Two certification routes, one training problem
Indian NDT technicians commonly hold certifications from two directions. Many are certified under ISO 9712-based schemes, including ISNT's national certification. Many others, especially those working for export fabricators, EPC contractors on international projects or companies that send crews to the Gulf, are certified by their employer under an ASNT SNT-TC-1A written practice. Plenty of technicians hold both over a career.
Whichever route a technician followed, the employer still has training to deliver: grounding for freshers from diploma and engineering courses, company procedures, client specifications, radiography safety, reporting standards and refreshers. PSU clients, EPCs and third-party inspection agencies audit that training, and tender documents increasingly ask for evidence of personnel qualification and training.
For many Indian NDT companies, the evidence is a register in the office, a set of attendance sheets and a trainer's slides on a pen drive. That works until the trainer changes jobs or a site team needs proof in a hurry.
The eLearning app in Atlantis NDT ERP gives you one portal for that training, inside the same system that holds certificates, availability and job history. Atlantis's own training follows ASNT SNT-TC-1A, and Atlantis has a team in Hyderabad, so Indian companies working to ASNT-based written practices get content and support from people who know how Indian NDT teams work.
What the eLearning app includes
As configured by Atlantis for NDT companies:
- Level I, II and III course sections.
- Video lessons played from OneDrive or SharePoint with download protection, so your videos aren't simply downloaded and forwarded on messaging apps.
- Quizzes, with question banks importable from Word files. Most Indian trainers already keep questions in Word, so this saves real time.
- Certificates of completion.
- Learner accounts created by admins, with access granted and revoked by admins.
- A learner dashboard for courses and progress.
- Auto-join for invited members.
- Online course sales to outside learners.
- A Practical NDT section opening Atlantis's 3D practice platform.
Anything beyond this list is configured during implementation within an agreed scope, not presented as a built-in feature.
Practical NDT for freshers and trainees
India produces a large number of young people who want to enter NDT: diploma holders in mechanical and metallurgy, engineering graduates, and ITI-trained welders moving into inspection. What most of them lack is hands-on time. Equipment is expensive, flawed specimens are scarce, and companies can't spare instruments from site work for practice.
Practical NDT is Atlantis's immersive 3D, game-like practice platform. Learners work through UT, PAUT, RT, MT, PT, VT, ET and TOFD scenarios on virtual welds, pipes, pressure vessels and castings. They set up, scan, find indications and make calls, on a laptop, without a real instrument.
Every learner enrolled in the eLearning portal gets a Practical NDT section, with access granted automatically on enrolment or manually by an admin.
Indian companies use it for:
- Fresher onboarding. New trainees reach their first supervised site job with a sense of what scanning and interpretation look like.
- Moving into advanced methods. PAUT and TOFD are increasingly specified on refinery, power and pipeline projects. Practical NDT gives conventional UT technicians an early feel for them.
- Preparing Gulf-bound crews who will face client practical demonstrations after they arrive.
Practical NDT is practice, not documented industrial experience, and it doesn't replace any practical examination on real specimens.

Boiler, pressure vessel and IBR work
A great deal of Indian NDT work is on boilers and pressure equipment. Boilers fall under the Indian Boiler Regulations, with inspection by state boiler inspectorates and IBR-recognised inspecting authorities. Radiography and ultrasonic testing of boiler tube and header welds are routine on thermal power plants, process boilers and new fabrication. Pressure vessels, gas storage and cylinders bring PESO into the picture under rules such as the SMPV(U) Rules.
Each of these regimes, plus the client's specifications and the fabricator's code (often ASME alongside IBR), shapes what a technician must know. That is exactly the type of training a portal handles well:
- Procedure courses on your RT and UT procedures for boiler tube welds, with quizzes set by your Level III.
- Code awareness for technicians moving between IBR boiler work and ASME pressure vessel work, so they understand which acceptance criteria apply where. Your Level III decides the content.
- Reporting courses on what an inspecting authority or client expects in the report, so fewer reports come back for correction.
Power plant shutdowns, whether at NTPC stations, state utilities or captive plants, bring bursts of boiler tube inspection work. Onboarding a temporary crew through the portal, with auto-join and access revoked after the job, keeps preparation quick and records clean.
Radiography and AERB requirements
Industrial radiography in India is regulated by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board. Radiography institutions need AERB licences, work must be carried out by suitably certified radiography personnel, and a radiological safety officer is responsible for safety at the institution. AERB's requirements cover source handling, storage, transport, personnel monitoring and emergency preparedness, and licensing and personnel matters are handled through its e-LORA system.
