NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in Oman
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Oman is a country where inspection crews are spread across enormous distances: desert oilfields and gas plants in the interior, refineries at Muscat, Sohar and Duqm, an LNG plant on the coast near Sur, a heavy-industry port at Sohar, and ports and new industry at Duqm and Salalah. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator is an immersive, 3D, game-like platform that runs in a browser or app. A technician enters a virtual NDT lab, welding workshop, aircraft hangar, oil and gas site or full-size storage tank, takes a job, sets up the technique, scans or interprets, and is scored the moment the job is closed. For Omani employers whose people may be several hundred kilometres from the nearest lab, it is a way to keep skills current between rotations without moving specimens or people.
This is the Oman hub for Practical NDT. It describes where Omani NDT work happens, which simulator environments and methods fit it, the regulators and certification expectations technicians in Oman work under, and an honest account of what a simulator can and cannot do for certification. To see it applied to your own jobs, request a Practical NDT demo for Oman.
Oman's NDT workforce and where the work is
Short answer: Omani NDT work is driven by onshore oil and gas production, including thermal and other enhanced recovery projects, gas processing, three refineries, LNG export, petrochemicals and plastics, aluminium and steel, ports and ship repair, power and desalination, and a growing pipeline of hydrogen and new-energy projects. It stretches from the interior fields to Batinah, Muscat, Sur, Duqm and Dhofar.
The interior oil and gas fields. Petroleum Development Oman runs the large Block 6 concession, with production centres and stations across the north and south of the country, from Fahud, Yibal and Qarn Alam to Nimr and Marmul. Other operators run major gas developments such as Khazzan and Ghazeer in central Oman and thermal enhanced oil recovery projects that use steam injection. That mix creates a wide spread of inspection: corrosion surveys on flowlines and gathering systems, high-temperature steam piping, gas-plant pressure vessels and exchangers, produced-water systems, crude storage, and weld inspection on a constant flow of new facilities and pipelines. Crews work long rotations in camps far from any training centre.
Muscat. The capital area hosts the Mina Al Fahal refinery and crude export terminal, operator and contractor headquarters, engineering offices, inspection company bases, the Rusayl and other industrial estates, and the international airport with its aircraft maintenance activity. It is where many technicians are recruited, trained and mobilised from.
Sohar and Batinah. The Port of Sohar and its free zone form one of the Gulf's larger heavy-industry clusters: a refinery operated by OQ, an integrated plastics complex, an aluminium smelter, steel and iron plants, chemical and fertiliser plants, tank terminals and power and desalination plants. Process-plant turnarounds, fabrication and erection work, tank terminals and smelter maintenance all generate NDT within a short distance of each other.
Sur and Qalhat. The Oman LNG complex at Qalhat near Sur liquefies gas piped from the interior for export, alongside fertiliser production in the Sur industrial area. LNG trains mean cryogenic piping and tanks, rotating equipment and pressure-vessel inspection during planned shutdowns.
Duqm. The Special Economic Zone at Duqm has grown around a port, a dry dock and ship repair yard, the OQ8 refinery (a 230,000 barrel-a-day joint venture between OQ and Kuwait Petroleum International that reached full capacity in 2024), crude storage at nearby Ras Markaz, and a pipeline of new-energy and hydrogen projects. Duqm combines refinery turnaround work, ship repair weld inspection and construction-phase NDT.
Salalah and Dhofar. Salalah's container port and free zone host methanol, gas processing and other industrial plants, and the south of the country is a focus for future hydrogen and renewable projects. Process-plant integrity, storage and port infrastructure all need inspection.
