The Real Trend: AI as a Drafting Assistant, Not a Procedure Author of Record

Writing an NDT procedure — a formal document specifying scope, applicable codes, personnel qualifications, equipment, calibration, technique, acceptance criteria, and reporting requirements per ASME Section V Article 1 — is slow, detail-heavy work. It means cross-referencing construction codes (ASME B31.3, B31.4, Section VIII) against the method-specific NDE article, checking client specification overlays (an operator's own SAEP or DEP document), and drafting technique sheets for every weld configuration or component geometry involved. It is exactly the kind of structured, reference-heavy drafting task that large language models are genuinely useful for as a starting point — which is why AI-assisted procedure drafting has become a real, growing practice across the inspection industry, not a hypothetical one.

The honest framing matters here: AI helps a Level III or procedure writer move faster through the drafting process. It does not write an approved, qualified procedure on its own, and no current certification scheme or code lets it try.

What Still Has to Come From a Qualified Person

SNT-TC-1A and ASME Section IX both draw a hard line here: a procedure isn't usable on a job until a qualified person has reviewed, qualified, and approved it. For NDT procedures, that means an NDT Level III review and approval.
