Canada runs on central certification, and your records need to show it
Canadian NDT differs from the US in one fundamental way. For most industrial work, technicians are certified centrally to CAN/CGSB-48.9712, Canada’s adoption of ISO 9712, through the Natural Resources Canada NDT Certifying Agency. The certificate belongs to the individual, not the employer, and it follows them from company to company. Employer-based ASNT certification still appears, especially in aerospace and for work with US parent companies or clients, but the NRCan certificate is what most Canadian owners and regulators expect to see.
That shifts what an inspection company has to track. You are not writing the certificate; you are verifying and monitoring someone else’s. You need the level, method and sector, the renewal date, and evidence that the technician’s vision test is current. On top of that sit radiation qualifications for RT crews, provincial pressure-equipment requirements, and site safety tickets that Alberta plants and nuclear stations won’t let you in without.
Many Canadian companies track all this in spreadsheets, and it shows during turnaround season in Fort McMurray or an outage in Ontario, when dozens of people need to be checked at once.
The Certificates app in Atlantis NDT ERP records every certification on the technician’s record, works out its status daily, creates a warning task 90 days before expiry, and sends daily email alerts to the people you choose. Atlantis NDT does not train or certify for CGSB or NRCan certification; the app records the certificates your technicians already hold, alongside any ASNT-based qualifications.
Recording NRCan ISO 9712 certificates
Each certification is its own record: scheme (ISO 9712 for NRCan certificates, with SNT-TC-1A, CP-189, PCN, CSWIP and other also available), level, method, certifying body, issue, expiry and renewal dates, industry sector, OJT hours, training hours, exam passed and attachments.
The fields line up with how ISO 9712 certification is structured. Certification is by method, level and sector, so a technician might hold UT Level 2 in one sector and MT Level 2 across several. The industry sector field keeps that clear. Certificates are typically valid for five years, followed by renewal on evidence of continued work activity and recertification at the ten-year point. Issue, expiry and renewal dates on each record, with a template per scheme carrying validity in months, show where each technician sits in that cycle.
For trainees, OJT and training hours matter. Candidates build up documented experience before they can be certified, and a record showing OJT and training hours against each method helps your Level 3 judge when someone is ready to apply for the exam.
Attach the scanned NRCan certificate, experience records and training certificates, and the evidence is ready when a client asks for it. Because the certifying body is a field, you can separate NRCan certificates from employer-based ASNT certificates held by the same person, each with its own status.
Vision tests on the ISO 9712 cycle
ISO 9712 requires near-vision testing at least annually, Jaeger J1 or equivalent at not less than 30 cm, plus colour vision adequate for the method. A technician with a valid NRCan certificate and an expired eye test should not be signing reports, and Canadian clients check this.
The app keeps vision tests as their own records: near vision (J1 or J2), far vision, colour perception, contrast, examiner, clinic, certificate file and expiry. The daily check creates a warning task 90 days before each vision test expires, so the next eye test is booked during a quiet week, not the morning a technician is due to fly north for a camp job.
Recording J1 or J2 also helps companies whose technicians hold both ISO 9712 and ASNT-based certificates. SNT-TC-1A accepts J2, while ISO 9712 calls for J1. The recorded result shows at a glance which requirement a test satisfies.
Many Canadian companies use occupational health clinics or optometrists for vision testing. Recording the examiner and the clinic keeps each test traceable, which auditors and client reviewers ask about. Colour perception results matter for PT and colour-contrast MT, so a Level 3 can spot any restriction before scheduling.
Radiography crews: CNSC exposure device operators and dosimetry
Industrial radiography in Canada is regulated by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. People operating exposure devices must be certified by the CNSC as exposure device operators, trainees work under the direct supervision of a certified operator, and everyone in the work area is monitored with personal dosimetry. Your licence, radiation protection programme and radiation safety officer sit on top of that.
On the technician’s NDT profile, the Certificates app records radiation safety training, the radiation badge (dosimeter) number and medical fitness expiry, alongside the highest NDT level and methods certified. A CNSC exposure device operator certification can be recorded as an other-scheme certificate with its expiry date, template and scanned card, so it gets the same 90-day warning tasks and email alerts as an NRCan certificate.
That gives the RSO one place to confirm an RT crew is fully qualified: NRCan RT certificate for interpretation, CNSC certification for operating the device, current training and a badge number. Transport of radioactive sources needs its own discipline; the Fleet app records whether a vehicle can carry radioactive sources along with its transport licence number and expiry. A transportation of dangerous goods training certificate for the driver can be tracked as an other-scheme certificate.
