NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in Ohio
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Ohio is one of the busiest inspection states in the country to use it in. Practical NDT is an immersive, 3D, game-like simulator that runs in a browser or app. Technicians inspect realistic virtual assets, from weld coupons, castings and pipe spools to pressure vessels, heat-exchanger tubes, airframe components and a full-size storage tank, using virtual probes, yokes, penetrant kits and eddy current coils, and each job ends with an immediate score and clear feedback. Ohio's inspection economy is unusually broad. It has four crude oil refineries at Lima, Toledo and Canton, two nuclear plants on Lake Erie, one of the country's largest jet engine manufacturing and aerospace research clusters around Cincinnati, Dayton and Cleveland, a steel and pipe-making heritage that still runs from Cleveland through the Mahoning Valley to Canton and Middletown, polymer and advanced materials industries in Akron, automotive and battery manufacturing around Columbus, and gas processing and pipelines in the Utica shale counties of eastern Ohio. Technicians here move between those sectors regularly, and methods they do not use every week fade quickly. Practical NDT gives trainees a way to build fundamentals before they reach a plant, and gives working technicians and Level IIIs a way to rehearse, refresh and benchmark without consuming physical specimens, calibration blocks or scarce lab time.
Ohio's NDT workforce and where the work is
Ohio's inspection work breaks into clear sub-regions, each with its own character.
Northeast Ohio (Cleveland, Akron, Canton, Youngstown). This is the state's heavy-industry core. Cleveland's flats and lakefront hold integrated steelmaking, forging and fabrication, port and Great Lakes shipping operations, and NASA's Glenn Research Center. Akron is a centre for polymers, tyres and advanced materials, with the pressure equipment and process piping that come with chemical manufacturing. Canton has a refinery and a long history of specialty steel and bearing production. The Mahoning Valley around Youngstown remains a centre for seamless tube and pipe production, metal fabrication and service work for the oil and gas industry. The Perry nuclear plant sits on the lakeshore east of Cleveland.
Northwest Ohio (Toledo, Lima). Toledo has two refineries on its eastern side, a busy Lake Erie port, glass and automotive manufacturing, and the Davis-Besse nuclear plant near Oak Harbor. Lima to the south has a large refinery and a defence vehicle manufacturing plant. Refinery turnarounds in Toledo and Lima are among the biggest regular events in the state's NDT calendar.
Southwest Ohio (Cincinnati, Dayton, Middletown). Jet engine design and manufacturing in the Cincinnati area, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and its research laboratories in Dayton, and a network of aerospace suppliers make this Ohio's aviation and aerospace heart. Steelmaking in Middletown, chemical plants along the Ohio River and power generation complete the mix.
Central Ohio (Columbus). Central Ohio has become a manufacturing growth region: automotive assembly and electric-vehicle battery plants to the northwest and southwest of Columbus, semiconductor fab construction east of the city, data centres and a major inland logistics hub. Construction of these facilities drives structural steel, piping and weld inspection.
Eastern and southeastern Ohio. The Utica and Point Pleasant shale play has brought gas gathering systems, processing and fractionation plants, compressor stations and interstate pipelines to counties along the Pennsylvania and West Virginia borders, and the Ohio River valley hosts power plants, chemical and polymer plants and barge terminals.

Cleveland. Cleveland inspectors work in steel mills, forge shops, structural and pressure vessel fabricators, and on port and lakefront infrastructure, with outage work at the Perry nuclear plant and aerospace research support nearby. Thick welds and heavy sections put a premium on ultrasonic skills, including PAUT and TOFD. The Welding Workshop is the natural daily practice space, with the NDT Lab for MT and PT on forgings and the Aircraft Hangar for technicians supporting aerospace work.
Toledo. With two refineries on the east side of the metro area, Toledo has one of the most concentrated refinery inspection markets in the Great Lakes region, plus port terminals and the Davis-Besse nuclear plant a short drive east. The Oil & Gas Site environment's IRIS, PMI, thickness and guided-wave jobs match turnaround packages closely, and the Storage Tank environment covers API 653 shell and floor work across the refinery and terminal tank farms.
