Real-Time Radiography (RTR)

Real-Time Radiography uses image-intensifier tubes or flat-panel detectors to display a live X-ray video of a component, allowing dynamic inspection of moving parts, fluid flow, or operator-positioned objects.

Definition

Real-Time Radiography (RTR) produces a continuously updating X-ray image at video frame rates. The component or X-ray source can be moved while the operator watches the live image, dramatically increasing throughput for repetitive parts and enabling dynamic studies of valves, castings, and assemblies.

Technical Context

Modern RTR systems use flat-panel detectors with frame rates of 15–30 fps and image-processing software that integrates multiple frames to improve SNR.

How it works

Radiographic imaging viewed as it happens, using an image intensifier or digital detector, so the part can be manipulated under the beam and observed from changing angles rather than captured in a single fixed exposure.

What it finds

Volumetric flaws, and — uniquely — behaviour: parts can be rotated to bring a suspected planar flaw into a favourable orientation, and moving components can be observed under the beam.

What it will not find

Fine detail, historically, because intensifier resolution trailed film. Modern detectors have narrowed that gap considerably, but the trade of sensitivity against speed remains real.

How it is actually done

Used heavily for castings and for high-throughput production where the ability to reorient the part interactively is worth more than ultimate sensitivity.

Where it goes wrong

Assuming the live image has the same sensitivity as a radiograph of the same part. The IQI requirement applies to radioscopic examination too, and it is the only honest check.
