NDT Simulator & Practical NDT Training in Manitoba

Atlantis built the first-ever online practical NDT simulation portal for practice and hands-on experience, and Manitoba's industrial mix makes it an unusually good fit. The Atlantis Practical NDT simulator is an immersive, 3D, game-like platform that runs in a browser or app. Technicians enter a virtual aircraft hangar, NDT lab, welding workshop, oil and gas site or full-size storage tank, choose a job, set up the technique and get scored feedback the moment the job is done. Manitoba is not a one-industry province. Winnipeg is one of Canada's largest aerospace centres, with gas-turbine engine overhaul, aerostructures manufacturing and a major air force wing. The province builds buses, coaches and agricultural equipment. Manitoba Hydro operates a chain of large hydroelectric stations on the Nelson River in the north and a high-voltage transmission system to bring that power south. Nickel and base-metal mining shape the northern economy around Thompson, Flin Flon and Snow Lake, a small oil patch operates in the southwest, and major crude oil and natural gas mainlines cross the south of the province. That variety means a Manitoba technician may need eddy current on a turbine component one month and UT on a penstock weld the next. Practical NDT lets them keep both skills sharp.

This is the Manitoba hub for Practical NDT. It explains where the province's NDT work is, how the simulator's environments and methods line up with it, which regulators Manitoba technicians deal with, and what a simulator can and cannot do. Manitoba's NDT workforce and where the work is

Most of Manitoba's NDT work is concentrated in Winnipeg, but the most demanding inspection environments are often hundreds of kilometres north or west of it. Looking at the province region by region shows why technicians here need such a broad skill set.

Winnipeg aerospace. Winnipeg has one of the largest aerospace clusters in Canada. Gas-turbine engine maintenance, repair and overhaul is a major activity, alongside composite aerostructures manufacturing for commercial aircraft programmes, component repair, and the maintenance support around Winnipeg's international airport. 17 Wing Winnipeg, a Royal Canadian Air Force base, adds military aviation. Aerospace NDT is built around eddy current, fluorescent penetrant, ultrasonic testing of composites and bonded structures, and visual inspection, all done to OEM manuals and tight acceptance criteria. Personnel in this sector are commonly qualified to aerospace standards such as NAS 410 or EN 4179 through an employer programme.

Winnipeg manufacturing and fabrication. Winnipeg is also a major manufacturing city. Transit bus and intercity coach production, agricultural and construction equipment, steel fabrication, rail and trucking equipment, and food processing plants all generate weld inspection work, structural inspection and pressure equipment inspection. Fabrication shops supplying pipelines, hydro projects and mining add MT, UT and RT on structural and pressure welds.

The Nelson River and hydro system. Almost all of Manitoba's electricity comes from hydro, and the largest stations sit on the Nelson River in the north, including Kettle, Long Spruce, Limestone and the newer Keeyask station, with others on the Winnipeg and Saskatchewan rivers. Hydro inspection involves penstocks, scroll cases, turbine runners, wicket gates, spillway gates and hoists, large structural welds and bolting, plus converter stations on the high-voltage DC transmission lines that carry northern power south. UT of thick welds, MT on structural members, PT on turbine components and VT are all routine.

Northern mining. Thompson is the centre of Manitoba's nickel industry, while the Flin Flon and Snow Lake area produces copper, zinc and gold. Mines and mills need inspection of hoists, headframes, crushers, mills, tanks, piping and mobile equipment, frequently in extreme cold and on fly-in or long-drive rotations. Much of this is MT, UT thickness and structural weld inspection.

The southwest oil patch and pipelines. Southwest Manitoba, around Virden and Waskada, has light-oil production with wells, batteries and gathering lines. Major crude oil mainlines and natural gas transmission lines also cross southern Manitoba on their way east, with pump and compressor stations along the routes. That brings in pipeline construction RT and UT, corrosion surveys and tank inspection.

Brandon, Portage la Prairie and the north. Brandon has fertilizer and chemical production and food processing; Portage la Prairie has large food processing plants and military flight training at Southport. In the far north, the Port of Churchill on Hudson Bay and its rail line handle grain and resupply. Each adds its own boilers, pressure vessels, tanks and structural steel to inspect.

Practical NDT by city in Manitoba

Winnipeg has its own Practical NDT page and an ASNT training page. The table maps Winnipeg and Manitoba's other main work centres to the simulator environments and methods that fit them.

