NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in Poland
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Poland, in the middle of an energy and industrial build-out, has more NDT work arriving than it has experienced hands to do it. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator is an immersive, 3D, game-like platform that runs in a browser or app. A technician steps into a virtual NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site or full-size storage tank, takes a job, sets up the technique, scans or interprets, and is scored the moment the job is closed. Polish NDT work stretches from the shipyards and refinery of the Tricity and the LNG terminal at Świnoujście, through the country's largest refinery and petrochemical complex at Płock, to the steel, power and chemical plants of Silesia and Lesser Poland, the aviation valley of Subcarpathia and the copper basin of Lower Silesia. On top of that, the first large Baltic offshore wind farms, a floating LNG terminal planned for the Gulf of Gdańsk and preparations for Poland's first nuclear power plant are adding demanding new work. The simulator gives trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs a way to build and keep skills between jobs without booking lab time or consuming specimens.
This is the Poland hub for Practical NDT. It covers where Polish NDT work happens by region, how the simulator's environments and methods fit it, the regulators and certification schemes Polish technicians deal with, and an honest account of what a simulator can and cannot do for certification. Poland's NDT workforce and where the work is
Short answer: Polish NDT work is driven by shipbuilding and ship repair, refining and petrochemicals, gas and LNG infrastructure, coal and gas-fired power, steel and heavy fabrication, offshore wind, aerospace manufacturing and copper mining and smelting. It is concentrated on the Baltic coast, in central Poland around Płock, in the south's industrial belt and in the south-east's aviation cluster.
Pomerania and the Tricity. Gdańsk, Gdynia and Sopot form the Tricity, the heart of Polish maritime industry. Gdańsk has ship and steel-structure yards, one of the largest ship repair groups in the Baltic, the country's second refinery and a deep-water crude oil terminal; Gdynia has commercial, naval and specialised shipyards and a container port. Shipyard work means hull and block welds, offshore and naval structures and ship repair, which call for UT, PAUT, MT, VT and RT every day. The Tricity is also becoming a hub for offshore wind: installation and service bases, tower and foundation component fabrication and the supply chain behind the first Polish Baltic wind farms. Gaz-System is developing a floating storage and regasification terminal in the Gulf of Gdańsk, with its first unit expected toward the end of 2027 and a second planned later. To the west of the Tricity, at Lubiatowo-Kopalino, preparatory work is under way for Poland's first nuclear power plant.
West Pomerania. Świnoujście hosts Poland's first LNG terminal, which has been expanded with additional storage and capacity, and Szczecin and Police combine a port, ship repair, offshore wind component manufacturing and a large chemical and fertiliser complex. The Baltic Pipe gas pipeline from Norway comes ashore on this coast. Terminal and tank inspection, weld inspection on marine and offshore structures and process-plant work in chemicals all feature here.
Mazovia and central Poland. Płock on the Vistula is home to Poland's largest refinery and petrochemical complex, which has been expanding its petrochemical capacity, along with the crude and product pipelines and storage that feed it. Turnarounds at Płock are among the biggest inspection events in the country. Warsaw is the headquarters city for energy companies, engineering contractors and many inspection firms. Large coal and gas-fired power stations, including Bełchatów in the Łódź region and Kozienice in Mazovia, bring boiler, pressure-part and turbine inspection, and new gas-fired units have added fresh construction work.
Silesia and Lesser Poland. The south's industrial belt around Katowice, Gliwice, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Kraków and Opole combines coal mining, integrated and long-product steelmaking, power stations, boiler and pressure-equipment manufacturing, chemical plants and automotive manufacturing. Boiler tube surveys, weld inspection on pressure parts, structural MT on mining equipment, UT of forgings and castings and ET on automotive parts all happen within a short drive of each other.
Subcarpathia and the east. The area around Rzeszów is known as Aviation Valley, with aero-engine and component manufacturing and a dense supplier network. Mielec produces aircraft and helicopters, and Świdnik near Lublin has a long helicopter manufacturing tradition. Aerospace NDT here means penetrant and eddy current inspection, UT of metallic and composite parts and radiography of castings under strict aerospace procedures.
Lower Silesia and elsewhere. The Legnica-Głogów copper basin has mines, concentrators and smelters with heavy plant, tanks and structures. Wrocław and Poznań add automotive, rail vehicle and engineering manufacturing, Włocławek and Kędzierzyn-Koźle have large chemical plants, and Poland's gas transmission and crude pipeline networks run across the whole country.
Practical NDT by region in Poland
Atlantis does not yet have Practical NDT pages for individual Polish cities, so this hub covers the main centres directly. The table maps each to the environments and methods that match its everyday jobs.

