Guided Wave Testing (GWT)

Guided Wave Testing uses low-frequency (20–100 kHz) ultrasonic waves that propagate along a pipe wall for tens of meters from a single transducer ring, enabling rapid screening of long, inaccessible, or buried piping for corrosion.

Definition

Guided Wave Testing (GWT, also LRUT — Long-Range Ultrasonic Testing) uses low-frequency torsional or longitudinal Lamb-type waves launched by a clamp-on transducer ring. The waves propagate along the pipe and reflect from features such as welds, supports, and corrosion.

Technical Context

Typical inspection range is 30–60 m on each side of the ring, depending on coating, soil contact, and weld density. GWT is a screening tool, not a sizing tool: anomalies must be confirmed with conventional UT.

  • Insulated piping (CUI screening)
  • Buried, road-crossing, and pipe-rack inspection
  • Refinery piping baseline surveys
