NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in Sweden
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Sweden is a country where that kind of practice earns its keep. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator is an immersive, 3D, game-like platform that runs in a browser or app. A technician steps into a virtual NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site or full-size storage tank, picks up a job, sets up the technique, scans or interprets, and gets a score the moment the job is closed. Swedish inspection work is unusually varied for a country of its size: special steel and tube mills in Bergslagen, iron ore and steel in Norrbotten, three nuclear power sites on the coast, a refinery and petrochemical cluster on the west coast, truck, car and bearing manufacturing around Gothenburg and Södertälje, military aircraft in Linköping, aero-engine parts in Trollhättan, naval shipbuilding in Karlskrona, and hundreds of district heating, combined heat and power and pulp mill boilers spread across the country. A technician can go months without touching a particular method, then need it on a Monday morning. The simulator lets trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs keep their hands and eyes sharp between assignments without booking lab time or using up specimens.
This page is the Sweden hub for Practical NDT. It covers where Swedish NDT work actually happens, how the simulator's environments and methods map onto that work, the regulators and schemes Swedish technicians deal with, and a plain explanation of what a simulator can and cannot do for certification. If you would like to see it with your own jobs in mind, request a Practical NDT demo for Sweden.
Sweden's NDT workforce and where the work is
Short answer: Swedish NDT work clusters around five industrial systems, namely special steel and metals, nuclear power, energy and process plants, automotive and engineering manufacturing, and defence aerospace and naval work. Each sits in a different part of the country and asks for a different mix of methods, so a technician in Luleå and one in Stenungsund can have very different working weeks.
Norrbotten and the north. The far north is Sweden's iron ore and primary steel country. The Kiruna and Malmberget mines feed pellet plants and the ore railway to the ports of Luleå and Narvik, and the Luleå steelworks has been the centre of Swedish primary steelmaking for decades. New fossil-free steel and hydrogen projects in the Luleå and Boden area have added large construction sites with heavy structural, piping and pressure work. Further south along the coast, Skellefteå hosts a major copper and precious-metals smelter, and the Norrland coast as a whole is lined with pulp and paper mills whose recovery boilers, digesters and bleach plant equipment need careful, regular inspection. The great rivers of the north, the Lule, Skellefte and Ume among them, carry hydropower stations with penstocks, turbines and gates. Inspection here means boiler tube thickness surveys, weld inspection on new construction, corrosion work in aggressive chemical service, and structural MT and VT on heavy plant and mining equipment, often in long, cold winters and at sites hours apart.
Bergslagen and the special steel belt. Central Sweden, from Dalarna through Gästrikland and Värmland to Västmanland, is where the country's special steel tradition lives: strip production in Borlänge, tube and advanced-materials manufacturing in Sandviken, bearing steel in Hofors, stainless steel in Avesta, tool steel in Hagfors, and plate in Oxelösund on the coast south of Stockholm. Mill NDT is a different world from field inspection. It involves automated and manual UT of bars, plate and forgings, eddy current testing of tubes, PMI alloy verification of high-alloy grades, and MT and PT on finished parts. A technician who calibrates an immersion or contact UT system every shift still benefits from rehearsing manual flaw sizing, because the hard calls come when a mill indication needs a manual follow-up.
The nuclear coast. Sweden's three operating nuclear sites are Forsmark in Uppland, Oskarshamn on the Småland coast and Ringhals in Halland south of Gothenburg. Annual outages bring large inspection programmes on reactor components, primary and auxiliary piping, steam generators at the pressurised water reactors, and turbine-hall equipment. Nuclear NDT in Sweden is notable for its qualification regime (see the regulators section below), and outage crews are judged on precision and procedure discipline. Västerås, west of Stockholm, adds nuclear fuel manufacturing and a long history of power engineering.
The west coast process cluster. Lysekil hosts the largest refinery in Scandinavia, Gothenburg has two further refineries and one of the Nordic region's busiest ports, and Stenungsund is home to Sweden's main petrochemical cluster with a steam cracker and chemical plants. Refinery and petrochemical turnarounds call for heat exchanger tube inspection, alloy verification, corrosion mapping on piping and vessels, TOFD and PAUT on pressure welds, and tank inspection at terminals. This is the part of Sweden that looks most like the Oil & Gas Site environment in the simulator.
