Water-Washable Penetrant
Water-washable penetrant is a PT system containing self-emulsifying surfactants so that excess penetrant can be removed by a direct water spray, suitable for high-volume production inspection.
Definition
Method A penetrants (per ASTM E165) include built-in emulsifiers. They are economical and fast but more prone to over-washing, which can remove penetrant from shallow defects.

- Solvent-Removable Penetrant — Solvent-removable penetrant is a Type I or II PT system in which excess penetrant is removed by wiping with a solvent-dampened cloth, used in field inspection where water rinsing is impractical.
- Post-Emulsifiable Penetrant — Post-emulsifiable penetrant requires a separate emulsifier (hydrophilic or lipophilic) to be applied after penetrant dwell before water rinsing, offering the highest sensitivity and most controlled wash characteristics.