Gdańsk and Gdynia. Shipyards and offshore fabricators need consistent weld inspectors, increasingly with PAUT and TOFD alongside UT, MT and RT. The Welding Workshop is the core for them. The Gdańsk refinery and crude terminal map to the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank environments, and offshore wind and the future FSRU will add both. Atlantis also has an ASNT NDT training page for Gdańsk for employers who work to US codes, plus radiographic testing in Gdańsk and Gdańsk ERP pages.
Szczecin, Police and Świnoujście. LNG and chemical storage generate tank shell surveys and floor screening, while offshore wind component manufacturing and ship repair need weld inspection. PMI and corrosion work feature in the chemical complex.
Płock. Refinery and petrochemical turnarounds require IRIS on exchanger bundles, PMI on alloy circuits, TOFD and PAUT on vessel welds, corrosion mapping on piping, LRUT on long pipe racks and MFL on tank floors, all present in the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank environments.
Warsaw and the Łódź region. Power station outages need boiler tube thickness surveys, IRIS on condenser and feedwater heater tubes, UT of pressure-part welds and MT and PT on turbine and structural components. New gas-fired units add construction-phase weld inspection.
Silesia and Lesser Poland. The south's mix of steel, boilers, mining and automotive makes the NDT Lab and Welding Workshop the most used environments, with ET for automotive parts and IRIS for power plant tubes.
Subcarpathia. Aero-engine and airframe production make the Aircraft Hangar the key environment, with eddy current, penetrant and UT jobs that match daily work in the aviation valley.
Lower Silesia. Copper smelters and concentrators run heavy plant, large tanks and structures in aggressive service, while automotive and rail manufacturing add component NDT.
Environments and methods that match Polish work
Direct answer: the Atlantis Practical NDT simulator has five environments, twelve methods and 33 guided lessons. In Poland the Welding Workshop serves shipbuilding, offshore wind and heavy fabrication; the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank serve refining, petrochemicals, LNG and power; the Aircraft Hangar serves the aviation valley; and the NDT Lab builds fundamentals for everyone.
Welding Workshop (52 jobs). Weld coupons and fabrication joints for RT film and digital image interpretation, UT and PAUT detection and sizing, TOFD, MT and VT against acceptance criteria. This is the workhorse for Tricity and Szczecin shipyards, offshore wind tower and foundation fabricators, boiler and pressure equipment makers and steel structure fabricators.
Oil & Gas Site (73 jobs). Weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant: contact UT and PAUT corrosion mapping, TOFD on pressure welds, IRIS internal rotary UT on exchanger and boiler tubes, LRUT guided-wave screening on long pipe runs and PMI alloy verification. It mirrors turnaround work at Płock and Gdańsk, chemical plants and power station outages.
Storage Tank. UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank, for refinery and terminal tank farms, crude and product storage along the pipeline network, chemical storage and LNG-related tankage.
Aircraft Hangar (54 jobs). Airframe and component inspection with eddy current, penetrant and UT, matching Subcarpathia's aerospace manufacturing, helicopter production and airline and military maintenance.
NDT Lab (52 jobs). Bench specimens and reference blocks for calibration, probe handling, sensitivity, scan coverage and indication recognition. It suits new trainees, forging and casting inspectors and anyone preparing for a practical examination.
Across the twelve methods, surface methods (PT, MT, VT) cover finished parts and structural welds; volumetric methods (UT contact, PAUT, TOFD, RT) carry weld and corrosion assessment; electromagnetic methods (ET, MFL) serve aerospace, tubes and tank floors; and the specialist techniques (LRUT, IRIS, PMI) reflect refinery, chemical and power plant integrity programmes.
Regulators and requirements Polish technicians meet
Short answer: Polish NDT personnel are normally certified to PN-EN ISO 9712 through accredited certification bodies; pressure equipment is overseen by the Office of Technical Inspection (UDT); and industrial radiography falls under the Atomic Law, with the National Atomic Energy Agency (PAA) as regulator. Practical NDT is practice for any of these frameworks and replaces none of them.
Personnel certification. Poland applies PN-EN ISO 9712. Several accredited certification bodies operate. UDT-CERT, the personnel certification body of the Office of Technical Inspection, runs an NDT certification programme recognised under the ICNDT multilateral recognition agreement, and other accredited bodies certify NDT personnel as well. The Polish Society for Non-Destructive Testing and Technical Diagnostics represents the technical community. Employers working for US-owned operators, on ASME and API projects or in the US-designed nuclear programme may also keep ASNT SNT-TC-1A based written practices. That is market context only. Atlantis training aligns with ASNT SNT-TC-1A only, and Atlantis does not train toward, certify or administer PN-EN ISO 9712 or UDT-CERT certification. Practical NDT is practice for whichever scheme you work under.
