What Ultrasonic Testing (UT) actually detects

Ultrasonic testing uses high-frequency sound introduced into the component to detect internal discontinuities and measure remaining wall thickness. Pulse-echo with straight and angle beam probes covers most weld and corrosion work; phased array and TOFD extend coverage and sizing accuracy on thick sections and complex geometry.

  • Lack of fusion and incomplete penetration in welds
  • Planar cracks, including service-induced cracking
  • Laminations and inclusions in plate and forgings
  • General and localised wall loss from corrosion or erosion
  • Hydrogen-induced cracking and blistering in sour service

Codes and acceptance criteria applied

Examinations are performed to written procedures qualified against ASME Section V Article 4, ASME Section VIII Division 1, AWS D1.1 Section 6, API 1104, ISO 17640 and ISO 16810. Acceptance criteria are taken from the construction or in-service code governing the item — ASME Section VIII for pressure vessels, ASME B31.3 for process piping, API 510, API 570 and API 653 for in-service equipment, and AWS D1.1 for structural steel.

How the examination is controlled in Tampa

Agree personnel qualification, equipment checks, procedure revision and review responsibilities for the examination. Retain those records with the results and coverage limitations.

Reporting and follow-up

Results are issued in the client's required format with indications located against the component and, where relevant, against a corrosion monitoring location so thickness trends stay continuous between campaigns. Findings can be delivered into the client's own maintenance system, or onto a 3D asset model where remaining life and risk-based inspection ranking update as new data arrives.

Ultrasonic testing in Tampa: field UT scope, and where UT training is

If you need ultrasonic testing done in Tampa, the usual jobs are thickness surveys on terminal tanks and piping, hull gauging in drydock, and weld examination at power and process plants. Atlantis is Houston-based and sends crews to the site for that work. If you want to learn UT, go to ultrasonic testing training and NDT training in Tampa instead.

Fuel terminals. Kinder Morgan's main Tampa terminal has about 1.8 million barrels of storage across 31 tanks, the largest holding 120,000 barrels. Ships deliver gasoline blendstock, diesel, jet fuel, ethanol and biodiesel to it through the Port Tampa Bay Central Manifold. The terminal also feeds the Central Florida Pipeline, whose 16-inch line runs about 110 miles to Orlando, while the 10-inch line carries jet fuel. Routine UT at terminals like this covers:

  • shell and roof thickness readings under API 653;
  • thickness at condition monitoring locations on manifold and transfer piping under API 570;
  • wall checks on the pipeline launch and receipt facilities.

Readings are worth more when they are taken at the same marked locations each time, because the corrosion rate comes from the difference between campaigns.

Drydock hull gauging. Tugs, barges and articulated tug-barge units are lifted on Hendry Corporation's 2,500-ton drydock at Port Hendry or docked at Edison Chouest's Tampa Ship yard. There they are gauged for plate wastage against the classification society's allowable limits before any steel renewal is agreed. Readings taken through paint use an echo-to-echo technique so the coating thickness is excluded. Each reading is useful only if it is tied to a frame and strake location the surveyor can find again.

Power plants and pipelines. Big Bend now runs two heat recovery steam generators and a repowered Unit 1 steam turbine. At outages that brings HRSG tube thickness readings, header and attachment weld examination, and phased array inspection of high-energy piping welds. HRSG tube readings are taken from inside the casing, so access and scaffolding set the pace of the job more than the UT itself does. South of the bay, the Gulfstream natural gas pipeline comes ashore at Port Manatee at the end of a 36-inch offshore mainline. On integrity digs on pipelines like this, UT sizes wall loss and checks for laminations on the exposed pipe.

Theory is online and self-paced. Your employer certifies you under its SNT-TC-1A written practice; the course does not.

Getting UT done. Send the asset list, nominal thicknesses, any previous survey data and the access window. Larger surveys are covered by piping inspection in Tampa and automated UT and corrosion mapping. Request ultrasonic testing in Tampa.