Practical NDT by region in Oman
Direct answer: Atlantis does not yet have Practical NDT pages for individual Omani cities, so this hub covers the main work centres directly. The table maps each area to the simulator environments and methods that match its everyday jobs, and the notes below link the Oman pages Atlantis already has for training, consulting and ERP.
| City or area | Main local sectors | Environments & methods to practise |
|---|---|---|
| Interior fields (Fahud, Qarn Alam, Nimr, Marmul, Khazzan) | Oil production, gas processing, thermal EOR steam systems, flowlines, crude storage | Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank, Welding Workshop; UT, PAUT, LRUT, MFL, RT |
| Muscat | Refining, crude export terminal, headquarters and inspection bases, industrial estates, aircraft maintenance | NDT Lab, Oil & Gas Site, Aircraft Hangar; UT, IRIS, PMI, ET, PT |
| Sohar | Refining, plastics, aluminium, steel, chemicals, tank terminals, power and desalination | Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank, Welding Workshop; IRIS, PMI, TOFD, PAUT, MFL |
| Sur and Qalhat | LNG liquefaction and export, fertilisers | Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank; UT, TOFD, PAUT, PMI, IRIS |
| Duqm | Refinery, dry dock and ship repair, port, crude storage, new-energy construction | Welding Workshop, Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank; PAUT, TOFD, UT, MT, RT, IRIS |
| Salalah | Port and free zone, methanol and gas processing, storage | Oil & Gas Site, Storage Tank, NDT Lab; UT, MFL, PMI, PT |
Interior fields. Upstream integrity in Oman is a volume game: thousands of thickness readings, long flowline networks screened by guided wave, and tank floors screened by MFL. The Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank environments let technicians practise those jobs repeatedly, and the Welding Workshop covers the RT, UT and PAUT weld inspection that new stations and pipelines need. Steam-injection projects add high-temperature piping where careful UT technique matters.
Muscat. Inspection companies headquartered in Muscat can roll the simulator out to their whole workforce from one place, and refinery, terminal and aviation teams find IRIS, PMI, ET and PT practice directly relevant. See NDT training in Muscat and the Muscat NDT consulting page.
Sohar. The port's mix of refinery, plastics, smelter, steel and tank terminals makes it a strong fit for the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank, with TOFD and PAUT for vessel welds. See NDT training in Sohar, the Sohar consulting page and the Sohar ERP page.
Sur and Qalhat. LNG shutdowns call for pressure-vessel and piping weld inspection, exchanger tube work and alloy verification, all represented in the Oil & Gas Site, with tank surveys in the Storage Tank environment.
Duqm. Ship repair and new construction need consistent weld inspectors, so the Welding Workshop is central, with the Oil & Gas Site for refinery turnarounds. See the Duqm consulting page and the Duqm NDT ERP page.
Salalah. Process plants and storage around the port suit the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank, with the NDT Lab for building fundamentals in newer staff. See the Salalah NDT ERP page.
Environments and methods that match Omani work
Direct answer: the Atlantis Practical NDT simulator has five environments, twelve methods and 33 guided lessons. In Oman the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank cover upstream, gas, refining and LNG integrity; the Welding Workshop covers construction, pipelines and ship repair; the NDT Lab builds fundamentals; and the Aircraft Hangar covers aviation maintenance.
Oil & Gas Site (73 jobs). Weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant: contact UT and PAUT corrosion mapping, TOFD on pressure welds, IRIS internal rotary UT on exchanger and boiler tubes, LRUT guided-wave screening on long pipe runs and PMI alloy verification. It mirrors work at PDO production stations, gas plants, the Muscat, Sohar and Duqm refineries and the LNG trains at Qalhat.
Storage Tank. UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank. Oman has crude tanks at production centres and export terminals, product tanks at the refineries, large terminals at Sohar and crude storage near Duqm, so tank practice applies widely.
Welding Workshop (52 jobs). Weld coupons and fabrication joints for RT film and digital image interpretation, UT and PAUT detection and sizing, TOFD, MT and VT against acceptance criteria. It serves pipeline and station construction, fabrication yards in Muscat and Sohar, and ship repair at Duqm.
NDT Lab (52 jobs). Bench specimens and reference blocks for calibration, probe handling, sensitivity, scan coverage and indication recognition. It is the starting point for trainees, including the many young Omanis entering technical careers, and a quick check for experienced technicians before a practical exam.
