East Chicago is built around Cleveland-Cliffs Indiana Harbor Works, the largest integrated steel mill in North America and, since Cliffs idled its Riverdale strip mill in mid-2026, the company's single integrated flagship for the Calumet region. Indiana Harbor's No. An NDT ERP serving this market has to carry the evidence those operators audit against — ASNT SNT-TC-1A, ASME Section VIII Div.
7 is the biggest blast furnace on the continent; No. 4 on the west side was indefinitely idled, leaving coke by-product plants, BOF and EAF shops, casters and hot strip mills as the inspection load. Linde's East Chicago air separation and hydrogen supply feeds the mill, and the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal carries ore, slag and petroleum barges past BP Whiting's eastern tank farm inside the city. Operators including Cleveland-Cliffs Indiana Harbor Works, Indiana Harbor No. 7 blast furnace, Linde (formerly Praxair) East Chicago industrial gas plant set the pre-qualification bar their contractors inherit. The system of record for that evidence is the ERP, not a spreadsheet a technician maintains between jobs.

| Factor | What applies | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Sectors served | Integrated steelmaking, Industrial gases, Petroleum refining and tank storage, Harbor and canal marine logistics, Slag and byproduct processing | Sets which methods, report formats and codes the system must handle |
| Codes audited against | ASNT SNT-TC-1A, ASME Section VIII Div. 1 and NBIC NB-23, API 570 for mill process and fuel-gas piping, OSHA PSM 29 CFR 1910.119 (coke by-product and gas systems), AWS D1.1, ASME B30.2 overhead crane inspection | Each demands retrievable evidence, not a claim of compliance |
| What must be retrievable on demand | Technician certification currency · equipment calibration status · the report against the asset that generated it | These three are what an auditor asks for first |
| Deployment | Cloud or on-premise · configured to the codes above · offline field capture | Field crews lose connectivity; the record cannot depend on it |
What must an NDT ERP track for inspection firms in East Chicago?
Evidence against ASNT SNT-TC-1A, ASME Section VIII Div. 1 and NBIC NB-23, API 570 for mill process and fuel-gas piping, OSHA PSM 29 CFR 1910.119 (coke by-product and gas systems), AWS D1.1. That means each technician's certification currency by method and level, each instrument's calibration status on the day it was used, and every inspection report bound to the asset and the job that produced it. An auditor asks for those three before anything else.
Can an inspection company in East Chicago run this alongside its existing accounting?
Yes. The ERP owns operations — jobs, technicians, equipment, reports — and pushes finished invoices to the accounting system, which keeps the chart of accounts, tax and reconciliation. For US firms that usually means QuickBooks; the split is documented in the QuickBooks integration guide rather than forcing a migration nobody asked for.
Does it work offline for field crews in East Chicago?
Yes. Field capture runs offline and syncs when the device reconnects, because turnaround decks, tank interiors and remote sites have no usable signal and a record that depends on connectivity is a record that gets rewritten from memory hours later. Offline capture is the difference between a contemporaneous record and a reconstruction.
How long does implementation take for a firm in East Chicago?
The configuration follows the codes and workflows above rather than a fixed template, so the timeline is set by how much existing data has to be migrated and cleaned — certification records and calibration history are the two that consume the time. Firms usually run the first job cycle in parallel before cutting over.
What happens to inspection records if a technician leaves?
They stay with the asset and the job, which is the point. Employer-based certification ends when the holder leaves, but the reports they signed remain part of the asset's inspection history and are still auditable. A system that stores records per technician rather than per asset loses that history on every departure.

NDT ERP for East Chicago inspection companies: built around mill outages, not refinery turnarounds
An NDT ERP for East Chicago has to be built around steel-mill work: short, frequent repair outages, heavy structural and crane inspection, and a client whose maintenance planners run to the hour. The software must let an inspection company staff those windows at short notice with certified people and calibrated equipment, and turn findings into signed reports before the equipment goes back into service.