Gothenburg, Trollhättan and the engineering west. Gothenburg is Sweden's automotive and engineering capital, with car and truck manufacturing, bearing production and a dense supplier base. Trollhättan, inland, has a long aero-engine component tradition, where castings, forgings and welded engine structures go through penetrant, eddy current, UT and radiographic inspection to strict aerospace procedures.
Stockholm, Södertälje, Linköping and the east. Heavy truck and engine manufacturing in Södertälje, power and automation engineering in Västerås, combat aircraft design and production in Linköping, and the many combined heat and power plants that serve Stockholm and other cities give the east a mix of manufacturing, aerospace and boiler work.
Karlskrona and the south. Karlskrona is Sweden's main naval base and home to its submarine and surface naval shipbuilding, where hull welds, pressure-hull structures and high-strength steels demand demanding UT, PAUT, MT and RT work. Skåne in the far south adds food, packaging and engineering manufacturing, the Öresund ports and offshore wind activity in the southern Baltic.
Practical NDT by region in Sweden
Atlantis does not yet have separate Practical NDT city pages in Sweden, so this hub covers the main work centres directly. The table maps each to the environments and methods in the simulator that fit its everyday jobs.
| City or region | Main local sectors | Environments & methods to practise |
|---|---|---|
| Luleå, Boden and Norrbotten | Iron ore, primary steel, new fossil-free steel projects, hydropower, ports | Welding Workshop, NDT Lab, Storage Tank; UT, PAUT, MT, VT, RT |
| Bergslagen (Borlänge, Sandviken, Hofors, Avesta) | Special steel, tubes, bearings, stainless, forgings | NDT Lab, Welding Workshop; UT, ET, PMI, MT, PT |
| Forsmark, Oskarshamn, Ringhals | Nuclear power outages and plant maintenance | NDT Lab, Oil & Gas Site; UT, PAUT, TOFD, ET, VT |
| Lysekil, Gothenburg, Stenungsund | Refining, petrochemicals, port terminals, tank farms | Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank; IRIS, PMI, PAUT, TOFD, MFL, LRUT |
| Gothenburg and Trollhättan | Automotive, bearings, aero-engine components | Aircraft Hangar, NDT Lab; ET, PT, UT, RT |
| Stockholm, Södertälje, Västerås, Linköping | Trucks and engines, power engineering, combat aircraft, CHP plants | Aircraft Hangar, NDT Lab, Oil & Gas Site; ET, UT, PT, IRIS |
| Karlskrona and the south | Naval shipbuilding, ports, engineering, southern Baltic offshore wind | Welding Workshop; PAUT, TOFD, UT, MT, RT |
Norrbotten. New steel and hydrogen plants mean a long construction phase with structural steel, process piping, pressure equipment and large tanks, alongside maintenance on existing blast furnace, coke and pellet plant equipment. Weld inspection dominates construction, so RT interpretation, PAUT sizing and MT on fillet welds are the skills to keep current. The Welding Workshop and NDT Lab are the natural starting points, and the Storage Tank environment fits tank construction and in-service surveys. Cold, distance and rotational schedules make a browser-based tool especially practical.
Bergslagen. Mill technicians spend most of their time on automated lines, but the decisions that matter often come down to a manual UT check, an eddy current indication on a tube or a PMI reading on a mixed-up bundle. NDT Lab jobs on reference blocks and bench specimens rehearse calibration, sensitivity setting and manual sizing; ET jobs build tube inspection habits; PMI jobs reinforce alloy verification discipline.
The nuclear sites. Outage work rewards precision and strict procedure. The simulator does not replace the qualified procedures and equipment used in Swedish plants, but it gives technicians a place to rehearse UT and PAUT setups, TOFD on pressure welds, eddy current tube work and visual examination before a demanding outage window, and gives team leads an objective view of readiness.
