Dwell Time

Dwell time is the duration that penetrant is allowed to remain on the test surface before excess removal, allowing capillary action to draw the dye into surface-breaking discontinuities.

Definition

Typical penetrant dwell time is 5–30 minutes; developer dwell (after application) is 7–60 minutes. Dwell times are specified by penetrant manufacturer, code (ASME Section V Article 6), and material/temperature.

What it governs

The period a penetrant is left on the surface before excess removal, during which capillary action draws it into surface-breaking discontinuities. Tight, shallow flaws need the longest dwell because the capillary driving force is opposed by viscosity.

How it is set

Specified by penetrant type, material and expected discontinuity, and it must not be allowed to dry — a penetrant that dries in place is far harder to remove correctly and produces background that masks indications. Temperature shifts the appropriate dwell substantially.

ASME Section V Article 6 sets dwell requirements; ASTM E165 gives the standard practice; ASTM E1417 defines the process requirements including dwell by penetrant sensitivity level.

The common shortcut

Shortening dwell to keep pace with production. It is the single most common cause of missed tight cracks in penetrant testing, and it leaves no trace in the finished examination record unless dwell is recorded.

What happens if penetrant dwell time is exceeded?

Within reason, longer dwell is not harmful to detection, but if the penetrant dries on the surface it becomes difficult to remove without also removing what entered the flaws, and background fluorescence or colour rises to the point where indications are masked. Codes therefore set both a minimum and a practical maximum.
