Where company training fits in Canada's certification system
Canada certifies most NDT technicians centrally. The CGSB scheme, run by the NDT Certification Body at Natural Resources Canada under CAN/CGSB-48.9712, which is based on ISO 9712, means technicians sit exams set by a third party rather than by their employer. That's different from the US employer-based model, and it changes what your company's training is for.
A Canadian NDT company still carries a lot of training responsibility. New hires need grounding before they sit anything. Certified technicians need to learn your procedures, your clients' specifications and your reporting standards. Radiography crews need company radiation safety instruction. Client sites in the oil sands or at nuclear stations add their own orientation requirements. And plenty of Canadian companies also hold ASNT SNT-TC-1A written practices for US client work, cross-border projects or sectors where employer-based certification is expected.
The eLearning app in Atlantis NDT ERP is built for that internal training. It is not a route to CGSB certification, and Atlantis doesn't present it as one. Atlantis's own training courses follow ASNT SNT-TC-1A only. What the portal does is give your company one place to deliver and record the training that sits around certification: onboarding, procedures, client requirements, safety and refreshers.
Because the portal lives inside the ERP, those records sit next to each technician's certificates, availability and job history, which is where your QA manager and your clients' auditors expect to find them.
What the eLearning app includes
As configured by Atlantis for NDT companies, the portal includes:
- Level I, II and III sections, so material is grouped by the level a learner works at.
- Video lessons streamed from OneDrive or SharePoint with download protection, so your videos stay in your Microsoft 365 storage.
- Quizzes, with questions importable from Word files.
- Certificates of completion for finished courses.
- Learner accounts created by admins, with access granted and revoked by admins.
- A learner dashboard for each person's courses and progress.
- Auto-join for invited members.
- Online course sales, if you train outside candidates.
- A Practical NDT section opening Atlantis's 3D practice platform.
Where you need something beyond this list, such as a particular reporting view for a client audit, it is handled as configuration during implementation and agreed with you up front. No surprises about what's built in and what isn't.
Practical NDT for camps, rotations and long winters
A lot of Canadian NDT work happens far from a training room. Crews fly in and out of oil sands sites north of Fort McMurray, work long rotations at upgraders and plants, or travel between pipeline spreads in remote country. Hands-on practice on real equipment is hard to schedule when the equipment and the Level III are both hundreds of kilometres away.
Practical NDT is Atlantis's immersive 3D, game-like NDT practice platform. Learners work through UT, PAUT, RT, MT, PT, VT, ET and TOFD scenarios on virtual welds, pipes, pressure vessels and castings. They set up, scan, find indications and decide what they mean, on a laptop in a camp room if that's where they are.
Every learner enrolled in the eLearning portal gets a Practical NDT section. Access is switched on automatically at enrolment, or an admin can grant it manually.
Canadian companies tend to use it in three ways:
- Between rotations. Technicians keep a method fresh during time off-site without needing access to your shop.
- Before exams. Trainees build familiarity with scanning and interpretation before practical sessions on real specimens. Practice on a platform doesn't count as the documented experience a certification scheme requires; it simply prepares people to make better use of real time.
- Cross-training. UT technicians exploring PAUT and TOFD, or MT technicians moving into ET, get a feel for setups before formal training.

Radiography crews: CNSC and moving sources
Industrial radiography in Canada is licensed by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. People who operate exposure devices must be CNSC-certified exposure device operators, and trainees work under direct supervision while they gain experience. Your company's licence comes with a radiation protection programme, and your radiation safety officer is responsible for training people in the licensee's procedures and keeping records the CNSC can inspect.
Moving sources adds another layer. Transport of Dangerous Goods rules require that people handling or transporting Class 7 radioactive material are trained and hold a training certificate from their employer, with periodic retraining.
The eLearning portal doesn't replace EDO certification, your licence or TDG compliance. It gives your RSO a practical way to deliver company-specific content and prove who completed it. Typical courses:
- Your operating and emergency procedures, recorded as short video lessons with a quiz.
- Radiation safety awareness for assistants, helpers and non-radiography staff who work near controlled areas.
- Refresher content your RSO assigns on a schedule, with completion per person.
- Source transport briefings for vehicle crews, alongside the Fleet app's record of which vehicles can carry radioactive sources and their transport licence expiry.
The Certificates app's employee NDT profile holds radiation safety training, radiation badge number and medical fitness expiry. Practical NDT's RT scenarios let trainees practise technique selection and image interpretation without anyone receiving a dose.
Alberta oil sands, upgraders and ABSA-regulated work
Alberta is the centre of Canadian NDT demand: oil sands mining and in-situ operations, upgraders, refineries and petrochemical plants around Edmonton's Industrial Heartland, and the pipelines that connect them. Pressure equipment in the province falls under ABSA, the pressure equipment safety authority, and owners run inspection programmes under their ABSA-accepted quality management systems. Fabrication follows CSA B51 alongside ASME codes, structural work often references CSA W59, and pipelines are built and maintained to CSA Z662.
For an NDT company, each of those clients and codes brings specific expectations: which procedures apply, what acceptance criteria look like, how reports are laid out and what site orientations technicians must complete. That's the training that fills a Canadian Level III's week, and it's a strong fit for the portal.
- Client procedure courses. A short course per major client or contract, covering their procedures and your approved techniques, with a quiz written by your Level III.
- Code awareness courses. Introductions to the relevant sections of CSA Z662 or CSA W59 for technicians moving between pipeline and structural work. Your Level III decides the content; the portal delivers it.
- Turnaround onboarding. Spring and fall shutdowns bring extra hands. Invite the whole crew to the onboarding course, and auto-join enrols them as they accept.
When the turnaround ends, admins revoke access for temporary staff, so your course library doesn't travel with them.
