Why NDT companies need their own learning portal
Most NDT companies already train their people. The problem is where that training lives. Lesson slides sit on a Level III's laptop. Quiz papers are photocopied and marked by hand. The proof that a technician finished a refresher is an email somewhere, or a signature on a sheet that went into a box file. Then an auditor, a client or your own written practice asks you to show it, and someone loses two days rebuilding a training history from scraps.
Field schedules make it worse. Technicians rotate between sites, shutdowns and night shifts. Classroom sessions get cancelled because half the crew is mobilised. New hires wait weeks for a trainer to be free. Refreshers slip, and nobody notices until a certificate is about to lapse.
The eLearning app in Atlantis NDT ERP puts that training in one place. Courses, videos, quizzes, learner accounts and completion records sit inside the same system you use for jobs, technicians, certificates and invoices. A technician can watch a lesson from a hotel room the night before mobilisation. Your Level III can see who has finished what without chasing anyone. And because the portal opens straight into Practical NDT, Atlantis's 3D practice platform, learners can move from theory to hands-on scanning practice without waiting for a free slot on a real calibration block.
This page explains what the app does, how a course runs day to day, who uses it, how it connects to the rest of the ERP and what setting it up looks like.
What the eLearning app does
The app is a course portal set up for NDT training rather than generic corporate learning. As configured by Atlantis, it gives you:
- Level I, Level II and Level III sections. Courses are grouped by level, so a trainee sees what applies to them and a Level II candidate isn't wading through Level III procedure-writing material.
- Video lessons from OneDrive or SharePoint. Your existing training videos stay in your Microsoft storage and play inside the portal, with download protection so a lesson isn't simply saved and passed around.
- Quizzes, including questions imported from Word files. If your Level III already keeps question banks in Word documents, they can be imported rather than typed in again.
- Certificates of completion. Learners who complete a course receive a completion certificate generated by the system.
- Admin-controlled learner accounts. Admins create learner accounts and grant or revoke course access. When someone leaves the company, their access goes with them.
- A learner dashboard. Each learner sees their courses, their progress and what's left to finish.
- Auto-join for invited members. Invite a technician to a course and they are enrolled when they accept, with no separate sign-up step to get wrong.
- Online course sales. If you train outside candidates as well as your own staff, courses can be sold through the portal.
- A Practical NDT section. Enrolled learners get a link into Practical NDT, the 3D practice platform described below.
Everything else, such as how your courses are structured, what your completion rules are and how records flow into technician files, is set up with you during implementation.
Practical NDT: hands-on 3D practice inside the portal
Reading about skip distance is not the same as finding a lack of fusion. That gap between theory and hands-on skill is where most NDT training struggles, because practice time needs instruments, probes, reference blocks, flawed specimens and a trainer, and all of those are usually busy on paying work.
Practical NDT is Atlantis's immersive 3D, game-like NDT practice platform. Learners work through scenarios for UT, PAUT, RT, MT, PT, VT, ET and TOFD on virtual welds, pipes, pressure vessels and castings. They set up, scan, look for indications and make calls on what they've found, in a space where a mistake costs nothing and the specimen is always available.
Inside the eLearning portal, every enrolled learner gets a Practical NDT section that opens the platform. Access is granted automatically when the learner is enrolled, or an admin can grant it manually, for example to a supervisor who isn't taking a course but wants to try the scenarios. There's no separate account list to maintain in a second system.
How you use it depends on your training programme. Some companies pair each Level I video module with a matching Practical NDT scenario. Others use it as a warm-up before a practical exam on real specimens, or as a refresher for technicians coming back to a method they haven't used for months. It does not replace the hands-on practical examination your written practice requires on real parts. It gives learners far more practice time before they get there.

How a course runs day to day
Here is a typical flow for a new Level I trainee in ultrasonic testing.
- Account and invitation. An admin creates the learner account and invites the trainee to the UT Level I course. The trainee accepts and is enrolled automatically.
- Practical NDT access. On enrolment the trainee's Practical NDT access is switched on, so the practice section appears for them.
- Lessons. The trainee works through video lessons at their own pace, from the office, the workshop or a site cabin with a decent connection.
- Quizzes. Each module ends with a quiz drawn from your own question bank. Results show where a learner is weak before it matters on a job.
- Practice. Between modules, the trainee runs UT scenarios in Practical NDT on virtual welds and plate.
- Completion. When the course is done, the system issues a certificate of completion.
- Oversight. The Level III or training coordinator checks progress in the backend rather than asking around.
