NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in Qatar

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Qatar is a country where focused, repeatable practice pays off. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator is an immersive, 3D, game-like platform that runs in a browser or app. A technician opens a job in a virtual NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site or full-size storage tank, sets up the technique, inspects, records what was found and gets a score as soon as the job closes. Qatar's inspection work is concentrated in a few very large places: the LNG trains, gas-to-liquids plants and expansion projects at Ras Laffan, the refinery, fertiliser, steel, aluminium and petrochemical plants at Mesaieed, the Dukhan onshore field on the west coast, offshore platforms and the Halul Island terminal, and Doha's port, airport and construction. Plant integrity standards are demanding, turnarounds are large, and the North Field expansion has added a wave of new construction that needs weld inspection on a huge scale.

This page is the Qatar hub for Practical NDT. It maps where the country's NDT work is, which simulator environments match each cluster, how practice relates to the ASNT SNT-TC-1A and ISO 9712 certification that Qatar employers ask for, which regulator controls radiography, and how to arrange a demo. The Doha Practical NDT page has more city detail.

Where Qatar's NDT work is

Short answer: Qatar's NDT demand is concentrated in four clusters: Ras Laffan Industrial City in the north, with LNG, gas-to-liquids, condensate refining and power; Mesaieed Industrial City in the south, with refining, fertilisers, steel, aluminium and petrochemicals; the oil fields at Dukhan and offshore; and Doha with its port, airport, utilities and construction. The same crews often work all four.

Ras Laffan. Ras Laffan Industrial City is the centre of Qatar's gas economy. Gas from the offshore North Field comes ashore here to LNG trains, gas-to-liquids plants, condensate refineries, helium and sulphur facilities, and large power and water plants, with a port for LNG carriers and a ship repair yard. The North Field expansion projects are adding new LNG trains and associated plant, bringing years of new construction alongside the maintenance of existing units. Cryogenic and high-pressure piping, large-diameter welds, heat exchangers, columns and storage tanks all need inspection, from construction weld inspection with radiography, PAUT and TOFD to in-service corrosion monitoring, IRIS on exchanger tubes and PMI on alloy materials.

Mesaieed. Mesaieed Industrial City south of Doha is Qatar's older industrial hub, with a refinery, petrochemical and fertiliser complexes, a steel plant, an aluminium smelter, natural gas liquids facilities and a port. Turnarounds here bring the classic refinery and petrochemical inspection mix: exchanger bundles, reactors, columns, alloy piping, boilers and tanks.

Dukhan and offshore. The Dukhan field on the west coast is Qatar's main onshore oil field, with gathering systems, degassing stations and pipelines. Offshore, oil fields and the North Field gas platforms are linked by subsea pipelines to Halul Island and to shore. Corrosion monitoring, pipeline inspection and structural work on platforms are routine, and offshore rotations limit time for practice.

Doha and Al Wakrah. Doha hosts most inspection companies, laboratories, EPC offices and owners' headquarters. Hamad Port, Hamad International Airport with its large airline engineering base, power and desalination plants, district cooling and continuous construction add structural, tank, piping and aviation inspection.

Practical NDT across Qatar's cities and industrial areas

Short answer: Doha already has its own Practical NDT page. The table below covers Doha and Qatar's other main inspection centres, with the simulator environments and methods that suit each. Every user can open every environment; the table shows where to start.

City or areaMain local sectorsEnvironments & methods to practise

Offshore and Halul IslandPlatforms, subsea pipelines, export terminal and storageOil & Gas Site, Storage Tank; UT, LRUT, MFL, VT

Doha is where technicians are hired, inducted and certified before they go to Ras Laffan, Mesaieed or offshore. Trainees use guided lessons and the NDT Lab here, and aviation technicians at the airport use the Aircraft Hangar environment with its 54 jobs. Doha employers can also use ASNT training in Doha.

