NDT Simulator and Pipeline Inspection Practice in Morgantown, West Virginia
Drive a few miles north of Morgantown along the Monongahela River to Maidsville and you reach two coal-fired power stations sitting across the road from each other: one commissioned in the late 1960s, the other in 2011. Both sites are now the focus of large new natural gas-fired generation projects fed by the Marcellus shale, which underlies Monongalia County and much of northern West Virginia. Around them runs a web of gathering lines, compressor stations and interstate transmission pipe, and in town sits a federal energy research laboratory and a university with deep roots in mining, petroleum and natural gas engineering. In other words, Morgantown is where old energy infrastructure that needs careful ageing-asset inspection meets a construction wave of new pipe, turbines and heat recovery equipment that needs weld inspection. Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Practical NDT gives technicians and students in the region an immersive, 3D, game-like place to rehearse that work, from pipeline girth weld inspection to boiler tube and guided-wave screening, with scored feedback in a browser or app. It supports NDT practice in Morgantown alongside real training and exams, not in place of them.
Why Hands-On Practice Matters in the Marcellus Gas and Power Corridor
Gas development and power plant construction both create sharp peaks in inspection demand. When a gathering system expands or a new generating unit is built, pipe crews weld at a fast pace and inspection has to keep up, often with technicians brought in from other states or recently promoted from trainee roles. Girth welds are inspected by radiography or automated ultrasonics, tie-ins and repairs by manual UT, and fabricated spools, supports and pressure parts by MT, PT and VT. At the same time, existing plants and pipelines need corrosion monitoring, thickness surveys, boiler tube inspection during outages and guided-wave screening of lines that are hard to access. A single technician may move between all of those jobs in a year and see some techniques only occasionally.
Getting enough practice is difficult. Pipeline and power plant welds with documented flaws are not easy to come by, flawed spools are heavy and awkward, and calibration blocks belong in the calibration case. Radiography practice on real sources means licensed operators, controlled areas and dosimetry, which rules it out as a casual learning activity. Outage windows are too short and too expensive for learning on the job. Practical NDT lets people build and maintain skill without any of those constraints. A trainee can scan hundreds of simulated weld sections before joining a crew; an experienced technician can refresh LRUT interpretation or IRIS tube assessment before an outage. The safety benefit is real: every mistake made in a simulator is one that is not made in a ditch, on a pipe rack or inside a boiler.
Methods You Can Practice: Phased Array Simulator, LRUT, IRIS and More
Practical NDT covers 12 methods. On the surface: penetrant testing (PT), magnetic particle testing (MT) and visual testing (VT). Volumetric: contact ultrasonic testing (UT), phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT), time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) and radiographic testing (RT). Electromagnetic: eddy current testing (ET) and magnetic flux leakage (MFL). Specialist: long-range ultrasonic testing (LRUT) guided-wave screening, internal rotary inspection system (IRIS) for heat-exchanger and boiler tubes, and positive material identification (PMI) for alloy verification.
For the Morgantown region the most relevant set is weld and corrosion focused. The phased array simulator and TOFD scenarios mirror the encoded ultrasonic inspection used on pipeline girth welds and heavy-wall power plant welds, including how to recognise lack of fusion, root defects, porosity and cracking. Conventional UT covers manual weld inspection and thickness gauging, which is the core of tie-in, repair and corrosion work. RT interpretation scenarios let users study radiographs of pipeline welds without any exposure. LRUT scenarios teach how guided-wave screening finds areas of wall loss along long runs of pipe, road and river crossings and insulated lines, and how to decide where to follow up. IRIS scenarios cover tube inspection in heat exchangers and boilers, which matters for outages at generating stations. PMI practice supports alloy verification on replacement materials in high-temperature service.
These methods sit inside five environments: the NDT Lab (bench specimens and reference blocks), the Welding Workshop (weld coupons and fabrication joints), the Aircraft Hangar (airframe and component inspection), the Oil and Gas Site (weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant) and the Storage Tank (UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank). Job libraries include 52 jobs in the NDT Lab, 52 in the Welding Workshop, 54 in the Aircraft Hangar and 73 at the Oil and Gas Site, supported by 33 guided lessons. For Morgantown users, the Oil and Gas Site and Welding Workshop will carry most of the practice, with the Storage Tank environment covering condensate, produced water and fuel storage.
Built for Every Skill Level
New trainees follow guided fundamentals: what each method detects, how to calibrate and set up, how to scan systematically and how to judge whether an indication is relevant. Difficulty increases as the trainee demonstrates competence, so people who come to NDT from welding, pipefitting or plant operations can progress at a pace that suits them.