The app does not replace your CNSC licence records or your radiation protection programme. It keeps your people’s radiation-related qualifications visible and current.
Alberta: oil sands, upgraders and ABSA
Alberta is where much of Canada’s NDT work happens: oil sands mining and in-situ operations around Fort McMurray and Cold Lake, upgraders and refineries in the Edmonton industrial heartland, and gas plants and pipelines across the province. Pressure equipment there is regulated by ABSA under the Pressure Equipment Safety Regulation, and owners run in-service inspection programmes that contract NDT companies depend on.
Alberta sites add their own requirements. Contractors are commonly expected to hold Energy Safety Canada tickets such as H2S Alive and CSTS, first aid and site orientations, and camp jobs on rotation make it easy for a ticket to lapse while someone is away. Owners’ contractor prequalification often asks for proof of technician certification and vision tests before mobilisation.
These tickets can be tracked in the Certificates app as other-scheme certificates with expiry dates and scans, so a lapsing H2S Alive ticket shows up in the same warning tasks and emails as an NRCan renewal. If you prefer dedicated fields for site tickets, that is set up as part of the customization scope agreed with you.
Spring and fall turnarounds are where tracking falls apart. Crews grow quickly, people join from other companies with their own NRCan certificates, and everyone needs checking at once. With warning tasks generated 90 days ahead, renewals for your core crew can be pulled forward before turnaround season starts, and new arrivals’ certificates can be entered and checked as they are hired.
CSA standards, pipelines and welding inspection
Canadian codes shape what qualifications a job calls for. CSA W59 governs welded steel construction, and welding inspection organisations and inspectors are certified under CSA W178.1 and W178.2 through the CWB. CSA Z662 covers oil and gas pipeline systems, and interprovincial pipelines fall under the Canada Energy Regulator. CSA B51 sets the boiler and pressure vessel code that the provincial safety authorities apply.
For an NDT company, that often means one technician carries several kinds of qualification: an NRCan certificate in UT or RT, a CSA W178.2 welding inspector certification, and client-specific pipeline requirements. Each can sit on the same employee record in the Certificates app, the ISO 9712 certificate under its own scheme and the others under other, each with its own template, dates and attachments.
Keeping them together makes crew planning simpler. The planner can see who holds the NDT method, who holds the welding inspection certificate, and whether both are current, without cross-checking two trackers.
Your inspection procedures themselves, written to CSA and ASME requirements and approved by your Level 3, can be controlled in the Procedures app, which carries revision history and an approval workflow.
Ontario nuclear and provincial regulators
Ontario’s nuclear sector is one of the most demanding environments for NDT records. Periodic inspection of CANDU components is governed by CSA N285.4, and utilities running refurbishment and outage programmes at stations such as Bruce, Darlington and Pickering apply strict qualification, training and security requirements to contractor staff. Technicians often need client-specific qualifications on top of their NRCan certificates, plus site access and radiation worker requirements.
The Certificates app handles this layering: NRCan certificates under ISO 9712, client-specific qualifications as other-scheme certificates with their own templates, radiation safety training and badge number on the NDT profile, and medical fitness expiry where the site requires it. Every qualification has its expiry tracked and a warning task generated 90 days ahead.
Outside nuclear, provincial safety authorities differ: TSSA in Ontario, Technical Safety BC, the RBQ in Quebec and ABSA in Alberta. Their requirements affect which company certifications you hold and which your clients ask for. Company certifications, such as ISO 9001 registration or a quality programme a regulator or client requires, are tracked in the app with their own alert days.
For companies working in Quebec, the ERP interface can be set up in French as well as English during implementation.
Privacy: medical and vision data under Canadian law
Vision test results and medical fitness dates are health information. Private-sector employers are covered by PIPEDA federally and by provincial laws such as Alberta and BC PIPA and Quebec’s Law 25. The practical expectation is the same everywhere: collect what you need, limit who sees it, and protect it.
In Atlantis NDT ERP, certificates, vision tests and NDT profiles sit on the employee record, and access rights apply. During implementation we agree who sees full medical and vision details, typically HR and the QA manager, and who only sees certification status, such as planners. Hosting arrangements are agreed with you as part of the implementation. This supports your privacy obligations; it does not replace your own policies.
Who uses it in a Canadian NDT company
- QA manager: works the Expiring Soon and Expired lists, collects renewed NRCan certificates and eye test results, and prepares qualification packs for owner prequalification.
- Level 3: reviews trainee OJT and training hours, maintains the templates for each scheme, records exam sheets for any employer-based certification, and revokes a certificate when needed.
- Radiation safety officer: checks CNSC certifications, radiation safety training and badge numbers before RT crews mobilise.
