Galveston is an island port with the refining belt ten miles across the causeway. An NDT ERP serving this market has to carry the evidence those operators audit against — API 510 / 570 / 653, OSHA PSM (29 CFR 1910.119), ABS Rules for Steel Vessels and USCG Subchapter M, API RP 2X and AWS D1.
Marathon's Galveston Bay refinery at Texas City is the second-largest in Texas and third-largest in the country, and the Port of Texas City moves over 78 million tons a year, eighth-busiest in the US. On the island itself, Gulf Copper's Todd Road yard does ship repair, fabrication and new construction, including Coast Guard Arctic Security Cutters. Pelican Island holds Texas A&M Maritime Academy, the only US maritime academy on the Gulf, training licensed deck and engineering officers aboard the TS Kennedy. Galveston is also North America's fourth-busiest cruise homeport. Operators including Marathon Galveston Bay Refinery (Texas City), Gulf Copper & Manufacturing, Galveston yard, Port of Galveston set the pre-qualification bar their contractors inherit. The system of record for that evidence is the ERP, not a spreadsheet a technician maintains between jobs.

| Factor | What applies | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Sectors served | Port, cruise and breakbulk terminals, Ship repair and shipbuilding, Petroleum refining and petrochemicals, Offshore energy support, Maritime education and licensing | Sets which methods, report formats and codes the system must handle |
| Codes audited against | API 510 / 570 / 653, OSHA PSM (29 CFR 1910.119), ABS Rules for Steel Vessels and USCG Subchapter M, API RP 2X and AWS D1.1 (offshore structural welds), 30 CFR 250 (BSEE offshore operations), NBIC NB-23 and Texas Boiler Law (TDLR) | Each demands retrievable evidence, not a claim of compliance |
| What must be retrievable on demand | Technician certification currency · equipment calibration status · the report against the asset that generated it | These three are what an auditor asks for first |
| Deployment | Cloud or on-premise · configured to the codes above · offline field capture | Field crews lose connectivity; the record cannot depend on it |
What must an NDT ERP track for inspection firms in Galveston?
Evidence against API 510 / 570 / 653, OSHA PSM (29 CFR 1910.119), ABS Rules for Steel Vessels and USCG Subchapter M, API RP 2X and AWS D1.1 (offshore structural welds), 30 CFR 250 (BSEE offshore operations). That means each technician's certification currency by method and level, each instrument's calibration status on the day it was used, and every inspection report bound to the asset and the job that produced it. An auditor asks for those three before anything else.
Can an inspection company in Galveston run this alongside its existing accounting?
Yes. The ERP owns operations — jobs, technicians, equipment, reports — and pushes finished invoices to the accounting system, which keeps the chart of accounts, tax and reconciliation. For US firms that usually means QuickBooks; the split is documented in the QuickBooks integration guide rather than forcing a migration nobody asked for.
Does it work offline for field crews in Galveston?
Yes. Field capture runs offline and syncs when the device reconnects, because turnaround decks, tank interiors and remote sites have no usable signal and a record that depends on connectivity is a record that gets rewritten from memory hours later. Offline capture is the difference between a contemporaneous record and a reconstruction.
How long does implementation take for a firm in Galveston?
The configuration follows the codes and workflows above rather than a fixed template, so the timeline is set by how much existing data has to be migrated and cleaned — certification records and calibration history are the two that consume the time. Firms usually run the first job cycle in parallel before cutting over.
What happens to inspection records if a technician leaves?
They stay with the asset and the job, which is the point. Employer-based certification ends when the holder leaves, but the reports they signed remain part of the asset's inspection history and are still auditable. A system that stores records per technician rather than per asset loses that history on every departure.

NDT ERP for Galveston: marine and refinery work from one system
An NDT ERP for Galveston has to handle two different kinds of client in the same week: marine work on the island, where reports go to a classification society surveyor, and refinery and petrochemical work across the causeway in Texas City, where reports go to an owner's inspection department. The Atlantis ERP solution handles both, including a marine report mode built for class-society paperwork.
Galveston's working waterfront has changed quickly. Davie Defense completed its purchase of Gulf Copper's Galveston and Port Arthur shipbuilding assets at the end of 2025 and has announced large-scale plans for icebreaker construction on the island. The Port of Galveston has added cruise terminal capacity, with a fourth terminal built to homeport MSC and Norwegian ships, and it has published plans to develop port-owned land on Pelican Island. Ten miles away, Texas City's refineries and chemical plants keep a steady turnaround and routine-inspection load. For an inspection company based on the island or in the mainland suburbs, that means shipbuilding and ship-repair weld inspection, port and terminal structural work and refinery work, all needing different report formats and evidence.
The Atlantis ERP is a fully customized ERP for NDT and inspection companies, set up and supported by Atlantis NDT (founder Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III). It is affordable, accessible and fully customizable. To see marine mode with your own vessel paperwork, book a Galveston demo.
