Training for the Gulf's national oil company work
NDT in the Gulf is shaped by a handful of very large asset owners: Saudi Aramco and SABIC in Saudi Arabia, ADNOC in the UAE, QatarEnergy in Qatar, KNPC and KOC in Kuwait, and PDO in Oman. Each has its own engineering standards, contractor approval processes and expectations about the people who inspect their plant. Aramco's SAES and SAIS documents, for example, set out requirements that contractors and their NDT personnel must meet, and technician approvals and client practical demonstrations are common before anyone works on site.
That means an NDT company in the region trains constantly, and not only in methods. Technicians hold a mix of ASNT SNT-TC-1A certifications from their employer and ISO 9712 certifications from various schemes, often earned in different countries before they arrived. On top of that sit client procedures, site rules, reporting formats and safety requirements that change from one contract to the next.
Auditors from the operator, from EPC contractors and from third-party inspection agencies all ask the same question sooner or later: show me this technician's training for this work. If the answer lives in a site office filing cabinet in Jubail and the technician is now in Ruwais, you have a problem.
The eLearning app in Atlantis NDT ERP puts that training and its records in one portal, inside the same system that holds certificates, availability and job history. Atlantis's own training courses follow ASNT SNT-TC-1A, which suits the many Gulf companies whose written practices are ASNT-based.
What the eLearning app includes
As configured by Atlantis for NDT companies:
- Level I, II and III course sections.
- Video lessons played from OneDrive or SharePoint with download protection.
- Quizzes, with questions importable from Word files.
- Certificates of completion.
- Learner accounts created by admins, with access granted and revoked by admins.
- A learner dashboard for courses and progress.
- Auto-join for invited members.
- Online course sales, if you train outside candidates.
- A Practical NDT section opening Atlantis's 3D practice platform.
Anything beyond this, such as a particular report for a client audit, is configured during implementation within an agreed scope rather than presented as built in.
Practical NDT before client practical tests
In the Gulf, a technician's certificate often isn't the last word. Many operators and EPCs want to see a technician perform before approving them for their plant, and a failed demonstration means a mobilised technician sitting idle in camp while you find a replacement.
Practical NDT is Atlantis's immersive 3D, game-like practice platform. Learners work through UT, PAUT, RT, MT, PT, VT, ET and TOFD scenarios on virtual welds, pipes, pressure vessels and castings: setting up, scanning, finding indications and making calls, without tying up an instrument or a calibration block.
Every learner enrolled in the eLearning portal gets a Practical NDT section, with access granted automatically on enrolment or manually by an admin.
Gulf companies find it useful for:
- Warm-up before client demonstrations. Technicians who haven't touched a method for months can refresh their setup and scanning routine in camp the week before.
- Bringing new arrivals up to speed on your preferred techniques before their first job.
- PAUT and TOFD familiarity, as these methods are increasingly specified for weld inspection on major projects.
Practical NDT doesn't replace any client test or practical examination on real specimens. It reduces the chance that a capable technician fails one for lack of recent practice.

Shutdown and turnaround season
The Gulf's turnaround seasons, clustered in the cooler months, are when NDT companies double their headcount overnight. Extra technicians arrive from India, Pakistan, the Philippines and elsewhere, often on short contracts, and every one of them needs to be ready for the client's rules on day one.
The portal is well suited to pre-mobilisation onboarding at that scale:
- Build a shutdown onboarding course once per client: site rules, permit-to-work basics as they apply to your crews, the client's NDT procedures, your reporting requirements and who to call when something goes wrong.
- Invite the whole incoming crew. Auto-join means each person is enrolled as soon as they accept.
- Watch progress from the admin view and chase only the people who haven't finished.
- Issue completion certificates so site supervisors can confirm onboarding at the gate.
- Revoke access at demobilisation, so temporary staff don't keep your procedures and client material.
Doing this online means technicians can complete onboarding while their visa and travel are being processed, not in a crowded induction room on the first morning. The Team Assignments app already handles mobilisation and demobilisation dates and blocks double-booking, so training and dispatch sit in the same system.
Expatriate crews, languages and nationalisation
Gulf NDT crews are among the most international anywhere. A single site team might include technicians whose first language is Hindi, Urdu, Malayalam, Tamil, Tagalog, Arabic or English. Safety-critical content only works if people understand it.
The portal doesn't translate automatically, but it handles multilingual training in a straightforward way. Record video lessons in the languages your crews need, import quiz questions from Word files in each language, and invite each technician to the right version. Many companies keep English as the base for technical content and add language versions for safety and site-rule courses.
