NDT Simulator and Practical Training in Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland was built on steel, water and engines, and all three still generate inspection work. An integrated steel mill runs along the Cuyahoga River in the Flats, fed by ore carried across the Great Lakes. The Port of Cleveland, at the river’s mouth on Lake Erie, handles bulk cargo and containers for one of the busiest ports on the Great Lakes. NASA’s Glenn Research Center, next to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, has worked on aircraft and spacecraft propulsion since 1941, and Northeast Ohio remains home to aerospace forging, casting and machining, welding equipment manufacturing, and a large network of fabrication shops. Add the Perry nuclear plant along the lakeshore in Lake County, and the region has one of the most varied inspection markets in the Midwest. Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Practical NDT puts that practice in reach of Cleveland’s inspectors. It is an immersive, 3D, game-like platform that runs in a browser or the app. Trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs practise real inspection jobs on realistic virtual welds, bench specimens, pipe, tanks, tubes and airframe structures, and get a scored result after every job.

Why Hands-On NDT Practice Matters in Cleveland’s Steel, Port and Aerospace Sectors

The assets that matter in Cleveland are old, heavy and hard-working. A steel mill runs blast furnace, steelmaking and rolling equipment through relentless thermal and mechanical cycles, and its cranes, ladles, rolls, structural steel, piping and pressure equipment all need periodic inspection. Maintenance windows are short and expensive, so inspectors are expected to find what matters quickly and get it right the first time. At the port, cranes, dock structures and the lake freighters that call there bring their own welds and corrosion to assess, and Lake Erie winters shorten the working season. Aerospace work moves in the other direction entirely: tight tolerances, fine surface indications on forgings and castings, and strict procedure control.

Very few inspectors get steady exposure to every one of those defect populations. A technician who spends the summer on mill outages might go months without a subtle eddy current indication on an aerospace part. An aerospace penetrant inspector might never see a fatigue crack in a crane girder. Rare defects are the hardest to keep sharp on, and they are exactly the ones that matter. Real flawed specimens are costly, and a mill or a port cannot hand out production equipment for practice. Weather and plant schedules make in-person training hard to fit in. A simulator removes those limits and lets technicians rehearse at any time. It also improves safety: a technician who has already practised the job does less trial and error at height, near hot equipment or on a working dock.

Methods You Can Practice: Ultrasonic Testing Simulator, Phased Array, Eddy Current and More

Practical NDT covers 12 methods. The surface group is penetrant testing (PT), magnetic particle testing (MT) and visual testing (VT). The volumetric group is contact ultrasonic testing (UT), phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT), time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) and radiographic testing (RT). The electromagnetic group is eddy current testing (ET) and magnetic flux leakage (MFL). The specialist group is long-range ultrasonic testing (LRUT) guided-wave screening, internal rotary inspection system (IRIS) ultrasonic testing for heat-exchanger and boiler tubes, and positive material identification (PMI) for alloy verification.

For steel mill maintenance inspection, MT and UT scenarios on fabrication joints rehearse fatigue-crack detection in welded structures such as crane runways and support steel, while IRIS scenarios fit boiler and heat-exchanger tubes and PMI scenarios reinforce alloy verification on replacement parts. PAUT and TOFD scenarios cover weld inspection and flaw sizing on pressure equipment and heavy sections. For the port and bulk terminals, UT thickness and MFL floor screening in the Storage Tank environment fit tank and hull-adjacent corrosion work, and LRUT screening rehearses how long pipe runs are prioritised for follow-up. For aerospace manufacturing and maintenance, ET, PT and VT scenarios on airframe and component geometries build the fine surface-inspection habits that forgings, castings and machined parts demand. RT scenarios let inspectors practise weld and casting image interpretation with no radiation exposure.

Five Virtual Workplaces Mapped to Northeast Ohio

The Welding Workshop, with 52 jobs on weld coupons and fabrication joints, fits the region’s fabrication shops, structural steel work and the welding-heavy manufacturing culture of Northeast Ohio. The NDT Lab, also with 52 jobs on bench specimens and reference blocks, supports calibration discipline for aerospace and precision manufacturing inspectors. The Aircraft Hangar, with 54 jobs on airframe and component inspection, fits aerospace component makers and aviation maintenance technicians around Hopkins and Burke Lakefront. The Oil & Gas Site, with 73 jobs on weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant, is the best match for mill utilities, chemical plants, power generation and pipeline work in the region. The Storage Tank environment, with UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank, suits fuel and bulk liquid terminals along the lakefront and river. Thirty-three guided lessons introduce each method before users are scored.

Built for Every Skill Level

A new trainee in Cleveland might come from a welding programme, a mill maintenance crew, a machining background or a career change. Guided fundamentals explain each method, walk through setup and calibration logic, and show correct and incorrect results before any score counts. Trainees can repeat scenarios freely, with no parts consumed and no supervisor time needed for every repetition.

A working technician uses the platform for rare-defect refreshers between assignments and to prepare for a change of work. A mill inspector preparing for a contract at an aerospace supplier can rehearse ET and PT on fine surface indications. An aerospace inspector picking up field work can practise MT and UT on heavy weldments. After a long stretch on one kind of job, a few evenings of practice restore fluency before the next one.

