Dead Zone

The dead zone is the region immediately below the surface where ultrasonic flaws cannot be detected because the initial pulse and surface echo mask any signal; minimized by using delay lines, dual-element probes, or higher-frequency probes.

Definition

The dead zone is the depth range near the entry surface in which flaw echoes are obscured by the transmit pulse ring-down and the front-surface echo. Its extent depends on probe damping, frequency, and pulse length.

Technical Context

For near-surface inspection, dual-element probes or delay-line probes virtually eliminate the dead zone.
