Procedure control for Indian NDT companies
Indian NDT companies juggle more document regimes than most. A single company may inspect boiler tubes and steam piping under the Indian Boiler Regulations for a power plant, radiograph pressure vessel welds for a fabricator in Vadodara or Pune, support a turnaround at a refinery in Jamnagar, Mumbai, Visakhapatnam or Kochi, and bid for a PSU tender that asks for its complete procedure list before the technical bid is even opened.
Each of those clients reads your procedures with different eyes. The boiler inspecting authority wants to see that the procedure meets IBR. The PSU’s project management consultant wants it to match the tender specification and returns it with comments. The fabricator’s third-party inspector wants the revision referenced on the traveller. And radiography brings AERB’s requirements on top.
When the procedure library lives in email attachments and a shared folder, the same questions keep coming back: which revision did we submit, which one was accepted, who approved it, and is the site team using the right one?
The Procedures app in the Atlantis NDT ERP answers them from one controlled register. Each procedure carries its document number, revision, method, scope, material, applicable standard and acceptance criteria, with body text or an uploaded file. It moves through draft, submitted, reviewed, approved and published, with rejected and archived states. Preparer, reviewer and approver names and dates are recorded, approved revisions are locked, a snapshot of every revision is kept, and approvers get email notifications and reminders. Atlantis NDT has a team in Hyderabad and sets the app up for you.
IBR work: boilers, steam piping and inspecting authorities
Boilers and steam pipes in India are governed by the Indian Boiler Regulations, administered through the state Chief Inspectors of Boilers and the inspecting authorities recognised under the regulations. IBR sets requirements for the manufacture, erection and repair of boilers and steam piping, including radiographic and other examination of welds, and the inspecting authority reviews documents and witnesses work at the stages it chooses.
For an NDT company, IBR work means procedures that reflect IBR requirements specifically, not just a general ASME procedure with a new cover. The extent of radiography, the acceptance standards applied and the documentation the inspector expects can differ from what the same client asks for on non-IBR piping in the same plant.
The Procedures app keeps IBR procedures distinct. Each is its own record with IBR noted in the applicable standard and the acceptance criteria stated explicitly, so a document controller can filter the register and pull every procedure approved for IBR work in seconds when an inspecting authority or client asks. When the requirements change, each affected procedure goes through a controlled revision, and the previous revision is kept as a snapshot for any query about work already done.
That history matters for power plant owners and boiler makers, whose equipment and records stay in service for decades. Years after erection, a question about a weld radiographed under IBR can be answered with the exact procedure revision used, rather than a best guess from whoever still remembers the job.
PSU tenders, PMCs and document review
Much of India’s refinery, pipeline and petrochemical work comes through public sector undertakings such as IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, ONGC and GAIL, often with a project management consultant such as EIL reviewing contractor and vendor documents. Tender pre-qualification commonly asks for evidence of your quality system and a list of NDT procedures, and after award your procedures are submitted, reviewed against the project specification and returned with a review status and comments until they are accepted.
Refinery work also sits under Oil Industry Safety Directorate standards for inspection and safety, which shape what owners expect from inspection contractors on operating plants.
That review cycle is where document control breaks. The same UT procedure goes to three projects, each with slightly different specification clauses. Comments from one project get fixed in one copy and not another. Six months later nobody is sure which copy was finally accepted.
In the Procedures app, each project or client variant is its own record, numbered so the link to the tender or project is obvious. Internal review comments become rejection reasons on the record, so the author knows exactly why a draft came back before it goes to the PMC. Each resubmission is a new revision with a snapshot, so you can show the reviewer what changed in response to each round of comments. Tracking the PMC’s own review status and transmittal number for each submission can be added as part of the customization scope agreed with you. When the next tender asks for your procedure list, you pull it from the register by method and standard.
The codes underneath: ASME, API and BIS
Most Indian NDT procedures for pressure equipment and piping rest on ASME: Section V for procedure requirements, Section VIII and B31.3 for acceptance on vessels and process piping, B31.1 for power piping. API codes frame in-service work at refineries and tank farms, and API 1104 appears on pipeline projects. Bureau of Indian Standards documents such as IS 2595 for radiographic testing appear in some specifications, particularly older plants and government work, and EN ISO standards appear on projects designed by European licensors or EPCs.
