Visual Testing (VT)
Visual Testing (VT) is the most basic NDT method, using direct or remote optical observation — sometimes aided by mirrors, borescopes, or cameras — to identify surface defects, geometric anomalies, and condition of components.
Definition
Visual Testing (VT) is the inspection of a component using direct line-of-sight observation, optionally aided by magnifiers, mirrors, borescopes, drones, or remote video systems. Despite its simplicity, VT is the foundational NDT method and is required before any other inspection. ASME Section V recognizes VT-1, VT-2, and VT-3 levels with distinct objectives.
Technical Context
Illumination must meet the minimum required level (typically 1000 lux for direct VT), and inspectors must pass a Jaeger J1 or J2 near-vision test plus a color vision test. Remote VT (RVT) uses borescopes, fiberscopes, or video probes for internal inspection of pipes, turbines, and pressure vessels.

How it works
Direct or aided observation of a surface under controlled conditions of light, angle and distance. It is the oldest method and the only one applied to essentially every component, usually before any other examination is considered.
What it finds
Surface condition of every kind — weld profile, undercut, overlap, arc strikes, misalignment, corrosion, mechanical damage, coating failure, leakage evidence — plus everything that determines whether other methods can even be applied.
What it will not find
Anything beneath the surface, and anything the eye cannot resolve at the specified distance and lighting. Tight cracks may be entirely invisible without a surface method to open them up to view.
How it is actually done
Codes make visual examination a measurable activity rather than a glance: minimum illumination at the surface, maximum viewing distance, maximum angle from perpendicular, and demonstrated visual acuity of the examiner, re-tested at defined intervals.

ASME Section V Article 9 covers visual examination; AWS D1.1 sets visual acceptance criteria for structural welds; API 653 and API 510 define visual requirements in tank and vessel inspection.
Where it goes wrong
Treating it as the method that needs no procedure. Visual examination fails audits more often than any other method precisely because illumination, distance and acuity records are missing — the requirements are explicit and easy to evidence, which is why their absence is noticed.
