What weld inspection involves
Weld inspection verifies that a joint meets the acceptance criteria of the governing construction code, using methods selected for the defect types credible in that joint configuration and material.
Scope of work
- Visual examination of profile, undercut, reinforcement and surface condition to a written procedure
- Radiography or ultrasonic examination of weld volume, including phased array and TOFD on thicker sections
- Magnetic particle or penetrant examination for surface-breaking indications
- Welder and procedure qualification record verification against ASME Section IX
- Positive material identification where material substitution is a risk
Governing codes
ASME Section VIII and Section IX, ASME B31.1 and B31.3, AWS D1.1, API 1104, and ASME Section V for the examination methods themselves.
Working in Tampa
Scope in Tampa is set by the local asset base, the client's own vendor-approval regime and the inspection intervals required by the governing in-service code. Mobilisation, permit and access planning are agreed before the crew travels, because on most sites those constraints decide the cost of a campaign more than the examination itself does.
How the work is controlled
Agree personnel qualification, equipment checks, procedure revision and review responsibilities for the examination. Retain those records with the results and coverage limitations.
What you receive
- A report in your required format, with findings located against the component and, where relevant, against a persistent corrosion monitoring location so trends stay continuous between campaigns
- Raw data in the instrument-native format plus an open export, so the dataset outlives any single supplier relationship
- The procedure revision, technician certification state and instrument calibration status applicable at the time of examination
- Where a finding affects continued service, the specific code clause governing the acceptance decision

Third-party weld inspection in Tampa: ship repair yards, fuel terminals and plant piping
Third-party weld inspection in Tampa is needed mainly in three places: ship repair and conversion at the Port Tampa Bay yards, tank and piping repairs at the fuel terminals on the bay, and pressure piping at the power and fertilizer plants. Atlantis is Houston-based. It mobilizes technicians for each job, and every procedure and report passes review by an ASNT NDT Level III.
Marine weld inspection at the Tampa yards. Edison Chouest Offshore owns the Tampa Ship yard at Hookers Point, which has graving docks and a covered erection building and has built offshore supply vessels and harbor tugs. Gulf Marine Repair, part of Hendry Marine Industries, works on repair, conversion and modification of tugs, barges, articulated tug-barge units, dredges and government vessels. Hendry Corporation lifts tugs and barges on its 2,500-ton drydock at Port Hendry. In August 2026 the US Department of Transportation announced a Maritime Administration Small Shipyard Grant for Gulf Marine Repair. It pays for a welder training program and equipment upgrades, so the amount of welding on this waterfront is set to grow.
Marine weld acceptance comes from the classification society's rules and the vessel owner's specification. For piping, boilers and pressure vessels on inspected US-flag vessels, the Coast Guard's welding and brazing rules in 46 CFR Part 57 also apply. A typical marine scope is:
- visual and magnetic particle examination of structural fillet welds;
- ultrasonic examination of butt welds in hull plate;
- radiography or ultrasonics of piping butt welds where the specification calls for volumetric coverage.
Gulf Marine Repair lists 6GR carbon steel and stainless pipe qualifications among its welder certifications. Under ASME Section IX, welder test coupons like these can often be examined by radiography in place of bend tests.
Terminal tanks and transfer piping. Argus reports that nearly half of Florida's petroleum supply passes through Port Tampa Bay, and Florida has no refinery of its own. Kinder Morgan, Buckeye, Global Partners, Chevron and Citgo all run terminals here. Kinder Morgan's Central Florida Pipeline carries product inland to Orlando. On these sites, weld inspection covers:
- shell and bottom repair welds under API 653;
- welds on new tanks under API 650;
- girth welds on pipeline tie-ins, examined to API 1104 within the operator's 49 CFR Part 195 program.
Power and fertilizer plants. Tampa Electric's Big Bend station at Apollo Beach was rebuilt as a 2x2x1 combined-cycle plant with two heat recovery steam generators. It entered commercial operation in 2023, and its power piping is built and repaired under ASME B31.1. Mosaic's Riverview phosphate complex, with its sulfuric and phosphoric acid units, is a source of alloy piping repairs. Those repairs pair penetrant examination with positive material identification, on top of any volumetric examination the code requires.
Who signs what in Florida. Chapter 554 of the Florida Statutes, the state boiler law, applies its inspection requirements only to boilers in public assembly locations. Industrial pressure equipment around Tampa therefore relies on the owner's program, the insurer and the construction code. When a repair is made under the NBIC, the repair organization and its Authorized Inspector own the sign-off. Atlantis performs the NDE and writes the report, and it never signs as inspector of record. Florida is an NRC Agreement State. Weld radiography therefore needs a radioactive-materials license from the Bureau of Radiation Control at the Florida Department of Health, and the radiography arrangements are confirmed for each job.
Next steps. The methods and deliverables are on weld inspection services across the US. Phased array inspection covers thick butt welds, and tank inspection in Tampa covers terminal work. Yards that need written NDT procedures, or a Level III to approve them, can use NDT procedure development. Send the Tampa weld scope with the drawings, the governing code and the access dates, and the quote is prepared from that.