Winnipeg. Winnipeg's technicians split broadly into two groups. Aerospace inspectors spend their days on eddy current, fluorescent penetrant and UT of engine and airframe components, where repeatable technique and rare-defect recognition matter more than speed. The Aircraft Hangar environment, with 54 jobs, is the obvious fit. Industrial technicians in fabrication shops and service companies need weld inspection skills, and they use the Welding Workshop and NDT Lab for PAUT sizing, RT interpretation and MT. Winnipeg's training institutions and employers also produce a steady stream of new trainees who benefit from guided fundamentals. See Practical NDT Winnipeg and NDT training in Winnipeg.

The Nelson River corridor. Hydro stations are big, thick-walled, heavily welded structures. Inspection during outages focuses on penstock and scroll-case welds, gate structures, turbine components and lifting equipment. UT of thick sections, PAUT and TOFD for weld sizing, and MT and VT on structural welds are the core methods. Outage windows are short and crews often travel far north, so arriving with skills current matters.

Thompson, Flin Flon and Snow Lake. Mining inspectors work on hoist and headframe structures, crusher and mill components, tanks, slurry piping and mobile fleets. MT and UT thickness are daily tools, and PT and VT support component inspection. Long winters and remote rotations make on-demand practice valuable.

Virden and the southwest. The southwest oil patch and the pipeline corridors bring facility construction, girth welds and tank work. RT and UT on welds, LRUT screening on above-ground runs and MFL on tank floors are the most relevant practice.

Brandon and Portage la Prairie. Chemical and fertilizer plants bring process-plant work: exchangers, alloy piping and pressure vessels, which map to IRIS, PMI and UT in the Oil & Gas Site. Flight training and aviation maintenance link to the Aircraft Hangar.

Environments and methods that match Manitoba work

Practical NDT has five environments, twelve methods and 33 guided lessons. Manitoba is one of the few provinces that uses every environment more or less evenly, because aerospace, manufacturing, hydro, mining and oil all carry real weight here.

Aircraft Hangar (54 jobs). Airframe and component inspection jobs that suit Winnipeg's engine overhaul and aerostructures sectors and the military and civil maintenance around its airports. Eddy current surface and bolt-hole style work, penetrant inspection, UT on components and VT are practised here. For aerospace technicians this is the most directly relevant part of the library.

Welding Workshop (52 jobs). Weld coupons and fabrication joints for RT interpretation, UT and PAUT sizing, TOFD, MT and VT. This fits Winnipeg's fabrication shops, bus and equipment manufacturing, hydro station weld inspection and pipeline construction.

NDT Lab (52 jobs). Bench specimens and reference blocks for calibration, probe handling, sensitivity and fundamentals. Every trainee starts here, and experienced technicians use it to rehearse before a practical examination under any scheme.

Oil & Gas Site (73 jobs). Weld, corrosion, tube and screening practice in a process plant: UT and PAUT corrosion mapping, TOFD, IRIS on exchanger and boiler tubes, LRUT guided-wave screening and PMI alloy verification. It suits the southwest oil patch, pipeline stations and Brandon's chemical plants.

Storage Tank. UT shell thickness surveys and MFL floor screening on a full-size tank, relevant to oil batteries, pipeline terminals, fuel storage and mining process tanks.

Across the twelve methods, Manitoba technicians lean more on ET and PT than most provinces because of aerospace, while hydro and mining put weight on thick-section UT, PAUT and MT. The specialist techniques (LRUT, IRIS, PMI) matter mainly in the oil, pipeline and chemical sectors.

Regulators and requirements Manitoba technicians meet

Short answer: NDT personnel certification is national, radiography sources are federally licensed, aerospace work follows Transport Canada and OEM requirements, and boilers and pressure vessels are regulated by the province. Practical NDT is practice for any of these schemes and replaces none of them.

National NDT certification. Canada's national NDT personnel certification scheme is based on CAN/CGSB-48.9712, the Canadian adoption of ISO 9712, and industrial employers in Manitoba commonly expect technicians to hold certification under it. The Canadian General Standards Board, which published the standard, closed on 1 April 2026; Natural Resources Canada's NDT Certification Body has said it continues to operate and the standard remains valid, but confirm the current certification body and arrangements before planning a route. Aerospace employers usually qualify NDT personnel to NAS 410 or EN 4179 through their own written practice, and some industrial employers serving US clients use ASNT SNT-TC-1A. This is market context only. Atlantis training aligns with ASNT SNT-TC-1A and Atlantis does not train toward, certify or administer CGSB/ISO 9712 or aerospace schemes.

