The OJT Hour Log That Survives an Audit — and the One That Doesn't
OJT hours are supervised, hands-on time performing the method — setup, calibration, scanning, interpretation and reporting — not classroom study or site standby. A compliant log entry records date, hours, method and technique, equipment, the part and procedure, the activity performed, and a certified Level II or III supervisor's signature. Undocumented hours can be reconstructed through inspection reports, job travelers and a signed employer attestation.
OJT hours are the documented, supervised, hands-on portion of NDT qualification — the number SNT-TC-1A, CP-189, NAS 410 and ISO 9712 all demand before certification, and the number candidates most often cannot prove. Creditable time covers surface preparation, equipment setup, calibration, data acquisition, evaluation against acceptance criteria and report writing performed under a certified Level II or III. Classroom and e-learning hours count as training, never experience; standby time counts as nothing. A defensible log entry carries date, hours, method, technique, equipment ID, part and procedure reference, the activity performed, and the supervisor's signature and certification level. When years went unlogged, hours are rebuilt from inspection reports, job travelers and timesheets, then bound by a signed employer attestation a Level III reviews and accepts. The silent gap that stalls Level III candidacies
ASNT's Level III eligibility is arithmetic: one year of Level II-comparable NDT experience with a four-year engineering or physical-science degree, two years with two academic years of study, four years with neither — and every month of it must be certified by an employer on the application. Candidates rarely fail the arithmetic. They fail the evidence, because the hours were worked across three employers and logged contemporaneously by none of them.
The same file gates every scheme below Level III. SNT-TC-1A's experience tables, CP-189's mandatory equivalents, NAS 410's per-method hour counts and ISO 9712's employer-verified experience all assume a contemporaneous record exists. When it does not, certification stalls — not because the candidate lacks competence, but because nobody can prove where the hours came from. What counts as OJT — and what never does
Creditable experience is hands-on performance of the method under qualified supervision: surface preparation and part setup, instrument calibration and standardization, data acquisition and scanning, evaluation of indications against acceptance criteria, and writing or assisting with the resulting report. Time spent performing NDT on production hardware carries the most audit weight, and written practices commonly recognize supervised mock-up and laboratory work as a defined share of the total.
Four categories never count as experience. Classroom and e-learning time is training — a separate table with separate hours. Standby, travel and site-induction time is nothing, even on an inspection contract. Unsupervised practice by an uncertified trainee fails the supervision requirement. And general QC duties — dimensional checks, document review, paint inspection — sit outside the method regardless of who performed them. Logs padded with these categories are the ones auditors unravel first.
SNT-TC-1A 2024 formalized one useful credit: a new paragraph 6.4 recognizes a percentage of direct practical laboratory experience against the extended experience recommendations in its tables. That is a written-practice decision, not an automatic entitlement — the employer's document must adopt it and define the percentage before anyone claims it. Candidates working under older written practices gain nothing from the 2024 text until the employer revises and reissues its document.
Anatomy of a log entry that survives audit
A defensible entry answers five questions without a follow-up phone call: when, what method, on what equipment and part, doing what, witnessed by whom. The table on this page shows the seven fields that answer them, with copy-ready examples. Every field ties the entry to a record an auditor can independently pull — a calibration certificate, a work order, a controlled procedure — and that traceability is what separates evidence from assertion.
Granularity matters as much as content. Same-day or same-week entries in mixed handwriting or timestamped software carry credibility that a single neat month-end page never will. Round-number streaks — eight hours of UT, every day, for a year — invite exactly the scrutiny they deserve. Log the real number, including the 2.5-hour days, and the file reads like what it is: a contemporaneous record of a working technician rather than a reverse-engineered total.
Who signs, and what the signature asserts
The supervising signature belongs to the certified individual who directed the work — a Level II or Level III in the same method, identified by name and certification level. That signature asserts three things: the activity happened, the hours are accurate, and the trainee worked under qualified direction. A quality manager's countersignature can close the employer's record, but it cannot substitute for method supervision the manager is not certified to provide.
The candidate signs too, and the dual signature makes retroactive falsification uncomfortable in both directions. At certification time, the employer's Level III totals the log against the written-practice table and accepts or rejects it. Under NAS 410 that acceptance happens progressively, because the specific exam is administered only after 75% of required hours are logged and the practical only after 100%. An unsigned log delays exams, which delays certification, which delays billable capability.
