NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in West Virginia
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience. Practical NDT is a 3D, game-like inspection environment in your browser or app: you calibrate, scan a pipeline weld, a tube bundle, a tank or a pressure vessel, call the indication and get scored feedback straight away. It is built for every level, from a trainee who has never held a probe to a Level III planning a crew for a gas plant turnaround. West Virginia needs hands-on NDT practice because so much of its work is energy infrastructure in remote places. The Marcellus and Utica shale gas fields in the north-central counties and the Northern Panhandle feed gas processing and fractionation plants and a dense network of gathering and transmission pipelines. The Kanawha Valley around Charleston has a long history as a chemical manufacturing centre, and the Ohio River from Parkersburg to Huntington holds chemical and polymer plants, specialty metals, coal-fired power stations and river terminals. Technicians often drive long distances on mountain roads to reach a job, and practice time with real specimens is scarce. A simulator lets them practise anywhere with an internet connection.
West Virginia’s NDT workforce and where the work is
West Virginia’s inspection work follows its rivers and its gas fields.
North-central West Virginia and the Northern Panhandle. Around Morgantown, Clarksburg, Bridgeport and west toward Doddridge, Wetzel and Marshall counties, the shale gas industry drives a large share of NDT demand. Gathering lines, compressor stations, gas processing plants and fractionation facilities are built and maintained continuously. New pipeline construction needs radiography or automated UT on girth welds, and operating facilities need thickness surveys, weld inspection on tie-ins and repairs, and tank and vessel inspection. Large interstate transmission pipelines crossing the state, including recent new-build projects, add further pipeline and compressor station work. The Northern Panhandle around Wheeling and Weirton has a long steelmaking history and still has metal processing and fabrication. Morgantown is also home to West Virginia University and a federal energy research laboratory.
The Kanawha Valley (Charleston). Charleston, South Charleston, Institute, Nitro and Belle make up one of the country’s older chemical manufacturing corridors. Chemical plants run reactors, distillation columns, heat exchangers, pressure vessels and piping in corrosive service, which calls for corrosion UT, heat-exchanger tube inspection, PMI and weld inspection during turnarounds. Natural gas transmission and distribution companies have significant operations in the region, and nearby Putnam County has an automotive engine and transmission plant. Coal-fired power stations along the Kanawha and Ohio rivers add boiler tube and piping inspection.
The Ohio River corridor (Parkersburg to Huntington). The Mid-Ohio Valley around Parkersburg has chemical and polymer manufacturing. Huntington has specialty nickel alloy production, rail yards, barge terminals, and the Huntington Tri-State port district, one of the busiest inland river port areas in the country by tonnage. Across the river in Kentucky and Ohio there are refining and steel operations, so Huntington technicians often work across three states.
Southern coalfields. Coal mining and preparation plants in southern West Virginia need inspection of heavy mining equipment, conveyors, structures and preparation plant vessels, mostly MT, UT and VT for fatigue cracking and wear.
Practical NDT by city in West Virginia
Each West Virginia city below has its own Practical NDT page. The table shows how local sectors map to the simulator’s environments and methods.
| City | Main local sectors | Environments & methods to practise |
|---|---|---|
| Morgantown | Marcellus and Utica shale gas, gathering and transmission pipelines, gas processing, energy research, university | Oil & Gas Site (LRUT, corrosion UT, PMI), Welding Workshop (RT, PAUT on girth welds), Storage Tank (MFL floor) |
| Charleston | Kanawha Valley chemical plants, natural gas transmission, power generation, automotive manufacturing nearby | Oil & Gas Site (IRIS, PMI, corrosion UT), Storage Tank (shell and floor), Welding Workshop (TOFD, RT) |
| Huntington | Specialty nickel alloys, river port and barge terminals, rail, nearby refining and steel | NDT Lab (UT, ET, PMI on alloys), Storage Tank (terminal tanks), Welding Workshop (MT, UT) |
| Parkersburg | Chemical and polymer plants, Ohio River terminals, gas processing and pipelines | Oil & Gas Site (IRIS, corrosion UT, PMI), Welding Workshop (PAUT, RT), Storage Tank |
Morgantown. Morgantown sits at the centre of West Virginia’s shale gas activity. Inspection companies here send crews to pipeline spreads, compressor stations and processing plants. Girth weld radiography and PAUT, thickness surveys on station piping, and guided-wave screening on buried or cased crossings are typical tasks. The Oil & Gas Site and Welding Workshop environments cover them, and trainees from the university and technical programmes can build fundamentals before joining a field crew.
