Visual Testing (VT) Services in Phoenix 2026 — ASNT Level III Led

Atlantis NDT delivers professional Visual Testing (VT) inspection services in Phoenix from ASNT NDT Level II + III certified inspectors. Specialising in direct and remote visual inspection of welds, structures and components. VT demand around Phoenix comes mainly from semiconductor, aerospace & solar. Technicians are qualified to the governing SNT-TC-1A written practice, and procedures and reports are reviewed by an ASNT NDT Level III (UT, RT, MT, PT, VT). Where we work: nationwide. Technicians are mobilised to your site anywhere in the USA; apart from the Houston office there is no local office, so mobilisation is planned and quoted for each job.

Visual Testing Method Overview

Visual Testing (VT) is a core NDT method covered in detail at our VT pillar hub. Per ASME Section V, ASTM E-series, ISO 17635 + applicable method-specific standard. Atlantis NDT Level III approves every Procedure + signs off final disposition. Calibration block + reference standard traceable to NIST / NPL / PTB. Procedure pack + technique sheet + qualification block included.

Visual testing in Phoenix: what Arizona boiler inspections and plant owners expect from VT

Visual testing in Phoenix is the first examination on almost every scope: boiler internals opened for Arizona's third-party certificate inspections, welds on new plant and structural steel, and in-service equipment where corrosion, distortion or leakage must be recorded before other methods are chosen. Atlantis performs VT to a written procedure under ASNT NDT Level III review and mobilises crews to Phoenix sites.

Getting equipment ready for an Arizona inspection. Owners must file a Notice of Install or Reinstall with ADOSH when a boiler or water heater is new or reinstalled, and the unit then needs its initial certificate inspection from an authorized agency. A VT crew can open, clean and photograph the unit ahead of that visit, record nameplate data and note anything the inspector will want to see, so the commissioned inspector's time on site goes on the inspection itself.

Arizona equipment classes with light mandatory cycles, where the owner's own VT is often the only regular look:

  • Direct-fired steam-jacketed kettles: a certificate inspection every two years.
  • Hot-water boilers at 160 psi or less and 250°F or less: one initial certificate inspection, which may be external, and none required after that.
  • Lined hot water heaters above 200,000 BTU/hr input, 210°F or 120 gallons: one initial inspection, which may also be external.

Equipment with no further mandatory inspection still corrodes, scales and leaks. Owners who want condition evidence between replacements, or for their insurer, commission periodic VT with UT thickness at the points the VT identifies.

Light, glare and heat. ASME Section V Article 9 sets a minimum light intensity at the examination surface and limits on viewing distance and angle for direct visual examination. Bright desert sun is not the same as adequate light: glare washes out fine detail and hard shadows hide undercut and pitting, so technicians shade the area and use a measured light source even outdoors. Inside boilers and vessels, summer heat shortens safe entry time, and remote visual equipment with recorded footage lets more surface be covered per entry.

Dust and monsoon season. Fine desert dust settles on every exposed surface and inside open equipment, and the summer monsoon brings dust storms and sudden downpours that halt outdoor work. Surfaces are cleaned before examination, because dust fills pits and softens the edges of undercut, and each photograph carries a scale and a location reference so a finding can be found again after the next storm has covered it.

New construction. Fabrication and erection welds on Phoenix-area projects pass VT before any volumetric method is spent: AWS D1.1 for structural steel and ASME B31.3 for process piping set the acceptance criteria. Weld inspection in Phoenix and commissioning inspection cover those scopes, and the national visual testing service describes direct and remote examination.

The wider market is mapped on NDT inspection services in Phoenix. Technicians can train through visual testing training and the VT simulator. To book VT ahead of an Arizona certificate inspection, send the equipment list.

Need visual testing (VT) done, or learned?

Atlantis provides visual testing (VT) as an inspection service, trains technicians in it, and lets teams practise it on the Practical NDT simulator.

Prepare a useful visual examination scope

Agree what must be examined and what constitutes a reportable condition. Supply drawings, weld or component identification, accessible surfaces and the acceptance document. Identify whether the examination is direct or requires an optical aid or remote system.

Understand the technique limitations

Access, lighting, viewing angle and surface condition affect the examination. A photograph can preserve an observation, but it may not establish dimensions, scale or coverage by itself. Visual examination of an accessible surface does not demonstrate the absence of internal damage.

Specify the records and review

Use a consistent location reference for observations and photographs. Include a scale where it is relevant and record inaccessible areas separately. Have the responsible reviewer decide which findings require measurement, another NDT method, repair assessment or follow-up.
