'Better ROI' is a signature question

API 577 certifies knowledge of welding inspection and metallurgy against API RP 577 — 110 closed-book questions, of which 100 are scored, in 3.25 hours, offered at test centers or by remote proctoring. At $380 for API members and $440 for non-members, with recertification at $265/$320 on a three-year term, it is the cheapest credential on this page by a factor of three. What it does not do is authorize anyone to accept a weld, release a repair or sign an inspection report.
Its leverage is positional. Inspectors holding current API 510, 570 or 653 certifications qualify for the 577 exam automatically, and for plant-inspection firms the endorsement deepens the weld-repair competence those authorized inspectors already sign under. For everyone else, entry runs from one year of petrochemical experience with an engineering degree to five years with no degree. On a refinery turnaround bid, 577 on the org chart reads as welding depth; on a structural bid it reads as nothing, because D1.1 work asks for the CWI.
NDT Level II: the self-perform revenue play
An employer-certified NDT Level II converts subcontracted inspection line items into self-performed scope. Prerequisites: who can sit tomorrow
CWI entry is the steepest. AWS scales required welding-related experience against education: one year with a bachelor's in welding engineering, three with engineering coursework toward a degree, five with a high-school diploma, out to twelve with less than an eighth-grade education — and welding-related work explicitly includes NDT performed on welded products, which is how NDT technicians qualify. API 577 asks for petrochemical-industry experience on a shallower slope — one year with a BS in engineering or technology, two with a two-year technical degree, three with a high-school diploma, five with no formal education — and waives all of it for current API 510/570/653 holders. Employer-based Level II has no biographical entry bar at all: any trainee the employer accepts starts logging training and experience hours immediately, which makes it the only credential of the three a firm can begin building today with the workforce it already has.
