Eddy Current Testing (ET) Services in Houston 2026 — ASNT Level III Led

Atlantis NDT delivers professional Eddy Current Testing (ET) inspection services in Houston from ASNT NDT Level II + III certified inspectors. Specialising in heat exchanger tube inspection, surface crack detection and conductivity testing. ET demand around Houston comes mainly from oil & gas, petrochemical & refining. Technicians are qualified to the governing SNT-TC-1A written practice, and procedures and reports are reviewed by an ASNT NDT Level III (UT, RT, MT, PT, VT). Where we work: nationwide. Technicians are mobilised to your site anywhere in the USA; apart from the Houston office there is no local office, so mobilisation is planned and quoted for each job.

Eddy Current Testing Method Overview

Eddy Current Testing (ET) is a core NDT method covered in detail at our ET pillar hub. Per ASME Section V, ASTM E-series, ISO 17635 + applicable method-specific standard. Atlantis NDT Level III approves every Procedure + signs off final disposition. Calibration block + reference standard traceable to NIST / NPL / PTB. Procedure pack + technique sheet + qualification block included.

Eddy current testing in Houston: what the work actually is

Houston is the densest NDT services market in North America — the ship channel refineries and chemical complexes from Pasadena to Baytown, the upstream and midstream head offices that buy inspection nationally, and a fabrication belt building pressure vessels and offshore modules.

ET runs the exchanger bundles at every major turnaround, screening thousands of non-ferrous tubes inside the shutdown window and prosecuting the indications that decide whether a bundle is retubed or returned to service.

What governs acceptance here

API 510, 570 and 653 govern in-service inspection of vessels, piping and tanks; ASME Section V supplies the methods and Section VIII and B31.3 the acceptance; operator contractor-approval gates site access on top of SNT-TC-1A certification. An examination that is technically sound but performed outside the governing regime is not an examination anyone will accept — which is why the code family matters as much as the technique in Houston.

How Atlantis delivers ET in Houston

Teams are mobilised to your site under Atlantis procedures with ASNT Level III oversight — we do not claim a depot or laboratory in Houston, and say so plainly. What you receive is the examination performed to a qualified procedure, findings evaluated against the acceptance criteria your contract names, and records structured to survive a client audit years later. Scope a ET examination · Eddy current testing services · ET training and certification.

Houston scopes are quoted from the national eddy current testing service: bobbin, array and rotating-probe tube inspection plus surface examination on non-ferrous and coated components.

Eddy current testing in Houston: exchanger bundles, power plant condensers and coated welds

In Houston, eddy current testing is mostly tube inspection. It covers exchanger bundles in the ship channel refineries and chemical plants, and condensers and feedwater heaters in the region's power stations. Surface eddy current and ACFM also find weld cracks on marine and offshore steel without removing the coating. Atlantis, headquartered in Houston, brings ET crews and probe sets for each turnaround or outage.

Refinery and chemical exchanger work. A large ship channel refinery, such as ExxonMobil's 588,000 barrel-a-day Baytown plant or Pemex's Deer Park refinery, pulls many bundles in each turnaround. Tube inspection is often on the critical path. Bobbin probes screen copper alloy, stainless and titanium tubes for pitting, baffle wear and general thinning. Array or motorized rotating probes then characterize the tubes that will be plugged or decide whether a bundle is retubed. The plant's inspection group sets the plugging criteria. The ET report has to show the tube map, the calibration standard and the probe fill factor, so the plugging decision can be traced back to the data.

Carbon steel bundles and fin-fans. Many Gulf Coast plants use carbon steel exchanger tubes and air-cooled fin-fan units. Conventional eddy current is weak on ferromagnetic tubing, so those are usually scoped for IRIS. Each bundle's method is settled from the tube material list before the turnaround starts, not on the day the bundle is pulled.

Power station condensers. NRG's W.A. Parish Generating Station, near Thompsons in Fort Bend County, has about 3,650 MW of coal and gas units and is one of the largest conventional power plants in the country. Other stations around Houston add more condensers and feedwater heaters. Their tubes are screened with eddy current during planned outages, which Texas generators usually schedule away from the summer peak. A full-bundle survey trended against earlier campaigns shows whether tube damage is accelerating.

Coated welds on marine and offshore steel. Houston-managed offshore topsides, crane pedestals and ship channel dock structures have weld toes that need crack checks under the paint. Weld-probe eddy current and ACFM inspection find surface-breaking cracks through coatings, so the steel is not left bare in humid Gulf air.

  • Non-ferrous exchanger tubes: bobbin screening, array or rotating-probe sizing
  • Carbon steel and fin-fan tubing: IRIS instead of conventional eddy current
  • Condensers and feedwater heaters: outage campaigns trended year on year
  • Coated weld toes: crack detection without coating removal

Where to go. The national service is set out on eddy current testing. Turnaround scopes are planned through turnaround and shutdown inspection, and plant-specific context is on power generation NDT in Houston and inspection services in Houston. Tube inspection results can be issued as signed reports through the ERP reports app. For ET technician training, see eddy current training. Send the bundle list and tube materials through the Houston ET enquiry.