- Operations manager: checks tickets and certificates before building a rotation or turnaround crew.
- Owner: watches the dashboard and company certification alerts, including the ISO registration and quality programmes clients require.
Everyone works from the same record, entered once. When the QA manager is away on a site audit, the alerts still go out and the lists still update.
How it connects and what setup looks like
Certificates connects to the rest of Atlantis NDT ERP. Timesheets warn when a technician with an invalid certificate logs hours. Dashboards show certificates expiring and expired next to calibration due and overdue. Daily email alerts cover technician certificates, calibration certificates and company certifications, with the recipients, look-ahead days and resend interval you set. The Team Assignments app blocks double-booking of technicians and equipment and warns on out-of-calibration equipment, and a certificate check at dispatch can be added in your customization scope.
Setup for a Canadian company usually covers: templates for ISO 9712 (NRCan), any ASNT-based practice you run, CNSC operator cards, CSA W178.2, Energy Safety Canada tickets and client qualifications; import of your current tracker with scanned certificates attached; alerts for the QA manager, RSO and operations; access rights for health data; and links to the other apps you use. Report signatures in the NDT Reports app, and results shown on 3D asset models through Atlantis’s separate Digital Twin Reporting Software, rest on these records.

Frequently asked questions
Can the app record NRCan certificates?
Yes. NRCan certificates issued to CAN/CGSB-48.9712 are recorded under the ISO 9712 scheme with level, method, sector and issue, expiry and renewal dates, and the scanned certificate attached.
Does Atlantis NDT train technicians for NRCan certification?
No. Atlantis NDT’s training is based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A. The Certificates app records ISO 9712 certificates your technicians hold; it does not issue them.
Can we track CNSC exposure device operator certification?
Yes, as an other-scheme certificate with its own expiry, template and scanned card. Radiation safety training and badge number are on the technician’s NDT profile.
What about H2S Alive, CSTS and other site tickets?
They can be recorded as other-scheme certificates so they receive the same warning tasks and email alerts, or added as dedicated fields within your customization scope.
How early are we warned about expiring certificates?
Certificates show as expiring soon 90 days before expiry, and warning tasks are created at the same point for certificates and vision tests. Email alert look-ahead days and resend intervals are configurable.
Can technicians hold both NRCan and ASNT certificates?
Yes. Each certificate is its own record, so an NRCan ISO 9712 certificate and an employer-based SNT-TC-1A certificate sit side by side with separate status.

Built for any business that runs on operations
Most companies do not fail at their craft. They lose time, margin and goodwill in the gaps between the tools they use to run the place — a quoting spreadsheet that does not talk to the job sheet, a job sheet that does not reach accounts, and a compliance folder nobody can search when a client asks. Atlantis closes those gaps by putting the whole operation on one platform, so information is entered once and everything downstream stays in step.
What you can run on it
- Sales and CRM — leads, quotes, follow-ups and the pipeline that tells you what next month looks like.
- Projects and job costing — plan the work, track the hours and materials against it, and see the margin while the job is still live rather than at final account.
- Field and service teams — dispatch, schedules, mobile capture that works with no signal, and sign-off from site.
- Inventory and purchasing — stock, suppliers, reorder points and goods receipt, joined to the jobs that consume them.
- People — records, qualifications and licences with renewal reminders, timesheets, leave and payroll.
- Quality and documents — procedures and forms under revision control, with the audit trail an inspection or accreditation body actually asks for.
- Accounts — invoicing, expenses, multi-currency and the reporting your accountant stops chasing you for.
Affordable, accessible, fully customizable — and we mean each word
Affordable because the whole suite is included rather than sold to you a module at a time, and because implementation is done by people who have run operations rather than by a chain of subcontractors. Accessible because it runs in a browser and on a phone, works for a small team on day one, and does not need a specialist on staff to keep it alive. Fully customizable because your process is the thing that makes you competitive — the software should bend to it, not the other way round.
Industries we configure for
Service businesses and contractors, manufacturing and fabrication, trading and distribution, laboratories and testing houses, engineering consultancies, construction and facilities, and asset owners across energy, marine, aerospace and infrastructure. Inspection and testing is where we started, and it remains the sector we go deepest in — but the platform underneath is general-purpose, and most of what it does has nothing to do with inspection at all.
What happens when you get in touch
A short conversation, not a sales sequence. We ask how the business runs today and where it hurts, show you the platform doing that work, and send a written quote shaped to your region, your team size and the scope you actually need. No obligation, nothing to install first, and no pressure to decide on the call. Reach out and tell us what you are trying to fix.