Ontario nuclear and specialised inspection
Ontario's nuclear sector is a different world. Refurbishment programmes at Darlington and Bruce, and routine outages across the fleet, involve demanding inspection work, much of it eddy current and ultrasonic testing of components under CSA N285.4 periodic inspection requirements. Nuclear operators impose extensive site training, security screening and procedure qualification on every contractor, and they expect records to be exact.
Most of that site-specific training is delivered by the operator. But the NDT company still has to prepare its people: company procedures for nuclear work, quality expectations, human performance tools, reporting discipline and the method knowledge behind specialised techniques.
The portal gives you a structured place for that preparation, with a clear record of who completed what before mobilisation. Practical NDT's ET and UT scenarios offer early familiarity with the methods, though qualification for nuclear inspection is always done on the operator's terms, on real equipment and mock-ups.
Nuclear work also rewards clean access control. Admins create every learner account and grant or revoke access, which keeps sensitive procedure material limited to the people who should see it.
English, French and personal data
Canadian NDT companies often run crews in both official languages, especially those working in Quebec or with crews from Quebec working in Alberta. The portal doesn't translate content automatically, but it handles bilingual training simply: build a French version of a course alongside the English one and invite each technician to the right version. Quiz questions imported from Word work the same way in either language.
Technician training records are personal information. Federal privacy law under PIPEDA, and provincial laws in Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec, shape how you collect and keep that information. The eLearning app gives you practical controls: admin-created accounts, admin-controlled access, and revocation when a person leaves. Decisions about hosting, retention and who in your company can see what are made with you during implementation. Atlantis does not claim the software makes you compliant with any privacy law; your policies do that, and the configuration supports them.
Connecting training to certificates and dispatch
The eLearning app earns its place when it's joined to the rest of Atlantis NDT ERP.
- Certificates records each technician's certifications, including CGSB (ISO 9712), SNT-TC-1A and others, with level, method, certifying body, issue and expiry dates, OJT and training hours, and vision tests. Certificates expiring within 90 days are flagged with warning tasks, which is your prompt to assign refresher training.
- Team Assignments uses an availability calendar with a training status, so nobody dispatches a technician to a site in Fort McMurray on the day they're booked for a course.
- Timesheets warn when a technician's certificate isn't valid.
- Surveys handle competency questionnaires and course feedback.
How course completions relate to training hours on a technician's record is agreed during implementation.
Who uses the portal in a Canadian NDT company
Level III and QA managers
They write or approve course content, set quiz pass marks, decide which courses each crew needs for each client, and use completion records when an owner's quality management system audit or a nuclear operator's contractor review comes around.
Radiation safety officers
They assign radiation safety and source transport content, check that every operator, assistant and driver has completed it, and keep that evidence ready for a CNSC inspection.
Technicians and trainees
They see their courses on the dashboard, study between rotations, take quizzes and open Practical NDT when they want practice. A trainee waiting to sit a CGSB exam can keep building familiarity with a method in the meantime, even though the portal itself isn't exam preparation.
Operations and dispatch
They see training alongside certification status and availability, so a technician isn't sent to an oil sands site or a nuclear outage without the client's required course completed.
HR and admin
They create learner accounts for new hires and turnaround staff, and revoke access when people leave or a contract ends. That keeps client procedures and company material inside the company.
Implementation
Atlantis sets up eLearning as part of Atlantis NDT ERP or on its own. We start with your training material, certification mix and client requirements, then agree course structure, connect your OneDrive or SharePoint videos, import Word question banks, set admin roles and Practical NDT access, and pilot with one crew before handing over. Cost is quote on request; the product is affordable, accessible and fully customizable. Request a quote for your Canadian team.

Built for any business that runs on operations
Most companies do not fail at their craft. They lose time, margin and goodwill in the gaps between the tools they use to run the place — a quoting spreadsheet that does not talk to the job sheet, a job sheet that does not reach accounts, and a compliance folder nobody can search when a client asks. Atlantis closes those gaps by putting the whole operation on one platform, so information is entered once and everything downstream stays in step.
What you can run on it
- Sales and CRM — leads, quotes, follow-ups and the pipeline that tells you what next month looks like.
- Projects and job costing — plan the work, track the hours and materials against it, and see the margin while the job is still live rather than at final account.
- Field and service teams — dispatch, schedules, mobile capture that works with no signal, and sign-off from site.
- Inventory and purchasing — stock, suppliers, reorder points and goods receipt, joined to the jobs that consume them.
- People — records, qualifications and licences with renewal reminders, timesheets, leave and payroll.
- Quality and documents — procedures and forms under revision control, with the audit trail an inspection or accreditation body actually asks for.
- Accounts — invoicing, expenses, multi-currency and the reporting your accountant stops chasing you for.
Affordable, accessible, fully customizable — and we mean each word
Affordable because the whole suite is included rather than sold to you a module at a time, and because implementation is done by people who have run operations rather than by a chain of subcontractors. Accessible because it runs in a browser and on a phone, works for a small team on day one, and does not need a specialist on staff to keep it alive. Fully customizable because your process is the thing that makes you competitive — the software should bend to it, not the other way round.
Industries we configure for
Service businesses and contractors, manufacturing and fabrication, trading and distribution, laboratories and testing houses, engineering consultancies, construction and facilities, and asset owners across energy, marine, aerospace and infrastructure. Inspection and testing is where we started, and it remains the sector we go deepest in — but the platform underneath is general-purpose, and most of what it does has nothing to do with inspection at all.
What happens when you get in touch
A short conversation, not a sales sequence. We ask how the business runs today and where it hurts, show you the platform doing that work, and send a written quote shaped to your region, your team size and the scope you actually need. No obligation, nothing to install first, and no pressure to decide on the call. Reach out and tell us what you are trying to fix.
