Company training in a central-certification world
Across the UK and Europe, most NDT technicians are certified under EN ISO 9712 through a third-party scheme. In the UK that usually means PCN, administered by BINDT. Elsewhere, national bodies such as DGZfP in Germany and COFREND in France run schemes of their own. Aerospace is the exception: EN 4179 keeps certification with the employer, under a written practice and a responsible Level 3.
Central certification settles who is qualified in a method. It doesn't settle whether a technician knows your procedures, your clients' specifications, your reporting templates or the safety rules at the next site. Those gaps are the employer's to close, and your ISO 9001 quality system, client audits and third-party inspectors will all want to see how you close them.
That is what the eLearning app in Atlantis NDT ERP is for: the company training around certification. Onboarding, procedure familiarisation, client-specific courses, radiation safety content, refreshers after a long gap in a method. The portal is not an exam route for PCN or any other certification scheme. Atlantis's own training follows ASNT SNT-TC-1A, which matters to European companies that work for US clients, on export fabrication or on projects specifying ASNT-certified personnel.
Running training inside the ERP means the record of who learned what sits beside the technician's certificates, vision tests, availability and jobs. When an auditor asks, you open one system.
What the eLearning app includes
Configured by Atlantis for NDT companies, the portal gives you:
- Level I, II and III sections, so learners see material suited to their level.
- Video lessons played from OneDrive or SharePoint with download protection. Your videos stay in your Microsoft 365 storage, which helps if you've already decided where company data lives.
- Quizzes, with question banks importable from Word files.
- Certificates of completion for finished courses.
- Learner accounts created by admins, with access granted and revoked by admins.
- A learner dashboard showing courses and progress.
- Auto-join for invited members.
- Online course sales, if you train outside candidates.
- A Practical NDT section opening Atlantis's 3D practice platform.
Anything not on this list is configured during implementation as part of an agreed scope, not presented as a built-in feature.
Practical NDT: practice time you can't otherwise schedule
Whatever scheme your technicians hold, practice time is scarce. Flaw specimens, reference blocks, PAUT sets and TOFD kit are out on jobs, and the senior technician who could coach a trainee is offshore or on a refinery outage.
Practical NDT is Atlantis's immersive 3D, game-like practice platform. Learners work through UT, PAUT, RT, MT, PT, VT, ET and TOFD scenarios on virtual welds, pipes, pressure vessels and castings: setting up, scanning, finding indications and making calls, with no equipment tied up and no cost to a mistake.
Every learner enrolled in the eLearning portal gets a Practical NDT section. Access is granted automatically on enrolment, or an admin grants it manually.
European companies tend to use it for:
- Trainees and apprentices building familiarity with methods before supervised work on real parts.
- Cross-skilling conventional UT technicians toward PAUT and TOFD, which are increasingly specified on weld inspection in place of radiography.
- Keeping skills warm for technicians who spend months on one method and then need another.
Practical NDT is practice, not documented industrial experience, and it doesn't replace any practical examination. It helps people arrive at real specimens better prepared.

PED work and the EN ISO standards your technicians use
If you inspect pressure equipment for European manufacturers, the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU shapes your week. Annex I, section 3.1.3 requires that NDT personnel on pressure equipment in categories III and IV are approved by a third-party organisation recognised by a Member State, which in practice usually means EN ISO 9712 certification. In Great Britain, the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 carry the same structure over.
Certification covers the method. The procedures your technicians follow on a job come from the standards the manufacturer and notified body specify: EN ISO 17640 for UT of welds, EN ISO 11666 for UT acceptance levels, EN ISO 17636 for radiography of welds, EN ISO 17638 for MT, EN ISO 3452-1 for PT and EN ISO 17637 for visual testing. Each client may add a layer, and your written procedures translate all of it into what a technician actually does.
The portal is a practical place for that translation. Examples:
- A short course on each of your written procedures, with a quiz, assigned whenever a procedure revision is issued.
- An acceptance-level refresher for technicians moving between clients who specify different quality levels.
- A course on your reporting templates, so reports reach the notified body in the format expected.
Your Level 3 decides content and pass marks; the portal delivers it and keeps the record.
North Sea offshore and Aberdeen-based crews
Offshore work in the UK and Norwegian sectors brings its own training rhythm. Technicians rotate between platform trips and onshore time. Many are also rope access technicians under IRATA, combining NDT with access work on structures that are hard to reach. Offshore survival and induction, typically OPITO BOSIET and related courses, is delivered by accredited centres. Operator and duty holder inductions come on top.
The NDT company's own share of training is what the eLearning portal handles well:
- Pre-trip briefings on the procedures and techniques for a specific campaign, such as corrosion mapping, weld inspection on topsides or subsea-related onshore work.
- Onshore refreshers completed between trips, so technicians don't lose method skills during long stints on one task.
