NDT Simulator and Hands-On Practice for Norfolk and Hampton Roads

On the south side of Hampton Roads, most inspection work is about keeping things that already exist in service. Warships come home to Naval Station Norfolk and go into maintenance availabilities at private yards along the Elizabeth River or at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth. Coal trains unload at Lambert’s Point, container cranes work the Port of Virginia terminals, fuel moves through bulk storage, and the rebuilt Portsmouth Marine Terminal stages monopiles and turbines for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project off Virginia Beach. Every one of those activities creates weld inspection, thickness surveys, corrosion assessment and repair verification. Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, called Practical NDT. It is an immersive, 3D, game-like environment where a trainee or an experienced inspector can scan virtual welds, plates, pipes and tanks in a browser or app and receive instant scored feedback. This page explains how it supports a Hampton Roads workforce that lives on repair, maintenance and the waterfront.

Why Hands-On NDT Practice Matters in a Ship Repair Economy

Repair work is unpredictable in a way new construction is not. A new-build weld has a known design, a known procedure and a known inspection plan. A repair on a ship that has been in service for decades might involve wasted plate, cracked brackets, previous weld repairs of unknown quality, coatings that hide corrosion and access that forces the inspector into an awkward position. Inspectors in Norfolk and Portsmouth often move from one availability to the next, and one month they are doing magnetic particle testing on structural repairs while the next they are doing ultrasonic thickness readings on tanks and piping. Techniques they are qualified for but not using regularly fade, and the unusual indications that matter most, such as a crack growing from an old repair or a lamination next to a new insert, are exactly the ones they see least often.

Practising on real hardware is rarely possible. Nobody wants a trainee experimenting on a ship’s structure during a tightly scheduled availability, and flawed specimens that realistically represent marine repairs are expensive and scarce. Security at naval facilities and the pace of commercial repair work also limit how much training can happen on site. Radiography, still widely used for certain weld inspections, requires licensed sources, controlled areas and radiation safety procedures that make practice exposures impractical. Practical NDT lets people practise the thinking and the hand skills away from the waterfront. They can run the same kind of weld scan repeatedly, get it wrong, see the flaw they missed, and return to the job site with more confidence and better habits.

Methods You Can Practice: Phased Array Simulator, Ultrasonic Testing Simulator and Corrosion Screening

The platform supports 12 methods. Surface methods are penetrant testing (PT), magnetic particle testing (MT) and visual testing (VT). Volumetric methods are contact ultrasonic testing (UT), phased array ultrasonic testing (PAUT), time of flight diffraction (TOFD) and radiographic testing (RT). Electromagnetic methods are eddy current testing (ET) and magnetic flux leakage (MFL). The three specialised techniques are long range ultrasonic testing (LRUT) guided-wave screening, internal rotary inspection system (IRIS) ultrasonic testing of heat-exchanger and boiler tubes, and positive material identification (PMI) for alloy verification. Each scenario asks the user to make the calls a real technician makes: probe and technique selection, calibration, scan coverage, indication recognition, sizing and reporting.

For Hampton Roads the core set is weld-focused and corrosion-focused. The phased array simulator and TOFD scenarios on weld coupons and fabrication joints teach scan planning and sizing on butt and fillet geometries of the kind found in hull, deck and foundation structures. The ultrasonic testing simulator covers both flaw detection and thickness measurement, so a technician can practise taking reliable readings on corroded plate and interpreting what a sudden drop means. MT and VT scenarios drill the surface inspection that dominates structural repair verification. MFL floor screening and UT shell thickness surveys on a full-size tank are relevant to the fuel and bulk liquid storage that serves the port and the fleet, and LRUT guided-wave screening helps people understand how long runs of pipe are screened before local follow-up with UT. RT scenarios let a trainee practise exposure logic and image interpretation with no source present.

Five Environments and Where Hampton Roads Teams Start

Practical NDT is structured as five virtual workplaces with 33 guided lessons across them. The NDT Lab holds bench specimens and reference blocks and offers 52 jobs, ideal for fundamentals and calibration practice. The Welding Workshop, also with 52 jobs, is built on weld coupons and fabrication joints and is where most ship repair, structural and offshore wind related weld practice happens. The Aircraft Hangar offers 54 jobs on airframe and component inspection, relevant to the naval aviation presence in the region. The Oil & Gas Site has 73 jobs covering weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant setting, which translates well to piping systems and machinery spaces. The Storage Tank environment covers UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank. Norfolk and Portsmouth teams usually start with the Welding Workshop and the Storage Tank, then add the Oil & Gas Site for piping and corrosion work.

Built for Every Skill Level

New trainees in Hampton Roads often come from a welding, shipfitting or military maintenance background and already understand how structures are built. What they need is method fundamentals: how the instrument works, how to calibrate, how to scan systematically and what a genuine indication looks like compared with geometry or surface noise. The guided lessons and the NDT Lab give them that step by step, with scoring that shows whether they covered the area, set up correctly and found and characterised the defect.

Working technicians use the platform between availabilities to keep less-used methods sharp and to rehearse rare defects: a toe crack under paint, lack of sidewall fusion in a thick section, a lamination beside a new insert plate or isolated deep pitting that a coarse thickness grid would miss. Level IIIs and team leads can build and assign scenario sets, benchmark results objectively across a crew and spot coverage gaps before a new contract starts. In a region where a contractor may need to ramp up quickly for a large availability, knowing which people are sharp on which methods is valuable information, and Practical NDT provides it without taking anyone off a job for a lab day.