That variety is why the applicable standard and acceptance criteria are separate fields on each procedure record. A reviewer can see at once whether a radiography procedure is written to ASME Section V with Section VIII acceptance, to IBR, or to a BIS standard, instead of hunting for it in the document. You can filter the register by standard when a code edition changes or a client moves to a new specification, then take each affected procedure through revision.
The AI-assisted first draft helps when a tender calls for a procedure you have never written — say a PAUT procedure for a client that has started accepting it in place of radiography on certain welds. The app produces a draft from the method, scope, material, standard and acceptance criteria you enter, or a built-in template if the AI service is unavailable. Your Level III then does the real work: reviewing, correcting and approving before anything is published.
Who approves: ASNT and ISO 9712 in the same company
Indian NDT companies commonly have both ASNT-based certifications under an employer’s SNT-TC-1A written practice and ISO 9712 certifications, including those issued through the Indian Society for NDT’s national scheme. Clients differ in what they ask for: some PSU and export projects specify ISO 9712, while US-linked clients and many EPCs accept or require ASNT-based qualification.
The Certificates app records both, along with CP-189, PCN and CSWIP where technicians hold them, with level, method, certifying body, issue and expiry dates, OJT and training hours and attachments. Status is computed automatically — active, expiring soon, expired or revoked — and warning tasks appear before expiry. Before you route a procedure for approval, you can confirm that the Level III holds a current certificate in that method under the scheme the client expects.
Atlantis NDT’s own NDT training is based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A. Atlantis does not train or certify for ISO 9712; the app simply records those certificates alongside the rest.
AERB and radiation protection procedures
Industrial radiography in India is regulated by the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board. Companies must hold AERB licences for radiography exposure devices, applied for and managed through AERB’s online licensing system, with an approved Radiological Safety Officer and certified radiography personnel. AERB’s requirements for industrial radiography cover the use, storage, transport and emergency handling of sources, and licensees are expected to have written procedures for them.
These radiation protection procedures are controlled documents in their own right, and AERB inspections check that they are current. In the Procedures app they sit in the same register as RT, CR and DR technique procedures, with their own numbering and approval chain — typically the RSO and management — and the same locked approved revisions and revision history. After an inspection or incident review leads to a change, the revision goes through the workflow and the previous version is preserved.
Supporting records live elsewhere in the ERP. The employee NDT profile records radiation safety training, radiation badge number and medical fitness expiry, and RSO or radiographer certification can be recorded as a certificate with its expiry so it is flagged before it lapses. The Fleet app records whether a vehicle can carry radioactive sources and its transport licence number and expiry.
PESO and gas storage equipment
Fabricators and owners of vessels for compressed and liquefied gases work under the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation, through rules such as the Static and Mobile Pressure Vessels (Unfired) Rules and the Gas Cylinders Rules. NDT companies supporting that work — radiography and ultrasonic examination of vessel welds, examination of storage installations — find that PESO-related projects bring their own documentation expectations, usually built on ASME or other recognised codes plus the requirements set in the approval.
As with IBR, the answer is to keep these procedures distinct and clearly labelled rather than mixing them into a general library. In the Procedures app, a PESO-related procedure is its own record with the applicable code and acceptance criteria stated, approved by your Level III, locked on approval and kept in the revision history. When a fabricator’s documentation package is assembled for approval, the procedure number and revision referenced in your reports point to a document you can produce exactly as approved.
Personal data under the DPDP Act
The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 applies to the personal data your company holds about employees and technicians. The procedure register itself holds little: the names of preparers, reviewers and approvers and the dates they acted, which your quality system requires you to keep. The more sensitive data — certificates, vision tests, medical fitness and radiation badge numbers — sits in the Certificates app and employee records.
During implementation we agree access rights so field staff see published procedures without seeing colleagues’ personal records, and we agree how long archived revisions and approval records are kept in line with your retention policy and client contracts. Your obligations under the Act stay with you; the setup is designed to support them.
