Ultrasonic Testing (UT) Services in Houston 2026 — ASNT Level III Led

Atlantis NDT delivers professional Ultrasonic Testing (UT) inspection services in Houston from ASNT NDT Level II + III certified inspectors. Specialising in weld inspection, thickness measurement, corrosion mapping and flaw detection. UT demand around Houston comes mainly from oil & gas, petrochemical & refining. Technicians are qualified to the governing SNT-TC-1A written practice, and procedures and reports are reviewed by an ASNT NDT Level III (UT, RT, MT, PT, VT). Where we work: nationwide. Technicians are mobilised to your site anywhere in the USA; apart from the Houston office there is no local office, so mobilisation is planned and quoted for each job.

For the national service, with what you receive, what UT finds and how crews are mobilised, see ultrasonic inspection services.

Ultrasonic testing in Houston: what the work actually is

Houston is the densest NDT services market in North America — the ship channel refineries and chemical complexes from Pasadena to Baytown, the upstream and midstream head offices that buy inspection nationally, and a fabrication belt building pressure vessels and offshore modules.

UT is the backbone of every Houston corrosion programme — thickness at condition monitoring locations across crude, vacuum and coker circuits, phased array on weld examination, corrosion mapping on the areas that matter, and high-temperature techniques where insulation cannot come off.

What governs acceptance here

API 510, 570 and 653 govern in-service inspection of vessels, piping and tanks; ASME Section V supplies the methods and Section VIII and B31.3 the acceptance; operator contractor-approval gates site access on top of SNT-TC-1A certification. An examination that is technically sound but performed outside the governing regime is not an examination anyone will accept — which is why the code family matters as much as the technique in Houston.

How Atlantis delivers UT in Houston

Teams are mobilised to your site under Atlantis procedures with ASNT Level III oversight — we do not claim a depot or laboratory in Houston, and say so plainly. What you receive is the examination performed to a qualified procedure, findings evaluated against the acceptance criteria your contract names, and records structured to survive a client audit years later. Scope a UT examination · Ultrasonic testing services · UT training and certification.

Houston scopes are quoted from the national ultrasonic testing service: thickness surveys, weld examination, corrosion mapping and phased array performed to a qualified procedure.

Ultrasonic testing in Houston: inspection scopes, and where UT training and certification are covered

This page covers UT inspection on Houston assets: refinery and chemical plant piping and vessels, ship channel tanks, pipelines and fabrication shops. If you want ultrasonic testing training or certification in Houston, see the Houston training pages linked below. Atlantis is based in Houston and offers both. It sends inspection crews to site, and it trains UT Level I and II technicians.

The plants behind Houston UT work. ExxonMobil's Baytown refinery, next to the ship channel, processes about 588,000 barrels a day and is one of the largest refineries in the country. Deer Park's refinery has been wholly owned by Pemex since Shell left the joint venture in January 2022, and it processes about 275,000 barrels of crude a day. Olefins, polymer and specialty chemical plants line the channel between them. LyondellBasell finished shutting down its Houston refinery in early 2025, which has changed the mix of work on that part of the channel. The steady demand is for thickness readings at condition monitoring locations, phased array and TOFD on welds, and corrosion mapping where wall loss is localized.

What drives vessel and piping UT in Texas. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation's program under the Texas Boiler Act (Health and Safety Code Chapter 755) covers boilers only. Those boilers are inspected by TDLR deputy inspectors, insurers or authorized inspection agencies. For unfired vessels and process piping, UT demand comes from the owner's API 510 and 570 programs, the mechanical integrity element of OSHA process safety management (29 CFR 1910.119) and insurer requirements. Atlantis performs the NDE and reviews the data for those programs. It does not act as the API inspector. On pipelines, the Railroad Commission of Texas oversees intrastate lines, and PHMSA covers interstate lines.

If you came here for UT training or certification. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, the employer certifies its technicians against its written practice. Training, experience and examinations together lead to that certification. Atlantis delivers UT Level I and II as self-paced online theory followed by practical sessions. The Practical NDT 3D simulator lets trainees practice scanning before they work on real welds. Use these pages:

Technicians aiming at Level III can use the ASNT NDT Level III exam preparation. Companies that need a written practice or UT procedures can use UT Level III consulting in Houston.

If you need UT done. The national service is on ultrasonic testing. Weld coverage by phased array in the city is on PAUT inspection in Houston, line surveys on piping inspection in Houston, and every Houston service on inspection services in Houston. Send scopes through the Houston UT inspection enquiry. Training questions go to the Houston UT training enquiry.
