API 581 Risk-Based Inspection Methodology

API 581 is the recommended practice that provides the quantitative methodology — probability of failure and consequence of failure calculations — for a Risk-Based Inspection program implemented under API 580.

Definition

API 581 calculates probability of failure from damage mechanism susceptibility, inspection effectiveness, and equipment age, and calculates consequence of failure from fluid inventory, toxicity, and area impact. Risk = POF × COF determines the optimal inspection interval and effectiveness.