Ras Laffan has two distinct needs. Construction on the expansion projects needs weld inspection on large volumes of piping and structures, so PAUT, TOFD and RT in the Welding Workshop are the core practice. Operating plants need turnaround methods, IRIS, ET and PMI, plus tank surveys. See ASNT training in Ras Laffan and the Ras Laffan NDT ERP page.

Mesaieed turnarounds are dominated by exchangers, alloy piping, reactors and tanks. The Oil & Gas Site environment, with 73 jobs, covers IRIS, ET, PMI and corrosion mapping, and the Storage Tank environment covers shell surveys and MFL floor screening. See ASNT training in Mesaieed.

Dukhan crews work flowlines, gathering stations and pipelines spread over a long field. Corrosion mapping with UT and PAUT and LRUT screening of pipe runs are the main practice areas.

Offshore and Halul Island technicians have long rotations with no lab access. Practising corrosion mapping, LRUT and tank surveys between hitches keeps less-used methods current.

Environments and methods that match Qatar work

Short answer: the simulator has five environments and twelve methods. In Qatar, the Welding Workshop matches LNG expansion construction, the Oil & Gas Site matches operating LNG, GTL, refinery and fertiliser plants, the Storage Tank matches LNG, product and crude tank farms, the Aircraft Hangar matches airport MRO, and the NDT Lab supports trainees.

The five workplace environments are the NDT Lab (bench specimens and reference blocks, 52 jobs), the Welding Workshop (weld coupons and fabrication joints, 52 jobs), the Aircraft Hangar (airframe and component inspection, 54 jobs), the Oil & Gas Site (weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant, 73 jobs) and the Storage Tank (UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank). Thirty-three guided lessons cover the fundamentals. The twelve methods are PT, MT and VT; contact UT, PAUT, TOFD and RT; ET and MFL; and LRUT guided-wave screening, IRIS for heat-exchanger and boiler tubes, and PMI for alloy verification.

LNG work has a few features worth noting. Cryogenic piping and equipment use austenitic stainless steels and nickel alloys, where ultrasonic inspection of welds is harder because of coarse-grained, anisotropic weld metal, and where PMI and PT are routine. The simulator does not model a specific LNG train, but practising PAUT and TOFD on fabrication welds, PT on stainless joints and PMI on alloy lines builds the core habits that work needs. A company's Level III should then set the specific techniques and acceptance criteria its procedures require.

Radiography is still used heavily on construction, often around the clock in shifts, and it is tightly regulated. The simulator lets technicians practise RT technique choice and image interpretation without any source, so radiation licensing does not apply to simulator practice.

Certification, vendor requirements and regulators in Qatar

Short answer: Qatar employers commonly ask for NDT personnel certified to ASNT SNT-TC-1A or ISO 9712 schemes, and QatarEnergy and other owners add their own contractor requirements. Industrial radiography is licensed by the Radiation Protection Department of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. Simulator practice supports all of these but substitutes for none.

Personnel certification. Qatar's inspection workforce comes from many countries and serves owners, joint ventures, EPCs and licensors from around the world. ASNT SNT-TC-1A employer-based certification, ASNT central certification and ISO 9712 schemes such as PCN are all seen, sometimes on the same project. Atlantis training is ASNT SNT-TC-1A only; Atlantis does not train for or issue ISO 9712, PCN or CSWIP certificates.

Owner and contractor requirements. QatarEnergy and its affiliates and joint ventures set engineering standards, contractor approval and quality requirements, including requirements for NDT procedures and personnel, and programmes such as Tawteen aim to localise more of the supply chain. Requirements are owner-specific and change, so work from the documents your contract names. Atlantis claims no approval or registration with QatarEnergy or any other owner, and Practical NDT is not an owner-approved qualification.

Radiation regulation. Qatar's Radiation Protection Law (Decree-Law No. 31 of 2002) and its executive regulations govern radiation sources. The Radiation Protection Department of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change reviews licence applications, inspects facilities and enforces compliance, which covers industrial radiography and other source uses common in the oil and gas sector. Confirm current requirements with the department before any exposure work.

