NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in North Dakota

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience. In North Dakota, where a technician can drive three hours between jobs and lose weeks of outdoor work to winter, a portal you can open anywhere is especially useful. Practical NDT is an immersive, 3D, game-like platform that runs in a browser or app. You step into a virtual workplace, pick up your equipment and work a real inspection job on a realistic asset: a pipeline weld, a tank shell, a heat-exchanger bundle, a steel structure, an airframe panel. Each job is scored as soon as you finish, and the feedback shows what you found, what you missed and why. It serves every level, from a new hire to a Level III who needs an objective way to compare a crew.

North Dakota's inspection economy is built on energy. The Bakken and Three Forks formations of the Williston Basin make the state one of the largest oil producers in the country. That output supports a dense network of well pads, tank batteries, gathering lines, gas processing plants, rail terminals and long-haul pipelines. Beyond oil, the state has a crude refinery at Mandan, a renewable diesel plant at Dickinson, a coal gasification plant near Beulah, lignite-fired power stations along the Missouri River, two Air Force bases, and an agricultural equipment manufacturing base in the Red River Valley. Crews here are small, spread out and usually expected to cover many methods. Practical NDT helps keep all of those skills ready. To see it on your own work, request a North Dakota demo.

North Dakota's NDT workforce and where the work is

The Bakken, in the northwest. Williams, McKenzie, Mountrail and Dunn counties sit at the centre of Bakken production, with Williston, Watford City and Tioga as the service hubs. Inspection work here follows the oilfield lifecycle. New gathering lines and station piping need weld inspection during construction. Tank batteries and produced-water systems need thickness surveys and corrosion checks. Gas processing plants, which have expanded to capture more associated gas and reduce flaring, need weld, vessel and piping inspection. Crude and gas pipelines leaving the basin need integrity assessments. Much of this work is done by small, mobile crews who handle several methods and move between pads, plants and pipeline spreads.

The Missouri River energy corridor. Running from Bismarck-Mandan north through Mercer and McLean counties, this corridor holds much of the state's non-oilfield energy infrastructure. The Mandan refinery processes Bakken crude. Near Beulah, the Great Plains Synfuels Plant gasifies lignite to make synthetic natural gas and other products. Several large lignite-fired power stations generate a major share of the region's electricity, and Garrison Dam provides hydroelectric power. Power stations and the gasification plant need boiler tube inspection, header and piping weld inspection, pressure vessel work and outage support. The refinery needs the full turnaround toolkit. To the southwest, Dickinson's renewable diesel plant, a converted crude refinery, adds another process facility.

The Red River Valley and the bases. In the east, Fargo and Grand Forks are the manufacturing and services centres. Agricultural equipment and components, steel fabrication, food processing and aviation support drive local NDT demand, with a focus on weld inspection and manufacturing QA. Minot Air Force Base in the north-central region and Grand Forks Air Force Base in the east bring military aviation and maintenance work.

The climate factor. North Dakota winters are hard on both assets and inspection schedules. Deep cold affects how steel behaves, how couplants and consumables perform and how long a technician can safely work outdoors. Outdoor inspection seasons are compressed, which makes each field day more valuable and leaves technicians with long indoor stretches where practice is the only way to stay sharp.

Practical NDT by city in North Dakota

Each North Dakota city below has its own Practical NDT page with local detail. This table maps local work to Practical NDT environments and methods.

Bismarck. Bismarck-Mandan is the hub of North Dakota's non-oilfield energy economy. It has the state's largest crude refinery, and the lignite power stations and the synthetic fuels plant are an hour north along the Missouri. Inspection work includes refinery turnarounds, boiler tube inspection during power plant outages, pressure vessel work and pipeline support. The Oil & Gas Site covers IRIS on exchanger and boiler tubes, PMI and corrosion mapping, and the Storage Tank environment fits tank farms at the refinery and terminals. Bismarck is also home to the state agencies that oversee radiation safety and boilers.