The west coast. Refinery and petrochemical crews benefit most from the Oil & Gas Site environment, where IRIS on exchanger tubes, PMI on alloy circuits, PAUT corrosion mapping, TOFD on vessel welds and LRUT guided-wave screening all appear. Tank terminals in Gothenburg and Lysekil map to the Storage Tank environment's shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening.
Gothenburg and Trollhättan. Automotive and bearing manufacturing lean on eddy current, UT and surface methods on high-volume parts, while aero-engine work brings penetrant inspection, eddy current and radiography under aerospace procedures. The Aircraft Hangar environment and the NDT Lab cover the fundamentals that both share.
The east. Linköping's aerospace work maps to the Aircraft Hangar environment, while the many CHP and district heating plants around Stockholm, Västerås and Uppsala bring boiler tube thickness surveys, IRIS on heat exchanger tubes and weld inspection on pressure piping. Truck and engine plants add manufacturing UT and ET.
Karlskrona and the south. Naval shipbuilding asks for consistent weld inspection on thick, high-strength steel, so PAUT, TOFD and RT interpretation in the Welding Workshop are the core. Offshore wind and port work in the southern Baltic add structural weld and corrosion jobs.
Environments and methods that match Swedish work
Direct answer: the Atlantis Practical NDT simulator has five workplace environments, twelve methods and 33 guided lessons. In Sweden the most used will be the NDT Lab for mill and nuclear fundamentals, the Welding Workshop for construction and shipbuilding, the Oil & Gas Site for refining, petrochemicals and energy plants, the Aircraft Hangar for aerospace and engine work, and the Storage Tank for terminals and tank construction.
NDT Lab (52 jobs). Bench specimens and reference blocks build the fundamentals: calibration, probe handling, sensitivity, scan coverage and indication recognition. It suits new trainees from Swedish vocational and upper-secondary technical programmes, mill technicians who want manual practice, and anyone preparing for a practical examination under any scheme.
Welding Workshop (52 jobs). Weld coupons and fabrication joints support RT film and digital image interpretation, UT and PAUT flaw detection and sizing, TOFD, MT and VT against acceptance criteria. This fits Norrbotten construction, naval shipbuilding, pressure-equipment fabrication and the many structural and bridge fabricators across the country.
Oil & Gas Site (73 jobs). The largest environment covers weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant. For Sweden it maps to the west coast refineries and petrochemical cluster, but also to CHP plants, pulp mill recovery boilers and chemical plants, which share the same equipment types: piping, vessels, exchangers and boilers. IRIS internal rotary UT on exchanger and boiler tubes, PMI alloy verification, LRUT guided-wave screening, PAUT corrosion mapping and TOFD are all here.
Aircraft Hangar (54 jobs). Airframe and component inspection with eddy current, penetrant and UT. It serves Linköping and Trollhättan aerospace work, airline and business aviation maintenance at Arlanda, Landvetter and other airports, and military aviation maintenance.
Storage Tank. UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank. Port terminals, refinery tank farms, pulp mill chemical storage and new tank construction in the north all generate this work.
Across the twelve methods, surface methods (PT, MT, VT) cover structural and finished-part work; volumetric methods (UT contact, PAUT, TOFD, RT) carry weld and corrosion assessment; electromagnetic methods (ET, MFL) serve tubes, aerospace and tank floors; and the specialist techniques (LRUT, IRIS, PMI) match what refinery, energy and special steel quality programmes ask for.
Regulators and requirements Swedish technicians meet
Short answer: Swedish NDT personnel are normally certified to EN ISO 9712, industrial radiography is regulated by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority, pressure equipment in use falls under the Swedish Work Environment Authority, and nuclear plant NDT has its own qualification regime. Practical NDT is a practice tool that is useful under any of these frameworks and replaces none of them.
