VR, AR, and Mixed Reality in NDT Training: What's Actually Working
How VR/AR is realistically used in industrial NDT training today — procedure walkthroughs, equipment familiarization, hazard-free scenario practice — and what it still doesn't replace: logged OJT hours and the practical exam.
What VR/AR Actually Does in Industrial Training Today
Virtual and augmented reality have moved past the novelty stage in industrial training generally, and NDT training programs are part of that shift. The realistic use cases cluster around a few specific things immersive tools are genuinely good at:
- Procedure walkthroughs: Stepping a trainee through a scan pattern, a calibration sequence, or an equipment setup procedure in a simulated environment before they touch real equipment, so the first live attempt isn't also their first exposure to the sequence.
- Equipment-familiarization simulation: Learning the controls, screen layout, and settings of a UT flaw detector, a phased-array unit, or a radiography exposure device in simulation first, which shortens the ramp-up time once a trainee is on real equipment.
- Confined-space and radiation-safety scenario training without real hazard exposure: Practicing entry procedures for a confined space, or reviewing radiation-safety protocols and source-handling sequences for RT work, in a simulated environment removes the real hazard from the training rep while still building situational familiarity.
- Remote expert-assist via AR overlay: A field technician wearing an AR headset or using a tablet overlay can get real-time guidance from a remote Level II or Level III walking them through an unfamiliar setup or a tricky interpretation call — a genuinely useful application for multi-site operations where a senior inspector can't physically be everywhere at once.
What It Doesn't Replace: Logged OJT Hours and the Practical Exam
This is the part that doesn't move regardless of how good the simulation gets. SNT-TC-1A and ISO 9712 both require documented on-the-job experience hours — logged, supervised, real hours on real equipment and real components — before a candidate can sit for certification at a given level. Neither scheme accepts simulated time as a substitute for those logged hours. The practical exam component of certification likewise has to be demonstrated on real equipment against real reference standards, not in a headset. VR/AR training is additive preparation before and alongside hands-on practice — it doesn't shorten the certification pathway's hour requirements or replace the practical exam.
Where This Fits Into Atlantis NDT Training
Atlantis NDT's training programs incorporate an immersive VR/AR-enhanced component for procedure walkthroughs and equipment familiarization ahead of hands-on practical work — used as preparation that runs alongside the certified OJT-hour and practical-exam pathway required by SNT-TC-1A and ACCP, not as a substitute for either. The certification math is unchanged: Level I through Level III still require the training hours, logged experience, and practical demonstration set out in our ASNT certification guide, across methods including ultrasonic testing and radiographic testing.
Where the Technology Is Heading
The realistic trajectory is more of the same: better-fidelity simulation for procedure and equipment familiarization, more remote-assist AR use for multi-site field support, and continued reliance on real logged hours and a real practical exam as the actual gate to certification. The value of VR/AR in this context is in reducing the number of mistakes a trainee makes on their first live attempts and in extending a senior inspector's reach across sites — not in replacing the accountability structure that certification schemes are built around.