Aircraft Hangar (54 jobs). Airframe and component inspection with eddy current, penetrant and UT, relevant to aircraft maintenance in Muscat and to technicians who cross between aviation and industrial work.
Across the twelve methods, surface methods (PT, MT, VT) cover structural and attachment welds; volumetric methods (UT contact, PAUT, TOFD, RT) carry weld quality and corrosion assessment; electromagnetic methods (ET, MFL) cover aviation parts, tubes and tank floors; and the specialist techniques (LRUT, IRIS, PMI) reflect the integrity programmes Omani operators run on pipelines, exchangers and alloy circuits.
Regulators and requirements Omani technicians meet
Short answer: in Oman, radioactive sources used in industrial radiography are licensed by the Environment Authority through its radiation protection function; personnel certification follows the operator's or contractor's requirements, where ASNT SNT-TC-1A based written practices and ISO 9712 certification are both widely used; and design and inspection follow operator specifications and ASME, API and AWS codes.
Radiation safety. The Environment Authority regulates radiation protection and the safety and security of radiation sources in Oman. Companies that import, store, transport or use radioactive sources for industrial radiography need licences and permits, and the authority also issues radiation protection supervisor licences. Customs, storage and transport permissions involve other agencies as well. Confirm current requirements directly with the Environment Authority before planning radiography work. The RT jobs in Practical NDT involve no radiation source and count toward no Omani radiation licence; they are technique and image interpretation practice only.
Personnel certification. Omani operators and their main contractors set NDT personnel requirements in contracts and vendor qualification documents. Technicians in Oman typically hold ASNT SNT-TC-1A based certifications under an employer's written practice, ISO 9712 certifications from recognised certification bodies, or both, and operators may add their own competence assessments for specific techniques. The specification on your contract decides. Atlantis training aligns with ASNT SNT-TC-1A only, and Atlantis does not train toward, certify or administer ISO 9712 or any operator approval. Practical NDT is practice for whichever scheme you work under.
In-Country Value. Oman's In-Country Value programme encourages operators and contractors to develop Omani talent, which puts emphasis on training, upskilling and documented competence for national technicians. A simulator can support that development work as a practice tool; it is not an ICV credential and Atlantis makes no claim about how any programme scores it.
Codes and standards. Omani projects commonly reference operator engineering specifications together with ASME Section V, VIII and B31.3, API 650 and 653 for tanks, API 1104 for pipelines and AWS D1.1 for structures; ship repair at Duqm follows classification society rules. These are mentioned as working context only. Real acceptance criteria always come from your procedure and your Level III.
For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in Oman
Direct answer: Practical NDT adapts to three kinds of user. New trainees get guided fundamentals, working technicians get rare-defect refreshers between assignments, and Level IIIs and team leads build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews objectively and find coverage gaps before a campaign.
New trainees. Oman has a steady intake of young nationals moving into technical careers alongside an experienced expatriate workforce. For a new trainee the hardest thing to get is hands-on repetition. Guided fundamentals in the NDT Lab let them practise calibration, angle-beam setup, scan coverage and indication interpretation with instant feedback, so a real reference block is never the first attempt. It is good NDT practical exam preparation, with the clear understanding that the real exam is taken on real specimens.
Working technicians. An Omani technician might spend a rotation on flowline thickness surveys in the south, then be sent to a refinery turnaround at Sohar that needs IRIS on exchanger bundles, or to a ship repair job at Duqm that needs PAUT on hull welds. Rare-defect refreshers on lack of fusion, hydrogen-induced cracking, stress corrosion cracking, tube pitting and wall loss help them arrive ready rather than relearning on site.
Level IIIs and team leads. With crews spread across interior stations, coastal plants and Duqm, a Level III cannot watch everyone work. Sending one scenario set to every technician and comparing results gives an objective, like-for-like view of readiness, helps show which crews need support before a shutdown and checks that a new procedure has been understood before it reaches the field.