Refreshers work the same way, just shorter. When a procedure changes, or a technician returns to a method after a long gap, assign a short course, let them complete it between jobs and keep the completion record.
What the portal doesn't do is certify anyone. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, your company's written practice defines training, experience, examinations and certification, and your Level III remains responsible for it. The portal gives you a clean, provable record of the classroom part of the journey and the practice around it.
Building courses from material you already have
Most NDT companies don't need to create a training library from nothing. They already have one, scattered: recorded toolbox talks, method videos made by a senior technician, slide decks, question banks typed up years ago for the last audit. The eLearning app is set up to use that material rather than make you start over.
Videos stay in OneDrive or SharePoint
If your videos already sit in Microsoft 365, they stay there. The portal plays them from OneDrive or SharePoint inside the lesson, with download protection turned on. You don't have to re-upload large files to a new platform, and your document control stays where it is.
Quiz questions imported from Word
Question banks written in Word can be imported into quizzes. That matters in NDT because a single method at a single level can mean a long list of general and specific questions, and nobody wants to paste them in one at a time. After import, your Level III reviews and adjusts them in the portal.
Structure by level and method
Courses sit in Level I, II and III sections. Within those, a common structure is one course per method per level, plus short cross-method courses such as radiation safety awareness, how to read a procedure or reporting basics. The exact structure is agreed with you.
Atlantis course content
If you'd rather not build everything yourself, Atlantis runs NDT training based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A. Where it fits your programme, that content can be discussed as part of your implementation scope.
Training records and the rest of the ERP
A learning portal on its own is just another silo. The value of running it inside Atlantis NDT ERP is that the training record sits next to everything else you know about the technician.
The Certificates app holds each technician's certifications: scheme, level, method, issue and expiry dates, OJT hours, training hours, exam results and vision tests. It marks certificates as expiring soon 90 days before expiry and creates warning tasks. When that warning appears, the refresher or re-training can be assigned in eLearning straight away, in the same system.
How course completions relate to a technician's training hours in Certificates is agreed during implementation. Some companies want a completion recorded against the technician file; others want the Level III to confirm hours by hand before anything counts. Both are handled as part of the customization scope agreed with you.
Other connections worth knowing about:
- Employees. The learner is the same person as the technician record, with their NDT profile, highest level and methods certified.
- Surveys. Standard Surveys can run competency questionnaires or course feedback forms alongside the portal.
- Team Assignments. The technician availability calendar has a training status, so a technician booked for a training day isn't dispatched to site by mistake.
The result: when a client asks for a technician's training evidence, the certification, the completion record and the job history are in one place, not three.
Who uses the eLearning portal
NDT Level III and training coordinators
They own course content, question banks and completion rules. They see who has finished, who is stuck on a quiz and who hasn't logged in. They use the portal to deliver the organised training their written practice calls for and to keep evidence ready for audits.
Technicians and trainees
They log in, see their courses on the dashboard, watch lessons, take quizzes and open Practical NDT to practise. No paper, and no waiting for the next classroom slot.
QA/QC and operations managers
They care that the right people are trained before they go to site. Seeing training status next to certificate status and availability makes that check quick.
HR and admin staff
They create learner accounts and revoke access when someone leaves. Because access is admin-controlled, a former employee doesn't walk away with your course library.
Owners
They want training to stop being a hidden cost that's hard to prove. A portal with records, plus the option to sell courses to outside learners, makes it visible.
External learners
If you sell courses, outside candidates buy and take them through the same portal, with their own dashboard, without seeing anything else in your ERP.
Selling courses to outside learners
Plenty of NDT service companies already train outsiders informally: a client's QC staff, fresh graduates hoping to join the industry, technicians from a partner company. The eLearning app supports online course sales, so that training can be offered through the portal instead of being arranged over email and chased for payment.
You decide which courses are for sale and which are internal only. An internal UT Level II refresher built around your own procedures probably stays private. A general introduction to NDT methods, a Level I theory course or a radiation safety awareness module might be worth offering publicly.
Sales run through the standard sales and accounting side of the ERP, so orders and invoices land in the same books as the rest of your business. Taxes are set up for your country during implementation.
Pairing a course with Practical NDT access can make a strong offer, because most outside learners have no access to equipment at all. For them, a 3D scenario on a virtual weld is often the first time they see what a real scan looks like.
One caution: be clear in course descriptions about what a learner is getting. A course completion certificate is not NDT certification. Certification is issued by an employer under its written practice, or by a certification body under a central scheme. Honest descriptions protect your reputation and the learner.
