The prerequisite chain nobody selling courses mentions

Phased array sits at the top of a qualification chain, and every link below it is mandatory. The chain reads: UT Level I qualification, then UT Level II qualification with its full training and experience load, then — and only then — dedicated phased-array training, supervised phased-array experience, and a phased-array examination. Course providers advertise the third link because that is the product they sell. The first two links are assumed, and technicians who skip them discover the gap at certification time, after the course fee is spent.

The logic is physical, not bureaucratic. A phased-array instrument fires the same ultrasound governed by the same wave physics as a conventional flaw detector — mode conversion, beam spread, near-zone effects, attenuation, signal-to-noise judgment. What PA adds is electronic beam steering and focusing through focal laws, sectorial imaging, and encoded data. An operator who cannot predict what a conventional 60-degree shear-wave probe will do cannot troubleshoot a sectorial scan that disagrees with expectation — the instrument's imaging just makes the confusion higher-resolution.

Under ISO 9712 schemes the chain is explicit: a current, valid UT Level 2 certificate is the documented entry condition for phased-array Level 2 examination. Under SNT-TC-1A the chain lives in the employer's written practice, which qualifies personnel in PAUT as an advanced ultrasonic technique on top of UT Level II. Either way, 'PAUT Level II with no UT background' is not a fast track — it is a category error.

The UT Level II foundation: what must already be banked

Before phased array enters the conversation, SNT-TC-1A's recommended figures for conventional UT set the baseline: on the order of 40 hours of formal training for UT Level I and a further 40 hours for Level II, with recommended experience around 210 hours at Level I and 630 more at Level II — roughly 840 supervised hours on the tools. Employers' written practices state the binding numbers and frequently exceed these, but the shape is universal: UT Level II is itself a serious, year-scale qualification.

That foundation is precisely what the PA course assumes on day one. An 80-hour phased-array syllabus spends its time on focal law computation, delay laws, sectorial and linear scanning, calibration of multi-element probes, wedge geometry, encoder setup, scan-plan development, and data interpretation. It does not re-teach Snell's law, DAC construction, or transfer corrections — there is no time, and the instructors assume fluency. Students without solid UT Level II fundamentals report the same experience: the first two days are survivable, and the calibration and scan-plan work after that is a wall.

PA training hours and what an 80-hour course actually contains

The 80-hour figure recurs across the industry for good reason: ASNT's own Phased Array Level II course is built as an 80-hour program counting toward SNT-TC-1A recommended training, and ISO 9712-scheme training providers teach PA Level 2 to the same duration. Under SNT-TC-1A the binding number is whatever the certifying employer's written practice specifies — some accept less for technicians with extensive advanced-UT background, many require the full 80 — but a course materially shorter than that benchmark should prompt questions about what was cut.

A credible 80-hour PA syllabus splits roughly between theory and hands-on instrument time. Theory covers array transducer physics, focal law generation, beam steering and focusing limits, sectorial versus linear scanning, and code-driven scan-plan design. Practical time goes to instrument calibration (velocity, wedge delay, sensitivity, TCG across the sweep), encoder-driven data acquisition, and analysis of real weld data — sizing, plotting, and accept/reject calls against a code. Courses light on instrument hours produce students who can pass a written quiz and cannot set up a probe.

Experience is the third component and the one most often left undocumented. SNT-TC-1A puts technique experience under the written practice; providers commonly reference several hundred hours of supervised PA on-the-job time, and ISO 9712 schemes express the requirement as months of PA experience. The operational advice is identical under both: log every supervised phased-array hour — dates, equipment, procedures, supervising Level II/III — from the first day, because unlogged experience does not exist at certification time.

Course completion certifies nobody: how certification actually happens

Under SNT-TC-1A — the regime most US employers run — certification is an act the employer performs, not a document a school issues. The sequence: the employer's written practice defines PAUT qualification requirements; the candidate accumulates the training hours (the course) and the supervised experience; the employer's NDT Level III administers written and practical examinations; the employer then certifies the technician in writing, with vision exams current. The course certificate is evidence for exactly one box on that checklist.

This is why 'PAUT Level II certified' on a résumé means less than it appears until an employer re-certifies it. SNT-TC-1A certification belongs to the employer that issued it and does not transfer — a new employer must certify the technician under its own written practice, though documented prior training and experience carry forward as evidence. Hiring managers in US inspection companies read a PA course certificate as 'trained, certifiable,' not 'certified,' and technicians should describe themselves the same way.

ISO 9712 inverts the model: an accredited certification body examines the candidate at an authorized center and issues a certificate that is personal and portable across employers, valid for five years with a structured renewal path. The prerequisite logic is the same — current UT Level 2 first — but the certificate survives job changes. Multinational operators and projects specifying European or international codes are where ISO 9712 PA certification is most often demanded in practice.

SNT-TC-1A versus ISO 9712: choosing the route that matches your market

For technicians working the US market, the answer is direct: SNT-TC-1A employer certification is the operative system, because ASME-driven work and the vast majority of US inspection companies and asset owners run written practices built on SNT-TC-1A (2024 edition since January 2026) or its mandatory sibling CP-189. A US technician's fastest route to billable PA work is UT Level II under a current employer, the 80-hour PA course, logged PA experience, and employer examination — no central body involved.

ISO 9712 earns its place in three situations: work destined for international or offshore projects specifying central certification; technicians who change employers often and want a portable credential that does not reset at each written practice; and companies bidding into markets where clients audit against ISO 9712 by name. The cost is real — scheme training, central examination, and renewal cycles — so it is an investment matched to a market, not a default upgrade.

Plenty of senior PA technicians eventually hold both: employer certification for domestic ASME work, ISO 9712 for the passport effect. The mistake to avoid is the reverse order — pursuing central certification before the conventional UT foundation and field experience exist. Both regimes will stop an underprepared candidate at the same wall: the practical examination, where scan-plan judgment and calibration fluency cannot be crammed.

Stacking TOFD on PAUT: the advanced weld-inspection package

PAUT and TOFD travel together in code-driven weld inspection because they compensate for each other's blind spots: phased array delivers amplitude-based detection and sizing with flexible beam angles, while time-of-flight diffraction delivers through-wall sizing accuracy from diffracted tip signals that barely depend on amplitude at all. Codes and procedures for full ultrasonic examination in lieu of radiography routinely deploy both on the same weld, which is why crews staff for the pair.

TOFD is qualified as its own technique, not absorbed into a PA certification. The same three-part structure applies on the same UT Level II foundation: a dedicated TOFD training course, logged supervised TOFD experience, and technique-specific examination — under the employer's written practice for SNT-TC-1A shops, or as a separate TOFD Level 2 certificate under ISO 9712 schemes with the same current-UT-Level-2 prerequisite. Lateral-wave interpretation, dead-zone reasoning, and diffraction-signal recognition are genuinely different skills from sectorial-scan analysis.

Sequence advice from working Level IIIs is consistent: consolidate PA in the field before adding TOFD. A technician six months into real encoded PA production work absorbs a TOFD course far faster than one stacking both certificates in a single training season — and employers staff advanced-UT crews around technicians who can independently run one technique well, then cross-train them into the second on live projects.
