ASME B31.3 Process Piping is the dominant process-piping code globally for refining, petrochemical, chemical, fine chemical, pharmaceutical, semiconductor, pulp & paper, and cryogenic facilities. It governs the design, materials, fabrication, examination, testing, and inspection of metallic + nonmetallic piping carrying hydrocarbons, hazardous fluids, utility fluids, and process chemicals. B31.3 is referenced by OSHA PSM (29 CFR 1910.119), EPA RMP, API 570 Piping Inspector in-service inspection, and dozens of jurisdictional + EPC contract specs.

Scope and Fluid Service Categories — § 300.2 + § F300

B31.3 § 300 categorises piping by fluid service, each with different design + NDT requirements:

  • Normal Fluid Service: the default — most refinery and chemical-plant process piping fits here. 5 % random RT or UT on butt welds; visual + MT/PT root + cap; standard acceptance.

  • Severe Cyclic Service (§ 300.2): design conditions per § 302.3.5 — stress range > 0.8 × allowable for > 7,000 cycles design life. Same NDT as Category M plus fatigue-design check.
  • High Pressure Fluid Service (Category K): design pressure ≥ 15,000 psig (1,034 bar). Special Chapter IX rules — every weld 100 % RT/UT, every weld PT root + cap, hydrotest pressure 1.5 × design, strict material traceability.

Allowable Stress and Wall-Thickness Calc — § 304

Required wall thickness t = PD / (2(SE + PY)), same form as B31.1 but with B31.3's allowable stress table (ASME Section II Part D — Table 1A for ferrous, 1B for nonferrous).