East Chicago sits in the middle of the Calumet region, with Cleveland-Cliffs Indiana Harbor on the lakefront, the BP Whiting refinery next door, and Gary, Hammond and Burns Harbor all within a short drive. Indiana Harbor's No. 7 blast furnace is the largest in North America, and Cliffs has recently commissioned a hydrogen pipeline there and trialled hydrogen injection into that furnace. For inspection contractors that mix produces a steady stream of work that looks nothing like a Gulf Coast turnaround calendar. Mills take equipment down for repair outages measured in shifts or days, not weeks, and they want the same trusted crew back each time.
The Atlantis ERP solution is a fully customized ERP for NDT and inspection companies, set up and supported by Atlantis NDT (founder Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III). It is affordable, accessible and fully customizable, and this section explains how it handles the East Chicago pattern of work. To see it on your own jobs, book an East Chicago demo.
What inspection work does a steel mill generate, and what does the software have to record?
A steel mill generates a wide spread of NDT work: magnetic particle and ultrasonic testing on crane hooks, crane runway welds and girders; ultrasonic thickness surveys on vessels, ducts and furnace shells; visual and MT inspection of structural steel; and weld inspection on repairs and new piping. The software must record each method's data properly and tie it to the component, the procedure and the person.
In practice, a single mill outage might combine UT thickness readings on gas-cleaning ductwork, MT on a ladle crane's hook and trunnions, VT on a repaired conveyor structure, and PT on a stainless component in a utility system. New construction, such as hydrogen supply piping, adds weld examination with RT or PAUT, PMI to confirm materials and hardness testing. The Atlantis ERP supports 17 report types, each with its own numbering sequence: UT, RT, MT, PT, VT, ECT, IRIS, PAUT, MFL, TOFD, PWHT, PMI, hardness, UT thickness, ferrite, holiday and coating, and computed radiography.
Method-specific fields are built in. UT reports carry a probe calibration table. RT reports record source, technique, IQI type and placement. MT reports record technique and particle type, PT records method and developer, PAUT records focal laws and UT thickness records readings by direction. Weld and job lines carry defect type and orientation, and every report closes with acceptable, not acceptable or acceptable with remarks. That structure is what lets a mill's engineering team compare this year's crane-hook MT with last year's without reading two differently formatted PDFs side by side.
Crew dispatch and scheduling software for short-notice mill outages
Crew dispatch in the Atlantis ERP treats each job as a team assignment that moves from planned to dispatched, in field, submitted and closed. It blocks double-booking of technicians and of equipment serial numbers and warns when assigned equipment is out of calibration, which is what you need when a mill calls on Thursday for a Saturday outage.
The technician availability calendar records assigned, leave, training, sick and unavailable days and blocks overlaps, and time off requests feed it. For each technician the dispatcher sees status, current assignment, utilisation and next available date, in calendar, kanban or list view. Each assignment holds site GPS coordinates and mobilisation and demobilisation dates, which helps when one crew is split between a lakefront gate at Indiana Harbor and a job in Whiting the same day.
Projects record the NDT job type, site, client PO, contract, methods, codes, scope and acceptance criteria, the assigned equipment and technicians, and fields for safety induction and work permit. Steel mills run strict site access, and a technician whose induction has lapsed is sent home at the gate. Capturing induction and permit details on the project keeps that information in front of the dispatcher. Tasks under a project carry method, technician, component, result, indication and defect counts, procedure and WPS references, so the outage summary for the client builds itself as work is done. See team assignments and projects.
Technician certification tracking software: SNT-TC-1A records a mill auditor can read
Technician certification tracking records every certificate by scheme (SNT-TC-1A, CP-189, ISO 9712, PCN, CSWIP or other), level (trainee, I, II or III), method, certifying body, industry sector and issue, expiry and renewal dates, with OJT hours, training hours, exam result and attachments. The system marks each one active, expiring soon, expired or revoked without anyone updating it by hand.
Mill quality and contractor-safety departments tend to ask for the same evidence every time a new name appears on a crew list. Holding it in one record per person means the office can send it in minutes. Vision tests are part of the record: Jaeger J1/J2 near vision, far vision, colour perception and contrast, with the examiner, clinic, certificate file and expiry date. Colour perception matters for MT and PT work, which is much of what a mill orders. Examination sheets hold general, specific and practical scores against a passing score that defaults to 70 percent and can be set per certificate template. Certificate templates per scheme define validity in months, whether a vision test and exam are required, and minimum OJT and training hours.