Practice vs certification
Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification. It does not grant a level under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, ISO 9712, an operator's competence scheme or any employer's written practice. It does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that those schemes require, and it does not satisfy any Environment Authority radiation requirement. What it adds is realistic repetition: more chances to set up, scan, interpret and get feedback than a lab timetable or specimen store allows. It complements formal NDT training and on-the-job experience; the formal practical exam remains the step that counts.
Why virtual NDT training suits Omani employers
Direct answer: Oman's inspection work is spread over long distances, its workforce development goals reward documented skills building, and new projects at Duqm and Sohar keep demand rising. A browser-based ultrasonic testing simulator and phased array simulator let employers build and check skills wherever their people are.
Distance is the deciding factor for many Omani employers. A field technician on a rotation in the south may be a day's drive from Muscat; bringing them to a lab for refresher practice costs travel, accommodation and lost field days. The simulator runs on a laptop in camp or a site office, subject to company IT rules, so practice happens during the rotation. Turnarounds at the refineries and LNG plant bring together crews from several contractors, and a common scenario set gives a quick, fair picture of who is ready for IRIS, TOFD or PAUT. For training providers and employers developing Omani technicians, the scoring and progress tracking give trainees and supervisors a shared view of what has been practised. None of this replaces time on real equipment; it makes that time count for more.
The simulator's jobs and feedback are presented in English. If Arabic or another language matters for your team, ask about it during the demo.
Who in Oman typically looks at Practical NDT
Groups that tend to find a simulator useful in Oman include inspection service companies supporting upstream, gas, refinery and LNG work; fabrication and construction contractors in Muscat, Sohar and Duqm; ship repair yards; technical colleges and training providers developing national technicians; aviation maintenance teams; and individual technicians preparing for an exam, a new method or a move into advanced UT. These are industry descriptions, not a customer list; Atlantis does not name customers on this page, and the operators mentioned are local industry context only.
For Omani employers working to ASME and API codes or for US-owned contractors and OEMs, Atlantis also offers ASNT SNT-TC-1A aligned NDT training in Oman, delivered online, live-virtual or onsite at the client's facility, and Level III NDT consulting for Oman on procedures, techniques and written practices. The Atlantis NDT ERP for Oman can record ISO 9712 certificates and operator approvals alongside ASNT-based ones for companies managing mixed crews, and Atlantis also has pages on radiographic testing in Oman and an asset integrity digital twin for Oman.

Yes. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator runs in a browser or app, so it works anywhere in Oman with a connection, from Muscat and Sohar to interior field camps, Duqm and Salalah. There is no physical centre to visit.
Does Practical NDT count toward ASNT, ISO 9712 or operator approval in Oman?
No. It is practice only. Certifications and operator competence assessments need their own training, experience and examinations, including practical tests on real specimens or equipment. The simulator helps you prepare.
Can field technicians use it during a rotation?
Yes, where company IT rules and the camp connection allow. It runs in a browser or app, so practice can happen in camp accommodation or a site office between shifts.
Is it useful for refinery and LNG shutdowns in Sohar, Duqm or Qalhat?
Yes for the underlying skills: IRIS on exchanger tubes, PMI on alloy piping, TOFD and PAUT on vessel welds and corrosion mapping in the Oil & Gas Site. Shutdown procedures and acceptance criteria still come from the operator, your employer and your Level III.
Does it help with ship repair weld inspection at Duqm?
Yes. The Welding Workshop covers UT, PAUT, TOFD, MT, VT and RT interpretation on fabrication welds. Classification society requirements still apply on real work.
Does it include radiography, and does that count toward a radiation licence?
It includes RT technique and image interpretation practice with no radiation source. It does not count toward any Environment Authority licence or radiation protection requirement.
Can it support Omani workforce development?
It can be part of a development plan as a practice tool, with scores and progress visible to trainees and supervisors. It is not a qualification or credential in its own right.
What experience level is it for?
All levels: guided fundamentals for new trainees, rare-defect refreshers for working technicians, and scenario building and crew benchmarking for Level IIIs and team leads.
Is the simulator available in Arabic?
The simulator's jobs and feedback are presented in English. Ask during the demo if Arabic or another language matters for your team.
