Magnetic Flux Leakage Testing (MFL) Services in Tampa 2026 — Atlantis NDT
Atlantis NDT delivers Magnetic Flux Leakage Testing (MFL) services in Tampa. ASNT NDT Level III-led. Technicians are certified by their employer to its SNT-TC-1A written practice, and procedures and reports are reviewed by an ASNT NDT Level III (UT, RT, MT, PT, VT). Where we work: nationwide. Technicians are mobilised to your site anywhere in the USA; apart from the Houston office there is no local office, so mobilisation is planned and quoted for each job.
MFL Method Overview
Magnetic Flux Leakage Testing (MFL) is an advanced NDT technique. Atlantis NDT Level III approves the Procedure + signs off final disposition. Calibration block + reference standards traceable to NIST/NPL/PTB. Per ASME Section V applicable Article + ASTM E-series + ISO 17635/17636/17640. Atlantis NDT integrates MFL data into Digital Twin platform 3D defect overlay.
Code + Compliance in Tampa
MFL delivery aligns with: ASME B&PV V + VIII + IX; ASME B31 piping; API 510 + 570 + 571 + 579 + 580 + 581 + 653; ASTM E-series; ISO 17635/17636/17640; NACE MR0175/MR0103; AWS D1.1/3.6; IACS Rec-20. Records are kept in Atlantis NDT ERP.

How Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) works
MFL saturates a ferromagnetic wall with a magnetic field; where metal is missing, flux leaks out of the wall and is detected by sensors passing over the surface. It scans large ferrous areas quickly, which is why it dominates storage tank floor screening and in-line pipeline inspection.
What it detects
- Tank floor corrosion and pitting from both the product side and the soil side, at scanning speeds no point-by-point method can match
- Pipeline wall loss during in-line inspection runs, with axial and circumferential field variants suited to different defect orientations
- Under-deposit and soil-side corrosion that visual examination cannot see
- General wall loss across large ferrous plate areas for screening before detailed UT
What it will not do
MFL is a screening method whose sizing accuracy depends on wall thickness, coating thickness, defect geometry and scanning speed. Indications are confirmed and sized by ultrasonic prove-up. It also degrades on thick walls, on heavily coated surfaces, and on non-ferrous materials where it does not work at all.
When Magnetic Flux Leakage (MFL) is the right choice
Choose MFL to screen large ferrous areas fast — tank floors before an internal inspection scope is set, or pipeline runs where in-line inspection is available — then size with UT what MFL finds.
Codes and acceptance criteria
Examinations are performed to written procedures qualified against API 653 for aboveground storage tank inspection including floor evaluation, API 570 and ASME B31.8S for pipeline integrity assessment, ASTM E570 for flux leakage examination of ferromagnetic tubing, and POF specifications for in-line inspection performance. Acceptance criteria come from the construction or in-service code governing the item — ASME Section VIII for pressure vessels, ASME B31.3 for process piping, API 510, API 570 and API 653 in service, AWS D1.1 for structural steel — and the applicable edition is recorded against the examination so the disposition can be reconstructed later.
Tampa context
Work in Tampa is scoped around the asset classes and access constraints of the local industrial base, the client's own vendor-approval regime, and the inspection intervals set by the governing in-service code. Mobilisation, permit and access planning are agreed before the crew travels, because on most sites those are the constraints that decide the cost of the campaign rather than the examination itself.
How the examination is controlled
Agree personnel qualification, equipment checks, procedure revision and review responsibilities for the examination. Retain those records with the results and coverage limitations.
What you receive
- A report in your required format, with indications located against the component and, where relevant, against a persistent corrosion monitoring location so trends stay continuous between campaigns
- Raw data files in the instrument-native format plus an open export, so the dataset outlives any single supplier relationship
- The procedure revision, technician certification state and instrument calibration status applicable at the time of examination
- Where a finding affects continued service, a clear statement of the code clause that governs the acceptance decision

MFL tank floor scanning in Tampa: terminal tank farms, sulfur storage and API 653 floor data
In Tampa, MFL is used mainly to scan the floors of aboveground storage tanks at the fuel terminals on Port Tampa Bay, which handle nearly half of Florida's petroleum supply. Each scan happens when the tank is out of service, cleaned and open for its API 653 internal inspection. Indications are then sized by ultrasonic prove-up. Atlantis is Houston-based and sends scanning crews to the site.
The tank population. Florida has no refineries, so the tanks around the bay hold imported product for distribution. Kinder Morgan's main Tampa terminal has 31 tanks of 9,500 to 120,000 barrels. They hold:
- gasoline blendstock and premium gasoline;
- ultra-low sulfur diesel;
- jet fuel;
- ethanol and biodiesel.
Buckeye, Global Partners, Chevron and Citgo run further terminals nearby. Floor problems depend on the product and the foundation. On the product side, water collecting in the tank bottom can lead to pitting and microbial corrosion. On the soil side, corrosion develops wherever the cathodic protection or the pad drainage has fallen behind.
What a floor scan delivers. An MFL scanner covers the main floor plate quickly and flags metal loss on the top and the underside of the plate for UT follow-up. Scanners cannot work right up against the shell, so the critical zone next to the shell and the annular ring are finished with hand UT. The deliverable is a floor map with the remaining thickness at each confirmed indication. The owner's API 653 inspector uses it to set the next internal interval and to decide between repairs, patch plates and a new bottom. Atlantis supplies the scan, the prove-up and the data, and it does not act as the API 653 inspector of record.
Getting usable data from one entry. Floor results depend on how well the tank was prepared. Product, sludge and scale left on the plate reduce sensitivity. Lap welds, patch plates and sumps leave areas the scanner cannot cover, and those areas are marked on the map rather than reported as clean. When a tank has had a coated bottom or a second bottom installed, tell the crew before mobilization, because both change the scanner setup and what the readings mean.
Sulfur and process tanks. Outside the fuel terminals, Mosaic's Riverview plant stores and handles molten sulfur for its three sulfuric acid plants. A heated tank of that kind is costly to empty and clean, so a single entry has to answer as much as possible. Scope the MFL floor scan, the UT prove-up and the shell thickness readings together. That way the owner does not have to open the tank again for data that was missed.
Timing in Tampa. A terminal tank out of service has to be covered by other tanks in the same product while fuel keeps moving inland by pipeline and truck. Book the scanning crew for the date the tank will be clean and gas-free, not for the start of the outage, to avoid standby time. Leave slack in the plan for the June to November hurricane season. In October 2024, Kinder Morgan shut its Tampa terminals ahead of Hurricane Milton.
Next steps. MFL tank floor inspection explains the method and the report. Aboveground storage tank inspection covers the full tank scope. API 653 tank NDE support sets out what Atlantis does, and does not do, within the owner's program. Tank inspection in Tampa is the local page. Send the tank list and outage dates.
