NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in the UAE

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and the United Arab Emirates is a natural home for it. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator is an immersive, 3D, game-like platform that runs in a browser or app. A technician opens a job in a virtual NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site or full-size storage tank, sets up the technique, inspects, records the result and gets a score the moment the job closes. UAE inspection work is unusually broad for its size: Abu Dhabi's onshore and offshore oil and gas, the gas processing and refining complexes at Habshan, Das Island and Ruwais, the Barakah nuclear power plant, one of the world's largest oil storage and bunkering hubs at Fujairah, shipyards and offshore fabrication yards in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, two of the busiest aviation hubs anywhere, and a construction sector that never stops. Crews are multinational, mobile and frequently asked to prove competence before they reach site.

This page is the UAE hub for Practical NDT. It maps where the country's NDT work is emirate by emirate, which simulator environments match each cluster, how practice sits alongside the ASNT SNT-TC-1A and ISO 9712 certification UAE employers ask for, which regulators matter, and how to arrange a demo. City pages for Abu Dhabi and Dubai have more detail.

Where the UAE's NDT work is, emirate by emirate

Short answer: UAE NDT demand clusters in five places: Abu Dhabi's upstream, gas and refining assets from offshore fields to Ruwais; the Barakah nuclear plant in Al Dhafra; Dubai's port, dry-dock, aviation and construction base; Sharjah and the northern emirates' fabrication yards; and Fujairah's storage terminals on the east coast. Each relies on a different mix of methods.

Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi holds most of the country's oil and gas. Offshore fields in the Arabian Gulf are produced through platforms, artificial islands and processing at Das Island and Zirku, while onshore fields feed large gas processing at Habshan and Bab. The Ruwais industrial complex in Al Dhafra combines one of the region's largest refineries with petrochemical and fertiliser plants. Abu Dhabi city, Mussafah and the Khalifa Industrial Zone near Khalifa Port host most of the emirate's inspection companies, laboratories, fabrication yards and offshore construction bases. Corrosion monitoring, weld inspection on new construction and modifications, and turnaround inspection of exchangers, vessels and piping run all year.

Al Dhafra and Barakah. The Barakah nuclear power plant is the Arab world's first commercial nuclear station. Nuclear plants have their own qualified inspection programmes and strict personnel requirements, but they also widen the local pool of technicians trained in volumetric weld inspection and in-service inspection practice.

Dubai. Jebel Ali is the region's largest port and free zone, with heavy fabrication, fuel terminals and storage, power and desalination at Jebel Ali, and an aluminium smelter. The Dubai dry docks and maritime city handle ship repair, conversion and offshore construction. Dubai International and Al Maktoum airports support a very large airline engineering and MRO operation. Construction across the emirate adds structural steel, pipelines and building services inspection.

Sharjah and the northern emirates. Hamriyah Free Zone and the industrial areas of Sharjah, Ajman and Ras Al Khaimah host many fabrication yards, pipe and vessel manufacturers, offshore and marine contractors and cement and industrial plants. Ras Al Khaimah has further ports and manufacturing.

Fujairah. On the Gulf of Oman, outside the Strait of Hormuz, Fujairah has grown into a major oil storage and bunkering hub, with large tank farms, jetties and a terminal for crude arriving by pipeline from Abu Dhabi's fields. Tank inspection, floor screening, shell thickness surveys and pipeline work dominate there.

Practical NDT across UAE cities and emirates

Short answer: Abu Dhabi and Dubai already have their own Practical NDT pages. The table below covers those and the other main UAE clusters, with the simulator environments and methods that match the work. Every user can open every environment; the table shows where to start.

Abu Dhabi technicians move between offshore facilities, onshore plants and the fabrication yards of Mussafah and the Khalifa industrial area. Corrosion mapping and LRUT screening in the Oil & Gas Site environment, and PAUT and TOFD weld inspection in the Welding Workshop, cover most of their work. Abu Dhabi employers can also use ASNT training in Abu Dhabi and Level III consulting in Abu Dhabi.

Ruwais turnarounds are dominated by exchangers, columns, reactors and alloy piping. IRIS on exchanger tubes, ET on non-ferrous tubes and PMI on alloy lines are the methods technicians most often feel unpractised in, and all three are in the Oil & Gas Site environment, which has 73 jobs. See ASNT training in Ruwais.

Dubai crews cover a wider mix than anywhere else in the country: ship repair and offshore conversion welds at the dry docks, tank and terminal surveys at Jebel Ali, boiler and condenser work at power and desalination plants, and airline maintenance. The Welding Workshop, Storage Tank and Aircraft Hangar environments all apply. See ASNT training in Dubai and consulting in Dubai.