Williston. Williston is the working capital of the Bakken. Inspection crews based here cover a large area of well pads, tank batteries, compressor stations, gas plants, gathering lines and rail terminals. The work favours versatility: UT thickness on produced-water and crude lines, radiography and phased array on new pipeline and station welds, guided-wave screening on long runs, and tank inspection. Oil & Gas Site jobs, Storage Tank surveys and Welding Workshop coupons together cover almost everything a Bakken technician does in a year.

Fargo. Fargo is North Dakota's manufacturing and aviation centre. It builds agricultural equipment and components, fabricates structural and machinery steel, and supports military and civil aviation. Inspection here is closer to production QA: visual and magnetic particle inspection on structural and machinery welds, ultrasonic inspection of critical welds and castings, and eddy current on aviation parts. The Welding Workshop and NDT Lab are the core environments, with the Aircraft Hangar for aviation work.

Environments and methods that match North Dakota work

Practical NDT has five workplace environments, twelve methods and 33 guided lessons. Here is how they map to North Dakota's industries.

Oil & Gas Site (73 jobs). This process-plant environment is where most North Dakota technicians will spend their time. Bakken crews can practise contact UT thickness surveys on production and gathering piping and LRUT guided-wave screening on long runs and road crossings. They can also practise RT, PAUT and TOFD on new pipeline and station welds. Refinery, gas plant and power plant crews can practise IRIS on heat-exchanger and boiler tubes, PMI on alloy components and replacement spools, and corrosion mapping on vessels and headers.

Storage Tank. Run UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank. The Bakken has thousands of production tanks and many larger terminal and refinery tanks, so tank inspection skills are in steady demand. Practise grid layout, coverage and deciding which indications need follow-up.

Welding Workshop (52 jobs). Weld coupons and fabrication joints for RT, PAUT, TOFD, UT, MT, PT and VT. This matches pipeline construction across the basin, station and plant fabrication, and the steel fabrication and agricultural equipment manufacturing in Fargo and elsewhere. Practise finding lack of fusion, incomplete penetration, porosity, slag and cracking. These defects matter even more in cold-climate service, where steel toughness is critical.

Aircraft Hangar (54 jobs). Airframe and component inspection with eddy current, UT and PT. This fits aviation maintenance and support work around Fargo, Grand Forks and Minot.

NDT Lab (52 jobs). Bench specimens and reference blocks for calibration, DAC and TCG, probe selection and sizing. For a state where many technicians are new to inspection, often coming from the oilfield, welding or the military, this is where solid fundamentals get built.

Regulators and requirements North Dakota technicians meet

Radiography. North Dakota has been an NRC Agreement State since 1969. The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality's Radiation Control Program in Bismarck licenses radioactive materials, handles reciprocity for out-of-state radiography companies and certifies industrial radiographers through a state exam. With so much pipeline weld radiography in the Bakken, this program is especially relevant. Practical NDT's RT scenarios cover exposure set-up and image interpretation only. They do not count toward radiation safety training, supervised hours or the state exam, and they involve no real sources.

Boilers and pressure vessels. The Boiler Inspection Program, part of the North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality, carries out initial and periodic inspections of boilers under the North Dakota Boiler Rules. Pressure equipment is built and repaired to the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code and the National Board Inspection Code. Refineries and gas plants generally run inspection programmes on API 510 for vessels, API 570 for piping and API 653 for tanks, with methods carried out to ASME Section V.

Oil and gas, and pipelines. The North Dakota Industrial Commission's Oil and Gas Division regulates wells and oilfield facilities. Pipeline safety falls under federal PHMSA rules in 49 CFR Parts 192 and 195, with the North Dakota Public Service Commission involved in pipeline siting and intrastate gas pipeline safety. Pipeline weld acceptance commonly follows API 1104. Structural steel follows AWS D1.1.

Personnel certification. Most North Dakota service companies and operators certify technicians through an employer written practice based on ASNT SNT-TC-1A, the framework Atlantis training supports. Aviation employers may work to NAS 410, and some clients ask for ASNT central certification. These are market context, meaning requirements particular employers may set. Practical NDT is practice for any scheme and certifies no one.

