultrasonic testing (UT) done, or learned?
Atlantis provides ultrasonic testing (UT) as an inspection service, trains technicians in it, and lets teams practise it on the Practical NDT simulator.
Prepare a useful ultrasonic examination scope
A thickness survey and a weld examination need different setups. For a thickness survey, supply nominal dimensions, material and repeatable measurement locations. For welds, provide the joint drawing, thickness, access and the discontinuities the technique must detect.
Understand the technique limitations
Check that the selected probe, reference standard and scan coverage suit the geometry. Coupling, surface condition, temperature and material structure can affect the response. An A-scan is a signal to interpret within the approved technique; a peak alone does not identify the cause.
Specify the records and review
Keep the location reference, calibration or reference checks, instrument settings and coverage limitations with the results. A corrosion trend is meaningful only when successive measurements refer to comparable locations and conditions.
