- Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Radiographic Testing (RT), and Eddy Current Testing (ET) — each 40 classroom hours, 210 on-the-job experience hours. Longer to reach Level I, and more equipment- and physics-intensive to learn.
If your priority is simply getting certified in something as fast as possible — to open the first door into the industry — PT or VT is the objectively fastest path by the numbers.
Which Method Has the Broadest Industry Demand
Training speed isn't the only consideration, though — you also want to know which method gives you the most consistent work once you're certified. Visual Testing is genuinely foundational: it's usually the very first certification a new technician earns, because every other method builds on top of a solid VT foundation, and it's used across every industry that touches NDT at all. But for depth of ongoing demand specifically, Ultrasonic Testing tends to carry the strongest and most consistent pull across industries — it's the workhorse method for wall-thickness and corrosion monitoring in oil & gas and petrochemical work (the largest single employer of NDT technicians), and it shows up heavily in aerospace, power generation, and manufacturing as well. That's why many technicians who start with an accessible method like PT or VT prioritize adding UT next, once they have a foundation certification and some field experience under their belt.
Which Method Is Hardest to Learn First
Difficulty and training hours track each other fairly closely, but not perfectly. Ultrasonic Testing and Radiographic Testing are generally considered the steepest learning curves for a total beginner: UT requires building real intuition for how sound waves behave and reflect inside a material, which takes hands-on repetition to internalize, and RT carries the added layer of radiation safety procedures on top of image interpretation. Eddy Current Testing sits in a similar category — understanding how induced currents respond to material changes isn't intuitive on day one. By contrast, Liquid Penetrant, Visual, and Magnetic Particle testing are more procedural and visually direct: you apply a process and look for a visible indication, which is a more learnable starting point for someone with zero prior technical background. - Want the fastest realistic entry into a paying NDT role? Start with PT, VT, or MT — short classroom hours, direct visual interpretation, lower equipment complexity.
- Already have an employer or industry in mind that runs mostly one method? Match your first certification to what that employer actually needs — a company doing pipeline thickness monitoring wants UT technicians, not PT specialists, regardless of which method is "easier" in the abstract.
- Optimizing for long-term demand across the widest range of industries? Plan to add Ultrasonic Testing early in your career, even if you start somewhere else first — it's the method with the broadest pull across oil & gas, aerospace, power, and manufacturing.
- Not sure yet and just want a foundation? Visual Testing is the closest thing NDT has to a universal starting certification, and it's rarely wasted effort since every other method assumes VT-level inspection habits anyway.