Aviation. Transport Canada regulates aircraft maintenance in Canada, and NDT on aircraft and engine components is performed to the OEM's manuals and the maintenance organization's approved procedures. The Aircraft Hangar environment builds the underlying technique and interpretation skill; it does not replace type-specific procedures or an employer's qualification.

Radiation safety. The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) licenses radioactive sources used in industrial radiography, and only a CNSC-certified exposure device operator, or a trainee under direct supervision, may operate a gamma exposure device. X-ray equipment is subject to provincial requirements. Practical NDT's RT jobs involve no radiation and do not count toward exposure device operator certification.

Pressure equipment. In Manitoba, boilers, pressure vessels and pressure plants are regulated under The Steam and Pressure Plants Act, administered by Inspection and Technical Services within the Office of the Fire Commissioner. Equipment must be inspected after installation and before use, and periodically through its life. Codes commonly used include CSA B51, ASME Section V and VIII, ASME B31.1 and B31.3.

Pipelines and structures. Interprovincial pipelines crossing Manitoba fall under the Canada Energy Regulator, with CSA Z662 the core pipeline standard; provincially regulated oil and gas facilities fall under Manitoba's oil and gas legislation. Structural fabrication commonly references CSA W59 and CSA W47.1, and hydro work often follows the owner's own specifications along with CSA and ASME codes.

For trainees, working technicians and Level IIIs in Manitoba

Practical NDT adapts to three kinds of user. In Manitoba each faces a slightly different problem.

New trainees. Winnipeg's colleges, aerospace employers and fabrication shops bring new people into NDT every year, and the bottleneck is almost always hands-on hours. Specimen cupboards are limited, supervisors are busy, and in aerospace the parts themselves are expensive and controlled. Guided fundamentals in the NDT Lab and Aircraft Hangar let a trainee repeat probe handling, eddy current setup, penetrant process steps and indication interpretation as often as needed, with instant feedback. That makes it useful NDT practical exam preparation, as long as everyone remembers the real exam still happens on real specimens.

Working technicians. Industrial technicians in Manitoba often move between very different jobs: a hydro outage in the north, a pipeline station in the south, a fabrication shop in Winnipeg. Aerospace technicians may see certain defect types only rarely. Rare-defect refreshers between assignments, on things like fatigue cracks at fastener holes, disbonds in composites, lack of fusion in thick welds or corrosion pitting, help them arrive ready.

Level IIIs and team leads. Level IIIs can build and assign scenario sets, benchmark crews objectively and find coverage gaps before a campaign. For a hydro outage or a turnaround that brings in contract technicians, a consistent scenario set gives a like-for-like picture of who is ready for which method. In aerospace, it can help a Level III check whether technicians apply a procedure consistently.

Practice vs certification

Practical NDT is a practice and readiness tool. It is not a certification. It does not grant a level under CAN/CGSB-48.9712, ASNT SNT-TC-1A, NAS 410, EN 4179 or any employer's written practice, and it does not replace the practical examination on real specimens those schemes require. It does not satisfy CNSC exposure device operator requirements or any Transport Canada requirement. What it gives Manitoba technicians is more realistic repetition before exams and between jobs. It complements formal NDT training and supervised experience; the formal practical exam remains the step that counts.

Aerospace and heavy industry under one roof: why Manitoba crews use virtual NDT training

Most provinces have one dominant NDT sector. Manitoba has several, and they rarely share specimens or labs. An aerospace shop's eddy current standards are no help to a hydro outage crew, and a fabrication shop's weld coupons are no help to an engine inspector. Employers that serve more than one sector, and technicians who move between them, end up with gaps that are expensive to fill with physical specimens.

A browser-based NDT simulator with an Aircraft Hangar, a Welding Workshop, an Oil & Gas Site, a Storage Tank and an NDT Lab covers those sectors in one place. A Winnipeg inspection company can use the hangar jobs for its aerospace staff and the weld and plant jobs for its industrial staff, and track both through the same scoring. Northern crews can practise during rotations, subject to site connectivity. And because winter limits outdoor practice for a large part of the year, being able to rehearse an ultrasonic testing setup or a phased array scan indoors on a laptop is a real advantage.

None of this replaces time on real equipment or real parts. It makes that time more productive by moving the basic repetitions, and the first encounter with a rare defect, somewhere safe and cheap.