Cincinnati. Greater Cincinnati is home to major jet engine manufacturing and a large supplier base producing rotating and structural engine parts. Penetrant, eddy current and ultrasonic inspection of critical engine hardware dominate, usually under NAS 410 style qualification. The Aircraft Hangar and NDT Lab fit best. Chemical plants and power stations along the Ohio River add pressure equipment work suited to the Oil & Gas Site.
Akron. Akron's polymer, tyre and advanced materials industries run reactors, pressure vessels, heat exchangers and process piping that need routine thickness surveys, PMI and exchanger tube inspection. Manufacturing equipment and welded structures add weld inspection. The Oil & Gas Site covers the process plant side, and the Welding Workshop and NDT Lab cover the rest.
Youngstown. The Mahoning Valley's steel and tube mills make seamless and welded pipe for the energy industry, and local fabricators and service companies support drilling, gathering and processing across the Utica shale. Ultrasonic, eddy current and magnetic particle inspection of pipe and tube, and weld inspection on fabricated equipment, are everyday work. Welding Workshop and Oil & Gas Site scenarios line up well.
Columbus. Central Ohio's surge of manufacturing construction, including automotive and battery plants, semiconductor fab construction and data centres, brings large volumes of structural steel, process piping and weld inspection. Many new inspectors are entering the field here, so NDT Lab fundamentals and Welding Workshop weld inspection are the natural starting point, with Oil & Gas Site piping scenarios for those working on ultra-pure and process piping systems.
Dayton. Dayton's identity is tied to aviation. Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, its research laboratories and the aerospace suppliers around them create demand for eddy current, ultrasonic and penetrant inspection of aircraft structure and components, as well as materials research that relies on advanced NDT. The Aircraft Hangar environment is the obvious practice space, supported by the NDT Lab.
Canton. Canton combines a refinery with specialty steel, bearing and heavy manufacturing. Refinery work suits the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank environments, while ultrasonic and magnetic particle inspection of bar, forgings and machined parts suits NDT Lab practice. Canton technicians who move between the refinery and the mills benefit from keeping both skill sets sharp.
Environments and methods that match Ohio work
Practical NDT's five environments and twelve methods map onto Ohio's industries as follows.
Oil & Gas Site. 73 jobs covering weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant. Refinery technicians in Lima, Toledo and Canton, chemical plant inspectors in Akron and along the Ohio River, and gas processing crews in eastern Ohio get IRIS tube inspection, PMI alloy verification, UT thickness and corrosion surveys and LRUT guided-wave screening here.
Storage Tank. UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank, matching API 653 inspection at refineries, fuel terminals and chemical tank farms.
Welding Workshop. 52 jobs on weld coupons and fabrication joints, with VT, MT, contact UT, PAUT, TOFD and RT interpretation. This fits Ohio's steel fabrication, pressure vessel shops, pipe mills, new plant construction and nuclear outage weld examinations.
Aircraft Hangar. 54 jobs on airframe and component inspection. Cincinnati's engine suppliers and Dayton's aerospace and military aviation community get eddy current, ultrasonic and penetrant practice.
NDT Lab. 52 jobs on bench specimens and reference blocks, plus 33 guided lessons. Ohio's many new inspection entrants from welding, machining and manufacturing programmes should start here, and experienced technicians use it to keep calibration and MT and PT technique sharp.
Regulators and requirements Ohio technicians meet
Ohio is an NRC Agreement State. The Ohio Department of Health, through its radiation protection programmes, licenses and inspects most users of radioactive materials in the state and registers and inspects x-ray equipment. Ohio's rules for industrial radiography cover licensing, radiation safety programmes, surveys and monitoring, equipment, radiographer training and certification, and transport of radiography sources. The NRC's Region III office oversees the Davis-Besse and Perry nuclear plants. Confirm current requirements with the Ohio Department of Health before planning radiography work.
Boilers and unfired pressure vessels are regulated by the Boiler Section of the Division of Industrial Compliance within the Ohio Department of Commerce, which enforces Ohio Revised Code chapter 4104 and the related administrative rules and requires construction, installation, repair and alteration to follow ASME and National Board requirements. Intrastate gas pipeline safety is overseen by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, with PHMSA covering interstate gas and hazardous liquid lines.