Daily checks create warning tasks 90 days before a certificate or vision test expires, and configurable daily email alerts cover technician certificates, calibration certificates and company certifications, with your own recipients, look-ahead days and resend interval. Timesheets warn when a technician's certificate is not valid. The employee NDT profile adds radiation safety training, radiation badge number and medical fitness expiry, which matters if your company runs RT on new construction piping. See the certificates app.
Calibration management software for gauges that live in the dust
Calibration management in the Atlantis ERP holds a full record for every calibration: provider, certificate number, standard, range, uncertainty, accredited-lab flag, pass, fail or conditional result and next due date. A calibration certificate register stores the lab's accreditation number and the PDF, shows valid, expiring or expired status and sends expiry alerts.
Steel-mill work is hard on instruments. Yokes, UT flaw detectors, thickness gauges and probes are exposed to heat, scale and dust, and they get dropped. The maintenance log records preventive, corrective and repair work, cleaning, firmware updates and probe replacement, with the condition before and after. The issue and return workflow needs supervisor and manager approval and records condition on the way out and on the way back, so when a yoke comes back from an outage failing its lift test you can see which job it came from. Each item carries its serial number, type, assigned person, condition, asset tag, firmware, accessories and a lifecycle status: new, active, in calibration, in repair, rented out, retired or disposed. Rental rates can be recorded if you hire equipment to other contractors.
Reservations prevent two crews claiming the same kit, and inbound and outbound movements are recorded. Consumables such as MT particles, contrast paint, penetrant, developer, couplant and PPE are tracked with reorder levels and a low-stock flag, so a Saturday outage does not stall for lack of white contrast paint. See asset management.
NDT reporting software that closes out an outage before the mill restarts
Mill outages end on schedule whether or not the paperwork is finished, so reports need to be drafted in the field and approved within hours. In the Atlantis ERP, reports move from draft to in progress, review, approved and sent, with inspector, reviewer and approver signatures and, where required, a third-party or authorised inspector's name and signature.
The offline field app is an installable web app that works without signal inside furnace buildings and under crane runways, stores drafts and photos locally and syncs when a connection returns. Technicians pick the method, capture photos, sign on screen and preview the PDF before leaving the job. Every report records work order, request, WPS, contract, drawing, procedure and standard references, which is what a mill's maintenance engineer needs to file it against the right equipment.
Company templates are versioned in Excel, Word, PDF or HTML with logo, header and footer, and Excel templates are filled automatically by mapping fields to cells. That helps when a mill's reliability group insists on its own thickness-survey spreadsheet. A REST API for field devices supports jobs assigned to the technician, equipment issued to them, report submission and sync. For clients who want to see findings on a 3D model, Atlantis Digital Twins shows inspection data with damage and indication mapping and thickness trends. See also Digital Twin Reporting Software.
Procedure control for a Level III serving several mills and a refinery
The procedure register records each procedure's document number, revision, method, scope, material, applicable standard (for example ASME Section V or AWS D1.1), acceptance criteria and body text or uploaded file. The approval workflow runs draft, submitted, reviewed, approved and published, with rejection reasons and archiving, and approved revisions are locked.
An East Chicago contractor often works for a steel mill, a refinery and a structural fabricator in the same month, and each expects procedures written to its own requirements. Every revision is stored as a snapshot with who prepared, reviewed and approved it and when, so if a mill auditor asks which MT procedure revision applied to a crane inspection eighteen months ago, you can show the exact text. Methods covered include UT, RT, MT, PT, VT, ET, TOFD, PAUT, LT, AE, hardness, PMI, CR, DR and more.
A Level III can generate an AI-assisted first draft of a new procedure, with a built-in template as fallback, then edit, review and approve it. Approvers receive email notifications and reminders, so procedures are not held up waiting for a signature. For outside Level III support, see consulting. For details, see the procedures app.
NDT quoting and invoicing software for outage work and standing agreements
Mill work is usually billed against a blanket purchase order or a rate schedule, with each outage called off separately. The Atlantis ERP quote records job type, site, project dates and applicable codes, uses NDT service products flagged with method and category, supports a global discount, produces a branded PDF and allows online acceptance and signature that converts the quote to a sales order.