Nationalisation programmes add a different kind of training demand. Saudization under Nitaqat, Emiratisation and similar policies in Qatar, Kuwait and Oman push companies to recruit and develop national trainees. Structured Level I courses with Practical NDT access give national trainees a clear path and give you evidence of development effort.
Expatriate employment also means a lot of personal documentation: passports, visas, iqamas and work permits. Those belong in the employee record managed during implementation, not in the learning portal. Keeping them together in one ERP, rather than in separate spreadsheets, is part of the point.
Radiography and regional regulators
Industrial radiography in the Gulf is regulated nationally. In Saudi Arabia, the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Commission licenses radiation practices; in the UAE, the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation does. Other states have their own authorities. All expect licensees to train radiography workers in radiation safety and the company's procedures, and to keep records.
The portal gives your radiation protection officer a clear way to deliver company content and prove completion: operating and emergency procedures, radiation awareness for helpers and nearby workers, and periodic refreshers. The Certificates app's employee NDT profile records radiation safety training, badge numbers and medical fitness expiry, while the Fleet app records which vehicles can carry radioactive sources and their transport licence expiry. Practical NDT's RT scenarios let trainees practise technique and interpretation without dose. What satisfies your licence conditions is decided by your RPO and regulator.
Connecting training to certificates and dispatch
- Certificates records ASNT SNT-TC-1A, ISO 9712 and other certifications against each technician, with level, method, certifying body and expiry, plus vision tests. Certificates expiring within 90 days are flagged with warning tasks, the cue to assign a refresher.
- Team Assignments uses training as an availability status and blocks overlapping bookings.
- Timesheets warn when a technician's certificate isn't valid.
- Surveys handle competency questionnaires and client-required feedback forms.
How course completions relate to training hours on a technician's record is agreed during implementation.
Selling courses in the region
Many Gulf NDT companies also train outsiders: client inspection staff, national trainees sponsored by other employers, or technicians preparing for a move into the industry. The portal supports online course sales, with orders and invoices flowing into the ERP's accounting. VAT is configured for your country during implementation; Atlantis does not claim any certified e-invoicing status. Be clear in course descriptions that completion is not certification.
Who uses the portal in a Gulf NDT company
Level III and QA/QC managers
They build client procedure and onboarding courses, set quiz pass marks and pull completion records when an operator, EPC or third-party inspection agency audits your personnel files.
Radiation protection officers
They assign radiation safety content to radiography crews, helpers and drivers, and keep completion evidence ready for the national regulator's inspection.
Technicians and trainees
They complete onboarding before they fly, study in camp after shift, take quizzes and open Practical NDT to practise before a client demonstration.
Project and operations managers
They check that the full shutdown crew has finished the client's onboarding course before mobilisation, alongside certificate status and availability in the same system.
HR and admin
They create accounts for incoming crews, track national trainees' development, and revoke access when short-contract staff demobilise. For a company that may add and release many people in a single season, that control matters.
Implementation
Atlantis sets up eLearning as part of Atlantis NDT ERP or on its own. We review your written practice, client requirements and existing material, agree course structure and languages, connect OneDrive or SharePoint, import Word question banks, set admin roles and Practical NDT access, and pilot with one crew before the next shutdown. Cost is quote on request; the product is affordable, accessible and fully customizable. Request a quote for your Gulf team.
Major projects, EPC contractors and third-party inspection
Alongside maintenance and turnarounds, the Gulf runs some of the largest construction programmes in the energy world: gas processing expansions, refinery upgrades, petrochemical complexes, pipelines, desalination and power plants. That work flows through EPC contractors from Korea, Japan, Italy, Spain, India, China and the region itself, and NDT companies usually work as their subcontractors.
Each layer brings its own expectations. The owner's standards set the baseline. The EPC contractor adds its project quality plan, inspection and test plans with hold and witness points, and its own reporting templates. A third-party inspection agency may witness work and review personnel files on the owner's behalf. A technician on a major project has to understand all three, and the NDT company has to show it prepared them.
That is a natural job for the eLearning portal. Practical examples:
- Project induction courses for each major project: the owner's NDT requirements as they apply to your scope, the EPC's quality plan, and how hold and witness points affect when your crew can start or report.
- Reporting courses on the EPC's report format, so fewer reports bounce back and fewer days are lost to corrections.
- Method refreshers before high-volume phases, such as weld radiography or PAUT on pipe spools, with Practical NDT scenarios on virtual welds and pipes for practice.