Ohio inspectors work every week to ASME Section V, VIII and I, ASME B31.1 and B31.3, API 510, 570 and 653, API 1104 for pipelines and API specifications for oil country tubular goods, and AWS D1.1 for structural steel. Aerospace employers typically qualify personnel to NAS 410; we mention this only as context for what Ohio employers may require. Atlantis frames its own training around ASNT SNT-TC-1A, and Practical NDT is practice that supports technicians under any scheme, not a qualification under any of them.
For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in Ohio
New trainees. Ohio's manufacturing and construction growth is pulling many new people into inspection, from welders and machinists to veterans. Practical NDT's 33 guided lessons and NDT Lab environment let newcomers learn how each method works, practise calibration and scanning, and see what real indications look like before their formal classroom and on-the-job training begins.
Working technicians. An Ohio inspector might work a refinery turnaround in Toledo, a pipe mill in Youngstown and a nuclear outage at Perry within the same year. Rare-defect refreshers let you rehearse the method and defect type you are about to face, whether that is a crack in an engine component, stress corrosion cracking in exchanger tubes, or a lack-of-fusion indication in a thick weld. Instant scoring shows exactly where your technique needs work.
Level IIIs and team leads. Ohio Level IIIs often run mixed crews of in-house inspectors and contract technicians across several sites. Practical NDT lets you build and assign scenario sets that reflect your written practice, benchmark technicians objectively on the same jobs, and find coverage gaps before an audit, a turnaround or a customer does.
Practice vs certification
Practical NDT is a skills-practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification, it does not award any level, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens that ASNT SNT-TC-1A and your employer's written practice require. Your employer's Level III remains responsible for training, experience, examinations and certification, and radiographers must still meet Ohio's radiographer training and certification rules.
What Practical NDT does is make the time around those requirements more productive. Trainees reach their practical exams with more repetitions behind them. Technicians returning to a method after months away can warm up without booking a lab. Level IIIs can direct scarce real-specimen time where it is most needed. Atlantis provides formal NDT training and certification programmes separately; Practical NDT is designed to complement that training and your employer's programme, never to replace it.
Bring Practical NDT to your Ohio team
Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, with a scenario library designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who leads Atlantis training. For an Ohio company, a rollout usually starts with a demo, then a pilot matched to your work: Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank for refinery, chemical and gas processing crews, Welding Workshop for fabrication, pipe mill and outage technicians, and Aircraft Hangar and NDT Lab for aerospace suppliers. Your Level III then builds scenario sets and tracks progress across the crew.
Practical NDT is affordable, accessible and fully customizable, and pricing is quote on request. Request a Practical NDT demo for your Ohio team or ask for a quote for a pilot group. You can also email info@atlantisndt.com.
Frequently asked questions
Does Practical NDT replace the practical exam in Ohio?
No. It is practice only. SNT-TC-1A certification still requires a practical examination on real specimens under your employer's written practice, and radiographers must meet Ohio Department of Health requirements. Practical NDT helps you prepare but does not substitute for either.
Which environment suits Cincinnati and Dayton aerospace work?
The Aircraft Hangar environment, with 54 airframe and component jobs, is the best fit, supported by the NDT Lab for penetrant, magnetic particle and calibration practice.
Can Toledo, Lima and Canton refinery crews use it before a turnaround?
Yes. The Oil & Gas Site covers IRIS, PMI, UT thickness and LRUT practice in a process plant, and the Storage Tank environment covers shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening.
Is it useful for pipe and tube mill inspectors in the Mahoning Valley?
It helps them rehearse ultrasonic, eddy current and magnetic particle technique and weld inspection. It does not replace mill-specific procedures or customer specifications, but it builds the skills behind them.
Can our Level III benchmark crews across several sites?
Yes. Level IIIs can build and assign scenario sets and compare technicians on the same jobs. Ask for a demo to see how it works.
Does it need special equipment?
No. Practical NDT runs in a browser or app on everyday devices, so technicians can practise at the plant, the office or home.