Invoices carry the NDT project, the job or PO number, the site, the invoice type and the industry sector, with separate subtotals for labour, equipment and consumables. Lines carry cost centre, method, equipment serial, technician, rate type and days or hours. Mills' accounts-payable teams often match invoices to call-off numbers line by line, and this is the detail that gets an invoice paid instead of returned.
Timesheets record work type (inspection, travel, standby or setup), method, billable flag, rate multiplier, site, client and equipment serial, and go through approval before billing. Standby matters in a mill: crews regularly wait for equipment to be isolated, cooled or cleaned, and recording standby against the job is how you bill it under your agreement. Field expenses and per diems are captured in the expenses app and re-billed to jobs. Taxes and payments are configured for Indiana during implementation. Ask how we would set up your rate schedule.
Spreadsheets vs generic ERP vs Atlantis ERP in a steel-mill market
| Question a mill or auditor asks | Spreadsheets | Generic ERP | Atlantis ERP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Was this technician certified in MT on the day of the crane inspection? | Check the sheet and hope it was current | Depends on custom fields | Certificate record with dated status and timesheet warning |
| Was the yoke in calibration? | Find the certificate PDF | Generic maintenance record | Calibration record, certificate register and out-of-calibration warning at assignment |
| Which procedure revision was used? | Folder of Word files | Document storage only | Locked revision snapshots with approvers and dates |
| Can the same crew be promised to two outages? | Discovered on the day | Resource calendar, no NDT context | Double-booking of technicians and equipment blocked |
| What did this outage cost us? | Rebuilt at month end | Possible with setup | Timesheets, invoice lines and financial dashboard by job |

Affordable, customizable ERP for small NDT companies in the Calumet region
Many contractors in the Calumet region are small: a handful of Level IIs, one Level III, a few vans and a lot of repeat mill work. For them, an affordable ERP has to go live in stages and run without an IT department. The Atlantis ERP runs in a browser and on a phone, includes the business apps rather than selling them separately, and is configured around your process during implementation.
Most companies start with certificates and calibration, because those are the records mills check first, then add projects and dispatch, then reporting and invoicing. The CRM records service line, lead source, NDT service type, industry sector and estimated technicians and days, scores each lead from 0 to 100 as hot, warm, nurture or cold, and can run drip email sequences by service line. Business cards collected at regional industry events can be photographed and turned into leads with one click.
The Atlantis ERP has an open REST API and integrates with SAP, Maximo, NetSuite, QuickBooks or any system that accepts API connections, scoped per implementation. Large mill operators often run SAP or Maximo, and a contractor who can deliver results into that system is easier to keep on the approved list. Dashboards show certificates expiring, equipment calibration due or overdue and issued equipment not returned, plus a 12-month financial view. Training through Atlantis NDT is ASNT SNT-TC-1A based; see training and the Practical NDT 3D simulator.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Atlantis ERP handle crane and lifting-equipment inspection reports?
Yes, through the standard method reports: MT, UT, VT and PT with weld and job lines, defect type and orientation and an overall result. Any client-specific crane checklist format can be set up as a versioned company template during implementation.
Can a mill's SAP or Maximo receive our inspection results?
Yes, where the client allows it. The ERP has an open REST API and integrates with SAP, Maximo and other systems that accept API connections, with the scope agreed during implementation.
Will the field app work inside a furnace building with no signal?
Yes. The offline field app stores drafts and photos on the device and syncs later, with photo capture, on-screen signature and PDF preview.
How does it stop the same technician being sent to two outages?
Team assignments block double-booking of technicians and of equipment serial numbers, and the availability calendar blocks overlaps with leave, training or sickness.
Is pricing published?
No. The Atlantis ERP is quoted on request based on your scope, users and integrations. It is positioned to be affordable for small and mid-size inspection companies.
Can it record ISO 9712 or CSWIP certificates our technicians already hold?
Yes. The certificate record supports SNT-TC-1A, CP-189, ISO 9712, PCN, CSWIP and other schemes. Atlantis NDT's own training is ASNT SNT-TC-1A based only.
