AWS D1.5 Bridge Welding Code
AWS D1.5 is the bridge welding code, jointly published by AWS and AASHTO, defining procedure and welder qualification, materials, NDT (with stricter acceptance than D1.1), and fabrication requirements for highway and railway bridges.
Definition
AWS D1.5 acceptance is stricter than D1.1 because bridges are fatigue-critical structures. PAUT per Annex K is replacing RT for bridge girth welds in recent years.

How it is applied
Fracture-critical members carry enhanced examination, tighter acceptance and specific welder and consumable controls. RT and UT extent is specified by member classification, not inspector discretion.