Pressure equipment and technical inspection. New pressure equipment is placed on the market under the Pressure Equipment Directive 2014/68/EU. Equipment in use, including boilers, pressure vessels and many tanks and lifting devices, falls under the Act on Technical Inspection and is supervised by the Office of Technical Inspection (Urząd Dozoru Technicznego, UDT), with the Transport Technical Inspection (TDT) covering transport-related equipment. Ships and offshore structures are classed by classification societies such as the Polish Register of Shipping. Confirm current requirements with UDT or your inspection body.
Radiation safety. The National Atomic Energy Agency (Państwowa Agencja Atomistyki, PAA) regulates nuclear safety and radiation protection under the Atomic Law. Industrial radiography requires the appropriate permits and a radiation protection officer, and the PAA is also the nuclear safety regulator for the planned nuclear power plant. Practical NDT's RT jobs involve no radiation source and count toward no radiation protection requirement.
Codes and standards in daily use. Polish fabrication commonly references the PN-EN ISO weld testing and acceptance standards, EN 13445 and EN 13480, and ASME and API codes for export, refinery and US-designed projects; shipyards and offshore wind fabricators work to classification and project specifications. Mentioned as context only.
For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in Poland
Practical NDT adapts to three kinds of user, each with a distinct challenge in Poland.
New trainees. Poland's build-out means many new entrants: welders and fitters moving into inspection, graduates of technical schools and engineering faculties, and technicians retraining from mining and other declining sectors. The hardest thing to get early is enough hands-on time. Guided fundamentals in the NDT Lab let a trainee repeat calibration, angle-beam setup, scan coverage and indication interpretation with instant feedback, so a real block is never the first attempt. It is good NDT practical exam preparation, with the clear understanding that the real exam is taken on real specimens.
Working technicians. Polish technicians move between shipyard production, refinery turnarounds, power plant outages and offshore wind fabrication, and many also work abroad in Germany, Scandinavia and the North Sea for part of the year. A technician who has spent months on hull welds may be asked to run IRIS on exchanger bundles at Płock or TOFD on thick monopile welds. Rare-defect refreshers between assignments, on lack of fusion, laminations, hydrogen cracking, stress corrosion cracking and tube pitting, help them arrive ready.
Level IIIs and team leads. Level IIIs can build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews objectively and find coverage gaps before a campaign. When a turnaround, outage or offshore project brings together technicians from different employers and countries, a consistent scenario set gives a like-for-like view of readiness and helps confirm that new procedures are understood before they reach the field.
Practice vs certification
Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification. It does not grant a level under PN-EN ISO 9712, ASNT SNT-TC-1A or any employer's written practice, it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens those schemes require, and it does not satisfy any PAA or UDT requirement. What it adds is realistic repetition: more chances to set up, scan, interpret and get feedback than a lab timetable or specimen store allows. It complements formal NDT training and on-the-job experience; the formal practical exam remains the step that counts.
Why virtual NDT training suits Polish employers right now
Direct answer: Poland's offshore wind, LNG, petrochemical and nuclear programmes are raising demand for skilled NDT technicians faster than lab time and experienced supervisors can grow. A browser-based ultrasonic testing simulator and phased array simulator give employers a scalable way to build and check skills before people reach critical work.
The first Polish Baltic wind farms have moved through foundation installation, and more are planned; the Gdańsk FSRU and the nuclear programme will bring years of fabrication and construction inspection. Each of these projects needs technicians who can perform PAUT, TOFD and UT on thick welds reliably, and who understand the documentation discipline that international projects expect. Training enough people the traditional way means lab time, supervisors and flawed specimens, all of which are scarce. With the simulator, technicians practise at home, in project accommodation or in the shop office, subject to company IT rules. Supervisors see scores rather than self-assessments. A Level III can send one scenario set to every crew on a campaign, whether they are based in Gdańsk, Płock or Katowice. None of this replaces real equipment time, but it makes real time count for more. The simulator's jobs and feedback are presented in English; ask during the demo if Polish-language support matters for your team.
Who in Poland typically looks at Practical NDT
Groups that tend to find a simulator useful in Poland include shipyards and ship repair yards; offshore wind tower, foundation and component fabricators; inspection service companies that staff refinery, chemical and power plant outages; boiler, pressure equipment and steel structure manufacturers; aerospace manufacturers and maintenance organisations; technical schools and training providers that want more practice time; and individual technicians preparing for an exam, a return to a method or work abroad. These are industry descriptions, not a customer list; Atlantis does not name customers on this page.
For Polish employers who work to ASME and API codes or for US-owned operators and OEMs, Atlantis also offers ASNT SNT-TC-1A aligned NDT training online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility, and Level III consulting on procedures, techniques and written practices. The Atlantis ERP can record PN-EN ISO 9712 certificates alongside ASNT-based ones for companies managing mixed crews.