Codes and standards. Qatar's plants are built and maintained mainly to ASME, API, AWS and owner specifications, with ISO and EN standards in some areas and licensor requirements for specialised units. ASME Section V, Section VIII and B31.3, API 650 and 653, API 1104 and AWS D1.1 are everyday references. The simulator teaches method skills, not code acceptance criteria. Atlantis does not offer API 510, 570 or 653 or CWI training.

For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in Qatar

Short answer: trainees use guided lessons and NDT Lab jobs to learn fundamentals; working technicians refresh turnaround methods and rare defects between projects; Level IIIs and team leads assign common scenario sets to compare large, mixed crews objectively before they reach Ras Laffan or Mesaieed.

New trainees. Qatar's industry is developing more local technical talent, and contractors take on new hires from many countries. The 33 guided lessons give each trainee a structured route through set-up, calibration, scanning and interpretation, and NDT Lab jobs can be repeated without using reference blocks or a senior technician's time.

Working technicians. A technician may spend months on construction radiography at Ras Laffan and then be assigned to IRIS or PMI on a Mesaieed turnaround. Rehearsing the next method in the simulator, at the accommodation or at home, is faster and cheaper than relearning it on a live unit.

Level IIIs and team leads. Large crews from different backgrounds are hard to compare from certificates alone. A common scenario set gives an objective view of who is ready for what, which methods need refreshers, and how the crew is improving. The results support conversations with clients but are not a certification.

Practice vs certification

Short answer: the Atlantis Practical NDT simulator is for practice and readiness. It is not a certification, does not issue certificates, is not an owner or operator approval and does not replace the practical examination on real specimens required by ASNT SNT-TC-1A written practices or ISO 9712 schemes.

Under SNT-TC-1A, the employer's written practice governs training, experience and the general, specific and practical examinations under Level III oversight, with the practical exam on real specimens. ISO 9712 bodies set their own training, experience and exams, and Qatar's owners add their own requirements on top. Simulator scores replace none of these. What the simulator offers is preparation: candidates arrive at real exams with established habits, and technicians arrive at real jobs having rehearsed the method. Treat scores as one piece of evidence alongside supervised work and certification.

Construction peaks, turnarounds and heat: why Qatar crews practise virtually

Short answer: Qatar's expansion projects create peaks in weld-inspection demand, turnarounds call for methods technicians rarely use, crews rotate offshore, and summer heat restricts outdoor work. A browser-based simulator lets people practise anywhere and lets employers check readiness before mobilising.

Construction peaks are the first reason. Expansion projects need many weld inspectors at once, and new hires must be brought to a consistent standard quickly. A common set of Welding Workshop jobs gives every new technician the same practice and the Level III the same yardstick. Turnarounds are the second: IRIS, ET and PMI are used heavily for a few weeks and then not at all, so a refresher before mobilising helps. Offshore rotations are the third, with long shifts and no lab access. Safety and climate are the fourth: practising radiography without a source and tank and plant surveys without heat, height or confined spaces takes risk out of learning, while real work keeps every usual control.

ASNT training, consulting and ERP for Qatar employers

Short answer: beyond the simulator, Atlantis offers Qatar companies ASNT SNT-TC-1A training, Level III consulting and an NDT ERP, delivered online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility. There is no Atlantis training centre in Qatar.

Employers whose clients specify SNT-TC-1A can use ASNT SNT-TC-1A training in Qatar for Level I, II and III candidates, led by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, with written practice development. Level III procedure, technique and audit support is available through Qatar consulting, and the Atlantis NDT ERP keeps ASNT and ISO 9712 certificates, calibration records, jobs and reports in one system. City pages cover training in Doha, Ras Laffan and Mesaieed. All are quoted on request.