A Level III or team lead can build and assign scenario sets matched to an upcoming outage or production programme, benchmark inspectors objectively on identical jobs, and find coverage gaps before the work starts. For a contractor assembling a crew for a mill outage, or a manufacturer preparing for a customer audit, that objective baseline is valuable. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who also leads Atlantis training.

How It Complements Formal ASNT Training and the Practical Exam

Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification and it does not replace the in-person practical examination on real specimens required by your employer’s written practice under ASNT SNT-TC-1A. Under that recommended practice, the employer documents the training hours, experience hours and written, specific and practical examinations for each method and level, and the employer certifies the technician. Aerospace manufacturers and their customers often apply their own additional qualification requirements as well, and those stand on their own. A simulator score counts toward none of it.

What it does is make formal preparation more effective. Technicians who have rehearsed scanning, calibration and evaluation many times go into the practical exam confident and familiar with the logic. Employers can see who is ready before booking scarce exam time on real specimens. Atlantis provides formal NDT training for Level I, II and III and consulting on written practices, and Practical NDT sits alongside that training as a complement. It is fitting context that the American Society for Nondestructive Testing itself is headquartered in Columbus, Ohio; the SNT-TC-1A framework that Ohio employers work under is published by ASNT.

Radiography in Ohio has its own rules. Ohio has been an NRC Agreement State since 1999, and the Ohio Department of Health licenses radioactive materials, registers x-ray equipment and sets radiographer training and certification requirements, including that industrial radiographers be certified through an approved independent programme. Virtual RT practice in Practical NDT uses no radiation and has no bearing on those requirements; it is purely a technique and interpretation rehearsal.

Cleveland’s Industrial Geography: Steel, the Lake, Aerospace and Power

The steel mill in Cleveland’s Flats, known for years as LTV Steel and today operating as the Cleveland Works integrated steelmaking facility, sits on the Cuyahoga River with direct access to Great Lakes shipping, rail and highways. Integrated steelmaking involves blast furnaces, basic oxygen steelmaking and rolling operations, and each area brings its own inspection demands: refractory-lined vessels, cranes and runways, hydraulic systems, rolls, piping, boilers and structural steel. Outages concentrate a great deal of inspection work into short windows, and contractors bring in technicians from across the region to meet them.

The Port of Cleveland, managed by the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority, is one of the largest ports on the Great Lakes by tonnage. Lake freighters carry iron ore, limestone and other bulk cargo along the river to the mill and other customers, and the port also handles container and general cargo. Marine structures, cranes and the vessels themselves all need weld and corrosion inspection. Lake Erie ice brings a winter layup season when much vessel maintenance happens.

Aerospace is the region’s other deep specialty. NASA Glenn Research Center, established as an NACA laboratory in 1941, sits between Hopkins airport and the Rocky River Reservation and continues to do propulsion, power and materials research. Northeast Ohio is home to aerospace forging and casting operations, precision machining and component suppliers, all of which rely on PT, ET, UT and RT to meet customer specifications. The region is also known for welding: one of the world’s best-known welding equipment manufacturers is based in the Cleveland suburbs, and welding skills run deep in the local workforce.

Power generation rounds out the picture. The Perry nuclear plant sits on the Lake Erie shore in Lake County east of Cleveland, and outage seasons bring inspection work to the area. Across all of these sectors, the common thread is that Cleveland inspectors must be versatile. A shared practice platform lets them stay versatile without waiting for the next job to remind them of a method they have not used in months.

Hands-On NDT Training in Cleveland: Typical Use Patterns

Mill outage contractors assign MT, UT and IRIS scenarios in the weeks before a shutdown. Aerospace suppliers use the NDT Lab and Aircraft Hangar to onboard new inspectors and keep ET and PT technique consistent across shifts. Port and terminal inspection teams practise UT thickness and MFL screening in the Storage Tank environment. Fabrication shops use the Welding Workshop to turn experienced welders into capable inspectors. Training coordinators use the guided lessons before formal classroom courses. In every case, real parts, real assets and the real exam remain the standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam?

No. It is a practice and readiness tool. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A, your employer certifies you according to its written practice, which includes a practical examination on real specimens. Practical NDT helps you prepare and stay sharp, but it does not certify anyone.

What experience level is it for?

Every level. Trainees start with 33 guided lessons, working technicians use rare-defect refreshers between assignments, and Level IIIs and team leads build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews and find coverage gaps.

Is it useful for steel mill outage preparation?

Yes. MT and UT scenarios on welded structures, IRIS scenarios on boiler and exchanger tubes, and PMI scenarios for replacement parts match typical mill maintenance inspection. Ask about outage preparation sets.

Does it support aerospace inspection practice?

The Aircraft Hangar environment has 54 jobs on airframe and component inspection with ET, PT and VT, and the NDT Lab supports calibration discipline on reference blocks. It is general practice, not a substitute for any customer-specific qualification. Request an aerospace-focused demo.

Does virtual radiography count toward Ohio radiographer requirements?

No. The Ohio Department of Health sets the licensing and radiographer certification requirements for real radiography in Ohio. Practical NDT’s RT scenarios involve no radiation and are only for technique and interpretation practice.