- Reporting discipline for the duty holder's expectations.
A practical note: lessons stream from OneDrive or SharePoint, so they need a reasonable connection. Most crews complete courses onshore or in accommodation with decent bandwidth rather than on the platform itself.
Offshore contracts also involve high staff turnover and contractor churn. Admin-controlled accounts and access revocation mean your course material doesn't leave with people who move to a competitor at the end of a campaign.
UK HSE, IRR17 and radiography safety
Industrial radiography in Great Britain falls under the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017, enforced by the HSE. Employers must register or obtain consent for radiography work, appoint a radiation protection adviser, designate radiation protection supervisors, and make sure classified persons and others receive suitable information, instruction and training. Other European countries apply the Basic Safety Standards Directive through their own national rules.
The eLearning portal doesn't replace your RPA's advice or your local rules. It gives your RPS and management a straightforward way to deliver company content and prove completion:
- Local rules and contingency plans as short lessons with a quiz.
- Awareness training for staff who work near radiography but don't perform it.
- Periodic refresher content assigned to classified workers.
The Certificates app's employee NDT profile holds radiation safety training, badge number and medical fitness expiry. Practical NDT's RT scenarios let trainees practise technique and interpretation without any dose. And because PAUT and TOFD increasingly replace radiography on welds, the same platform supports the switch.
What content satisfies your regulatory obligations remains your RPA's and RPS's judgment.
GDPR and technician personal data
Training records are personal data under the GDPR and, in the UK, the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act 2018. Quiz scores, completion history and learner account details identify individuals, and technicians have rights over that information.
The eLearning app gives you practical controls to support your data protection policies:
- Accounts are created by admins, so you know who holds one and why.
- Access is granted and revoked by admins, so leavers lose access promptly.
- Videos stay in your own OneDrive or SharePoint, where your existing data decisions already apply.
Hosting location, retention periods and which roles can see training records are agreed with you during implementation. Atlantis does not claim the software makes you GDPR compliant. Your policies and your data protection lead do that; the configuration is set up to support them.
Multilingual crews
European NDT crews are often international. A single contract might include technicians from Poland, Portugal, Romania, Italy and the UK. The portal doesn't translate content automatically, but it handles this simply: build language versions of key courses, import quiz questions from Word files in each language and invite each technician to the version they understand best. For safety-critical content such as radiography local rules, that's worth the effort.
Connecting training to the rest of the ERP
- Certificates records EN ISO 9712, PCN, CSWIP, SNT-TC-1A and other certifications held by your technicians, with level, method, certifying body and expiry, plus vision tests including Jaeger near-vision results. Certificates expiring within 90 days are flagged, which prompts refresher assignments.
- Team Assignments treats training as an availability status, so nobody is dispatched on a course day.
- Procedures holds your controlled procedure revisions; when one is approved, a matching course update can be assigned.
- Surveys covers competency questionnaires and feedback.
How completions relate to training hours on the technician record is agreed during implementation.
Who uses the portal in a European NDT company
Level 3 and technical managers
They own procedure courses and quizzes, decide what each client contract requires, and use completion records during ISO 9001 audits, client audits and notified body reviews. In aerospace shops working under EN 4179, the responsible Level 3 uses the portal to run the organised training the written practice defines.
RPAs, RPSs and safety leads
They assign local rules and radiation awareness content and check who has completed it before radiography work starts on a site.
Technicians, trainees and apprentices
They follow their courses on the dashboard, complete refreshers between offshore trips or outages, and open Practical NDT whenever they want practice time.
Operations and resourcing
They check training alongside certification and availability before putting a technician on a campaign, so nobody arrives at a fabrication yard or platform without the client course done.
HR and data protection leads
They manage learner accounts, remove access for leavers and contractors at the end of a campaign, and work with Atlantis during implementation on who can see training records.
Implementation
Atlantis sets up eLearning as part of Atlantis NDT ERP or on its own: review your training material and quality system requirements, agree course structure and languages, connect OneDrive or SharePoint, import question banks, configure admin roles and Practical NDT access, pilot and hand over. Cost is quote on request; affordable, accessible, fully customizable. Request a quote for your UK or European team.
Keeping training in step with procedure revisions
European clients and notified bodies care a great deal about document control. A technician working to revision C of your UT procedure when revision D was issued last month is exactly the finding nobody wants in an audit report. The fix isn't more paperwork. The fix is making sure every procedure change reaches the people who use it, and being able to prove it did.
Atlantis NDT ERP's Procedures app already holds your procedure register: document number, revision, method, scope, material, applicable standard and acceptance criteria. Procedures move from draft through review and approval to published, approved revisions are locked, and the full revision history keeps a snapshot of each one. That gives you a reliable answer to which revision is current.