Charleston. The Kanawha Valley’s chemical plants make Charleston a corrosion and turnaround town. Heat-exchanger bundles need IRIS, alloy piping needs PMI, and pressure vessels and columns need thickness and weld inspection. The Oil & Gas Site environment is designed for exactly this work, and the Storage Tank environment covers chemical and fuel storage.
Huntington. Huntington’s specialty nickel alloy production requires material-focused inspection: UT on bar, plate and forgings, eddy current on tubing and PMI to confirm alloy grades. River terminals and rail add tank and structural work, and technicians often travel to refineries and plants across the Ohio. The NDT Lab and Storage Tank environments are the starting point.
Parkersburg. The Mid-Ohio Valley’s chemical and polymer plants run heat exchangers, reactors and piping that are inspected during planned outages, and gas processing and pipelines are nearby. IRIS, corrosion UT, PMI and weld inspection are the core skills, practised in the Oil & Gas Site and Welding Workshop environments.
Environments and methods that match West Virginia work
Practical NDT offers five environments and twelve methods. Here is how they align with West Virginia jobs.
Oil & Gas Site (73 jobs). The central environment for West Virginia. It models a process plant with weld, corrosion, tube and screening work. Gas processing plants, compressor stations and Kanawha Valley and Ohio River chemical plants all need UT thickness surveys on piping circuits, IRIS on heat-exchanger and boiler tubes, LRUT guided-wave screening on long runs, road crossings and pipe racks, and PMI on alloy components.
Welding Workshop (52 jobs). Weld coupons and fabrication joints inspected with VT, MT, PT, UT, PAUT, TOFD and RT. For pipeline construction this is where technicians practise radiographic interpretation and PAUT on girth-weld-style joints, learning to recognise burn-through, incomplete penetration, lack of fusion, porosity and cracks. Fabrication shops building skids and pressure vessels for the gas industry use the same skills.
Storage Tank. A full-size tank with UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening. Condensate and produced water tanks at gas facilities, chemical storage in the Kanawha Valley and fuel storage at river terminals all need this work.
NDT Lab (52 jobs). Bench specimens and reference blocks for calibration, DAC and TCG, angle-beam setup, eddy current and radiographic interpretation. It suits Huntington’s alloy producers and anyone building fundamentals.
Aircraft Hangar (54 jobs). Airframe and component inspection with ET, PT, VT and UT. West Virginia has aircraft maintenance and aerospace component work in the Bridgeport and Clarksburg area around North Central West Virginia Airport, and Air National Guard units in the state; the hangar also gives industrial technicians eddy current practice.
The full method set is PT, MT, VT, contact UT, PAUT, TOFD, RT, ET, MFL, LRUT, IRIS and PMI, supported by 33 guided lessons.
Regulators and requirements West Virginia technicians meet
Radiation safety. West Virginia is not an NRC Agreement State. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission licenses and inspects the use of byproduct radioactive materials in the state, including the iridium-192 and cobalt-60 sources used for industrial gamma radiography on pipelines and in plants. The state’s Radiological Health Program, in the Bureau for Public Health, registers and inspects radiation-producing devices such as industrial x-ray equipment and oversees naturally occurring radioactive materials and certain other sources under the Radiological Health Rule (64CSR23). West Virginia has formally told the NRC it intends to pursue Agreement State status, so radiography companies should watch for changes. Radiographers must meet NRC radiographer training and certification requirements. Practical NDT’s RT scenarios involve no radiation and do not satisfy any radiation safety requirement.
Boilers and pressure vessels. The West Virginia Division of Labor inspects and certifies high-pressure steam boilers operating above 15 psi, issues permits to install and operate them, and certifies boiler inspectors and special inspectors. New construction follows the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and repairs commonly follow the National Board Inspection Code.
Pipelines. Gas and hazardous liquid pipelines are regulated by PHMSA under 49 CFR Parts 192 and 195, and the Public Service Commission of West Virginia runs a gas pipeline safety programme for intrastate lines. Pipeline welding and its NDT typically follow API 1104.