The eLearning portal doesn't replace AERB certification or your RSO's responsibilities. It gives your RSO a practical way to deliver company content and prove who completed it:
- Your operating and emergency procedures as short video lessons with a quiz.
- Radiation awareness for helpers, drivers and workers who operate near exposure areas.
- Periodic refresher content assigned to radiography crews.
The Certificates app's employee NDT profile records radiation safety training, TLD badge number and medical fitness expiry. The Fleet app records which vehicles can carry radioactive sources, with transport licence number and expiry. Practical NDT's RT scenarios let trainees practise technique, IQI placement and interpretation without any dose. What content satisfies AERB is your RSO's decision.
Refineries, PSU tenders and EPC projects
India's refining and petrochemical base is huge: Jamnagar on the Gujarat coast, the PSU refineries of IOCL, BPCL and HPCL at Panipat, Mathura, Kochi, Mumbai, Paradip and elsewhere, plus ONGC's offshore and onshore assets and GAIL's pipeline network. Shutdowns at these sites and new project work through large EPC contractors drive much of the country's NDT demand.
PSU tenders and EPC subcontracts set clear expectations for personnel: certified technicians at specified levels, evidence of training, and compliance with the owner's inspection specifications. Pre-qualification questionnaires often ask how you train and how you keep records.
The portal helps in three practical ways:
- Client-specific courses per refinery or EPC, covering their procedures and reporting format, assigned to every technician on that contract.
- Shutdown onboarding at scale, using auto-join, followed by access revocation at demobilisation.
- Evidence for tenders, drawn from one system that shows who was trained on what, next to their certifications in the Certificates app.
These asset owners are named here only as context for the work Indian NDT companies do; none is presented as an Atlantis customer.
Languages, mobile learners and connectivity
Indian crews learn best in the language they think in. Technical content usually stays in English, but safety and site-rule courses land better in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati or Odia, depending on where your crews come from. The portal doesn't translate automatically; build language versions of the courses that matter and invite each technician to the right one. Quiz questions imported from Word work in any language you type them in.
Most Indian learners will use a phone. Lessons stream from OneDrive or SharePoint, so they need a data connection. For crews at remote sites, plan course completion for days in town or at the office rather than on the job.
DPDP Act and learner data
Training records, quiz scores and learner account details are personal data under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. The portal gives you practical controls to support your data practices: accounts created by admins, access granted and revoked by admins, and videos kept in your own Microsoft storage. Hosting, retention and role-based visibility are agreed with you during implementation. Atlantis does not claim the software makes you compliant with the DPDP Act; your policies do that.
Selling courses: institutes and outside learners
India has a busy market for NDT training, and many inspection companies also run a training wing. The portal's online course sales let you sell courses to outside learners, with orders and invoices flowing into the ERP's accounting. GST is configured locally during implementation; Atlantis makes no claim of certified e-invoicing. Be honest in course descriptions: a completion certificate is not NDT certification. Pairing a course with Practical NDT access is a strong offer for learners with no equipment of their own.
Who uses the portal in an Indian NDT company
Level III and QA/QC heads
They build procedure, code awareness and client courses, set quiz pass marks and pull completion records for PSU pre-qualification, EPC audits and third-party inspection agency reviews.
Radiological safety officers
They assign radiation safety content to radiographers, helpers and drivers and keep evidence of completion ready for AERB inspections.
Trainees and technicians
They study on their phones between jobs, take quizzes and open Practical NDT whenever they want practice. For freshers, it is often the first time they see what a real scan looks like.
Operations and site managers
They check training alongside certification and availability before sending a crew to a refinery shutdown or a boiler job.
Training wing managers
They run outside courses, manage course sales and learner accounts, and keep paying learners separate from staff.
Connecting training to the rest of the ERP
- Certificates records ISO 9712-based certifications, including ISNT's, alongside SNT-TC-1A and others, with level, method, expiry and vision tests. Certificates expiring within 90 days are flagged with warning tasks.
- Team Assignments treats training as an availability status, so nobody is sent to site on a course day.
- Surveys run competency questionnaires and feedback.
How completions relate to training hours on the technician record is agreed during implementation. You can adopt eLearning alone or as part of the full Atlantis NDT ERP. Cost is quote on request; affordable, accessible, fully customizable. Request a quote for your Indian team.