The eLearning portal closes the loop on the people side. A practical routine many companies adopt:
- When a procedure revision is published, your Level 3 updates the matching short course: a video or document walkthrough of what changed and why, and a few quiz questions on the changes.
- Every technician who works to that procedure is invited to the updated course. Auto-join enrols them as they accept.
- The admin view shows who has completed it. Operations can hold back anyone who hasn't before they go to a job using that procedure.
- The completion certificate becomes your evidence that the revision was briefed.
How tightly this routine is tied into the ERP, for example who gets notified and which roles can see completion status, is configured during implementation as part of the scope agreed with you. The routine itself works from day one because both apps sit in the same system.
Beyond oil and gas: wind, rail, power and shipbuilding
European NDT isn't only refineries and offshore platforms. Offshore wind has created steady demand for weld inspection on monopiles, transition pieces and towers, with long runs of automated and manual UT. Rail maintenance relies on ultrasonic and eddy current inspection of axles, wheelsets and track components. Power generation, from gas turbines to conventional boilers, and shipbuilding and repair yards along the North Sea and Mediterranean coasts all bring their own methods, standards and client expectations. Petrochemical clusters around Rotterdam, Antwerp and Teesside keep radiography and PAUT crews busy through turnaround seasons.
Each sector has its own vocabulary and its own quality expectations, and technicians moving between them need to adjust quickly. A UT technician who has spent two years on monopile welds needs a refresher before a rail axle job, and vice versa.
The portal lets you organise training by sector as well as by level and method. Common course groups include sector introductions, client-specific procedure courses and short reporting courses for each sector's documentation style. Practical NDT's scenarios on welds, pipes, vessels and castings give technicians hands-on practice with the methods, even when the real components are on the other side of the country.
Your Level 3 decides the content for each sector. The portal keeps the courses in order and the records in one place, so when a rail or wind client audits your training, you open one system instead of three folders.
Frequently asked questions
Is this a route to PCN or EN ISO 9712 certification?
No. The portal is for company training around certification: procedures, clients, safety and refreshers. Atlantis's own courses follow ASNT SNT-TC-1A.
Can the ERP record PCN and other EN ISO 9712 certificates?
Yes. The Certificates app records them with expiry tracking, alongside ASNT-based certifications.
Does it support EN 4179 aerospace written practices?
It can host the organised training your written practice defines, with records per person. It makes no conformity claim on its own.
Can offshore crews use it?
Yes, where they have a reasonable connection. Most complete courses onshore between trips.
Where is data held?
Hosting and retention are agreed with you during implementation. Videos remain in your own Microsoft storage.
What does it cost?
Quote on request, based on scope.

Built for any business that runs on operations
Most companies do not fail at their craft. They lose time, margin and goodwill in the gaps between the tools they use to run the place — a quoting spreadsheet that does not talk to the job sheet, a job sheet that does not reach accounts, and a compliance folder nobody can search when a client asks. Atlantis closes those gaps by putting the whole operation on one platform, so information is entered once and everything downstream stays in step.
What you can run on it
- Sales and CRM — leads, quotes, follow-ups and the pipeline that tells you what next month looks like.
- Projects and job costing — plan the work, track the hours and materials against it, and see the margin while the job is still live rather than at final account.
- Field and service teams — dispatch, schedules, mobile capture that works with no signal, and sign-off from site.
- Inventory and purchasing — stock, suppliers, reorder points and goods receipt, joined to the jobs that consume them.
- People — records, qualifications and licences with renewal reminders, timesheets, leave and payroll.
- Quality and documents — procedures and forms under revision control, with the audit trail an inspection or accreditation body actually asks for.
- Accounts — invoicing, expenses, multi-currency and the reporting your accountant stops chasing you for.
Affordable, accessible, fully customizable — and we mean each word
Affordable because the whole suite is included rather than sold to you a module at a time, and because implementation is done by people who have run operations rather than by a chain of subcontractors. Accessible because it runs in a browser and on a phone, works for a small team on day one, and does not need a specialist on staff to keep it alive. Fully customizable because your process is the thing that makes you competitive — the software should bend to it, not the other way round.
Industries we configure for
Service businesses and contractors, manufacturing and fabrication, trading and distribution, laboratories and testing houses, engineering consultancies, construction and facilities, and asset owners across energy, marine, aerospace and infrastructure. Inspection and testing is where we started, and it remains the sector we go deepest in — but the platform underneath is general-purpose, and most of what it does has nothing to do with inspection at all.
What happens when you get in touch
A short conversation, not a sales sequence. We ask how the business runs today and where it hurts, show you the platform doing that work, and send a written quote shaped to your region, your team size and the scope you actually need. No obligation, nothing to install first, and no pressure to decide on the call. Reach out and tell us what you are trying to fix.