How Practical NDT Complements Formal ASNT Training and the Practical Exam

Practical NDT is a skills-practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens required under ASNT SNT-TC-1A and the employer’s written practice. SNT-TC-1A leaves the details to the employer’s written practice, which defines required training, experience, and general, specific and practical examinations, and the practical exam is performed on real specimens using real equipment. Nothing in a simulator changes that requirement, and Atlantis does not present it as a shortcut.

What the simulator does is make practical exam preparation and real inspections more productive. It is designed to sit next to the Atlantis NDT training program for Level I, II and III. The scenario library was designed by Anoop Rayavarapu, ASNT NDT Level III and founder of Atlantis NDT, who also leads Atlantis training, so the simulator follows the same sequence the bench and classroom teach: setup, coverage, detection, characterisation and reporting. Naval work often carries additional inspection and qualification requirements defined by naval technical publications and contract specifications, and some offshore wind and marine employers ask for other schemes as well. That is market context about what local employers may also require. Atlantis frames its own training around ASNT SNT-TC-1A, and the simulator is practice, not a route to any of those qualifications.

The Hampton Roads Inspection Landscape: Fleet, Port, Coal and Offshore Wind

The US Navy defines much of the local economy. Naval Station Norfolk is the home port of a large part of the Atlantic Fleet, and Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, established in 1767, maintains and modernises nuclear-powered carriers and submarines. Several private ship repair yards along the Elizabeth River carry out surface ship availabilities, and the Navy’s regional maintenance organisation coordinates much of that work. The Defense Fuel Support Point at Craney Island in Portsmouth stores fuel for the fleet. All of this generates weld inspection, thickness gauging, magnetic particle and penetrant testing, and radiography on repair welds. These organisations are mentioned only as the industry context of the region, not as Atlantis customers or partners.

The commercial waterfront adds more. The Port of Virginia’s terminals in Norfolk and Portsmouth handle containers and breakbulk cargo, and Lambert’s Point in Norfolk is one of the largest coal export facilities on the East Coast, with conveyors, piers and heavy structural steel that need regular inspection. The newest layer is offshore wind. The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project is building 176 turbines about 27 miles off Virginia Beach, and the Portsmouth Marine Terminal was rebuilt as a heavy-lift staging port for its monopiles and turbine components. After a federal stop-work order in December 2025, a federal judge allowed construction to resume in January 2026, and completion is targeted for the end of 2026. Large thick-section welded structures of that kind bring demand for ultrasonic and phased array expertise. Industrial radiography anywhere in Virginia is licensed through the Virginia Department of Health Radioactive Materials Program, part of the Office of Radiological Health, and RT trainees will work under that framework once they are in the field.

NDT Training Online in Virginia for a Rotating Workforce

Hampton Roads has a large pool of people with military and trades experience, and many of them are working toward NDT roles or already hold Level I or II. They also have irregular schedules, deployments, shift work and availabilities that start and end on short notice. Virtual NDT training suits that pattern. A technician can complete a PAUT refresher between shifts, a trainee can work through a guided lesson in the evening in Chesapeake or Virginia Beach, and a Level III can check progress from the office. It does not replace real equipment time, but it ensures that when people do get time on a real instrument and a real specimen, they spend it confirming skills rather than learning them from scratch.

Bringing Practical NDT to Your Hampton Roads Team

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and bringing it to a Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake or Virginia Beach team takes very little setup. We start with an online demo matched to your work: the Welding Workshop with PAUT, TOFD, UT and MT for ship repair and structural steel; the Storage Tank for MFL and thickness surveys; the Oil & Gas Site for piping, corrosion and LRUT screening; or the Aircraft Hangar if you support aviation. We then agree access for trainees, technicians and leads, the first scenario sets to assign and how progress will be reviewed. It runs in a browser or app, so there is nothing to install on secure networks beyond normal web access. Pricing is a quote on request, and the platform is affordable, accessible and fully customizable. Frequently Asked Questions

Does Practical NDT replace the practical certification exam?

No. It is a practice and readiness tool. Certification under ASNT SNT-TC-1A depends on the employer’s written practice, with documented training, experience and general, specific and practical examinations, and the practical exam is done on real specimens with real equipment. The simulator does not certify anyone, and it does not replace naval or contract-specific qualification requirements either.

What experience level is it for?

All levels. New trainees start in the NDT Lab and the 33 guided lessons. Working technicians use rare-defect refreshers between availabilities. Level IIIs and team leads build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews objectively and find coverage gaps before a job starts.

Is it relevant to ship repair and offshore wind work?

Yes, as practice. The Welding Workshop’s 52 jobs on weld coupons and fabrication joints suit PAUT, TOFD, UT, MT and VT practice, and the Storage Tank and Oil & Gas Site environments add thickness, MFL and corrosion scenarios. They are generic training environments and do not replace any specific procedure or qualification required on a ship or offshore project.

Can it be used by people who are still on active duty or in the trades?

Yes. Because it runs in a browser or app, people can practise on their own schedule. Many people in Hampton Roads move into NDT from welding, shipfitting or military maintenance, and the guided fundamentals are built for that kind of transition.

How do we arrange a demo?

Use the Practical NDT demo request form and tell us whether your focus is ship repair, port and terminal work, offshore wind, storage or aviation. Demos are online and work for a single inspector or a large crew.