What implementation looks like
Atlantis sets up the eLearning app as part of Atlantis NDT ERP, the same way it sets up the other apps. A typical rollout runs like this:
- Discovery call. We look at your written practice, your current training material, who needs training and whether you want to sell courses.
- Structure. We agree the Level I, II and III sections, the course list and naming, so the portal matches how your Level III thinks about training.
- Content connection. We connect your OneDrive or SharePoint video library and import quiz questions from your Word files.
- Accounts and access. We set up admin roles, create the first learner accounts and set the Practical NDT access rule: automatic on enrolment, manual, or both.
- Links to the ERP. We agree how training relates to Certificates, Employees and availability, and configure it.
- Pilot. One course, a handful of learners, real feedback, then adjustments.
- Handover. Your admins learn to add courses, invite learners and manage access themselves.
You can start with eLearning alone or as part of the full Atlantis NDT ERP. Cost is quote on request and depends on the scope you choose. The aim is simple: affordable, accessible and fully customizable, configured around the way your company already trains.

Frequently asked questions
Is the eLearning app an LMS for NDT training?
Yes. It is a learning management system inside Atlantis NDT ERP, set up for NDT: Level I, II and III sections, video lessons, quizzes, completion certificates, admin-controlled learner accounts and a link into the Practical NDT 3D practice platform.
Does completing a course certify a technician?
No. A certificate of completion shows a course was finished. Certification under ASNT SNT-TC-1A is the employer's decision under its written practice, based on training, experience and examinations, with Level III oversight.
Can we use our own videos and question banks?
Yes. Videos play from OneDrive or SharePoint with download protection, and quiz questions can be imported from Word files, then reviewed by your Level III.
How do learners get into Practical NDT?
Through the Practical NDT section in the portal. Access is granted automatically when a learner is enrolled, or manually by an admin.
Can we remove access when a technician leaves?
Yes. Admins create learner accounts and grant or revoke access, so a leaver's access can be removed on their last day.
Does Atlantis provide training content?
Atlantis offers NDT training based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A. Whether any of it becomes part of your portal is agreed in your implementation scope.
What does it cost?
It's quote on request. Scope drives it: eLearning alone or with the wider ERP, the number of courses to set up and the customization you need.
See eLearning and Practical NDT working together
If training at your company still lives on laptops, in box files and in inboxes, the fix doesn't have to be a big project. Built for any business that runs on operations
Most companies do not fail at their craft. They lose time, margin and goodwill in the gaps between the tools they use to run the place — a quoting spreadsheet that does not talk to the job sheet, a job sheet that does not reach accounts, and a compliance folder nobody can search when a client asks. Atlantis closes those gaps by putting the whole operation on one platform, so information is entered once and everything downstream stays in step.
What you can run on it
- Sales and CRM — leads, quotes, follow-ups and the pipeline that tells you what next month looks like.
- Projects and job costing — plan the work, track the hours and materials against it, and see the margin while the job is still live rather than at final account.
- Field and service teams — dispatch, schedules, mobile capture that works with no signal, and sign-off from site.
- Inventory and purchasing — stock, suppliers, reorder points and goods receipt, joined to the jobs that consume them.
- People — records, qualifications and licences with renewal reminders, timesheets, leave and payroll.
- Quality and documents — procedures and forms under revision control, with the audit trail an inspection or accreditation body actually asks for.
- Accounts — invoicing, expenses, multi-currency and the reporting your accountant stops chasing you for.
Affordable, accessible, fully customizable — and we mean each word
Affordable because the whole suite is included rather than sold to you a module at a time, and because implementation is done by people who have run operations rather than by a chain of subcontractors. Accessible because it runs in a browser and on a phone, works for a small team on day one, and does not need a specialist on staff to keep it alive. Fully customizable because your process is the thing that makes you competitive — the software should bend to it, not the other way round.
Industries we configure for
Service businesses and contractors, manufacturing and fabrication, trading and distribution, laboratories and testing houses, engineering consultancies, construction and facilities, and asset owners across energy, marine, aerospace and infrastructure. Inspection and testing is where we started, and it remains the sector we go deepest in — but the platform underneath is general-purpose, and most of what it does has nothing to do with inspection at all.
What happens when you get in touch
A short conversation, not a sales sequence. We ask how the business runs today and where it hurts, show you the platform doing that work, and send a written quote shaped to your region, your team size and the scope you actually need. No obligation, nothing to install first, and no pressure to decide on the call. Reach out and tell us what you are trying to fix.