Personnel certification. Sweden applies SS-EN ISO 9712, the Swedish adoption of the international standard for qualification and certification of NDT personnel. Much Nordic certification is issued under the Nordtest scheme, which runs across the Nordic countries through several certifying bodies, and other accredited certification bodies also operate. Employers working for US-owned plants, US OEMs or on US-code projects sometimes keep a written practice based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A as well. That is market context only. Atlantis training aligns with ASNT SNT-TC-1A only; Atlantis does not train toward, certify or administer EN ISO 9712 or Nordtest certification, and Practical NDT is practice for whichever scheme you work under.
Radiation safety. The Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (Strålsäkerhetsmyndigheten, SSM) regulates ionising radiation, and industrial radiography is covered by its regulations SSMFS 2018:6 on industrial radiography, alongside SSM's general rules for licensed radiation activities. Employers carrying out radiography need the appropriate authorisation and must meet SSM's requirements on competence, controlled areas and dose. Practical NDT's RT jobs involve no radiation source and do not count toward any radiation protection training or authorisation.
Pressure equipment. New pressure equipment is placed on the market under the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU. Equipment in use is covered by the Swedish Work Environment Authority (Arbetsmiljöverket). Since 1 January 2025 its rules on the use and inspection of pressure equipment sit in AFS 2023:11, which replaced the earlier AFS 2017:3 provisions, with requirements such as classification, documented risk assessment and inspection by accredited inspection bodies. Confirm the current provisions with Arbetsmiljöverket or your inspection body before relying on any detail.
Nuclear NDT qualification. SSM requires that NDT of reactor components and connected piping in Swedish nuclear plants is qualified. Qualification of NDT systems, meaning procedure, equipment and personnel, is carried out by an independent qualification body; the Swedish Qualification Centre (SQC) has performed this role since the 1990s. A simulator does not qualify anything, but it can help technicians rehearse before demanding qualified work.
Codes and standards in daily use. Swedish fabrication and in-service work commonly references EN and ISO standards for weld examination and acceptance (for example the EN ISO 17635 family and its method-specific standards), EN 13445 for unfired pressure vessels and EN 13480 for industrial piping, along with ASME and API codes where the owner or licensor requires them. Mentioned as context only.
For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in Sweden
Practical NDT adapts to three kinds of user, and each has a distinct problem in Sweden.
New trainees. Many Swedish trainees come into NDT from welding, industrial or technical programmes, or move across from mill operations. The hardest thing to get early on is enough time on equipment and specimens. Guided fundamentals in the NDT Lab let a trainee repeat calibration, angle-beam setup, scan coverage and indication interpretation as often as needed, with instant feedback, so the first time on a real block is not the first attempt. It is also useful NDT practical exam preparation, provided everyone understands that the real exam is still taken on real specimens.
Working technicians. Swedish work is lumpy. Nuclear outages, refinery turnarounds and pulp mill shutdowns come in blocks, often in spring and summer, and a construction season in the north can pull technicians away from their usual methods for months. A technician who has been on tank floors may be asked to run IRIS on an exchanger bundle or PAUT on a nozzle weld. Rare-defect refreshers between assignments, on stress corrosion cracking, lack of fusion, tube pitting, hydrogen damage and similar, help them arrive ready instead of relearning on the client's equipment.
Level IIIs and team leads. Level IIIs can build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews objectively and find coverage gaps before a campaign. When an outage or turnaround brings in contract technicians from other Nordic countries and further afield, a consistent scenario set gives a like-for-like view of who is ready for which method. It also helps check whether a new procedure is understood before it goes to the field.
Practice vs certification
Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification, it does not grant a level under EN ISO 9712, the Nordtest scheme, ASNT SNT-TC-1A or any employer's written practice, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens those schemes require. It does not qualify procedures or personnel for Swedish nuclear work and does not satisfy any SSM requirement for radiography. What it adds is realistic repetition: more chances to set up, scan, interpret and get feedback than a lab schedule or a specimen cupboard allows. It complements formal NDT training and on-the-job experience; the formal practical exam remains the step that counts.
Distance, seasons and shift work: why virtual NDT training suits Sweden
Direct answer: Sweden's long distances, dark winters, shift-based mills and concentrated outage seasons make it hard to keep a hands-on practice routine, and a browser-based ultrasonic testing simulator and phased array simulator remove most of that friction.