Sharjah and Hamriyah fabrication yards build vessels, spools, skids and offshore structures, often to ASME and AWS codes for export. Weld inspection with PAUT, TOFD, RT and MT in the Welding Workshop is the core practice. See ASNT training in Sharjah.

Fujairah is tank country. The Storage Tank environment, with UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank, matches terminal work closely, and LRUT screening suits jetty and transfer lines. See ASNT training in Fujairah.

Al Ain hosts aerostructures manufacturing, where composite and metallic parts are inspected with ultrasonic and other methods under aerospace quality systems. The Aircraft Hangar environment, with 54 airframe and component jobs, is the closest match for practice.

Environments and methods that match UAE work

Short answer: the simulator has five environments and twelve methods. In the UAE, the Oil & Gas Site matches upstream, gas and refining work; the Storage Tank matches Fujairah and Jebel Ali terminals; the Welding Workshop matches yards and construction; the Aircraft Hangar matches airline MRO and aerostructures; and the NDT Lab supports trainees.

The five workplace environments are the NDT Lab (bench specimens and reference blocks, 52 jobs), the Welding Workshop (weld coupons and fabrication joints, 52 jobs), the Aircraft Hangar (airframe and component inspection, 54 jobs), the Oil & Gas Site (weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant, 73 jobs) and the Storage Tank (UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank). Thirty-three guided lessons cover the fundamentals. The twelve methods are PT, MT and VT; contact UT, PAUT, TOFD and RT; ET and MFL; and LRUT guided-wave screening, IRIS for heat-exchanger and boiler tubes, and PMI for alloy verification.

Desalination deserves a mention because it is so central to UAE infrastructure. Thermal desalination and combined power and water plants have large numbers of heat-exchanger and condenser tubes, often in copper-nickel or titanium, where eddy current testing is the main screening method and IRIS is used to size wall loss. Practising ET and IRIS data interpretation in the simulator helps technicians who only see these jobs during planned outages.

Radiography is still widely used on pipeline and yard work, but it is tightly controlled. The simulator lets technicians practise RT technique and image interpretation without any source, so radiation licensing does not apply to simulator practice.

Certification, vendor requirements and regulators in the UAE

Short answer: UAE employers commonly ask for NDT personnel certified to ASNT SNT-TC-1A or ISO 9712 schemes, and national operators add their own contractor requirements. Radiation sources, including industrial radiography, are regulated by the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR). Simulator practice supports all of these but replaces none of them.

Personnel certification. Inspection companies in the UAE serve owners, EPCs and licensors from many countries, so ASNT SNT-TC-1A employer-based certification and ISO 9712 schemes such as PCN are both common, often within the same crew. Some work asks for ASNT central certification. Atlantis training is ASNT SNT-TC-1A only; Atlantis does not train for or issue ISO 9712, PCN or CSWIP certificates.

Owner and contractor requirements. ADNOC and its group companies, and other national energy and utility owners, set engineering standards, contractor prequalification and quality requirements, including requirements for NDT procedures and personnel. National programmes such as In-Country Value (ICV) also shape how contractors are evaluated. Requirements are set by each owner and change over time, so always work from the documents your contract names. Atlantis makes no claim of approval or registration with ADNOC or any other owner, and Practical NDT is not an owner-approved qualification.

Radiation regulation. The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) regulates the nuclear sector and the use of radiation sources across the UAE, including industrial radiography. Companies need the appropriate FANR licence, trained personnel and radiation protection arrangements. Confirm current requirements with FANR before exposure work. FANR also regulates Barakah, where nuclear-specific inspection requirements apply.

Workplace safety and codes. Occupational safety is overseen at federal and emirate level; Abu Dhabi, for example, has its own occupational safety and health framework, and free zones have their own rules. UAE plants and yards work mainly to ASME, API, AWS and owner specifications, with ISO and EN standards in some sectors and DNV or other class rules for marine work. ASME Section V, Section VIII, B31.3, API 1104, API 650 and 653 and AWS D1.1 are everyday references. The simulator teaches method skills, not code acceptance criteria; a company's Level III sets those. Atlantis does not offer API 510, 570 or 653 or CWI training.

For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in the UAE

Short answer: trainees, including Emirati technicians entering the industry, use guided lessons and NDT Lab jobs to learn fundamentals; working technicians refresh methods and rare defects between projects; Level IIIs build and assign scenario sets to benchmark multinational crews before mobilisation.