What is the best NDT reporting software for shipyard and ship-repair work?
The best NDT reporting software for shipyard work produces a report package a class surveyor accepts on first review: the inspection report, the vessel details, photos, the inspector's qualification and the instrument calibration certificate, all together. The Atlantis ERP's marine mode assembles that package automatically.
In marine mode, the report gets a vessel cover page with a photo, the inspection location and dates. When the PDF is generated, the ERP merges in the classification-society certificate from its library (DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, BV, RINA, IRS and ClassNK), the inspector's Level II certificate and the calibration certificate for the instrument used. Inspection photos are laid out in a two-up grid. That removes the most common delay in ship-repair work: the surveyor asking for the technician's certificate or the gauge's calibration certificate after the report has already been sent.
Underneath, the reports are the standard method reports. UT thickness readings on hull plating and tank structure are recorded by direction. Weld inspection on new construction or repair uses VT, MT, UT, PAUT or RT, with weld and job lines recording defect type and orientation. RT reports record source, technique, IQI type and placement, and PAUT reports record focal laws. Holiday and coating reports cover coating inspection, and every report ends with acceptable, not acceptable or acceptable with remarks, with inspector, reviewer and approver signatures and a place for the surveyor's or third-party inspector's name and signature. See NDT reports.
Refinery and petrochemical work across the causeway
The same system handles refinery and chemical-plant work in Texas City and along the bay. The Atlantis ERP supports 17 report types with their own numbering: UT, RT, MT, PT, VT, ECT, IRIS, PAUT, MFL, TOFD, PWHT, PMI, hardness, UT thickness, ferrite, holiday and coating, and computed radiography. That covers exchanger tube inspection with ECT and IRIS, tank floor work with MFL, weld examination with TOFD and PAUT, and PMI, hardness and PWHT records on repairs.
Refinery clients typically want the report to carry their own references. Each report records work order, request, WPS, contract, drawing numbers and procedure and standard references, and the owner's inspector or authorised inspector can be named and sign. Company templates are versioned in Excel, Word, PDF or HTML with your logo, header and footer. If a refinery insists on its own Excel thickness data sheet, the ERP fills it automatically by mapping fields to cells.
A point worth being clear about: the Atlantis ERP is your company's system, not the owner's asset-integrity system. Engineering assessment of the data stays with the owner and its own tools. What the ERP does is get your data to the owner quickly, in the format they want, and, where they allow it, through the open REST API into their own system. If you also need API inspection services, Atlantis NDT provides them separately; see inspection services.
Technician certification tracking software for crews that switch between yard and plant
Technician certification tracking in the Atlantis ERP records each certificate by scheme, level, method, certifying body, sector and dates, and computes its status as active, expiring soon (within 90 days), expired or revoked. Supported schemes include SNT-TC-1A, CP-189, ISO 9712, PCN, CSWIP and others.
Marine and refinery clients often ask for different things. A class surveyor wants to see the Level II certificate on the report itself, which marine mode handles. A refinery's contractor-management system wants the full certificate record, vision test and sometimes training hours before site access. Keeping OJT hours, training hours, exam results and attachments on each certificate means the office can answer both without chasing technicians for scans.
Vision tests record Jaeger J1/J2 near vision, far vision, colour perception and contrast, with examiner, clinic, certificate file and expiry. Examination sheets hold general, specific and practical scores against a passing score (70 percent by default). Certificate templates per scheme set validity in months, whether a vision test and exam are required, and minimum OJT and training hours. The employee NDT profile shows the highest level, methods certified, radiation safety training, radiation badge number and medical fitness expiry.
Warning tasks are created 90 days before a certificate or vision test expires. Daily email alerts for technician certificates, calibration certificates and company certifications go to the recipients you choose, with your own look-ahead days and resend interval. Timesheets warn when a technician's certificate is not valid. See certificates.
Calibration management software in a salt-air environment
Calibration management in the Atlantis ERP keeps a full calibration record for every instrument and a register of calibration certificates with lab accreditation, PDF, status and expiry alerts. On an island, where salt air and wet decks are hard on electronics, that record needs a maintenance history beside it.
Each calibration record captures provider, certificate number, standard, range, uncertainty, accredited-lab flag, pass, fail or conditional result and next due date. The maintenance log records preventive and corrective work, repairs, cleaning, firmware updates and probe replacement, with condition before and after. Every item is tracked by serial number with type, assigned person, condition, asset tag, firmware, accessories and lifecycle status (new, active, in calibration, in repair, rented out, retired or disposed), and calibration frequency and status.
Issue and return runs through supervisor and manager approval with condition recorded both ways. Reservations stop two crews claiming the same thickness gauge, and the team assignment screen warns when equipment assigned to a job is out of calibration. In marine mode, the calibration certificate of the instrument used is merged into the report PDF automatically, so the calibration register directly feeds what the surveyor sees. Consumables such as couplant, MT particles, penetrant and PPE are tracked with reorder levels and a low-stock flag. See asset management.
