ASTM E165 Liquid Penetrant Examination
ASTM E165 is the standard practice for liquid penetrant testing, defining Type I (fluorescent), Type II (visible) penetrants, and Methods A (water-washable), B (post-emulsifiable lipophilic), C (solvent-removable), D (post-emulsifiable hydrophilic), and developer forms a–e.

ASTM E165 is the principal North American PT standard, referenced by ASME Section V Article 6 for general industrial use. ASTM E1417 covers aerospace and other high-sensitivity applications.