Other codes. Chemical and gas processing plants use API 510, API 570 and API 653 with ASME Section V and ASME B31.3. Structural and bridge work uses AWS D1.1 and AWS D1.5, with the West Virginia Division of Highways specifying inspection on state bridges. Coal mining equipment falls under MSHA oversight and owner requirements.
Personnel certification. Most West Virginia employers certify NDT personnel under a written practice based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A. Some pipeline operators and plant owners add their own qualification tests; those are employer requirements. Practical NDT is practice for any scheme. Atlantis’s own NDT training is aligned with SNT-TC-1A.
For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in West Virginia
Trainees. Pipeline and gas processing work pulls in new people from welding, construction and mining backgrounds, and trainees are often placed on a crew quickly. The guided lessons give them fundamentals first: how an ultrasonic probe couples, what a radiographic density means, how a yoke should be placed, why surface preparation matters for penetrant. Because practice is online, a trainee in a small town does not have to wait for a lab session in a bigger city.
Working technicians. West Virginia technicians move between pipeline spreads, compressor stations, chemical plant turnarounds and power plant outages. A technician who spent months shooting girth welds may be sent next to IRIS on an exchanger or an MFL tank floor survey. Practical NDT lets them refresh on the specific scenario before the job, including rare defects such as stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen-induced cracking, erosion wall loss in tubes and underside floor corrosion.
Level IIIs and leads. Before a turnaround or pipeline season, a Level III can assign scenario sets matched to the scope and compare results across the crew. That shows who is ready for each method, where coverage is thin, and who needs formal training first. Objective, repeatable scoring helps when crews are spread across many sites.
Practice vs certification
Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification and not an exam. Under an SNT-TC-1A written practice, the employer certifies technicians after documented training, documented experience, and passing written and practical examinations, with the practical exam performed on real specimens using real equipment. The simulator does not replace that step, and it does not replace NRC radiographer certification or radiation safety training.
Practical NDT improves the preparation. A trainee who has worked through many weld, tube and corrosion scenarios will reach the practical exam more ready, and a working technician can rehearse before recertification or a new assignment. Classroom and lab training still happens, and Atlantis delivers it through its NDT training and certification programmes.
Bring Practical NDT to your West Virginia team
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who also leads Atlantis training. We work with inspection companies, pipeline and plant inspection groups, fabricators and training providers.
A rollout begins with a demo matched to your work. A pipeline inspection contractor might start in the Welding Workshop with RT and PAUT scenarios. A Kanawha Valley plant group might start in the Oil & Gas Site with IRIS and PMI. A terminal operator might start in the Storage Tank environment. After the demo we agree access for trainees, technicians and Level IIIs, and your leads start assigning scenario sets. Pricing is quote on request, depending on team size and scope. Request a West Virginia Practical NDT demo or email info@atlantisndt.com.
If you also track technician certifications, calibration records and job documents, ask about Atlantis ERP; asset owners can ask about Digital Twins. Not sure where to start? Tell us about your West Virginia inspection work and we will suggest a first scenario set.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an online NDT simulator for West Virginia technicians?
Yes. Practical NDT runs in a browser or app, so technicians in Morgantown, Charleston, Huntington, Parkersburg or a field office near a gas plant can practise without travelling to a lab. It is practice, not a replacement for formal training.
Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam?
No. Under an SNT-TC-1A written practice, the practical examination is performed on real specimens with real equipment. Practical NDT helps you prepare and stay current. It does not grant certification.
Can pipeline technicians practise girth weld interpretation?
Yes. The Welding Workshop covers RT, PAUT and UT on weld joints, so technicians can practise recognising pipeline weld defects. Your employer’s procedures, API 1104 and the operator’s requirements govern real inspections.
Which environments fit Kanawha Valley chemical plant work?
The Oil & Gas Site environment (73 jobs) covers corrosion UT, IRIS, LRUT, PMI and weld inspection in a process plant, and the Storage Tank environment covers shell thickness and MFL floor screening.
Does the RT simulator count toward radiation safety training in West Virginia?
No. Because West Virginia is not an Agreement State, radiographers using sealed sources must meet NRC training and certification requirements. The simulator involves no radiation and meets no regulatory requirement.