Crew dispatch and scheduling software when weather decides the calendar
Crew dispatch in the Atlantis ERP runs jobs through planned, dispatched, in field, submitted and closed, blocks double-booking of technicians and equipment, and records site GPS coordinates and mobilisation and demobilisation dates. On the Gulf Coast, the schedule is regularly rewritten by weather, and the dispatcher needs to move crews quickly without losing track of certificates and equipment.
Hurricane season, fog that closes the channel and wind that stops work at height all push jobs around. When a vessel's arrival slips by two days, the dispatcher can see every technician's status, current assignment, utilisation and next available date, and the availability calendar (assigned, leave, training, sick, unavailable) prevents re-booking someone who is already committed. Calendar, kanban and list views are all available.
Projects carry job type, site, client PO, contract, methods, codes, scope, acceptance criteria, assigned equipment and technicians, and safety induction and work permit fields. Refineries and shipyards each run their own site inductions, and recording them on the project stops a technician being sent to a gate they cannot pass. The fleet app records vehicle purpose, whether a vehicle can carry radioactive sources, its transport licence number and expiry, and its assignment to a project and driver with dates and mileage, which matters for RT crews crossing the causeway with a source. See team assignments and fleet.
Procedure control for marine and refinery clients
The procedure register records document number, revision, method, scope, material, applicable standard (such as ASME Section V or a class-society rule), acceptance criteria, and body text or an uploaded file. Procedures go from draft to submitted, reviewed, approved and published, with rejection reasons and archiving, and approved revisions are locked with a snapshot of each one.
Galveston contractors typically need two families of procedures: those written to class-society requirements for hull and weld work, and those written to owner and ASME requirements for refinery work. The register records who prepared, reviewed and approved each revision and when, so you can show a surveyor or an owner's auditor exactly which revision applied on a given date. Methods include UT, RT, MT, PT, VT, ET, TOFD, PAUT, LT, AE, hardness, PMI, CR, DR and more.
A Level III can generate an AI-assisted first draft of a procedure, with a built-in template as fallback, and then review and approve it. Approvers receive email notifications and reminders. See procedures, and for outside Level III help, consulting.
NDT quoting and invoicing software for vessel jobs and plant call-outs
Quotes in the Atlantis ERP record job type, site, project dates and applicable codes, using NDT service products flagged with method and category. A global discount can be applied, the quotation PDF carries your branding, and the client can accept and sign online, which turns the quote into a sales order.
Marine work is often quoted per vessel with tight turnaround, while refinery work runs on rate schedules and call-offs. Both end in the same invoice structure: NDT project, job or PO number, site, invoice type and industry sector in the header, with subtotals for labour, equipment and consumables, and lines carrying cost centre, method, equipment serial, technician, rate type and days or hours.
Timesheets record work type (inspection, travel, standby, setup), method, billable flag, rate multiplier, site, client and equipment serial, and go through approval. Standby is common in ship repair, where crews wait for tanks to be gas-freed or cleaned, and recording it properly is how you get paid for it. Field expenses and per diems are captured and re-billed to jobs. The financial dashboard shows revenue, cost of sales, gross margin, operating expenses, EBITDA, outstanding invoices, bills and expenses over twelve months. Taxes and payments are configured for Texas during implementation. Talk to us about your vessel and plant rates.

Cloud NDT software for small Galveston inspection companies
Many Galveston-area inspection firms are small, with a few technicians working marine and plant jobs as they come. A cloud NDT system has to suit them: browser and phone access, no server to maintain, and an implementation that starts with what hurts most. The Atlantis ERP is affordable, accessible and fully customizable, quoted on request.
The offline field app is an installable web app with method picker, photo capture, on-screen signature and PDF preview; it keeps drafts and photos on the device and syncs later. A REST API for field devices handles jobs assigned to the technician, equipment issued to them, report submission and sync. The CRM records service line, NDT service type, industry sector and estimated technicians and days, scores leads from 0 to 100, and can enrol leads in drip email sequences, useful for keeping in touch with ship managers and port tenants. The business card app turns a photographed card into a CRM lead.
The Atlantis ERP has an open REST API and integrates with SAP, Maximo, NetSuite, QuickBooks or any system that accepts API connections, scoped per implementation. For clients who want to see results on a model, Atlantis Digital Twins visualises inspection data in 3D with indication mapping and thickness trends. Training from Atlantis NDT is ASNT SNT-TC-1A based; see training and the Practical NDT simulator. Ask for a plan sized to your team.
Frequently asked questions
Which classification societies does marine mode support?
Marine mode includes a certificate library for DNV, ABS, Lloyd's Register, BV, RINA, IRS and ClassNK, and merges the relevant certificate into the report PDF with the inspector's Level II certificate and the calibration certificate.