New trainees. Emiratisation goals and industry training programmes are bringing new UAE nationals into technical roles, alongside new expatriate hires. The 33 guided lessons give each trainee a structured route through set-up, calibration, scanning and interpretation, and NDT Lab jobs can be repeated as often as needed without consuming a reference block or a senior technician's time.

Working technicians. UAE technicians move between very different jobs: yard weld inspection one month, an offshore campaign the next, a Ruwais turnaround after that. The simulator lets them rehearse the next job's method, or a rare defect type, in camp, at the accommodation or at home, in a browser or app.

Level IIIs and team leads. For a crew assembled from several nationalities and certification backgrounds, a common scenario set gives the Level III an objective, comparable picture of readiness. Results help allocate technicians, plan refreshers and show clients that competence is checked between certifications.

Practice vs certification

Short answer: the Atlantis Practical NDT simulator is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification, does not issue certificates, is not an owner or operator approval and does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that ASNT SNT-TC-1A written practices or ISO 9712 schemes require.

Under SNT-TC-1A, the employer's written practice governs training, experience and examinations under Level III oversight, and the practical exam uses real specimens. ISO 9712 certification bodies set their own training, experience and exams. Owners' requirements sit on top. None of these accepts simulator results as a substitute. The value of the simulator is preparation: a candidate who has worked through many virtual flaws arrives at a real exam, and a real job, with established habits. Treat scores as one piece of evidence alongside supervised work and formal certification.

Offshore campaigns, outages and summer heat: why UAE crews practise virtually

Short answer: UAE crews rotate between offshore, plant and yard work, outages bring in large teams at short notice, and summer heat limits outdoor practice. A browser-based simulator lets technicians practise anywhere and lets employers check readiness before anyone mobilises.

Offshore and island rotations are the first reason. Technicians on platforms and islands have long shifts and little access to specimens. A simulator on a laptop or tablet fills the gap. Outages are the second: refinery, gas plant and power and water plant shutdowns create sudden demand for IRIS, ET and PMI, methods many technicians only use a few weeks a year. Specimens are the third: realistic flawed specimens are expensive and quickly become familiar, while a job library across five environments stays varied. Safety and climate are the fourth: practising radiography without a source, and tank and plant surveys without heat exposure, height or confined spaces, removes risk from learning. Real work still needs every usual control, but the method is rehearsed before the technician arrives.

ASNT training, consulting and ERP for UAE employers

Short answer: Atlantis also offers UAE companies ASNT SNT-TC-1A training, Level III consulting and an NDT ERP, delivered online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility. There is no Atlantis training centre in the UAE.

Employers whose clients specify SNT-TC-1A can use ASNT SNT-TC-1A training in the UAE for Level I, II and III candidates, led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, with written practice development. Level III procedure, technique and audit support is available through UAE consulting, and the Atlantis NDT ERP keeps ASNT and ISO 9712 certificates, calibration records, jobs and reports in one system. City training pages cover Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ruwais and Fujairah. All are quoted on request.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an NDT simulator available in the UAE?

Yes. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator runs in a browser or app and works anywhere in the UAE with an internet connection. There is no centre to visit; demos are arranged through the contact form.

Is Practical NDT approved by ADNOC or other UAE owners?

No. It is a practice tool, not an owner-approved qualification. Owners' personnel and procedure requirements must be met through the routes their contracts specify.

Does it replace the SNT-TC-1A or ISO 9712 practical exam?

No. Practical exams must be taken on real specimens under the employer's written practice or the certification body's rules. The simulator helps you prepare for them.

Can it help with NDT practical exam preparation in Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

Yes. Repeating set-up, scanning, interpretation and sizing builds the habits an exam checks, wherever you sit it.

Does it cover tank inspection for Fujairah and Jebel Ali terminals?

Yes. The Storage Tank environment covers UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank.

Does it include radiography, and does it need a FANR licence?

RT is included for technique and interpretation practice. No radiation is used, so simulator practice needs no licence. Real industrial radiography requires a FANR licence and the employer's radiation protection arrangements.

Is it useful for aviation NDT technicians in the UAE?

Yes. The Aircraft Hangar environment has 54 airframe and component jobs with ET, PT, UT and VT. It does not replace the aerospace qualification your organisation requires.

Does it cover desalination and power plant tube inspection?

Yes. ET and IRIS tube inspection are part of the Oil & Gas Site environment and transfer directly to condenser and exchanger work.

Can a UAE inspection company use it to assess a new crew?

Yes. A Level III can assign one scenario set to every technician and compare scores objectively, alongside certification and supervised work.

Does Atlantis offer ASNT training in the UAE?

Yes, ASNT SNT-TC-1A training only, delivered online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility. See NDT training in the UAE.