Because courses are grouped and access is controlled by admins, technicians only see the projects they are assigned to. When a project ends or a technician moves to a different contract, admins adjust access accordingly.
Completion records sit in the same ERP as technician certifications, so when a third-party inspector asks for personnel files, your QA team can show certificates and project training together rather than collecting them from different site offices.
Heat, camps and learning after shift
Gulf working life shapes when training can happen. Summer midday work restrictions in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and neighbouring states push outdoor work into early mornings and evenings. Ramadan changes working hours for a month each year. Crews live in camps and accommodation blocks, often far from any training centre, and rotate home on long leave cycles.
Classroom training fights all of that. Getting a crew into one room at one time, with a trainer free, is hard even in a quiet month and close to impossible in shutdown season.
Self-paced online training fits the rhythm better. A technician can watch a lesson during the midday break in summer, complete a quiz in the evening in camp, or finish a refresher while on leave at home before flying back. The learner dashboard shows what's outstanding, so nobody needs a supervisor to remind them which course comes next.
A few practical points Gulf companies plan for:
- Connectivity. Lessons stream from OneDrive or SharePoint, so camp Wi-Fi quality matters. Shorter videos work better than long lectures on shared connections.
- Devices. Most technicians use phones for lessons and quizzes. Practical NDT scenarios are best on a laptop, so some companies set up a shared laptop in camp for practice sessions.
- Deadlines. Set realistic completion expectations around shift patterns and Ramadan hours, and let the admin view show who needs a nudge.
The result is training that keeps moving through the year instead of stopping whenever the site gets busy or the weather turns.
Frequently asked questions
Does the portal get technicians approved by Aramco or ADNOC?
No. Client approvals follow the client's own process. The portal helps you prepare technicians and keep a record of that preparation.
Can we record both ASNT and ISO 9712 certificates?
Yes. The Certificates app records both, with expiry tracking and alerts.
Can we onboard a large turnaround crew quickly?
Yes. Invite the crew to an onboarding course; auto-join enrols them on acceptance, and admins revoke access at demobilisation.
Does it support Arabic, Hindi or other languages?
You can build language versions of courses and assign technicians accordingly. Content isn't translated automatically.
Is VAT handled?
VAT for course sales is configured locally during implementation, with no certification claims.
What does it cost?
Quote on request, based on scope.

Built for any business that runs on operations
Most companies do not fail at their craft. They lose time, margin and goodwill in the gaps between the tools they use to run the place — a quoting spreadsheet that does not talk to the job sheet, a job sheet that does not reach accounts, and a compliance folder nobody can search when a client asks. Atlantis closes those gaps by putting the whole operation on one platform, so information is entered once and everything downstream stays in step.
What you can run on it
- Sales and CRM — leads, quotes, follow-ups and the pipeline that tells you what next month looks like.
- Projects and job costing — plan the work, track the hours and materials against it, and see the margin while the job is still live rather than at final account.
- Field and service teams — dispatch, schedules, mobile capture that works with no signal, and sign-off from site.
- Inventory and purchasing — stock, suppliers, reorder points and goods receipt, joined to the jobs that consume them.
- People — records, qualifications and licences with renewal reminders, timesheets, leave and payroll.
- Quality and documents — procedures and forms under revision control, with the audit trail an inspection or accreditation body actually asks for.
- Accounts — invoicing, expenses, multi-currency and the reporting your accountant stops chasing you for.
Affordable, accessible, fully customizable — and we mean each word
Affordable because the whole suite is included rather than sold to you a module at a time, and because implementation is done by people who have run operations rather than by a chain of subcontractors. Accessible because it runs in a browser and on a phone, works for a small team on day one, and does not need a specialist on staff to keep it alive. Fully customizable because your process is the thing that makes you competitive — the software should bend to it, not the other way round.
Industries we configure for
Service businesses and contractors, manufacturing and fabrication, trading and distribution, laboratories and testing houses, engineering consultancies, construction and facilities, and asset owners across energy, marine, aerospace and infrastructure. Inspection and testing is where we started, and it remains the sector we go deepest in — but the platform underneath is general-purpose, and most of what it does has nothing to do with inspection at all.
What happens when you get in touch
A short conversation, not a sales sequence. We ask how the business runs today and where it hurts, show you the platform doing that work, and send a written quote shaped to your region, your team size and the scope you actually need. No obligation, nothing to install first, and no pressure to decide on the call. Reach out and tell us what you are trying to fix.