Working technicians use rare-defect refreshers between assignments. A technician who has spent a season on thickness surveys might want to rehearse PAUT weld interpretation before joining a construction project; someone who usually shoots radiographs might want to refresh their manual UT before a repair campaign. Practical NDT gives them targeted scenarios and an objective score so they can see where they stand.
Level III inspectors and team leads can build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews objectively against identical simulated welds and components, and find coverage gaps. That is especially useful when a project brings together technicians from several employers or states, and a lead needs a quick, fair picture of who is strongest in which technique. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who also leads Atlantis training.
How It Complements Formal ASNT Training and NDT Practical Exam Preparation
Practical NDT is a skills-practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification, it does not confer a Level I, II or III, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that ASNT SNT-TC-1A and an employer's written practice require. Under SNT-TC-1A, certification is the responsibility of the employer, and the practical exam is performed with real equipment on real parts. That is the rule, and Practical NDT works within it.
What the platform does is give candidates more and better preparation, and give certified technicians a way to stay sharp. For NDT practical exam preparation, a candidate can rehearse the full sequence of a practical exam many times: select the technique, calibrate, scan, record and evaluate against acceptance criteria. It is designed to work alongside Atlantis's Level I, II and III NDT training programmes. Pipeline and power work in the region is also governed by codes and client specifications such as API 1104 for pipeline welding and ASME requirements for boilers and pressure piping; those are market context about the standards local employers and owners work to, not schemes that Practical NDT trains toward or certifies.
Morgantown's Inspection Landscape: Shale Gas, Power Stations and Energy Research
Monongalia County sits in the Marcellus shale fairway, and northern West Virginia is laced with natural gas gathering lines, compressor stations, processing plants and interstate transmission pipelines that move gas east and south. That infrastructure generates constant inspection demand, from new construction weld inspection to integrity work on older pipe. The Oil and Gas Site environment with LRUT, UT, PAUT and PMI, and the Welding Workshop environment with girth-weld style scenarios, are the natural fit.
Power generation is the second pillar. The two coal-fired stations at Maidsville, just north of the city on the Monongahela River, are among the largest generating sites in the region, and both are now linked to major gas-fired expansion plans: one with a permitted combined cycle expansion drawing on Marcellus gas, the other with a utility proposal for a large combined cycle plant on the same site. Existing units need boiler tube inspection, header and piping weld inspection and structural checks during outages; new units will need extensive fabrication and construction weld inspection. IRIS, UT, PAUT, MT and RT interpretation scenarios all apply.
Research and education round out the picture. Morgantown hosts one of the Department of Energy's National Energy Technology Laboratory sites and West Virginia University, whose engineering programmes include petroleum and natural gas engineering and mining. Together they help create a local workforce pipeline of engineers and technicians who will work around gas, power and industrial plants. On the regulatory side, West Virginia is currently a non-Agreement State, so the Nuclear Regulatory Commission licenses the radioactive sources used for industrial gamma radiography in the state, though West Virginia has signalled interest in pursuing an agreement. Simulated RT interpretation lets technicians build image-reading skill without source handling. These organisations and industries are named as regional context only, not as customers or partners.
Hands-On NDT Training in West Virginia: Where Virtual NDT Training Fits
Hands-on NDT training in West Virginia still needs qualified instructors, real specimens and calibrated equipment, and nothing about Practical NDT changes that. What it changes is how much practice a person can get around that training. For people in rural counties, a long drive to a training centre is a real barrier, and small inspection companies cannot easily free people up for extra lab days. With a browser or app, technicians can practise from home, a hotel on a project or a site trailer. Before a course, they can learn the method workflow; during it, they can practise between sessions; after certification, they can keep skills fresh through slow periods between projects. For employers staffing up for a pipeline or power plant job, a short scenario set is a useful, objective check of who is ready for which technique. That is what NDT training online in West Virginia looks like when it is done responsibly: extra practice that supports real instruction.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam?
No. It is a practice and readiness tool. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, the employer certifies personnel according to its written practice, and the practical exam must be taken on real specimens with real equipment. Practical NDT helps candidates prepare and helps certified technicians stay sharp; it does not certify anyone.
What experience level is it for?
All levels. New trainees use 33 guided lessons, working technicians use rare-defect refreshers between assignments, and Level III inspectors or team leads build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews and find coverage gaps.
Can we practise pipeline weld inspection on the simulator?
Yes. The Welding Workshop and Oil and Gas Site environments cover weld inspection by UT, PAUT, TOFD, MT and RT interpretation, plus LRUT screening for long pipe runs. Ask for a pipeline-focused demo.
Is it useful for power plant outage crews?
Yes. IRIS for boiler and exchanger tubes, UT thickness and weld inspection, MT and PMI are all available, so outage crews can rehearse the techniques they need before the unit comes offline. Real outage work still follows the plant's procedures and your written practice.