Scheme by scheme: where the rules diverge
SNT-TC-1A leaves log format entirely to the written practice — the tables set the hours (70 experience hours for PT Level I, 210 for UT Level I, 630 more for UT Level II) and the employer defines the record. NAS 410 is the strictest in practice because of its exam-sequencing rule: with the specific exam gated at 75% of hours and the practical at 100%, the log has to be current before anything can be scheduled. ISO 9712 differs in structure — a central certification body certifies, but the employer still attests documented experience, and gaps surface at application review rather than internal audit. Reconciling one log to several schemes at once is routine Level III consulting work.
Rebuilding undocumented hours: the attestation path
Reconstruction starts with objective artifacts, not memory: inspection reports bearing the candidate's name or stamp, job travelers and work orders, daily timesheets, contract assignment records, prior certificates. Each artifact anchors a period and a method. From those anchors, a defensible hour estimate is built period by period — conservative, method-split, and explicitly labeled as reconstruction rather than contemporaneous logging. The moment an estimate outruns its artifacts, the file stops being evidence and becomes a liability.
The binding document is an employer attestation: a letter on company letterhead, signed by the supervising Level III or the responsible quality authority of that era, stating employment dates, methods practiced, the basis for the hour estimate and the records consulted. The current employer's Level III then reviews the attestation, accepts it into the certification file, and notes the acceptance in the written-practice records. For ASNT Level III applications, the employer's certification of experience on the application form performs the same function and carries the same personal accountability.
When a former employer no longer exists, the fallback hierarchy is: records the candidate lawfully retained, attestation from a former supervisor as an individual with their certification history stated, and client-side records from facilities where the work was performed. A Level III weighing such a file documents the rationale for acceptance. What no scheme accepts is a self-declaration with no corroborating artifact — that is the file that ends candidacies.
Multi-method shifts and split hours
Technicians run two methods on one shift constantly — MT and PT on the same weld, UT thickness checks after visual. Hours split; they do not double. A ten-hour shift yields ten hours of experience allocated across methods in the proportion actually worked, and the log entry shows the split explicitly. Written practices that adopt concurrent multi-method experience provisions define the allocation rule; the log's job is to make that allocation auditable line by line.
The total-NDT column catches what method splitting misses. SNT-TC-1A requires both in-method hours and total NDT hours — 400 total for PT certification, 1,600 for UT — so hours worked in any method still advance the total column for every method. A candidate strong in one method and thin in the total column has a different gap than one short in-method, and the log must be structured to report both numbers on demand.

What activities count toward NDT OJT experience hours?

Does classroom or online training count as experience?
No. Training hours and experience hours are separate tables in every scheme — SNT-TC-1A, CP-189, NAS 410 and ISO 9712 list them independently, and an hour sits in only one column. Who is qualified to sign an OJT log entry?
The certified Level II or Level III who supervised the work, in the same method, identified by name and certification level. The signature asserts that the activity occurred, the hours are accurate and the supervision was qualified. A quality manager without method certification can countersign employment facts but cannot validate method supervision. The candidate signs each entry as well.
How many experience hours does SNT-TC-1A recommend per method?
In-method: PT 70 hours for Level I plus 140 for Level II; MT 70 plus 210; UT, RT and ET 210 plus 630 each; VT 70 plus 140. On top of these sit total-NDT-hour requirements: 400 for PT and VT, 530 for MT, and 1,600 for UT, RT and ET (SNT-TC-1A 2020, Table 6.3.1A).
Can undocumented hours from a previous employer be recovered?
Yes, through reconstruction: gather inspection reports, travelers and timesheets that anchor the period, build a conservative method-split estimate, and bind it with a signed attestation from that employer's Level III or quality authority. The current program's Level III reviews and accepts the package into the certification file. Self-declared hours with no corroborating artifact are rejected across every scheme.
What does NAS 410 require of the log before exams?
Currency. NAS 410 administers the specific examination only after at least 75% of required experience hours are logged and the practical examination only after 100%, so exam scheduling is blocked until the signed log proves the threshold. That sequencing makes month-end batch logging an operational problem on aerospace programs, not just an audit-day one.