Fabrication shops, export work and Gulf deployments
India's fabrication clusters, around Vadodara, Hazira, Pune, Chennai, Coimbatore and the Mumbai belt, build pressure vessels, heat exchangers, columns, piping spools and structural steel for domestic and export markets. Export orders often mean ASME code work with an authorized inspector, or fabrication to European standards with a notified body or third-party inspection agency reviewing records. Many of these shops certify their NDT staff under an ASNT SNT-TC-1A written practice because their overseas clients expect it.
Under SNT-TC-1A, the written practice sets out the organised training a technician must complete, and the employer must be able to show it. That is where the eLearning portal earns its keep in a fabrication shop: a clear record, per technician, of which courses were completed, with quiz results and completion certificates, next to their certifications in the Certificates app.
India is also one of the biggest sources of NDT technicians for the Gulf. Companies that deploy crews to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman, directly or through manpower arrangements, need those technicians ready for client practical demonstrations and site rules on arrival. Useful courses before deployment include:
- Method refreshers built around the procedures the crew will use abroad.
- Reporting courses for the client's documentation style.
- Practical NDT sessions on UT, PAUT, RT and MT scenarios, so technicians arrive with their setup and scanning routine fresh.
Atlantis's own training is based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A, which fits this export-facing and Gulf-facing work. Whether any Atlantis course content becomes part of your portal is agreed as part of your implementation scope.
Keeping trainer knowledge when people move on
Indian NDT companies lose experienced people constantly. Senior Level II technicians and Level IIIs are recruited by Gulf contractors, larger EPCs and overseas inspection companies, often at short notice. When they go, years of practical know-how can go with them: how to set up on a difficult nozzle weld, which indications a particular client worries about, how your reports should read.
The eLearning portal gives you a way to hold on to some of that. While your senior people are still with you, record them. A short video on a tricky technique, a walkthrough of a client's procedure, a talk on common reporting mistakes. Store the videos in OneDrive or SharePoint, where download protection applies when they play in the portal, and turn them into lessons in the right Level I, II or III section.
Question banks are the other asset worth protecting. Many Indian Level IIIs keep their questions in Word files on a personal laptop. Importing those into portal quizzes keeps them in the company, where the next trainer can review and extend them rather than starting again.
A practical approach many companies take:
- Pick the methods and clients where you depend most on one or two people.
- Schedule short recording sessions with them, a few minutes per topic.
- Import their question banks and have a second reviewer check them.
- Assign the resulting courses to juniors, with Practical NDT scenarios for practice.
Nothing replaces an experienced trainer standing next to a trainee on real work. But a library built from your own people's experience means a resignation letter no longer resets your training programme to zero.

Built for any business that runs on operations
Most companies do not fail at their craft. They lose time, margin and goodwill in the gaps between the tools they use to run the place — a quoting spreadsheet that does not talk to the job sheet, a job sheet that does not reach accounts, and a compliance folder nobody can search when a client asks. Atlantis closes those gaps by putting the whole operation on one platform, so information is entered once and everything downstream stays in step.
What you can run on it
- Sales and CRM — leads, quotes, follow-ups and the pipeline that tells you what next month looks like.
- Projects and job costing — plan the work, track the hours and materials against it, and see the margin while the job is still live rather than at final account.
- Field and service teams — dispatch, schedules, mobile capture that works with no signal, and sign-off from site.
- Inventory and purchasing — stock, suppliers, reorder points and goods receipt, joined to the jobs that consume them.
- People — records, qualifications and licences with renewal reminders, timesheets, leave and payroll.
- Quality and documents — procedures and forms under revision control, with the audit trail an inspection or accreditation body actually asks for.
- Accounts — invoicing, expenses, multi-currency and the reporting your accountant stops chasing you for.
Affordable, accessible, fully customizable — and we mean each word
Affordable because the whole suite is included rather than sold to you a module at a time, and because implementation is done by people who have run operations rather than by a chain of subcontractors. Accessible because it runs in a browser and on a phone, works for a small team on day one, and does not need a specialist on staff to keep it alive. Fully customizable because your process is the thing that makes you competitive — the software should bend to it, not the other way round.
Industries we configure for
Service businesses and contractors, manufacturing and fabrication, trading and distribution, laboratories and testing houses, engineering consultancies, construction and facilities, and asset owners across energy, marine, aerospace and infrastructure. Inspection and testing is where we started, and it remains the sector we go deepest in — but the platform underneath is general-purpose, and most of what it does has nothing to do with inspection at all.
What happens when you get in touch
A short conversation, not a sales sequence. We ask how the business runs today and where it hurts, show you the platform doing that work, and send a written quote shaped to your region, your team size and the scope you actually need. No obligation, nothing to install first, and no pressure to decide on the call. Reach out and tell us what you are trying to fix.