Sweden stretches well over a thousand kilometres from Skåne to the northern ore fields, and many inspection firms cover large territories from a handful of bases. A shop that wants its people to rehearse a PAUT setup or an RT interpretation before a job has to line up a free lab, a qualified supervisor and the right specimens at the same time. Smaller employers often do not own flawed specimens covering rare defect types at all. Mill technicians work rotating shifts that rarely coincide with a supervisor's free afternoon. And the outage and shutdown calendar means that the moment practice is most needed is also the moment everyone is busiest.
With the simulator, technicians can practise at home, in the shop office between jobs or during quiet hours on shift, subject to the site's IT rules. Supervisors can see scores rather than relying on self-reported confidence. Scenario sets built by a Level III can be pushed to a whole crew before an outage or turnaround starts, so the first morning on site is not spent discovering who is rusty. None of this replaces time on real equipment, but it makes real time more productive. Many Swedish technicians work comfortably in English, and the simulator's jobs and feedback are presented in English.
Who in Sweden typically looks at Practical NDT
The groups that tend to find a simulator useful in Sweden are inspection service companies that staff outages, turnarounds and construction projects; special steel and tube mills with in-house NDT departments; manufacturers of trucks, engines, bearings and aerospace parts with internal quality teams; fabricators of pressure equipment, structures and ships; vocational and technical education providers who want more practice time for students; and individual technicians preparing for an examination or a return to a method they have not used for a while. These are industry descriptions, not a customer list; Atlantis does not name customers on this page.
For employers who work to US codes or for US-owned plants and OEMs, Atlantis also offers ASNT SNT-TC-1A aligned NDT training delivered online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility, and Level III consulting on procedures, techniques and written practices. The Atlantis ERP can record EN ISO 9712 and Nordtest certificates alongside ASNT-based ones for companies that manage mixed crews.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an NDT simulator I can use in Sweden?
Yes. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator runs in a browser or app, so it works anywhere in Sweden with a connection, from Malmö to Kiruna. There is no physical centre to visit.
Does Practical NDT count toward EN ISO 9712 or Nordtest certification?
No. It is practice only. Certification under EN ISO 9712, whether through the Nordtest scheme or another accredited body, needs its own training, experience and examinations, including a practical exam on real specimens. The simulator helps you prepare.
Can it help with NDT practical exam preparation?
It can help build familiarity, speed and confidence with setups, scanning and interpretation before a practical exam. It does not replace the exam or the hours of experience your scheme or employer requires.
Is it useful for nuclear outage work in Sweden?
For rehearsal, yes: UT, PAUT, TOFD, eddy current and visual skills can be practised before an outage. It does not qualify procedures or personnel, which in Swedish nuclear plants is done through SSM's qualification regime and an independent qualification body.
Does it include radiography?
Yes, as technique and image interpretation practice with no radiation source. It does not count toward SSM requirements for industrial radiography.
Which Swedish industries is it most useful for?
Special steel and tube mills, primary steel and mining in the north, nuclear power, refining and petrochemicals on the west coast, CHP and pulp mill boilers, automotive and bearing manufacturing, aerospace, naval shipbuilding and structural fabrication.
Is there an ultrasonic testing simulator or phased array simulator in it?
Yes. Contact UT, PAUT and TOFD jobs appear across the NDT Lab, Welding Workshop and Oil & Gas Site environments, with UT thickness surveys in the Storage Tank environment and IRIS on tubes.
What experience level is it for?
All levels: guided fundamentals for new trainees, rare-defect refreshers for working technicians, and scenario building and crew benchmarking for Level IIIs and team leads.
Is the simulator in Swedish?
The simulator's jobs and feedback are in English. Ask during the demo if language support matters for your team.
Does Atlantis offer ASNT training in Sweden?
Atlantis training follows ASNT SNT-TC-1A and is delivered online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility. It suits employers working to US codes or for US clients. It is not EN ISO 9712 training. See NDT training.