For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in North Dakota

New trainees. A lot of North Dakota's inspection workforce comes from other oilfield, construction, welding and military jobs. Trainees often start with limited classroom time and learn fast on the job, sometimes far from an experienced mentor. The guided fundamentals path gives them a structured start. It explains how each method works, how to calibrate and how to scan, then moves to scored jobs with realistic defects. That gives them many repetitions before they touch a real weld and helps prepare them for the classroom and experience hours certification requires.

Working technicians. Bakken work is cyclical. Activity rises and falls with oil prices, and winter slows outdoor work. A technician might spend summer shooting pipeline welds and winter on indoor plant jobs or waiting for the next project. Skills you do not use fade, and Practical NDT lets you keep them current: PAUT or TOFD before a pipeline job, IRIS before a power plant or refinery outage, tank surveys before a terminal job. Because it works on a laptop, you can practise in a man camp, a motel or at home.

Level IIIs and team leads. A Level III overseeing technicians spread from Williston to Fargo rarely sees them work side by side. Practical NDT gives you an objective, repeatable way to benchmark people. You can build scenario sets that match your procedures, assign them, see who misses which defect types or leaves coverage gaps, and target refresher work before the next busy season. It supports your written practice and practical exams. It does not replace them.

Practice vs certification

Practical NDT is a skills-practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification and not a substitute for the practical examination. Under ASNT SNT-TC-1A and the employer written practice built on it, a technician needs documented classroom training, documented on-the-job experience and a practical exam on real specimens with real equipment, administered under the employer's Level III. None of that can come from a simulator. Practical NDT does not award hours, issue certificates or count toward the North Dakota industrial radiographer certification or any other credential.

Its value is readiness. People who have worked through many scored scenarios arrive at the practical exam knowing what real indications look like and how to set up and cover a part properly. Technicians who refresh before a job start faster and make fewer mistakes on the client's time. Supervisors get a clearer picture of their crew. For formal training toward SNT-TC-1A certification, see Atlantis NDT training and certification. Use Practical NDT alongside formal training, never instead of it.

Bring Practical NDT to your North Dakota team

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who also leads Atlantis training. A North Dakota demo starts with your work. For Bakken service crews, that means the Oil & Gas Site and Storage Tank. For pipeline contractors, it is the Welding Workshop and Oil & Gas Site. For refinery, gas plant and power plant inspection, the focus is IRIS, PMI and corrosion mapping. For Fargo fabricators and aviation shops, it is the Welding Workshop, NDT Lab and Aircraft Hangar. Then we plan rollout: trainee logins, refresher sets timed for spring start-up and outage season, and benchmarking tools for your Level III.

No lab booking and no travel are needed. Practical NDT runs in a browser or app wherever your crews are. Pricing is quote on request and tailored to your team. Book a Practical NDT demo for your North Dakota team or email info@atlantisndt.com. Individual technicians are welcome too. Tell us which methods you want to practise. Frequently asked questions

Is there online NDT training I can use in North Dakota without travelling to a lab?

For practice, yes. Practical NDT runs in a browser or app, so you can work 3D inspection scenarios from Williston, Bismarck, Fargo or a man camp in the Bakken. Formal certification training and practical exams still take place in person under your employer's written practice.

Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam?

No. SNT-TC-1A requires a practical exam on real specimens plus documented training and experience hours. Practical NDT is practice and readiness. It certifies no one and awards no hours.

Can I practise pipeline weld inspection for Bakken work?

Yes. The Welding Workshop and Oil & Gas Site include RT image interpretation, PAUT and TOFD on welds, plus UT thickness and LRUT screening on piping. Your employer's procedures and the applicable code still govern the real work.

Does RT practice count toward North Dakota radiographer certification?

No. The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality's radiographer certification requires radiation safety training, supervised experience with real sources and the state exam. Practical NDT only covers set-up and interpretation practice, with no radiation involved.

Is it useful for power plant and refinery outages near Bismarck?

Yes, as preparation. The Oil & Gas Site includes IRIS on boiler and exchanger tubes, PMI, corrosion mapping and weld inspection, and the Storage Tank environment covers shell UT and MFL floor screening.