Connected to the rest of the ERP
The Procedures app is part of the Atlantis NDT ERP. Project tasks carry procedure and WPS references. The NDT Reports app captures procedure and standard references on each report type, with inspector, reviewer and approver signatures and the third-party inspector’s name and signature, so the report your client receives quotes the procedure revision actually used. GST and other invoicing settings in the wider ERP are configured locally during implementation. See the full list of ERP apps for how certificates, equipment and assignments connect.
For owners who want inspection results on the asset itself, Atlantis offers Digital Twin Reporting Software, a separate companion product that places inspection results on a 3D model of the asset and works alongside the ERP’s NDT Reports app.
Implementation and Level III support
We start from your existing library: base procedures, IBR, PESO and project variants, radiation procedures, the standards each cites and who approved them. We agree numbering that makes the client or regime obvious, set approval routes by method, load the register, configure reminders and run a live revision with your team. The ERP is affordable, accessible and fully customizable, with pricing on request.
If your procedures need rewriting for a tender or an audit, Atlantis NDT offers procedure writing and review by ASNT Level III personnel through its NDT consulting services. Book a Procedures demo for your Indian team.
Frequently asked questions
Can we keep IBR procedures separate from general procedures?
Yes. Each IBR procedure is its own record with IBR noted in the applicable standard, so you can filter and produce them on request.
Can we manage PMC comments on PSU projects?
Each resubmission is a new revision with a snapshot, and internal rejections carry their reason. Tracking the PMC’s review status and transmittal number can be added in the agreed customization scope.
Does the app record both ASNT and ISO 9712 certificates?
Yes, with level, method, certifying body and expiry. Atlantis records ISO 9712 certificates but trains only to ASNT SNT-TC-1A.
Where do AERB radiation procedures go?
In the same register, with their own numbering and approval chain, locked approved revisions and full revision history.
Does the AI draft replace our Level III?
No. It is a first draft, or a built-in template if AI is unavailable. A Level III reviews and approves before publication.
How is the Procedures app quoted?
On request. The quote depends on the apps, number of users and customization you choose, and whether you want procedure writing support as well.

Built for any business that runs on operations
Most companies do not fail at their craft. They lose time, margin and goodwill in the gaps between the tools they use to run the place — a quoting spreadsheet that does not talk to the job sheet, a job sheet that does not reach accounts, and a compliance folder nobody can search when a client asks. Atlantis closes those gaps by putting the whole operation on one platform, so information is entered once and everything downstream stays in step.
What you can run on it
- Sales and CRM — leads, quotes, follow-ups and the pipeline that tells you what next month looks like.
- Projects and job costing — plan the work, track the hours and materials against it, and see the margin while the job is still live rather than at final account.
- Field and service teams — dispatch, schedules, mobile capture that works with no signal, and sign-off from site.
- Inventory and purchasing — stock, suppliers, reorder points and goods receipt, joined to the jobs that consume them.
- People — records, qualifications and licences with renewal reminders, timesheets, leave and payroll.
- Quality and documents — procedures and forms under revision control, with the audit trail an inspection or accreditation body actually asks for.
- Accounts — invoicing, expenses, multi-currency and the reporting your accountant stops chasing you for.
Affordable, accessible, fully customizable — and we mean each word
Affordable because the whole suite is included rather than sold to you a module at a time, and because implementation is done by people who have run operations rather than by a chain of subcontractors. Accessible because it runs in a browser and on a phone, works for a small team on day one, and does not need a specialist on staff to keep it alive. Fully customizable because your process is the thing that makes you competitive — the software should bend to it, not the other way round.
Industries we configure for
Service businesses and contractors, manufacturing and fabrication, trading and distribution, laboratories and testing houses, engineering consultancies, construction and facilities, and asset owners across energy, marine, aerospace and infrastructure. Inspection and testing is where we started, and it remains the sector we go deepest in — but the platform underneath is general-purpose, and most of what it does has nothing to do with inspection at all.
What happens when you get in touch
A short conversation, not a sales sequence. We ask how the business runs today and where it hurts, show you the platform doing that work, and send a written quote shaped to your region, your team size and the scope you actually need. No obligation, nothing to install first, and no pressure to decide on the call. Reach out and tell us what you are trying to fix.
